While both groups have said they are pleased with the outcome and the selected plan for the trail, there are still some reservations from environmental groups. “It’s a great outcome for YRMTB and great for Council and good for community, but the cost is to the environment,” Ms Worsnop said. “I am not against mountain biking, its great sport and I encourage people to do it and it’s very important. “It’s a good outcome not our preferred outcome. Volunteers have worked there for 40 years and the volunteers’ work is not being respected as it should be.” All groups have made a commitment to work with each other in maintaining the trail and say they are glad to have years of tension over this plan behind them. “We would like to thank FoMEA and MEEPPA for sharing their knowledge with us and look forward to working alongside them in the future to ensure this area continues to be environmentally protected and maintained,” Mr Rose said.

YARRA Ranges Council unanimously voted in favour of establishing a recreational Mountain Bike Trail in Mount Evelyn at a meeting on Tuesday 23 February. The 1.6km trail will run along the north boundary of the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Reserve. The decision comes after years of discussion and compromise between stakeholder groups and council and was option 5 of 6 for the trail. The Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA), the Friends of Mount Evelyn Aqueduct (FoMEA), the Mount Evelyn Historical Society (MEHS) and the Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers (YRMTB) have been in discussions over this trail since 2014. Stakeholder groups FoMEA, MEEPPA and YRMTB all had representatives speak at the council meeting endorsing the option recommended by council to construct this particular track. Duncan Rose from the YRMTB and said they were very pleased to have come to a resolution with this plan. “YRMTB believe that option 5, the proposed fence line trail alignment will deliver an exciting and sustainable trail that will be an asset for both mountain bikers of all levels and the local community in general,” he said. “It is pleasing that after a long and at times frustrating process we seem to have found a location that will both satisfy environmental requirements and still provide the critical link track to the Silvan trails for mountain bikers.” President of MEEPPA Clare Worsnop also spoke in favour of option 5 though only under conditions that would see the sensitive environment of the reserve protected. “In recent weeks MEEPPA has decided to support the trail in option 5 as long as long as sufficient safeguards are put in place,” she said. The safeguards outlined by MEEPPA include: Minimising destruction during
