Ambo move fight By ANEEKA SIMONIS INTENSIVE care paramedics fear they will be delayed up to 15 minutes when responding to emergency call-outs in Pakenham, Berwick and the wider Cardinia Shire region following news their base may be relocated. A Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedic suspects the medical support unit will be relocated to Hampton Park from Narre Warren, resulting in possible emergency response delays or being “dragged” from their dedicated service area to places such as nearby Dandenong. “Theoretically, it could increase MICA response by as much as 15 minutes,” said the paramedic, who wished to remain anonymous.
“Considering operational demand where the majority of our work is in Berwick and Pakenham, managers in the area see it as a bad decision. They are trying to fight it.” The branch subject to potential closure is located at Victor Crescent in Narre Warren. Ambulance Victoria’s Metropolitan East Regional director Cath Anderson confirmed the site is being assessed for closure, with the lease on the property soon to expire. “The current site does not meet our design standards and lacks the usual amenities of a modern ambulance branch such as a garage and training rooms,” she said. “As such, we are reviewing our options to ensure that we are in the best location to service the
community as well as providing a workplace that is modern, comfortable and suitable for our paramedics in the long term.” Ms Anderson said the Victor Crescent branch was separate to a larger nearby branch where the Berwick paramedic team were relocated to a few years ago. Population data, current response performance and predicted future workload data will be closely considered by Ambulance Victoria before deciding whether to relocate the 24-hour MICA service. “The area is also well serviced by 24-hour ambulance branches at Hampton Park, Berwick, Beaconsfield, Lyndhurst, Pakenham and Officer,” Ms Anderson said.

Speed bump wheel spin hoons warned By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM RESIDENTS of a Pakenham street say the style of speed bumps installed on the road attracts hoons who are using the bumps to propel their cars. But Cardinia Shire Council said the bumps are bus cushions and have been effective in improving road safety. Cardinia shire councillor Collin Ross said he has been contacted by distressed Henty Street residents who would not speak directly to the News for fear of retribution. Speed bumps installed on the street are long and have a flat white surface on their tops which Cr Ross said is used by hoons to propel their car wheels. “You can see the top of the speed bump which is made of plastic is used to start the wheels spinning, then the hoons move forward onto the bitumen road, creating a screeching noise and burnout,” he said. Residents reported that they are regularly disturbed by the noise between 11pm and 3am. On Wednesday 10 February the council’s Senior Traffic Engineer Nicholas Charrett said that bus cushions and kerb outstands installed in early 2014 as part of the Federal BlackSpot Program had been successful in making the road safer. Before and after traffic surveys, crash data and police reports have all indicated that the humps have been successful. “Based on these results, and general feedback, it appears that the installa-

PAKENHAM police are seeking to reunite a burglary victim with a set of stolen keys which were found on a charged teen. Police recovered the keys on a 17-year-old alleged burglar following his arrest at Pakenham Market Place Shopping Centre on 14 December. The Kensington teen was charged over a series of aggravated burglaries committed throughout Pakenham. He was captured by police after being chased down by a victim who was woken up during the aggravated burglary attempt. Police suspect the keys belong to the victim of a previous burglary and are seeking to return them. Inquiries have been made relating to the attached identification tag yet an owner has not been identified. The owner of the keys is being asked to contact Constable Moorfield at the Pakenham police station on 5945 2500.

CASEY’S police chief has hit out at residents who are willing to let the area’s Neighbourhood Watch (NW) die as crime grows at one of the highest rates in the state. Inspector Paul Breen said that it was a crucial “institution we can’t let die”. “As local commander I’m sick to death of hearing people say what are we doing about the high crime rate, ice, hoons, so I say what the bloody hell are you doing?” “We’re in it together,” Insp Breen said. “We absolutely can’t let NW fold, it’s a real institution across Victoria, it’s a great initiative and, above all else, it keeps people aware - it’s about looking after each other’s back.” Insp Breen said the only reason NW will fall over in Casey is because of a lack of community interest and engagement. “Don’t tell me out of the 29 suburbs in Casey we can’t find someone from each suburb to become NW champions,” he said. “In an area with such a high crime rate and family violence and hooning and drug use, it’s about time we committed to NW, stepped up and fully supported crime prevention.” Insp Breen said Casey police are looking for NW local champions to continue the crime preventative work. “Above all else, it’s people being proactive and aware, looking out for their neighbours’ property and actually having each other’s backs.”
Currently NW groups operate in 57 out of the 79 municipalities in Victoria and by March that number may be forced to drop. Casey NW secretary of 15 years Jennifer Baird and treasurer of 35 years 67-year-old Ken Bailey have said they are past their use-by dates. “I need a break from treasury roles, I’m still going to stay on the committee, just give up my position as treasure,” Mr Bailey said. “I’m very worried it will have to fold - membership numbers has always been a concern.” Ms Baird, who has to give up her role due to her health, said members will assess if the community service “will have to call it quits” after their March meeting. “I’m more concerned because I don’t think the young ones really understand the need for it,” she said. A sad Ms Baird said installing a NW sign in Lyndhurst will be the group’s last job if they’re forced to close. “The signs have had positive outcomes for estates and I think crime will increase without NW,” she said. “Our signs deter people and I had feedback from Marriott Waters’ residents saying after the sign was installed the crime rate significantly dropped.” Casey NW currently has 2000 home crime prevention packs which are due to be distributed. Council leads push for more Challenge program funding
All ears on UFOs By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FOX Mulder has given the Victorian UFO Action (VUFOA) group a lot of work in the last week. Ever since the fictional X-Files detective mentioned the Kelly Cahill case - one of the most important UFO cases in the world - on the TV Show reboot recently, the infamous 1993 alleged UFO sighting in Narre Warren has shot back into the public eye. Now, more than 20 years later, two leading VUFOA investigators - founder Andrew Arnold and Ben Hurle - are hoping the XFiles mention will see the witnesses from the case come forward again. “This is a good opportunity to perhaps draw some of the witnesses out,” Mr Hurle said. “Now it’s the 21st century, it might be really nice time to re-visit it again with 21st century investigators and we can look at it again from a new perspective.” The big problem is they have no names, only pseudonym names. “We have snippets of information and because the case is in the top five in the world, it really does need the attention brought back to it,” Mr Hurle said. “Not to bring these people out to parade them in front of the public ... but perhaps for their own benefit as a part of the process.” Kelly claimed that in August 1993 she was abducted by aliens while driving home with her husband along Belgrave-Hallam Road. Ms Cahill, who was 27 at the time, told Today Tonight in the 1990s that she spotted what looked like an airship the size of a swimming pool with a ring of orange lights in the Narre Warren paddock. Extra-terrestrial beings are said to prefer areas near open bodies of water, like Lysterfield Lake, and power lines. At the time she said she saw two other cars also stop to investigate the alleged UFO, and these two sets of separate witnesses - key to why the case is infamous - later corroborated Ms Cahill’s story with investigators. But the memory of this confrontation only came later. In the early days after the incident, Kelly and her husband, and presumably the other witnesses, couldn’t account for about an hour and a half of time. “The beings came charging across the paddock, they (the witnesses) lose their sight, they can’t see - so they’re blinded,” Mr Hurle said “So they’ve effectively been hobbled, stunned if you like. Stunned by the creatures and when they wake up they’re in the car, travelling back, they’re driving. “And I can only make the assumption it was the same for the other people.” Now the investigators at VUFOA are back on the case, not that they ever left.
And unlike Fox Mulder, these investigators are real, and they’re calling on the witnesses to come forward again. “There’s nothing like getting it from the horse’s mouth,” Mr Arnold said. “We want to do our own independent investigation into it, hopefully speak to them directly and just let them see what they say. “They might remember more now than they did at the time.” When people go to the trouble of coming forward and there’s a level of substantial evidence, Mr Hurle said, that’s where people should have an open mind. “The potential has to exist for these things,” he said. CASEY council will call on the State Government to provide interim funding for the Challenge Family Violence program, with the royal commission findings delayed until the end of March. Community providers have been told they must wait for news on funding until the Royal Commission into Family Violence releases its findings, which now won’t be made public until 29 March after the commission was granted a onemonth extension in December. But in a notice of motion carried last week, Cr Amanda Stapledon urged Casey council to write to the Andrews Government, seeking interim funding for the challenge program, which dried up in November. The future of the Challenge Family Violence program which ran for three years and engaged community leaders across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong - is still up in the air. “What we’re saying is family violence hasn’t stopped. Can we have some funding until such time as the royal commission has made its decision?” Cr Stapledon told Star News. “We’re asking for support in the interim until the findings have been released. “This was a really effective program that helped educate
and support people in this area, it was a unified approach we had to addressing issues in the three municipalities. “Without the funding, families are left unsupported and more vulnerable.” Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson said the government was directing an $81.3 million package to ensure “those impacted by harm are supported.” “The Andrews Labor Government is fixing Victoria’s broken system and doing more to keep those who suffer from family violence safe,” she said. “With the Royal Commission into Family Violence well underway, we are directing our $81.3 million package to ensure those impacted by this harm are supported. “The royal commission will consider the importance of preventative responses in its recommendations that are to be delivered on 29 March.“ Shadow Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue has criticised the government’s decision to scrap the funding, saying there was “no excuse” to halt the funding at this time. Today, most political observers and analysts around the world, including members of Merkel’s own political party, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, agree to say that their strong leader has made a colossal historic mistake. Angela Merkel’s popularity has plummeted very low after the mass rape of girls and women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve. Likewise, French President Francois Hollande has been doing his ‘mea culpa’ following the unwarranted and unjustified terrorist attack in Paris on 13 November 2015. In light of the above, every sensible Australian citizen would feel terribly shocked by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’s decision to allow 267 asylum seekers, including 37 children to settle in Victoria. Such a decision is “wrong” and “needless” because it goes against the Australian Federal Government policy on immigration; a policy that has been praised by many European leaders so far. Does the Premier of Victoria pretend that he has more compassion for asylum seekers (mostly economic migrants) than the Premier of New South Wales? Can he pretend that his State Government is endowed with a greater feeling of human kindness that the Federal Government? What does the Premier think about the lucrative business of unscrupulous people smugglers? What is more alarming, however, is the fact that the Andrews Government not only challenges the Federal Government offshore immigration detention policy but also defies a ruling by the High Court on that issue. I, for one, believe that our High Court judges deserve a little more respect from the Victorian State Government. It’s a wrong message that the Premier is sending to the rest of the community, most particularly to our young people. Instead, let’s all say together: “Long live the High Court, the highest court in the Australian judicial system! Long Live Australia!” Eliezer Francois, Endeavour Hills.

Rates cap: easy way out THE question is will Casey council have a financial crisis due to any rates cap or are we really seeing a management problem? According to Lachlan Moorhead’s report (Council Bids To Break Cap, Journal News, 8 February) Casey Mayor Sam Aziz, claims Casey “council was acting in the best interests of ratepayers” by seeking to apply for a rates variation above 2.5 per cent from the Essential Services Commission. Cr Aziz has also publicly claimed that Casey will be faced with a multi-million dollar financial deficit due to rates capping in future. Cr Aziz has not informed residents and ratepayers that Casey council also has the capacity to compensate for any shortfall in revenue from substantial productivity offsets by varying its own often controversial spending patterns. Council decided to spend $125 million on the Bunjil Place project. This project cannot in anyway be described as an essential community service especially in view of the fact that council is aware that future new sub-divisions will need more family and children’s centres and recreational facilities. Casey council also voted to support an overseas trip to China for up to six Casey councillors and staff. Casey has also used
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS ratepayers’ finances to promote the EastWest Link and the promotion of Bunjil Place. Only 21 councils have registered an intention to apply for a rates cap variation. This means that most councils have found ways to achieve productivity gains and match the expectations of their local communities. If Casey has financial problems they may really need to look at their CEO Mike Tyler whom they keep reappointing without advertising his job, even though many community residents no longer have confidence in his leadership. Lame ducks I WRITE regarding the boarding houses to be built in Brookland Greens (We Won’t Share, News, 28 January). I find it quite a laugh how Casey councillor Geoff Ablett has got on board to oppose this being built. At the meeting at the Cranbourne Turf Club we had the top managers from Casey council telling us their hands were tied, so what does that tell me? Council is supporting the residents knowing full well they cannot make a decision to have this development stopped, making the council look good and Geoff Ablett look good for the next state election. Liberal MP David Davis was also there supporting the Brookland Greens residents. Remember, he was in government before Labor and they did nothing to change this loophole. Casey council, knowing they can’t do anything, makes them look like lame ducks. Where was this council for the residents when we had the methane gas issue? Were their hands tied then as well? UFO fever has landed in Narre Warren. THE Star News reporter who has helped reopen the X-Files investigation into the famous Narre Warren UFO abduction has visited the scene of the incident.
The story of Kelly Cahill’s alien abduction in a Narre Warren paddock had gone quiet for the past 20 years but was highlighted in the new series of the paranormal X-Files TV show. In the show Agent Mulder quizzes another character about the depth of his UFO-hunting credentials and in particular the Cahill case. Our reporter was keen to learn more about the incident and accompanied two UFO investigators to the scene of the alleged 1993 incident along the Belgrave-Hallam Road which included seven-foot tall aliens, a beam of light, and an hour and a half of unaccounted time. He has no intention of being caught out if Agent Mulder ever puts him on the spot. SADLY police last week confirmed a 68-yearold Noble Park man was one of four victims on board the plane bound for Tasmania which tragically crashed into waters off Barwon Heads.
A 55-year-old Mordialloc man, 63-year-old Black Rock woman and a 65-year-old Black Rock man were also on board the ill-fated plane which took off from Moorabbin Airport. The aircraft crashed about two kilometres off Collendina Beach between Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, and water police have been scouring the ocean floor since the crash. A fisherman who was out on the water at the time witnessed the accident and contacted police. SIXTIETH wedding anniversaries don’t come around every day. This week a loving Berwick couple will celebrate the special milestone together along with their family. A Star News journalist went out to speak to the elderly couple who were pleased as punch to share their love story - which began at the Dandenong dance a long time ago. Jail for bomb By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NARRE Warren South man has been convicted of placing a home-made shrapnel bomb in a gutter near a railway station. Samuel James Nagle, 37, had been observed sitting on Haughton Road, Oakleigh, with the explosive device under his leg about 10.30pm on 1 September, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. The bomb consisted of two butane gas containers taped to a container of screws and a petrol-soaked cloth. Bomb Squad police officers deemed the device was capable of igniting and exploding if in contact with a flame or sufficient heat, the court was told on 8 February. Nagle told police officers at the time that the device was “probably what the guys in that car were going to throw at me”. As he sat there, the fatherof-three said he was carrying a knife, a syringe, ice and a poptop container of petrol. During a search, a bottle of GHB and a zip-lock bag of ice

were found on his person. In a police interview, he initially claimed the bomb was not his, and had been placed by someone else. Nagle’s lawyer told the court that the accused was under “delusional, paranoid beliefs to do with drug use” at the time of the offence. “He came to certain conclusions in his head and had this device with him. He admits to the offending.” Nagle also pleaded guilty to possessing a laser pointer, which he beamed at females outside a Lynbrook supermarket, and to possessing parts of a home-made firearm. On 4 January, Nagle was discovered with the gun parts and cannabis by PSOs at Clayton railway station. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Kerryn Savin told the court the gun parts were “not in a useable form”. Nagle’s lawyer said the accused had told police that he made the firearm to harm himself. The accused’s criminal history was “drug motivated”,
and his past blighted by homelessness and drug use, the lawyer said. “He has an address ... He hopes to have the opportunity to have support in the community.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Nagle’s “disorganised, delusional thinking” at the time of the bomb threat, as well as the injury risk to people walking to Oakleigh railway station. He said it was difficult sentencing a person whose mental health had now stabilised during a month in remand custody. “I hope things go well for you, Sam. “On the face of it, you seem a gentle individual. But with mental health issues, you do not help yourself with using drugs.” Nagle was sentenced to 36 days jail - already served in pre-sentence remand - and a 12-month community corrections order with supervision, drug testing and mental health treatment. Nagle was ordered to provide a DNA sample to police.

Whites mark diamond love By LACHLAN MOORHEAD HOW can 60 years of marriage be distilled into one sentence? In the case of Berwick couple Ian and Evelyn White, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday 11 February, Ian puts it simply. “I must have been alright or we still wouldn’t be together,” Ian, 88, laughed. Ian and Evelyn, who is 79, originally met many moons ago at the local dance held regularly at the Dandenong Town Hall. The year was 1953 when they first met, but the wedding bells didn’t start ringing until three years later. When Evelyn’s older sister Dot and Ian’s friend Fred decided to get married, the other two wanted to follow suit. What eventuated was a novel idea - a double wedding. “Dot and Fred decided to get married and my Dad said we were not allowed to get married until we were 21,” Evelyn said. “But my sister and I decided for a double wedding, she was 21 and I was 19. That was in 1956 at St James Church in Dandenong. In the 60 years that followed there have been a plethora of wonderful memories. Those which top the list are the birth of the couple’s six children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Safe to say family birthdays and celebrations - like the one that will be held on Sunday 14 February for Ian and Evelyn’s wedding anniversary - end up being very large affairs. “Family’s one of the big things, even when everybody left home it was still busy,” Evelyn said.

‘Brave’ call By GEORGIA WESTGARTH POLICE and Corrections Minister Wade Noonan’s decision to take leave from his ministerial duties to receive counselling has been praised by Cranbourne Senior Sergeant Daniel Baynes. “I think it was really courageous and brave,” Sen Sgt Baynes said of Mr Noonan’s three-month leave of absence. “I wasn’t expecting it and it’s been great to see him supported.” Mr Noonan issued a statement on Monday 8 January saying he would take a leave of absence from his position in the State Government and Parliament, citing the grim nature of his ministerial job. “It has been difficult to cope with the constant exposure to details of unspeakable crimes and traumatic events that are an everyday part of my role and the accumulation of these experienc-
es has taken an unexpected toll,” he said in a statement. “I need time to receive further support and assistance including professional counselling. “This has been a difficult decision but I believe it is the right one.” Sen Sgt Baynes, who has been in the force for 16 years, said the high profile leave might help to break down barriers. “Sometimes there is stigma attached with mental health issues and people involved in emergency services have to deal with the worse things society has to offer. “It shows he’s human, everyone is human and people do react differently to highly traumatic situations. “In some members of the force you can see instances weigh them down while others can move on. “When you are dealing with
the victims of serious crime, sexual assaults and family violence face to face the impact is really profound,” he said. In the statement, Mr Noonan thanked his wife and family for their love and encouragement and Sen Sgt Baynes said that was an important point. “Victoria Police has local peer support programs and if someone has been to a suicide they get contacted by our clinical welfare services. “And our members have the ability to tap into professional help and that’s extended to families of police members as well.” He said that for many police officers the job doesn’t finish at the end of their shift. “We get people who perform very well at work but when they go home they are struggling you never know what people are dealing with behind the scenes,” he said.
SHOPPING for just five minutes has cost one Casey resident their Honda motorbike. The red and white Honda CRF70 was stolen from a shopping centre car park on BaxterTooradin Road in Pearcedale. Police have released a CCTV image of the stolen bike on the rear of a white ute. The ute was also carrying a large round hay bale and what looks like a small trailer from a ride-on mower. The bike was stolen by two unknown males who left the scene in the ute on Thursday 28 January at 7pm. Police have also released a stock image of the Honda CRF70 bike.

BARELY two months after release from prison, a man has been charged with burgling Casey Grammar School and a home, breaking into a car and trying to break into another home in Cranbourne early on 7 February. During a bail hearing the following day, John Hockhing, 29, denied the home-related offences - aggravated by the residents being home in each case. According to a police summary handed into Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Hockhing had been released from jail on 23 December 2015 after serving the full term of a two-and-a-half-year jail sentence. His “extensive” criminal history included armed robbery, aggravated burglary, recklessly causing injury, handling stolen goods, possessing ice, possessing a dangerous article and failing to answer bail.
During his hearing, he stared at arresting police officer Detective Senior Constable Nicole Spinks of Casey CIU. From the dock, he asked her: “You f ... ing smirking at me?” Police allege Hockhing admitted to stealing a laptop computer and mobile phones from Casey Grammar School’s main office in Cranbourne East about 6am on 7 February. The accused had allegedly entered the school through possibly unlocked front doors, and was chased by a security guard about 6.45am. His girlfriend’s car keys were found on the school grounds; the girlfriend said that Hockhing had borrowed the car overnight, which he had fitted with an allegedly stolen rear number plate. Sometime that morning, he was accused of rifling through living-
room cupboards and kitchen containers, and stealing a canvas bag and personal documents from a home in Childers Street. He was also accused of unsuccessfully trying to break-in through a bedroom window of a home in Sladen Street. About 8.30am, a “sweating and agitated” Hockhing allegedly broke into a Toyota Yaris parked on the front lawn of a residence in Cameron Street, about 700 metres from the grammar school. He allegedly damaged the ignition with a screwdriver in a failed bid to start the car. Nothing was stolen, but he left behind a canvas sports bag with two stolen phones, school timetables and a scientific calculator believed to be from Casey Grammar, and two power bills from a Cranbourne residence. At various times during the spree, he was alleged to be wearing
a fleuro vest, a black T-shirt, a white T-shirt and finally no shirt at all. A black and a white T-shirt with blood stains was also found in the bag, police claim. As he fled, Hockhing also allegedly dropped items through Cranbourne such as laptop cords tagged as belonging to Casey Grammar, a stolen phone and paperwork from the school, a stolen laptop and computer bag with two stolen phones from the school. Hockhing told the court he showed cause for bail by having family support, including a place “up in the bush away from all the drugs and stuff”. He also had links with an employment agency and a possible drug rehab placement. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen refused bail because of the accused’s “too serious” prior history and recent release from prison.
Burnouts and police chase before arrests By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A POLICE chase involving the dog squad, air wing and highway patrol brought two men to a stop - after they performed burnouts around a police car in Lyndhurst, before being arrested in Frankston. The young Carrum Downs men aged 23 and 25 years old were driving a stolen Statesman sedan, when police noticed the careless and brazen act off the Westernport Highway in Lyndhurst, on Thursday 4 February. Detective Sergeant Stuart Freeman said the pair were doing burnouts around a parked police car. “They were creating a dangerous scenario before they fled,” Det Sgt Freeman said. A search was called for the men, which included a helicopter to help the highway patrol

and tried to escape,” Det Sgt Freeman said. The duo was intercepted by police in Chestfield Court, Frankston, after they smashed into a fence trying to get away. “They decamped the crashed car and the canine unit tracked them down, they were arrested and charged,” Det Sgt Freeman said. The chase ended at 7.20pm and it’s believed the car was stolen from Bittern. An onlooker told Star News that police had put down spike strips on the road near the court. “The car tried to do a U-turn and got wedged between a tree and a small brick wall,” they said. “Police inspected the car and bagged up items.” “One man gave himself up over the fence.” Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

College farm set to expand By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S a type of hands-on learning not every Victorian secondary student gets, and it all starts from the ground up. Year 9 and 10 students at Hillcrest Christian College are growing, maintaining and caring for a small farm. Agriculture and horticulture teacher David Lott said the students had built a glowing sweet corn crop, one so good that they had harvested it and frozen it for later. “The students look after lambs, grow vegetables and plants and will soon be caring for some pigs and cattle, too,”
Mr Lott said. And the class has just made way for a new, five-year-old best friend, by the name of Margaret. “Margaret is a Suffolk sheep, she will be a part of the school’s breeding program and will form the nucleus of our sheep stud,” Mr Lott said. In his 11th year teaching at the school, Mr Lott said Margaret will act as a companion for the school’s seven lambs. “It’s great for the students because they can learn about the sheep industry and learn firsthand how to handle, groom and prepare sheep for exhibition at agriculture shows. “Later in the year, our plan
is to take the sheep to the Royal Melbourne Show and also the Bendigo Sheep and Wool Expo,” he said. But with more crops and animals on the way, Mr Lott said the experience was “brilliant” for students. “The real benefits are in terms of the students’ ability to judge and appreciate animals, not just sheep and they can use the same skills they have learnt and apply them to cattle and horses.” “Showing the animals also gives them a chance at public speaking and developing presentation skills and it’s definitely going to help them improve their job prospects.”

Man punched by four men in Mac attack FOUR men of Islander appearance punched a 39-year-old male from Cranbourne in the face as he was walking out of a McDonald’s restaurant in Cranbourne South. The brazen robbery took place in the McDonalds car park, off the South Gippsland Highway, on Wednesday 3 February at 9pm. The victim was carrying food to his car when the group approached him and pulled him to the ground. Refuse fire could be tip of the iceberg NARRE Warren police are appealing for witnesses after a fire was lit at the Narre Warren tip this month. The fire was swiftly put out by CFA about 4pm on Sunday 7 February. But Detective Sergeant Stuart Freeman holds concerns for the vulnerable location on Quarry Road where the fire was started. “Someone who lights small fires can move on to light bigger ones,” he said. The fire was doused without significant damage to the area.

Building thief tapped by off-duty cop AN EAGLE-EYED off-duty police officer spotted a Hampton Park man as he was trying steal building supplies from a construction site in Clyde North. The officer called for back-up and the 31-year-old was arrested while he was dismantling bathroom and shower fittings at 9.05am on Saturday 6 February. Police later searched his home and recovered more than $2000 in stolen goods, all from houses under construction. He was charged with burglary and theft.

A NARRE Warren man has been left with injuries to his eye and forearm after he was threatened with a knife on a Doveton bus. The bus stopped on Box Street in Doveton where the two male offenders fled on foot after demanding the 55-year-old victim’s wallet. The attempted armed robbery occurred on Tuesday 2 February at 2.45pm, and Narre Warren police are appealing for witnesses. One of the offenders was described as 177cm tall, Caucasian with blond hair. Health care gets fresh By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE North is home to a fresh take on healthcare, with traditional medical centre ideals thrown out the window paving way for hot desking, mobile staff and consulting rooms with a difference. The innovative take on preventative health and general practice centres on its custom interiors and consultation rooms which mean less time waiting and no reception desk. HealthMint Medical Centre at The Eve shopping precinct opened in October, even sparking interest from Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who said the technology based systems are ‘turning medi-
cine on its head.’ Since opening its doors the centre has accrued around 250 patients and holds an even stronger online audience through its Facebook page. Owners, Chantelle Brott and Dr Paul Tescher said many of their architectural choices grew out of negative patient experiences. “There are no desks in the consulting rooms and doctors use a tablet and swing table rather than sitting at a desk and turning away from the patient to make notes,” Chantelle said. The duo made the decision to ensure their patients were the centre of the room, enabling the GP to keep eye contact throughout the consultation.
The user friendly approach to the centre starts with the booking process, which can be done online, over the phone or by using the HealthMint app. And patients log themselves in using tablets which have replaced the need for a seated receptionist. “In the future we want to have our reception staff work more like a concierge and have them mobile around the practice, assisting patients and keeping the checking in and out flowing,” Chantelle said. Decorated with high-end contemporary furniture, the waiting room has become a major draw card for the new Casey business.
“We’ve had people walk in and say this is our new practice, before even sitting down with me to discuss their health - that’s how powerful the space is,” Dr Tescher said. The centre includes eight consultation rooms, a pathology room and treatment room and a lot of natural light, something the young entrepreneurs insisted on when buying the premises. Chantelle and Paul are hopeful that the therapeutic space they have created along with their efficient processes encourage people to visit the doctor even when they aren’t sick. “We think health care could and should be better and we want to focus on preventative health strategies,” Chantelle said.

Her work with Rotary has played a key role in the global efforts to lift youth participation in the organisation, more than doubling engagement in the last five years. An accomplished global keynote speaker, Ms Ransom has presented across six continents, including delivering a Peace Charter to the Dalai Lama and addressing the G20’s Central Bank Governors and Finance Minister. Spotlight on CHIPS brains By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CATHY Wieckmann provides a fun and happy sanctuary for children at their toughest of times. A husband and wife team, Eric and Cathy have been doing what they love for the past 17 years, and after this year’s Australia Day, both have Casey’s highest of honours. Cathy was awarded City of Casey Citizen of the Year on Australia Day for her work behind the scenes at CHIPS, Christians Helping In Primary Schools. Cathy calls herself the background figure to her husband’s public approach to their not-forprofit organisation. “Eric was awarded in 2005,” she said. “I was very shocked to receive one, too, I’m happy to be in the background- they said I was the brains behind it, but I wouldn’t t go that far.” The organisation has been taking children who have or are in the midst of highly traumatic experiences on a camp to Phillip Island, where they each have their own buddy who volunteers their time. “Our aim isn’t to fix children we just want parents, carers and children to realise that they are of intrinsic value and whatever the gifting and capabilities of that child is, we want to encourage it,” Cathy said. “We believe that healing from trauma and grief can come from spending time with groups and in a community environment.” The CHIPS Chaplaincy program is now in 17 schools across Casey, Cardinia and Knox and liaises with 14 chaplains along with their beloved camps, which has a waiting list. “We take everyone no matter their needs and we have a reg-

“Years later she wrote to us to say how well they are going now and that she felt the ‘life gets better camp’ was a turning point in their healing.” Extremely humbled by Casey’s recognition of her inspiring organisation, Cathy put the award down to her volunteers who make their work possible.

The St Francis Xavier student from Narre Warren has always been an avid performer and said the award he was nominated for by fellow Arts Hour co-host Bob Halsall will be treasured forever. “I am very honoured to have received an award for something I am truly passionate about,” Oliver said. The year nine student was nominated for his active presence in Casey’s performing arts scene and said acting and singing will always play a huge part in his life. “I eat, sleep and breathe the arts. “I hope to have a successful career as an actor or singer and dream to one day perform on Broadway and London’s West End and direct and star in my own films,” he said.
Oliver is currently rehearsing for his role as Joe Casey in his school's next musical, Our House. Oliver was presented with his Australia Day award alongside four other major winners on Tuesday 26 January and said a lot of his achievements are thanks to being a Casey resident. “Living in Casey has given
me some fantastic performance opportunities of which I am truly grateful,” he said. Oliver won the junior Casey’s Got Talent in 2011 and will perform in The Boy from Oz at the Cardinia Cultural Centre next month.

Youth set to shine By RUSSELL BENNETT THE new Pakenham Warriors Youth League Men’s Big V basketball side could yet prove to be the hottest sporting ticket in town. On the eve of their inaugural season, the boys from what is a 23-and-under side can’t wait to show what they’re made of. The young Warriors will be led by two players who are particularly familiar with local basketball fans, with former Pakenham Big V men’s players James Magrath and Lee Belton serving as co-captains. Another former Pakenham senior Big V player, Matt Darcy, and newcomer Cameron Andre will round out the four-man leadership group. Magrath is coming back into the Warriors system after some time away and he can’t wait for the season to begin. “Just with the boys who were picked out - the centres and the guards - I think it’s looking like a
good season for us,” he said. “I’m just excited to be back.” Magrath said one of the reasons for his return was the opportunity to again play alongside great mates Belton and Darcy. “With the new players who’ve jumped from the juniors to the bigger league, it’s just about showing them what to expect,” he said of the Warriors’ pre-season. “It’s not going to be a little touch and foul, it’s going to be pushing and shoving - really physical. “In training sessions we’re trying to get them used to the structure and trying to stay composed and not to rush the plays.” Assistant coach Tristan Blacka said there were no expectations placed upon the side, except continued development throughout its first season. “When we were last here two years ago there was no (youth men’s) program and things were a bit different,” Belton added.

GIVEN a fright by lowly St Kilda, Pakenham Pumas had to toil to get back in the hunt and maintain its winning ways with a 10-9 triumph. It started with a four-run opening innings led by a forced run walked in by Shaun Fahy. James Mills, Travis Hough and Simon Ferris - who was brought in off a “sacrifice steal” from Jay Ziersch - sneak on home for the fourth. The match went back and forth from there as the visitors pushed on, despite losing their starting catcher to a facial injury. St Kilda fought its way to the front, but Pakenham didn’t bow down to pressure. The Pumas dug in and worked their way into scoring positions late in the clash - winning in the end of a St Kilda error - to keep the juggernaut rolling with one round to go before finals. “It was very pleasing considering we were two runs down going into the ninth,” Pakenham coach Shaun Fahy said. “Travis Hough and Simon Ferris were brought in on an RBI double off Wayne Porter, then with JZ (Ziersch) on base, bases loaded, Brett Findlay got a wild pitch at the end and that got us through.” Starting 17-year-old Brett Findlay on the mound, the young Puma found his feet and made some strong plays before being relieved by Jay Ziersch

Demons stay focused By DAVID NAGEL UNEXPECTED intensity engulfed the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division on Saturday as Kooweerup turned the calm before the storm into a very special day for the club. Round 13 was expected to be smooth sailing - with teams jostling for position - before heavy seas arrived and the Demons and Tooradin settled down for a fight for their cricketing lives in round 14. But that all changed during the middle of last week, the Demons standing down their dual-premiership captain-coach Michael Giles after a late-night incident away from the club. The decision was tough, but it bonded the players to the point where they were an unstoppable force against Merinda Park at Donnelly Reserve on Saturday. And not surprisingly it was a heart-and-soul player who led the charge, with John Bright (4/37) bowling beautifully as the Demons rolled the Cobras for an even 150 in the 52nd over. Bright was supported by former Cobra Jess Mathers (3/36) and upand-coming star Cody Miller (2/37), while Danny Diwell (71) - the captain - showed courage under fire for the home side. Here’s looking at you, Kia By EWAN KENNEDY KIA’S all-new Sorento has gone ultra stylish. The all-new Kia Sorento is offered in Si, SLi and Platinum grades. Prices begin at a reasonable $40,990 for a petrol two-wheel-drive Si and run up to $55,990 for a Platinum with the turbo-diesel and all-wheel-drive. Even the Sorento Si is well equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and mirrors and wood-look interior trim. The SLi has 18-inch alloys, the wood-look is extended to the steering wheel and centre console and there are sporty looking alloy pedals. Topping off the range is the Sorento Platinum with a huge sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel and a more powerful stereo. A feature we particularly liked in the Sorento Platinum is the choice of two-tone interior trim. The third generation look-at-me style certainly drew more than its fair share of looks during our test period. Sorento’s front end is big and bold, the bonnet is high and the grille has the familiar new-Kia design. Large cutouts for the foglights add to the effect and give it a bold wide look. The side profile also takes the big ‘n’ bold look with a deep window line that continues all the way to the rear. Sorento Si has an AM/FM audio

system with six speakers. There’s MP3, Bluetooth streaming, USB and Aux. Sportage SLi and the Platinum we tested used an Infinity Premium 10-speaker system with subwoofer and external amplifier. The system is operated through Kia’s audiovideo navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch TFT LCD touchscreen. The new Kia Sorento comes with a choice of petrol or diesel engines. The Sorento’s four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbo-diesel is a unit already familiar to us from other Kia models but has had significant changes. In its latest iteration it produces 147 kW of power and a big 441 Nm to torque, the latter from 1750 rpm to 2750 revs. The 3.3-litre V6 petrol is an all-new design and puts out 199 kilowatts of
power and 318 Nm of torque. The petrol powerplant is only offered in 2WD models. As befits its heavier duty use the diesel is used in Sorentos with all-wheel-drive. All Sorento models have a six-speed automatic as manuals are rapidly becoming a thing of the past in Australia. Sorento has a five-star safety rating from Australasian NCAP. There are six airbags, including front-to-rear curtain coverage. All models have ABS with brake assist, ESC, VSM (vehicle stability management), a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Platinum as tested added Lane Departure Warning, Smart Cruise Control, Blind-spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to the driver safety aids. The front seats are large, comfort-

able and support well. The second row pews can slide back and forward to juggle space. In their rearmost position they provide a huge amount of legroom for their occupants, meaning four large adults can travel in comfort if the back seats aren’t in use. The rearmost pair of seats and the centre seat in the second row are best left for children on anything other than short trips. The practical squared-off tail lets you carry a decent amount of luggage even when all seven seats are in use. With the seats down it’s positively cavernous. The centre-row seat has a 60 /40 split with a central panel that can fold down to become an armrest or opened all the way to allow for through loading of long items.
The body of the gen-three Kia Sorento has significantly increased rigidity over the previous model and also uses a lot of sound dampening materials. On the road we found the big Kia SUV to be smooth, quiet and comfortable. Sorento’s suspension and steering have a lot of Australian input. This firms it up in road grip without any great loss of comfort. The Sorento can be set to Sport or Eco modes - as keen drivers we preferred the Sport setting. Handling is competent, though don’t expect it to compete with the big name German SUVs in this class. Sorento is a large vehicle tuned for family comfort ahead of sporting pretensions. The variable settings do make it better than average for the Asian class but if you’re looking for driving excitement, forget it. During our test period fuel consumption of the turbo-diesel was in the nine to 10 litres per 100 kilometres range in around town driving, dropping to six to eight litres when on the open road or motorways. Kia’s all-new Sorento offers a nice combination of style, carrying capacity and sophistication and is already making a name for itself on the new-car sales charts.
