Bursting at seams By TANIA PHILLIPS THE campaign has begun to upgrade the Wodonga Men’s Shed facilities. Federal Member of INDI Cathy McGowan officially launched the Wodonga Men’s Shed Fund-raising Campaign on Friday. The group is seeking financial support to relocate from their current premises in Emerald Avenue, Wodonga. Men’s Shed chairman Alton Butt said that it was support from people of Cathy’s calibre that helped create awareness and promoted such events within the community. “It’s great that Cathy could come along and support us in launching our fund-raising campaign. Increasing the promotion and the awareness of our campaign is paramount to us reaching our fund-raising goals, he said. Mr Butt said the Wodonga Men’s Shed was looking to raise $230,000 through donations, grants and internal fund raising activities to build a new purposebuilt shed facility after outgrowing their current location. “Our current premises can no longer support our membership base of 60 which continues to grow; the boys are working outdoors without sufficient shelter and in some cases, in unsafe working conditions, he said. The new facility is due to be built when sufficient funding has been raised. The Wodonga Shed is finalising negotiations with the Wodonga Council for a suitable parcel of land. “The community needs to continue to support community services such as the Men’s Shed, Mr Butt said. “We have helped many members over the years that have lost loved ones, lost jobs or have been staring depression in the face. This is a fantastic environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects and talk openly about personal and private issues. The first stage of the project is expected to require $150K and to start the project, WMS has established a dedicated “Wodonga Men’s Shed Building Fund. The WMS is hoping to raise $80K through donations, corporate contributions, regular funding, workshop activities and grants by the end of the year. Guest speaker at Friday’s launch was the group’s patron Lou Lieberman. Art boasts big prizes - see your MAMA PRIZES of up to $15,000 are up for grabs for Murray Region artists as part of this year’s MAMA Art Prize. The new MAMA Art Prize is in its first year but there has been an art prize in the region since 1947 when AlburyCity Council gave £75 (about $150) to Albury Arts Society, creating the first municipal art prize in NSW. Today, the biennial prize consists of four awards that are dedicated to creating opportunities for artists in the shires of Wentworth, Balranald, Wakool, Conargo, Murray, Urana, Jerilderie, Berrigan, Greater Hume Shire, Denil-
iquin, Corowa, Albury, Wodonga, Indigo and Towong. Director Jacqui Hemsley said MAMA, which had attracted more than 50,000 visitors since it opened in October, needed to increase its regional collection. “MAMA is dedicated to supporting and encouraging artists working in the regions, Ms Hemsley said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce Murray artists to Albury audiences and increase the profile and awareness of the creative talent and excellence right here in regional Australia.
“We encourage regional artists to apply and meet fellow artists, present themselves and their work to new audiences and have an opportunity for an exhibition in MAMA. Entries close on Friday 27 May at 4pm and are sought from any areas of the visual arts. The MAMA Art Prize is valued at over $15,000 consisting of four awards: MAMA Art Prize Acquisitive Winner - $3000 prize; Susan Moorhead Memorial Acquisition Award - $2000 prize (for emerging artists living within 100km of Albury-Wodonga); Jennifer Bowskill Acquisition
