The evening will include lots of fun for the whole family and will culminate in a visit from Santa Claus and fireworks which has been made possible through a grant through the Southern Downs Regional Council at 8pm. The evening will include whip cracking and the very popular chalk art competition and culminate in the major $1000 draw for the IGA Shopping vouchers. Both events will bring community spirit to the region and their own individual regional flavour. Mayor Blundell said he was

THE Christmas Spirit has hit the Southern Downs with houses decorated and big events planned for both Warwick and Stanthorpe over the next few days. With calendars filling up in the lead up to Christmas, Southern Downs Regional Council is reminding residents to set aside Sunday 20 December for Warwick’s 2015 Carols in the Park, which will showcase local performers and entertainers, and local businesses and community groups. This is a chance to gather friends and family, a picnic rug or chair and bring your singing voice to celebrate the festive season in Leslie Park, Palmerin Street. The festivities will kick off from 5pm with the Warwick City Band starting the music program at 5.30pm. Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said the Warwick Carols in the Park is simply a beautiful and relaxed family night where the town can celebrate Christmas and the blessing of living in a great community. “It will be an absolutely fantastic evening and I would encourage everyone to come along and be part of a great program,” he said “This year we’re very fortunate to have a team of locals on board; Susan Needer as musical co-ordinator, and Andy Wilmott from Soular Music and Tracey Gosney from Top Beat Entertainment who will look after all of our sound, lighting and staging requirements.” The three-hour program will include traditional carols as well as your favourite up-beat Christmas songs presented by The Choral Society, The Blue Violets, David and Sarah Hume and crowd favourites Emma Bell, Ebony Wickham and our very own mayor. The council is also pleased to announce James Blundell as our very special guest artist for the evening. Meanwhile the focus will turn to Stanthorpe on Tuesday night with the culmination of the Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Promotion. The month-long promotion has involved 39 local businesses and

“If you’ve had a long day at work it’s better to delay the trip until the next morning and avoid driving at times when you normally sleep. “On longer journeys share the driving if possible.” For more information, view the RACQ TV episode on fatigue: http://goo.gl/tCc3Sw.

QUEENSLAND’S peak motoring body took over the Gladfield Driver Reviver site near Warwick on Monday in a bid to reduce fatigue-related crashes these school holidays. RACQ warned motorists to remain alert behind the wheel as they entered a high-risk period on Queensland roads. RACQ executive manager Safety and Technical Policy Steve Spalding said last year fatigue contributed to about 15 per cent of the road toll. “Fatigue is one of the fatal five and called the silent killer for a reason,” Mr Spalding said. “Tiredness can drastically affect your ability to drive safely by reducing your attention level, slowing your reaction time and impairing your judgement. “Fatigue can quickly creep up on a driver with many not realising

Southern Downs Regional Council CEO David Keenan and QPS representative Shane Reid were keynote speakers at the event. The walk marked the end of 16 days of activism for Zonta which was aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence. A boost for their voices THE Speaker Social Night program has received a $7500 boost, thanks to the Southern Downs Employment Service. Employment Service manager Alan Jones presented Granite Belt Support Service with a cheque last Tuesday at the “Speakers Social Club”. Speakers Social Club, which is modelled on Toastmasters, was started by Granite Belt Support Service, seven years ago. Starting with 45 participants, this number has now swelled to 92.

The program aims to offer people with a disability access to a community social club, where they could meet new friends and gain confidence in public speaking. People with a disability, their family, friends, support workers and carers meet once per month and enjoy listening to speakers tell of their interests, families and hobbies and share a twocourse meal. Southern Downs Employment Service, which is primarily engaged in helping people with a disability gain employ-

ment, became aware that referring some of their clients to Speakers Social Club helped them meet others and increase their confidence by participating. Since he took on the role of manager three years ago, Alan has been transporting clients to the club each month. The Speakers Social Club program is subsidised to keep the cost of $8 per person affordable, and Alan said the cheque would help this valuable program continue.

Visible numbers save time

Call Carla @ Wirac 9 1212005-DJ51-15

CHECK your house numbers or rural address number are clear. That is the message from the Tenterfield Shire Council and Emergency Services leading up to the Christmas break. “Hidden or non-existent house numbers can waste time, and in an emergency situation every second counts”, Mayor Peter Petty said. The numbers displayed should be visible both day and night and the numbers should be attached to either a letterbox or the yellow Rural Addressing post issued by council.

The NSW Ambulance has asked the community to ensure that house and business numbers are visible both day and night as this can make all the difference with response times of emergencies. They also encourage people to unlock a door and lock up pets, and if possible, have someone wait outside for the ambulance. This will all assist in getting help to you as quickly as possible. A person must not number or display a number in respect to a property unless the number has been allocated to, or approved for use by the council in

relation to the property. If council has allocated a number to a property, the owner or occupier of the property must ensure that the property is marked with the number allocated by the council and the numbers are of sufficient size and free from obstructions so that they can be clearly read under all normal lighting conditions from the road immediately adjacent to the front boundary of the property. For more information on addressing, contact council’s Engineering officer, Jessica Gibbins on (02) 6736 6001.

Dark festival THE Springs 4x4 Park south of Warwick played host to this year’s Dark Forest Festival. The three-day outdoor music experience included nine international acts, more than 20 from interstate and 80 local acts. Dark Forest 2015 is described as an awakening journey through an outdoor music festival experience. Organisers say it is a unique fusion of the darker shades of electronic music, visual production and contagious creative en-

ergy intersecting with an exploration of the boarders between darkness and light. Originally conceived 15 years ago in Victoria as a dark music themed event, it has grown to embrace a broader story of connecting music, arts, culture and community to build awareness and understanding of the importance of communication through music and movement. Photographer Terry West headed out to enjoy the music and snap up the atmosphere.

Centenary March of the Dungarees IN 1915 a group of men set out to join the army and support the war effort. Almost a week ago a group of young men and women aged 13-18 set out to remember the March of the Dungarees. Cadets from the army and air force are nearing the end of their long journey as they arrive at Moggill State School this Friday afternoon before embarking on the final leg to Brisbane’s Anzac Square on Saturday morning. Captain Andrew Craig RAN (Retd), chair of the Queensland Advisory Committee for the Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary, will present all cadets with special Anzac Centenary pins on their last overnight stop at Moggill State School. Arriving into Brisbane city centre on Saturday 19 December, the cadets will complete their 239-kilometre journey to honour the 125 men who enlisted in the March of the Dungarees in 1915. Their eight-day journey from Warwick will culminate this Saturday with the cadets arriving at King George Square around 11.10am, where supporters of all ages are encouraged to march behind the cadets as they travel down Adelaide Street into Anzac Square where the final commemorative plaque presentation will take place. The Honourable Grace Grace MP is expected to attend, along with the families of some cadets. Following the short ceremony, the cadets will relocate back to Moggill State School where they will be reunited with their families and enjoy an informal lunch celebrating their achievement. The 1915 March of Dungarees was a recruitment drive to encourage Australians to enlist in World War I. The 239-kilometre march began in Warwick and travelled via Toowoomba, Laidley and Ipswich, finishing in Brisbane where it had enlisted 125 brave recruits along the way.

Presented to the community.

A fond farewell to flights of ‘Foxtrot’ Casey’s tips

By TANIA PHILLIPS IT was a regular sight over Warwick when it was stationed at Toowoomba but RACQ CareFlight Rescue’s Bell 412 XCF “Foxtrot” helicopter last week made its final flight before its well-earned retirement from the rescue fleet. An icon of the Queensland skies, the chopper joined CareFlight’s operational fleet in 1995 and was the service’s first twin-engine helicopter. Since then, Foxtrot completed 10,768 flight hours saving the lives of people across every corner of southern Queensland. “This particular aircraft has rescued more patients than any other helicopter in CareFlight’s fleet,” CareFlight CEO Ashley van de Velde said. “Manufactured in June 1981, it’s actually the oldest operational helicopter in Australia; its serial number is 31. “Today’s retirement ceremony at our Archerfield Maintenance Facility was a bittersweet moment for the pilots, crewmen and thousands of patients who came to know Foxtrot as a reliable mainstay of the rescue service.” Foxtrot’s retirement is part of CareFlight Group’s fleet renewal program, which commenced this year with the purchase of two new AgustaWestland 139 (AW139) helicopters. It’s the first time in CareFlight’s history that new rather than repurposed aircraft have been purchased, made possible by government funding and ongoing community support. “The retirement of Foxtrot is the

end of an era in our service’s history, but also marks an important milestone in our long-awaited fleet renewal program,” Mr van de Velde said. “This transition will ensure our fleet is equipped with an aviation capability that is more advanced and well positioned for

THE majority of supervised waste facilties across the Southern Downs Regional Council area will be closed on Christmas Day. Southern Downs Regional Council’s Environmental Services manager Tim O’Brien said waste facilities will reopen during normal hours on Boxing Day from 7am. “Most waste facilities will be closed on Christmas Day, re-opening Boxing Day, with the exception of the Killarney Waste Transfer Station, which will remain open during the Christmas period. “Locked waste facilities to which residents have keys will also remain accessible and all JJ Richards waste collection services will carry on as usual with no changes or interruptions. “The household pick-up of general waste and recycling bins is unaffected. “So if your pick up day is a public holiday it will be done that day. “At this time of year there are more bottles, cans and paper, all of which can be recycled, thereby reducing the amount of waste going into landfill. “We wish all of our residents a very merry Christmas and happy new year and encourage everyone to remember recycling during the holiday period,” Mr O’Brien said. Casey’s tips

Diary notes ACCORDING to a diary of note the very first confirmed Christmas was celebrated in the year 352, a note stating that (the earliest possible celebration was in 337). If that is believable Christmas Day 2015 will be the one thousand six hundred and sixty third Christmas Day. Tradition has lasted well and it behoves us all to recognise the true meaning of this day of all days. Songs of Christmas will bring pleasure and church services will be as well attended as ever. However, in this year of a world seemingly at war, Christmas Day 2015 will test the resolve of all of us. Our Australia will remember the true meaning of Christmas and stand shoulder to shoulder together as a mighty army against those who would change us! To all my fellow letter writers and readers the Joy of Christmas and the happiest of New Year 2016. Melba Morris, Allora.

RECENTLY I attended a local school presentation evening, where they (rightfully) played the announced National Anthem, the problem was it was NOT the National Anthem, it was the Australian National Song Advance Australia Fair purporting to be the National Anthem, that is NOT, never has been and never will be the National Anthem, which is, always has been and always will be God Save The Queen. This is entrenched within our Supreme Law, namely the Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth, viz a) Within the Preamble, in part quote “under the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland” end part quote. Note: The Preamble is not a part of the Constitution; it accompanies and binds the Constitution and cannot be altered by referendum. b) Covering clause 3 in part quote, “but the Queen may at any time after the Proclamation, appoint a Governor-General for the Commonwealth” end part quote. c) Covering clause 5, in part quote “under

the Constitution shall be binding on the Courts, Judges and people of every State and of every part of the Commonwealth” end part quote. Note as above for covering clauses. d) Section 1 in part quote “a Federal Parliament, which shall consist of the Queen" end part quote. e) Please read Sections 2, 3 and 4 which are important, but too long to include. f) Section 42 in part quote “Every Senator and every Member of the House of Representatives shall before taking his seat make and subscribe an oath or Affirmation of Allegiance in the form set forth in the schedule to this Constitution” end part quote. Note if they do not do this their seat is vacant and they cannot sit. g) Section 58 in part quote “is presented to the Governor General for the Queen’s Assent, he shall declare according to his discretion, but subject to this Constitution, that he Assents in The Queen’s name, or that he withholds Assent, or that he reserves the law for The Queens Pleasure” end part quote. h) Section 59 in part quote “The Queen may disallow any law within one year from the Governor Generals Assent, shall annul the law from the day when the disallowance is so made known” end part quote i) Please read section 60 as well. j) Section 61 in part quote “The Executive Power of the Commonwealth is vested in the Queen” end part quote. k) Please read Section 64 as well. l) Section 68 quote (in full) “The Command in Chief of the Naval and Military Forces of the Commonwealth is vested in the Governor General as The Queen’s Representative” end quote. m) The Schedule. Note; is also not a part of the Constitution, but always accompanies and is a binding requirement of the Constitution and cannot be changed. Quotes in full. Note A. B is the name of a person. “Oath; I A. B, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her Heirs and successors according to Law so help me God.” “Affirmation; I A. B, do solemnly and sincerely affirm and declare that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her Heirs and successors according to

law.” End quotes. By what in law is called “necessary implication” this also makes God Save The Queen our only unchangeable National Anthem and remains so while ever we remain a Constitutional Monarchy, which we still are. The schools do only as the bureaucrats tell them to do and our children do not learn about our valuable history heritage and Constitution which entrench liberties and freedoms, only selected heritage is taught. In closing, why have we the Australian people allowed this unconstitutional abuse, disrespect and treason against our Honourable Queen Elizabeth II, does anyone have any idea where this mis-education of our young children is leading us and when will we arrive there, I shudder at the realisation of this. God save the Queen! Ian McLeod, Mount Colliery.

Wake in fright PM Malcolm was supposed to come to Toowoomba and attend a luncheon and then turn the sod on the new range crossing. In the aftermath of the McFarlane defection from the Libs to the Nats, Mal took fright and cancelled his Toowoomba visit. No doubt, he of the silken tongue didn’t want to be hassled by the media over Ian’s dumping of the Libs. This isn’t a good look for PM Mal and his ‘leadership’ model. He should have been courageous enough to confront the good folks of Toowoomba and not run like a scalded cat. Leaders need to be seen to be leaders and not sooks who don’t have the courage to confront the issues, no matter how unpalatable they might be. We also find Mal vacillating over the Mal Brough affair. As soon as it came to light that Brough had acted improperly the PM should have stood Brough aside until investigations into the matter were concluded. A real leader has to make tough decisions without fear or favour of the “old mates” network. Mr Turnbull, we will remember you, come election time. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

Remy takes his shot By JOYCE MARSH, WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT WOODENBONG archer Remy Leonard has taken out the Queensland State series. Competing in the 3D National Championships held at Murrurundi recently, Remy won the Youth Male Release 15-17 division as well as the Queensland State Series. He was also named ‘Shooter Of The

Year’ for the same division for the third consecutive year. Winning ‘Shooter Of The Year’ three years in a row entitles Remy to gain partial funding by 3DAAA to fund his trip to compete in the IBO World Championship in Pennsylvania in August next year. Remy was also presented with a trophy for the 3D Indoor Nationals that were held in July where he set a new national record.

At the 3D National Championships younger sister Tabitha, already following in Remy’s footsteps, came second in the Cub Female division and also won the Queensland State Series for her division this year. At the Woodenbong Community Christmas Party, Remy drew the winner of the fabulous $300 value petrol cards raffle the family had been running and the winner was Matt Sellers of Ballina,

and second prize was a Frostbite Chest Cooler and the winner was Tyler Haud of Brisbane. To assure his trip to Turkey and to realise his dreams, Remy is looking for sponsorship and donations. A VERY special event was held recently when RSL Women’s Auxiliary members from all over New South Wales, including representatives from Urbenville, were guests of their patron Linda Hurley at Government House in Sydney. The afternoon tea, hosted by Mrs Hurley and organised by Central Council Woman Auxiliary Deputy State President Pauline James, was a unique one-off event to pay tribute to hard-working members which was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC, although not expected to attend, was a surprise guest. The RSL Women’s Auxiliary in the NSW North Coast fundraise to support RSL Defence Care for returned service personnel. Auxiliaries are the fundraising arm of the Return and Services League and raise money by helping to sell Anzac Day items, Remembrance Day poppies, having street stalls, running Bingo games, and holding raffles. Anyone who would like to join these ladies to help returned service personnel can contact the North Coast State Councillor Mavis Goodlad on 0428 564 897. “My ‘ladies’, as I call them, are hard-working people who think of others who may need help,” Mavis said. “They raise funds all year to help those who need help. “I am very proud of them all.”

What’s On Carols take centre stage WARWICK Community Theatre performed A Christmas Carol as its first on-stage production. Music was provided by the Warwick Community Orchestra and the voices of the East Street Choir. Photographer Terry West was on-hand to capture the theatre-goers on Friday night!

The performance of A Christmas Carol was a mum and daughter outing for Marge Burley and Lynne Stewart.

Oscar and Thomas Pohlman are excited about seeing the play.

The East Street Singers provided the voices for the play.

Helping out on Friday night were Leanne Olson with Robert and Jacinta Fromm.

South of Stanthorpe, the Sundown National Park is a firm favourite of 4x4 enthusiasts. The area has a harsh natural beauty bisected by the Severn River with its steep gorges, gullies and razor backed ridges. Look out for two distinctive attractions, Red Rock Gorge and Rats Castle. For bushwalking and a dip in a cool mountain stream, the local tourism board suggests a visit to Girraween National Park. Renowned for the striking granite outcrops, precariously balanced boulders and beautiful flora, the park has good camping areas and facilities. East of Warwick lies the Spicer’s Gap Road. Although no longer a through road for motor vehicles, visitors can access Governor’s Chair lookout

point with relative ease - albeit an unsealed road and slightly bumpy climb, the view is the reward. A 1.6km section of the road west of Governor’s Chair has been closed to traffic to preserve unique examples of 19th Century road building techniques. This section of the road, known as Spicer’s Gap Conservation Park, can be accessed on foot or by horse, and interpretive signs are located at key points to explain historical features. During the Summer on the Southern Downs Campaign, visitors to the region can benefit from low rates and special offers usually associated with this time of year. Contact one of the visitor information centres for a full list of offers or keep an eye on the Destination Southern Downs Facebook page for promotions. Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre is located at 28 Leslie Parade and could be contacted on 07 46812057. Warwick Visitor Information Centre is at 49 Albion Street and could be contacted on 07 4661 3122.

HOLIDAY time on the Southern Downs can mean getting back to nature, according to Destination Southern Downs, the region’s peak tourism body. Crossing the Condamine River, bushwalking in Girraween National Park and hair raising 4x4 routes in Sundown National Park are some of the interesting opportunities. The Southern Downs is home to the source of the Condamine River, which boasts a lengthy 657km before it meets the Balonne River as part of the Murray-Darling Basin system. The headwaters of the river rise right here on the Southern Downs on the slopes of Mount Superbus, South East Queensland’s highest peak. A great view of the peak is available on Spring Creek Road at Carr’s Lookout. The 14 River Crossings of the Condamine River, in Cambanoora Gorge is one of the most popular 4x4 activities in the region. Depending on rainfall and the rise of the river, the route is accessible by most high-set 4x4 vehicles. After significant rainfall, some of the crossings do however become impassable and it is wise to check route conditions with Main Range National Park before attempting the route. Aptly named, this route crosses the river 14 times as it snakes its way towards the towns of Killarney and Warwick before heading out on its journey to Balonne. The Visitor Information Centre in Warwick carries a handy creek-by-creek route guide with the names of each crossing and spots to have a picnic or a swim.

Having a night out at the performance of A Christmas Carol were David, Eliza, Aiden, Morgan and Laura O'Leary.

★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 This is a favourable week for buying, selling and investing. Tensions in a relationship ease, with the prospect of a contract signing by Thursday. The job situation improves. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 This week finds you sharing the limelight with a surprise personality. Be prepared to update some of your favourite ideas. Resist do-it-yourself projects, especially mechanical ones on the weekend. GEMINI—May 23-June 21

Connecting people and communities SFT

Storming through PHOTOGRAPHER Terry West specialises in storm and weather photos, so when the storm blew through on Friday night, he couldn’t resist snapping a few photos. And as usual he has captured some pretty spectactular images.

If planning to relocate, you could run into a temporary snag. Use the week to chase up debts. A domestic stalemate ends by the weekend. CANCER—June 22-July 22 You can count on loved ones to be supportive, though in a quiet way. A home improvement project could grind to a halt on the weekend. It may appear that work efforts may not be appreciated but don’t jump to conclusions. LEO—July 23-August 22 Spend more time listening to and encouraging children. There is a financial theme to the week, so it could be a great time to launch a business venture. Make the weekend an athletic time. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 A companion surprises you with his/hers wide range of talents while you benefit from narrowing your range of interests. Loyalties are proven and you can sleep a little easier now. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 A conservative approach is favoured in relationships and at the workplace. A neighbourhood project is more exciting than you might think. A conflict with a relative ends by the weekend. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 You have more fun being a spectator than a participant in your week’s varied activities. You could be working overtime to solve a family problem, but it pays off by Friday. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 News is buzzing all about you, but don’t take it too seriously. The light touch is stressed all week despite new hastles at work. An older relative supports your ideas. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Communications improve and while you and a loved one may not see eye to eye, you do understand and respect the other viewpoint. Avoid informal transactions and be alert to investments involving land. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 A money making opportunity could open up this week and travel is mixed with romance. Prepare for many types of delays on the weekend and watch out for rivals at the workplace after the weekend. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Your ego receives a boost by Friday, thanks to gestures by friends and superiors. Inspiration strikes at the oddest moments, so keep pad and pencil at hand wherever you may be. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You have a great capacity for love - of all humanity, yet sometimes you worry too much about your personal security. The creative approach can be the profitable one especially in your career. A long range goal comes into view.

Checking weather you’re prepared IF severe weather left you isolated on your property or needing to evacuate, would you be prepared? This storm season the State Emergency Service (SES) is reminding all Queenslanders to have an emergency plan and emergency kit stocked and ready to go. SES Assistant Commissioner Peter Jeffrey said all residents should have an emergency kit prepared and know exactly what actions they would take in an emergency. “Your emergency plan should take into account all members of the household, including pets, and should detail what actions you would take if severe weather of

flash flooding affected your area” Mr Jeffrey said. “We are encouraging all residents to stop and think about their plan now, so they know what they would do if a disaster struck. For instance, where would you go if you needed to evacuate? What would you do if you couldn’t get to your destination due to a sudden weather event? Do you have a back-up plan for collecting children from school? “These are the questions and situations people should consider when developing their emergency plan. Importantly, they need to discuss it with all household members, to ensure everyone knows the plan

in advance.” Mr Jeffrey said natural disasters rarely gave much warning, so it was important for every household to prepare. “We cannot prevent severe weather, but we can prepare our homes and families to take action when it does strike,” he said. “Having an emergency plan is an important step to prepare for, survive and cope with emergencies.” Mr Jeffrey said an emergency kit should be stocked now, and include essential items to survive in isolation for three days. “Think about what you would

need if you had to last three days without power and clean water,” he said. “Make sure you have enough water and non-perishable food stocked in a water-proof emergency kit. Include medication, as well as nappies if required and a first-aid kit. “You may want to keep copies of important documents in your emergency kit, as well as a list of handy contact numbers. A torch, batteries and portable radio to stay tuned into warnings are all essential in your kit. “We want all Queenslanders to prepare now, so they don’t get caught out.”

Maths well dished out to cookers By TANIA PHILLIPS MATHS can seem like a dry, intellectual subject with no practical purpose, but not so says John Muehlebach, maths teacher at The School of Total Education in Warwick. And to prove his point, during Term four the Year 10 SOTE maths students built a parabolic solar cooker. “Students learnt that parabolas have the special property that causes them to focus energy from the sun to a single point,” he said. “Students were given an assignment in which they needed to calculate the shape and dimensions of a parabolic cooker from a quadratic equation and then build

and test it.” Mrs Collins, the art teacher, then taught the Year 10 art class how to mould plaster into the shape of the parabolic dish. The dish was then pointed to the sun, and before you could calculate a quadratic equation, the students had cooked a fine dish of butter chicken which the whole class enjoyed. “The parabolic dish project had never been attempted before, but ended up as the learning gift that kept on giving, with every step revealing yet another application of a mathematical concept and simultaneously stimulating the students’ interest and curiosity” Mr Muehlebach said.

Boxing Test no seasonal treat The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

NORMALLY at this time of the year as we get serious about the countdown to the visit of the man in the red suit, sports lovers lick their lips in anticipation of the Boxing Day Test. It is one of those iconic days in the Australian sporting calendar where you know if you can’t be there you will be well entertained in front of the TV as like a carpet snake you recover from the indulgences of the previous day and relax with a cooling ale. However, after the performance of the West Indies in Tasmania it might just be more entertaining to slip outside and watch the lawn grow. Test cricket seems to almost be ready for the last rites in the Caribbean if the performance we witnessed is any yardstick. I believe all cricket lovers were hoping against hope that we would see a resurgence of the Caribbean entertainers. Unfortunately that was far from the case. Not sure what crowd numbers will be flocking to the MCG this year. I might just have to be brushing up on sailing and take a keen interest in the Sydney to Hobart in between channel surfing to watch wickets fall or the Australians post another “cricket score”. However you have chosen to spend your Christmas this year I hope you and yours have a happy and safe holiday season. Team Spin thank our contributors throughout the year and our readers. I hope Santa is kind to you all and 2016 brings us another great year of sport. We will be back in the New Year - keep an eye out for our wrap up of 2015. Merry Christmas - Casey RSL BACK ON TOP UNDER uncertain skies last Saturday RSL defeated Tenterfield in what was perhaps a closer game than some expected. The Tenterfield side was bolstered by the return of Alan Donges and he was a stand out in the visitors’ bowling attack as RSL were dismissed in the 38th over, posting a target of 151 for their opponents. Jason Lawer (24) top scored for the competition front runners. The total of 151 could have been far more gettable if the Tenterfield bowling attack had been tighter. There was a total of 42 extras including 14 no balls and 25 wides. Tenterfield took the game to RSL in their innings as Fowler top scored with 33. The RSL bowling attack however proved too strong and the visitors were dismissed for 37 runs shy of their target in the 34th over. David Becker finished the game with four wickets for only 19 runs for RSL and was well supported by Ross Lupton and Josh Wren. The win puts RSL back at the top of the premiership table and they are

Senior winners from left, Quentin Chapman, Tom Donald and Richard Roese.

Batsman safely home in the Valley Souths clash. favourites to take out this season’s premiership. VALLEYS STAKE THEIR CLAIM THE covers came off on the CF White pitch on Saturday night as Souths and Valleys went head to head in a night game where both sides were missing key players. Souths won the toss and elected to bat. The Valleys bowling attack picked up from where it left off last weekend, but despite bowling good line and length could not get an early wicket however they did make scoring runs a tough task. The Souths batsmen slowly built a handy score, and at 4/136 looked to be in a solid position. However faced with some good bowling, Souths lost a steady stream of wickets and finished their innings with 152 on the board. Souths Caleb Hutchins did well to bat the entire innings to finish not out 32. Adam Bonner 38 and Danny Folkers 21 showed good form with the bat. Good bowling performances from Valleys Damian Anderson (2/21), Curtis Allen (3/40) and Anthony Marino (1/18) were a highlight of the innings. The Valleys opening batsmen Curtis Allen (21) and Alistair Middleton (19) showed their intention early in the innings moving the score to 53 in only

the 11th over. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Valleys who suffered the first of two mini collapses, and in the space of two overs were 3/53. Two partnerships progressed the total to 5/117, but a late order collapse saw Valleys slump to 8/128. The experience of Dave Gavin was instrumental in piloting Valleys to a win. Gavin scored 62 runs including four sixes. He was well supported by Kirby Morunga who showed a cool head as Valleys eventually won with eight overs in hand. Souths bowlers Danny Folkers and Tom Furness each took three wickets. This weekend Souths take on Wanderers and Centerfield face another uphill battle when they play Valleys before the Christmas break. INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE PAYS DIVIDENDS STANTHORPE greenkeeper Bill Pyne used his intimate knowledge of the course to the full last Saturday when he won the single stableford competition sponsored by Max Hunter with a score of 42 points. The course has undergone weeks of intensive TLC covering everything from hail damage to grass control. Players can now see the positive results of Bill’s hard work while the man himself is obviously enjoying the fruits of his labour.

Last Saturday’s runner-up was Mick O’Brien with 41 points. It was great to see O’Brien, who has been in the form wilderness for a while, back in form. The ladies’ event was won by Nikki Rossow, her score 39 points. Nikki has been playing in competition events for only a short time since attaining a handicap and showing good consistency in her game. Madeline Jarman celebrated the start of her holiday season with the runner prize with a score of 38 points. Pin shots went to Len Leigh at 3/12 and Kev Rowling at 17. Nikki Rossow took out the ladies approach at 17. Rick Kelly claimed the pro-pin at 1/10, Fred Wharton at 5/14 and Luke Reardon at 9/18. In the run down, a ball each to Dave Williams, Graham Tonkin and Fred Wharton, all with 40 points. Saturday is the last event prior to Christmas, a single stableford sponsored by Stanthorpe Regional Community Bank. Tee off times are from 11.30am and the time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse. With Christmas bearing down on us all like a freight train, the Stanthorpe club is busy preparing to host the annual Boxing Day Classic, a three ball Ambrose sponsored by Michael Hancock, Tony Herman and Wes Smith Building, three names well known in rugby league circles. The event will be a shot gun start and visitors are welcome. A nomination sheet is available at the club.

DAY NIGHT GABBA? WILL the 2016 Gabba Test see a change to the Day / Night Test format? There is a groundswell of support to increase day/night Test cricket next season to two games and the Gabba looks to be the front runner. It has been announced that there will be another round of Sheffield Shield games under lights this season with Queensland having the chance to showcase the Gabba in February. While CA have picked up the Pink ball and run with it this season, talks are currently in progress with the governing bodies in South Africa and Pakistan. Both have publicly confirmed their support of the concept. There has been plenty of behindthe-scenes activity since the Adelaide Test. Ball manufacturers Kookaburra are in on the action and there has been plenty of feedback from players and stakeholders regarding the “pink ball”. On the whole the ball seemed to play better than the naysayers expected. Modifications are set to be made to iron out some difficulties identified, and it is hoped that the new and improved proto type will be available for the recently announced day-night round of shield cricket. Gabba pitch curator Kevin Mitchell will no doubt be keeping a watchful eye on his patch with a view to producing a Test pitch next summer for a Day Night Test against South Africa. Interesting and changing times afoot and Cricket Australia are leading the way.

This weekend muzzle loading and centrefire rifle competitions have been scheduled and pistol practice for those wishing to bang away. BLAIR WILLAIMS WINNERS A 4BBB competition was played last Saturday at Wallangarra. Simon Blair and Scott Williams ran out winners when partners were drawn after the game. Steven Hampstead and Brendan McMillan took out the runners-up spot while eight other players all finished in the prizes. Hampstead was the only player to land a pin, and that was on hole nine. He also landed one of the

approach shots on 14. As we all begin serious preparations for the silly season, the club has scheduled a single stroke competition this Saturday. Remember visitors are always welcome. SPORTERS GOLF THERE was a great roll up for the Sporters Christmas bash last Sunday. Amid all the Christmas cheer there was some golf played. After the wonderful barbecue brekkie, players hit the fairways and greens. Rod Pettiford was seeing that little white ball so well that he came away with a win, outscoring runner-up Mark Lynam. The run-downs went to Mick Doorley and Terry Byrnes. Ian Anderson won

the Best Gross with a cut of the cards. Rod Werner took the pin shot on the 12th and Owen McPaul at 17. The Pro Pin went to Ian Anderson. Craig Pearson and Brendon Hill went home with early Santa presents - a meat tray each as the post-game Christmas frivolity continued. Sporters will tee-off between 8-8.30am this Sunday. Sporters will take a Christmas break on Sunday 27 December but will be back to normal for the New Year on Sunday 3 January. There is an early date for Sporters’ 2016 diaries - Apple and Grape YA entrant Rhiannon McPaul will be holding a fund-raising Golf Day on Sunday. There will be a time sheet in the clubhouse for that day shortly. MALLETERS WRAP UP YEAR AS the year draws to a close, several association croquet players were unavailable last week due to heavy commitments however there were some good games played. Margaret Dickenson and Grace Howard defeated Carol Verwey and Val Shephard 21-18. Jenny Tunbridge played well against Joy

Four close games were played and while the red team won three of the four, competition was tight. Gateballers will not return now until 15 January when they will begin preparation for several tournaments after their successful foray in competition recently.
