Cancer centre set By MONIQUE KUZEFF CLOSE to three years in the making, the $70 million, three-level Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) is set to open by mid-year. The new integrated cancer centre, which will be co-ordinated and managed by Albury Wodonga Health, comprises three levels with two internal courtyards, three radiotherapy bunkers and linear accelerators, consulting rooms, a wellness centre, three wings of 10 rooms and a link bridge to the Albury Base Hospital. The radiotherapy and the wellness centre are located on the ground floor, with 30-day chemotherapy chairs and consulting spaces on level one, and 30 inpatient beds on level two. AWRCC is set to become the central site and provide both public and private inpatient, day chemotherapy and various other health services from the one location. Patients will be able to receive radiotherapy, chemotherapy, new immune therapies and clinical trials locally, excluding highly specialised surgery. Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Operations Director Robyn Gillis said the building was progressing well and the progress to date is targeting the scheduled opening. “The facility is due to be opened in the middle of the year and it’ll be staged opening to various providers and services such as hospital services, day chemotherapy, research facility and pharmacy services to name a few, Ms Gillis said. “The day chemotherapy area will have 28 chairs where chemotherapy services will be delivered. Ms Gillis said the building is of a magnificent modern design and a great complex for quality care. “The patients’ experience will be so much better due to the sheer size, light and aesthetics.
“The hospital has 30 individual rooms, each beautifully kitted out so patients can enjoy a beautiful view of the internal gardens. The AWRCC has a 130 car park capacity that have been added to the existing car park, plus an ambulance bay disabled parking, and short-term parking for oncology and day chemotherapy patients. Ms Gillis said it was important for the community to have the opportunity to see how the building is currently progressing. “The idea of the building came to fruition three years ago and they’ve been constructing ever since October 2013. “Construction has gone very well and we have about 50 to 80 people working on-site everyday, so lots of local contractors who are working to make a great centre. “It’ll be great to have all those different services in the one centre as it makes for a better out come journey and outcome for those patients.
