V/Line angst By ANEEKA SIMONIS SENIORS are getting behind a campaign to overturn V/Line service changes affecting Pakenham commuters. Valerie and Michael West from Cardinia Waters Retirement Village recently issued petitions to the doorstep of residents in their neighbourhood, inviting them to pressure the government to reverse recent public transport changes barring Pakenham residents from boarding V/Line trains. Ms West flagged major concerns surrounding safety and amenities restrictions on metro trains which rule out future trips to the city on public transport. “It’s partly about safety. We are all retirement age and feel safer on the V/Line where there is a conductor on board,” she said. She also highlighted residents’ concerns with the lack of toilet facilities on board metro trains which take more than an hour to get to the city from Pakenham. “It’s a long time to sit on the train ... it’s nice knowing (toilets) are there,” Ms West said. Ms West delivered the petition to more than 300 residents in the village last week with the support of Bass MP Brian Paynter. The petitions are due to be collected and submitted to parliament during an upcoming sitting. From Sunday 21 June, V/ Line trains heading into the

The changes will be enforced by $217 fines at the start of next year. Ms West said she hopes the government reverses the decision, suggesting she would pay more to take V/Line trains into the city. “I would be quite happy to pay more to be able to travel on the V/Line,” she said. According to State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, the controversial changes will be overturned if he is elected in 2018. Public Transport Victoria statistics indicate that about 300 passengers boarded inbound V/line trains at Pakenham on a typical weekday in October 2014.

It was a mixture of elation and relief for ROC netballers Grace George, Maddison Chamberlain, Jenna Trewarn and Kelly Cousins, who took out the premiership in the SEFNL Under 13 Red Division last Saturday, 19 September. Scores between ROC and Doveton were equal at three-quarter-time before a five-goal haul from goal attack Grace George pushed ROC towards a 26-22 victory.
