PAKENHAM mum Stacey Kumar hopes people stared at the group of walkers, many dressed as Spiderman, striding around Lakeside on Saturday morning. “It’s about raising awareness,” Stacey said. “We want everyone to know his name and know his face.” Stacey was talking about threeyear-old William Tyrrell who went missing from his grandmother’s backyard in Kendall, NSW, last September. Despite a huge police investigation, what happened to the youngster is still a mystery. About 80 Walks for William were held around the country on the weekend, all starting at 10.30am, the time William’s mum reported him missing. Organisers aimed to raise awareness of William’s plight and ultimately help bring him home. William was wearing a Spiderman suit when he went missing, prompting walkers to wear Spiderman apparel or red and blue clothing as they walked. Mum to Braxton, Stacey said the cause was one she felt compelled to support. “I just think it’s horrifying that this could happen. It makes you want to do anything you can to help,” she said. “I put myself in the shoes of his parents and I just can’t imagine how difficult it would be.” After finding that there was no walk organised for Pakenham, Stacey decided to host her own. With about 40 friends, family and community members in attendance, the group were hard not to notice.
An opportunity to catch up with friends while raising awareness, Stacey said the day had certainly served its purpose. “It’s not just about William - it’s about every missing child and about making sure things like this don’t happen. “It’s good to get out there, go for a walk and raise awareness at the same time.” In Narre Warren Goodstart Early Learning Centre director Kylie Bartlett led a similar walk. Balloons were released into the heavens as a mark of respect for William and his family. “I think everyone was warmed by it, we were doing it for William but not just for William, we’re not going to give up,” “We were coming together as a community whether we know him or not.” As the manager of a childcare centre, Kylie said William’s disappearance had had a profound effect on the team at Goodstart and the local parents. “I think that’s what hits home, I don’t have children myself, but as the centre director I look at all these children as my own,” she said. “The thought of any child going missing hits home for everyone, it just shows, the world’s a bad place.” The Walk for William events, organised by Bravehearts, has seen a surge in calls to Crime Stoppers in relation to William’s disappearance, with more than 300 people contacting police over the last week with potential tip-offs.
