Cash splash options By MONIQUE KUZEFF ALBURYCITY council has presented Albury and Lavington communities with several options for aquatic facilities to help in deciding which option would have the best outcome in the future. Sustaining the existing Albury and Lavington Swim Centres and/ or developing an indoor regional aquatic leisure centre at either Lauren Jackson Sports Centre or the Lavington Swim Centre were some of the options listed by SGL consultants. AlburyCity mayor Henk van de Ven said it was important that the community had a say in the decision. “The decision is about the future of our city, Cr van de Ven said. “I implore people when considering all the options to think about what a growing city is going to need in 20 to 40 years. “This is about future generations and, if we need to, ensuring that we leave a positive legacy that promotes Albury’s livability. Cr van de Ven said the council considered the return on investment from a social, economic and financial perceptive including long-term visitation and operating costs. All the options have been developed on a detailed business and financial modelling, with a productivity analysis showing ongoing operational costs and capital investment over a 10-year period. Cr van de Ven said upgrading and expanding aquatic facilities in Albury and Lavington will make a huge difference to Albury and surrounding communities. “There has been a calling from some sections of the community for an all-year round aquatic facility and while there are small all-year round facilities available they don’t cater for enough people, Cr van de Ven said.
Albury Council has presented a list of seven options for aquatic facilities in Albury and voted to ask the community what it believed was the best option for the future. Picture: SUPPLIED “The current facilities are reaching the end of their life and you always have to upgrade infrastructure, it’s one of those things you have to do due to depreciation. AlburyCity Council is looking at both loan and grant funding options as expenditure for the new aquatic facility developments when a decision has been finalised. Cr van de Ven said the expenditure would be spread over the years for present and future generations to share costs. “We wanted to spread the cost over future generations for those people who are going to use the facilities in the future and in this way it will be much more palatable, he said. The project costs would range from $20 million to retain existing swim facilities to $36 million for a regional aquatic leisure centre with a $51.5 million dollar indoor pool. Albury residents were encouraged to put forward their preferred option and provide the council with feedback before Tuesday 22 March.
