Top social space By MONIQUE KUZEFF A TWILIGHT market was a grand gesture to the opening of the Promenade at Junction Place last week as it represented one of many events that the new space is able to host. While the Promenade was the second public space to open at Junction Place, following the opening of Junction Square in early 2015, it stands as an integral part of central Wodonga linking the two historic railway buildings to the precinct. On Friday, the public space was officially opened by representatives of Places Victoria and the Wodonga Council including Parks Victoria general manager Precincts Simon Wilson and Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie. Mr Wilson said Junction Place was an area that would attract a wide range of population. “When it’s finished, there will be offices, retail shops and possibly a hotel or cinema, who knows what else, Mr Wilson said. “The idea is for parents and visitors to come by and have a picnic or to use the cafes, which are on either side of the Promenade, “It’s a very social and flexible area with a lot of open and hard standing space - we will see a really huge opportunity for events such as the twilight market here. The $1.25 million Promenade, which is Australia’s largest regional urban renewel project, was funded by Places Victoria with assistance from the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development’s National Stronger Regions Fund. Parks Victoria CEO Greg Anderson said the further establishment of Junction Place was

necessary for the growing population in the area. “With Wodonga’s population to grow in excess of 40 per cent over the next 20 years, the revitalisation of Junction Place is a necessary part for the catering of the city’s growing needs, Mr Anderson said. “It is a new public space for Wodonga and will be the hub of the new dining precinct within Junction Place, which will continue to grow with the newly opened Goods Shed Beer Cafe. “The precinct has already become a place to meet both day and night, and it is bringing you life to the former railway site which will be transformed into a new part of Albury Wodonga over the next 15 to 20 years. Construction of the Promenade began in August 2015, with Places Victoria contracting the City of Wodonga to construct the square on its behalf. Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie said a development like Junction Place only came together with good planning, time, money and effort and the community had already embraced the precinct. “What an exciting moment this community has worked very hard for it...it was nearly nine years ago when we saw the $45 million investment and removal of the railway from this site, and it has created a momentum for us to rebuild the heart of our city, she said. “The development of this precinct has seen us establish some fantastic retail and food businesses including Broad Gauge, BeanStation Cafe and the Goods Shed and some of our pop ups as well.
