Rubber hits the road By LUKE VOOGT CLIFTON Springs teacher Philip Bignoux will ride his first Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race this month, just a week after his 40th birthday. Phillip said completing the ride would something he could look back on with pride. “I want to do it while I’m young and fit enough,” he said.
“I think it will be an amazing experience.” The father-of-two will ride 111km in the Momentum Energy People’s Ride, which he said was easily the farthest he’d ridden. “It’s kind of scary,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of crosswinds in the open areas.” Philip can’t wait to join “the great line up” of 3000 riders, which in-
cludes champion cyclist Mark Cavendish and, of course, Cadel Evans. “When we get to the finish, we’ve done the same thing they’ve done,” he said. “You feel like you’ve accomplished something.” Cheering him on at the sidelines will be his wife and his daughters. Phillip remembers riding a lot more when the girls were little.

“I used to ride with them in the bike trailer to Queenscliff, to give my wife a break,” he said. Phillip said he’s always loved riding, which has led to a strange collection in his shed. “I’ve kept every bike I’ve had so there are probably 14 bikes in there,” he said. “Each bike has little journey attached to it.”
Phillip has been training by crosstraining and riding from Drysdale Station to Ocean Grove - roughly 20km - a couple of times each week. He used to run half-marathons but started riding regularly again after a running injury. “I think that window is closing,” he said.
