■ No bail for ice user who allegedly stalked ex-partner...

‘Orders breached’

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A 21-YEAR-OLD Pakenham ice user has been arrested on his way to rehab after his alleged persistent breaching of a family violence intervention order, a court was told.

The unemployed man was accused of stalking and harassment of his ex-partner less than two days after receiving CREDIT bail on 24 similar charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 August.

He was arrested in Pakenham and faced magistrate Jack Vandersteen for a second time in a week on Monday (31 August).

“I made it very clear to him what would happen to him if he breached the orders (while on bail),” Mr Vandersteen said.

After the magistrate rejected the man’s bail application on Monday, the man appeared pale and unsteady on his feet.

Mr Vandersteen asked him: “Are you feeling well at the moment?”

“No,” the man replied.

Constable Ross Williams, of Cardinia Family Violence Unit, told the court that the man knocked and tried to open the front door of his ex-partner’s Pakenham house at 1.30am on 29 August.

From indoors, the victim allegedly saw the man using his mobile phone, then received seven ‘private number’ missed calls.

On the eighth call, she answered the phone.

She identified the laughing caller as the accused, but

couldn’t decipher his speech.

When police attended, there was no sign of the accused though they found his sister’s vehicle parked in the street and a copy of a letter given to the accused by the victim.

In arguing for bail, defence lawyer Nadine Daniel said the accused attended his one CREDIT bail appointment last week, and did not admit to the most recent charges.

The man, who had drug and mental health issues, was set to start a one-month stay at a southern Melbourne rehab centre that day, Ms Daniel said.

The centre was supervised 24/7, secured with locked doors, windows and CCTV - and never had an absconder, the court was told.

The father, who is also a teacher, said he had wished to have his son immediately put into rehab after last week’s bail hearing.

He said the man was arrested just as they were leaving to drop him off at rehab.

The man had been previously convicted for breaching intervention orders against the same ex-partner in 2014 and 2015.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the man posed an unacceptable risk to the complainant’s safety.

“The complainant’s view is she’s scared for her own safety and there’s been a persistence by you in (breaching).

“There’s no suggestion that it’s drug abuse. It’s an issue of behaviour where you’re not complying with court orders.”

On 26 August, the board banned track assistant manager Lawrence Cunningham for life - the fifth trainer connected to the track’s live-baiting scandal to receive such a ban.

Greyhound Racing Victoria stated a further 11 related cases will be heard by the board by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the State Government is set to introduce tougher animal-cruelty bills into parliament this week.

Under the proposed laws, financial penalties for luring, baiting and blooding will be doubled to up to $75,835 or up to two years’ imprisonment - which is in line with the maximum penalty for aggravated cruelty.

Trainer banned over live baiting AN ASSISTANT manager at the suspended Tooradin Trial Track has been disqualified from greyhound racing for life.

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board banned Lawrence Cunningham after finding him guilty of 17 charges of alleged live baiting at the track.

Mr Cunningham of Pakenham did not contest the charges or turn up to the hearing at the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board in West Melbourne on 26 August.

Cunningham allegedly used a live rabbit on a leash to excite a greyhound and attached a live rabbit or piglet to the track’s

lure arm for luring several dogs on 23 December and 15 January.

The board, after viewing video footage of the offences, found Mr Cunningham’s conduct warranted a “much more severe” penalty than the 10year disqualification which is laid out by the industry’s animal welfare penalty guidelines.

“His conduct involved active participation in multiple breaches of the rules carried out in what appeared to be a practised and experienced manner and included the gravest of these types of offences,” the board stated.

“He was an employee at the

Tooradin Trial Track at the relevant times and clearly knew what he was doing.”

There were no mitigating factors, the board stated.

Cunningham is the fifth trainer to be permanently banned over the scandal, with a further 11 related cases to be heard.

Last month the track’s manager Stuart Mills was also handed a lifelong disqualification by the board.

The track has been closed since the scandal, which alleged that live piglets, possums and rabbits were used to excite and lure greyhounds, broke in February.

HEAVY flooding in Officer made for hazardous driving conditions last week, according to a local emergency service group which were called out to help motorists attempting to drive in the harsh weather.

According to the Pakenham SES, a number of residents called for emergency assistance during the continual heavy rain that hit parts of Cardinia Shire on Thursday 27 August.

The worst of the rain hit Station Street in Officer, submerging part of at least one car and contributing to the crash of a separate vehicle.

Pakenham SES media officer Shayne Honey said keeping lives and property safe was the SES’ main concern, reiterating the dangers of motorists travelling through floodwaters.

“If out on the car and you notice flooding - do not attempt

According to Mr Honey, a truck driver ignored a road block set up in the heavy flood water region in Officer before crashing into an open drain.

the emergency unit supplying a number of sandbags to residents in the Pakenham and Officer areas.

EIGHT greyhounds have been surrendered from a property during joint RSPCA Victoria and police raids in Melbourne’s south-east last week.

In a statement, the RSPCA stated 14 warrants were executed over eight days as part of a greyhound racing live-baiting investigation.

RSPCA inspectors, supported by Casey police, seized computers, mobile phones, documents and clothing during the raids.

The surrendered greyhounds are being cared for by the RSPCA, with the “ultimate goal of finding them loving homes”, a spokeswoman said.

The RSPCA stated it expects its investigation would conclude soon.

It began after alleged livebaiting at Tooradin Trial Track was uncovered in February.

The track has since been closed; its manager Stuart Mills banned for life by the indepen-

BERWICK’S Fiona Dowdell will walk more than 1100 kilometres for her grandson.

Her grandson Tristan was recently diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia and may be the youngest person to be diagnosed at four years old.

Now five, Tristan’s life expectancy has been cut short.

It is a fatal genetic disease that affects thousands of people world-wide.

Tristan is expected to experience complete incapacitation through loss of vision, hearing, scoliosis and eventual cardiac failure.

Tristan’s mother Natalie said despite how exhausting and uncomfortable things could get for him, he never complained.

“He is social, intelligent and a delightful boy,” she said.

“After his own realisation that he won’t be able to play football, he has decided that he wants to coach, and to join a chess club.

“Instead of putting on the latest sneakers, he lets me put on leg braces.”

Both Natalie and Fiona said that their lives had changed since the diagnosis.

“Every afternoon (seven times a week) he has speech therapy and occupational therapy,” Natalie said.

Tristan also has a list of more than 15 specialists he visits.

“He’s honestly such a kind little boy,” Fiona said.

“He’ll lose his vision, hearing and speech, but still be mentally aware.

“His life already has so many specialist and hospital visits.”

Fiona’s walk will begin at the Sydney Opera House and end at Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Her goal is to raise money for research into Friedreich’s ataxia and awareness along the way.

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SEVEN years after he threw THAT party, Corey Worthington says he has no regrets.

After all, the now 24-year-old is still getting publicity from throwing the outof-control party at his parents’ Narre Warren home in 2008, where more than 500 people turned up after the invitation went viral on Myspace.

And the notorious party boy is set for a walk down the aisle in November - having finally been tamed by Melissa, who he met through friends and has known for five or six years.

On top of that, Corey currently features in a Father’s Day advertisement for the online gift retailer Red Balloon, where he buys his dad a biplane ride to atone for his past indiscretions - under the tagline ‘Clean the Slate’.

“Why would you regret it? I was 16, it was fun,” Corey told Star News.

“Any 16-year-old - I say it to anyone - if you’ve got cameras chucked in your face, people throwing money, getting to go overseas, getting to go around Australia, getting to meet famous people. Why not? Why wouldn’t you do it?

“Getting to go on Big Brother, for throwing one simple party, it just went ’boom’.

“I enjoyed it and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.”

And while Corey, who works fulltime as a concreter and still lives locally, admitted he wished his parents hadn’t been dragged into the media spotlight along with him, it seems time really does heal all wounds.

Even for Corey, with his Dad set to be best man at his wedding in November.

“It took a little bit for them to get over what happened but they knew I was 16 and that I didn’t mean for it to get out of hand but they knew like ... look what came out of it,” he said.

Briefly Magid Drive all-in-brawl POLICE are investigating an all-in-brawl in Narre Warren on the weekend which involved up to 20 people.

Police attended Magid Drive after 4pm on Sunday 30 August where a fight between 15 to 20 people was allegedly unfolding.

No one has been charged following the incident but police are currently looking through CCTV footage in relation to the investigation.

A silver Commodore was seen in the area at the time.

Corey made international headlines after throwing the unchaperoned party, notorious for how quickly it spiralled out of hand.

And his notoriety continued following the A Current Affair interview where he refused to take off his iconic sunglasses.

But with no sunnies over his eyes, and

a wedding on the horizon, Corey says he’s matured and appreciated the path his life had taken.

“What can you say? I don’t know, it was weird. It made international news and it still does make news seven years on,” he said.

“It’s good I guess, I do enjoy it. I’m a lot older so I can handle things a lot better as well.

“Back then some of the things I was meant to do, I sort of didn’t want to do it.

I was a lot younger but now I see it more with a business mind.”

“I never thought it would reach that level but once it did, you’ve gotta roll with it,” he said.

“If you try to fight it, it could have gotten a lot worse.

“You just had to roll with it and just see what happens after and I did and look - it’s seven years on and I’m still getting interviews and people coming and talking about the party I did when I was 16.”

POLICE and CFA crews are investigating a suspicious fire in Berwick which caused significant damage to a storm water drain.

The fire was reported about 2am on Monday 31 August in Berwick Retreat where an unknown object was set on fire and the accelerant then spread into the water drain.

A silver car was seen in the area at the time.

Fab rehab THE new City of Casey rehab hospital at the rear of the general hospital is a place of which all Casey residents should be proud.

I spent some time there recently recovering from surgery.

The hospital has 30 beds, two rooms with two beds and 26 single bed rooms.

The bedrooms are all good size rooms with shower, toilet, safety rails and alarms.

It has a large gym, a dining room and several small lounges.

It is a public hospital with all the facilities of a private hospital.

No one could complain about the choice of meals.

The nurses and staff could not be more helpful and at your beck and call at all times.

A hospital second to none. I congratulate the City of Casey.

Cr Morland said the council was delighted to provide three new exhibition spaces to complement the popular Civic Centre Art Space in Narre Warren, providing more opportunities to showcase talented local artists to the community.

THE former First Lady of East Timor made a special visit to the City of Casey last month to speak to the Friends of Ermera and the local community.

Melbourne-born Kirsty Sword Gusmao, who was married to the former President and Prime Minister of East Timor Xanana Gusmao for 15 years, was the guest of honour at the special presentation held on 14 August at the Narre Warren council chambers and hosted by Casey Mayoress Kay Morland.

Ms Gusmao, who was recently awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in acknowledgement of her many years fighting for East Timor’s independence, told guests she had been “struck” by how the focus of the Friends of Ermera aligned “almost perfectly” with the work of the Alola Foundation.

Ms Gusmao set up the foundation in 2001 to raise awareness of the widespread sexual violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste during militia attacks in 1999.

“Education underpins every single development challenge that Timor-Leste faces today,” Ms Gusmao said.

“And girls’ education is, I believe, of fundamental importance to the future prosperity and well-being of the East Timorese people.

“As the saying goes, “when you educate a man, you educate a man, but when you educate a woman, you educate an entire community.

Gusmao said.

“I myself have had the privilege of working over the past 12 months with the team within the Ministry of Education charged with developing a new primary curriculum and related resources.”

Friends of Ermera member Jan Tresize congratulated Ms Gusmao for being “an inspiration to the people of Timor Leste and to many in the international community who are supporting the Timorese to build their new nation.”

TWO local community members were honoured as joint winners of the 2015 Lindsay King Arts Award last week.

Gregory Marks and Revati Ilanko were named the shared recipients of Casey’s highest individual honour for the arts at the annual Mayoral Arts Dinner, held on Friday 28 August, at the Casey Civic Centre.

Casey mayor Mick Morland congratulated the winners, who he said had gone above and beyond to help develop, support and promote the arts in Casey.

“The Lindsay King Arts Award is Casey’s most prestigious arts award and both Gregory and Revati are worthy recipients given their passion and dedication to creating opportunities for the community to get involved in and enjoy the arts,” Cr Morland said.

“The council thanks them both for their contribution to

the arts locally and the many others who devote their time to all forms of art here in Casey.

“Casey is home to a thriving arts scene and the Mayoral Arts Dinner is the council’s opportunity to celebrate the strength of our arts community, as well as the success of the council’s three-month long Winter Arts Festival, which wraps up at the end of August.”

Gregory Marks is the current director of the Casey Concert Band and has committed more than 50 years to the arts.

He has taken the band’s membership from eight musicians to 40 and through his dedication and expertise has led the group to become a major contributor to the arts in Casey.

He has also assisted in raising more than $10,000 for Berwick Primary School which enabled them to expand their music department.

Revati Ilanko is the owner of the Indian dance academy, Navaratna Arts, and is the executive officer at the Federation of Indian Origin Multi-Faith Organisation (FIMO) - a non-profit peak body bringing people from multiple faiths together.

Revati has been instrumental in bringing together the Indian and Sri Lankan communities in Casey by supporting and tailoring events that appeal to everybody.

She is a former member of the council’s Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee.

Established in 2007, the Lindsay King Arts Award was named in memory of a Cranbourne resident whose vigorous commitment to the arts and passion for local history, tourism and culture made a significant impact on the Casey community.

Intruder fear

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A BERWICK mother says she feared for her children’s safety after a terrifying burglary in which thieves entered the family’s home while everyone was asleep.

The offenders entered the Ridgemont Drive house about 4.30am on Sunday 30 August through a back sliding window and stole three iPads, three phones, a Fitbit and a laptop before fleeing the property.

The offenders were allegedly spotted by a neighbour driving off from the house in a car believed to have been stolen from another Berwick home the night before.

The thieves entered this house, in Whistler Drive, just after 2am on Saturday 29 August and from inside took keys to a Holden stationwagon which they stole from the house.

Jacqui Fox, who lives at the

Ridgemont Drive property, said her family - including her two young sons - had been left completely shaken by the ordeal.

“It’s more the fact they came into the house and invaded our privacy and our children were asleep - what if one of the children had got up and heard them? That’s what’s frightening,” she said.

“We’re insured, so the stolen items aren’t the biggest problem, the fact is we can’t feel safe in our own home.”

These incidents follow an increasing spate of home burglaries in Casey in the last few months in which thieves break into houses overnight, many times through unlocked doors, and go on to ransack the home, often stealing cars.

Last month Star News spoke to David Linton, of Berwick, who bought his 18-year-old daughter a Holden Commodore

for doing well at school.

But less than a month before sitting for her licence, thieves broke into his Findon Way house through the unlocked front door and stole her car.

On 29 July, thieves broke into a Cranbourne North home in Paratea Lane in the middle of the day and took car keys which they used to steal a Kia Sportage.

The car was found burnt-out in parkland in Narre Warren two days later.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin urged residents to ensure their house and car doors were locked, warning that keys and cars were being stolen from Casey homes at an alarming rate.

GP Run to lend a helping hand

The City of Casey’s Cranbourne GP Run is the biggest annual event for the municipality, and will run this year on Saturday 17 October.

The celebrity guest for the GP Run is Eddie Perfect, who chose the ASRC as the charity partner and is a strong supporter of the organisation.

City of Casey mayor Mick Morland said the council was thrilled to be able to partner with this great organisation for Casey’s biggest annual event.

“Thousands of people flock to Cranbourne each year for the GP Run and the council looks forward to welcoming ASRC on board this year to help raise their profile in the community and much-needed funds to continue their vital work,” Cr Morland said.

Along with the school’s book character parade held on Friday 28 August, the school engaged students with reading activities throughout the week.

Books shortlisted for the Children’s Book of the Year Award were read in all

MATT’S OUR MAN ON THE LAND STOCKDALE and Leggo sales consultant Matt Leek is a passionate man.

He loves what he does - which is just as well because Matt isn’t your average real estate agent.

In fact Matt juggles not one job like most of us - but two.

Through the day, since 2011, Matt has worked hard to sell houses and property around the Pakenham area but even before he gets in to the office he’s already done a day’s work.

You see Matt Leek is also a wellknown horse trainer.

“I actually did my training with Stockdale and Leggo as soon as I left school,” he said.

“But my passion for horses kept

me busy there for a while. I’ve been training horses for seven years.”

But real estate called him too, and so four years ago he started juggling the two careers - and it seems it’s a very successful venture.

“I’m still training - we had a winner at Pakenham the other day,” he said.

“My partner Jenna and I get up fairly early each day - 4.30am to work the horses and then we go off to our jobs.”

He said while it was a long day, “it’s worth it”.

“I love the horses but I think doing both works well for me,” he said.

While he deals with all facets of

the real estate market, he said being a horse trainer probably gave him a special empathy for the rural sector.

“I get to meet a lot of people in the racing community and I think that helps,” he said.

The main thing he enjoys about real estate?

“Satisfying the client,” he said.

“I just sold a unit in Kent Street in Warragul, an elderly couple taking on their daughter’s children - being able to help them was the biggest buzz for me.”

Healthy minds

TEACHERS at Tooradin Primary School were proud as punch with their students’ energy and confidence at the school’s talent quest.

Students got up in front of their parents, friends and teachers to show off their entertainment acts on Friday 28 August.

The school’s Katie Neidhart said the students did an amazing job.

“We were entertained by a variety of acts including singing, dancing, comedy and an amazing pianist,” she said.

TOTAL Fitness Day is coming to Narre Warren on 11 October.

Nik Kyriacou, of NRGETIC Lifestyle and Fitness, is running a fund-raiser for headspace Narre Warren focusing on increasing awareness about the impacts of a healthy lifestyle on mental health.

It comes at a time where one in four young people aged 16-24 will experience a mental health or substance use disorder in any given year in Australia.

Suicide is also the highest cause of death in 20 to 24-yearolds.

The day will feature local businesses and organisations promoting healthy products and lifestyles and aim to raise money to support the Narre Warren

headspace centre that launched in May. “Our aim for the day is to get awareness out to the local community of the importance of maintaining a fit, healthy and happy lifestyle for all ages to prevent illnesses impacting mental health,” she said.

Nik hopes that putting a range of options together in an inviting event, it will inspire people to become more active.

“It’s to help Casey and Cardinia live more active, happy lifestyles,” she said.

“There’s a lot out there, they don’t know where to look or they just don’t.

“I’m hoping putting it in front of them, it makes it easier.”

Stalls on the day will include

Casey Scorpions running football drills, Chobani Yogurt, dieticians, naturopaths, personal trainers, alternative therapies, health foods, travel consultants, beauty stalls, lifestyle activities and kids’ activities.

“There’s a lot of kids I see going through things like the ice epidemic, it scares me a bit,” she said.

“It’s something that doesn’t need to happen - if they had more interests and hobbies it may help.”

She chose headspace Narre Warren because they’re local.

“I wanted someone close and connected to the community,” she said.

Total Fitness Day will complete Mental Health Week in October and will be held at the Oakgrove Community Centre.

Police get set to crack concrete scam GOODS worth $53,500 were stolen from an equipment hire company in Berwick last month.

Police said a man phoned the store about 10.20am on Monday 17 August and ordered concrete cutting and drilling items.

He asked for the items to be delivered to an address in Enterprise Avenue, Berwick, and for the amount to be charged to a maintenance business.

The delivered items were subsequently taken from that address and the business that was billed for the items told police that it did not place the order.

Police have released a face image of a man they believe can assist with their inquiries.

They said the image is a 60 to 70 per cent likeness of the man and that he has very few teeth.

Beaconsfield brothers Blayne, Tyson and Chayse Bertoncello opened their restaurant ‘O.My’ two years ago and haven’t looked back.

Degustation is a style of dining which focuses on sampling a variety of small and specialised dishes.

The brothers pride themselves on using fresh ingredients to create unique tastes.

Coming off the back of two recent major awards, Tyson Bertoncello said the experience had been popular among diners from across Melbourne.

“When we first started up, people were walking in and saying ‘I just want a steak.’ All we were doing at the start was just trying to get people in the door,” he said.

“Now we’re finding that guests are embracing the food and really appreciating the dining experience.”

He said that the restaurant’s Beaconsfield location was a real asset.

Federal Small Business Minister Bruce Billson on Thursday 27 August toured Bar Crusher Boats in Dandenong South with Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) members.

The recreational boating industry supplier’s managing director Peter Cleland said Mr Billson wanted to look at small to medium enterprises that were growing.

“With the pressure on the automotive industry, he’s looking to get a feel for what industries might be growth opportunities,” he said.

“We’ve got a good growth story.

“It’s great for our staff and us to have somebody like the federal small business minister visiting our premises.

“It demonstrates that we’re

climbing the opportunity ladder.”

The family-owned business has been running for 15 years, the past 10 or so in Dandenong South.

“Our five-year plan is to double the size of the business and potentially access export opportunities,” he said.

“It’s ambitious - but we like to be ambitious.”

Mr Cleland and the minister discussed growth constraints and how governments could assist.

“One of the opportunities is to grow infrastructure to improve access to the waterways,” he said.

“There was also discussion about the great resources in Westernport and Port Phillip Bay. “There needs to be a strategy and policy and funding to develop that resource for its economic value.”

BIAV chief executive Steven Potts said that with Melbourne’s population set to double, current bay use would increase considerably.

“With a lack of green space, the community in rapidly growing areas will turn towards the use of blue space on the water,” he said.

“Boating holidays are becoming more desirable to boat owners thanks to cheaper petrol prices, better trailers, larger trailable boats and rising inland waters.”

Mr Potts said the Victorian boating industry employed 17,700 people full-time and contributed $4.5 billion to the Victorian economy each year.

Across the state there are 268,336 marine licence holders and 172,000 registered boats.

“The closeness that we have as a team is incredible,” he said.

“This is a family, and all that adversity brings us closer as a group.”

Kolinski’s story - fittingly - adds even more to the Silverbacks’ fairytale.

Born in England, he started playing while he was at university in Bournemouth and fell in love with the game.

Having played originally as an outside linebacker and defensive end, when he moved to Australia and discovered the Silverbacks through one of their

local barbecues, he switched to inside linebacker. Last season he was named Division 2’s overall MVP, and defensive MVP. But that’s nothing compared to being able to call himself a champion as part of this year’s side.

“We did really well last year but we fell at the last hurdle,” he said.

“I think in order to be a champion, you have to know what it’s like to lose. I think this team learnt a lot.

"Through the struggle, everyone grinding and everyone working hard in the dirt and the mud - we did it. We don’t get to play in front of a home crowd, but that brought us closer together and made us want it even more.”

THE Pakenham Silverbacks have been further recognised for their all-conquering second season, with a host of players coming away with awards and honours from the Gridiron Victoria presentation night.

Pakenham players featured prominently in the Division 2 awards, with Adam Kolinski named offensive MVP and All-Victorian fullback; Richie Howlett named offensive line MVP and All-Victorian left guard; Toby Currie named AllVictorian kicker; Jason Howlett named All-Victorian wide receiver; and Dan Scholes named All-Victorian strong safety.

Geoff Best also placed fourth in Rookie of the Year voting, while Callum Riggins placed fourth for defensive line MVP. The Silverbacks have built something truly special in just their first two seasons of competition.

Despite yet having bricks, mortar or even a home field to call their own, the Pakenham side has already achieved in year two what many thought was impossible: They’ve built a brotherhood and a foundation of mateship so strong, that it has taken them from literally nothing to the Division 2 crown.

After a season in which they played no home games; in which they didn’t even have a home base; and in which many outside the club dismissed their chances of achieving anything - the Silverbacks hung on for dear life to claim the Division 2 title 9-6 over the Monash Barbarians last month.

Lions face up to Magpies

By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM will take homecourt advantage into the South East Football Netball League second semi-final after a stunning 35-25 upset of Hampton Park in Saturday’s qualifying final at Berwick.

The Lions took full advantage of the absence of star Redbacks’ goaler Emma Ryde, who signed on with the Melbourne Vixens last week, to book a date with Narre Warren this Saturday. The winner will go through to the grand final at Starling Road on Saturday 19 September.

“That was a massive win for us, we drew with them last time and we know they didn’t have Emma, but we can only play what

gets put before us,” said a proud Pakenham coach Kerry Twyford.

“There was a bit of motivation from the fact they weren’t really worried about us too much, but we stuck together and got a great result for our club.”

Twyford said there was one real key to the victory.

“Our full-court defence is what we needed to do well and today we just did it really well,” she said.

The Lions won every quarter against the Redbacks but it was a 10 goal to six second term that set up their best win of the season.

Claire Gibbs (GS) and Toni Dart (GA) shared the load evenly in attack, fed beautifully by Meaghan Winter, Lauren Lend-

ers and Taylor Beck, who had the better of the Redbacks’ midcourt, while Olivia Hunt (GD) and Michelle Briggs (GK) defended superbly.

Twyford said the thought of going straight through to a grand final was exciting, but there was still a mountain to climb.

“How lovely would that be, to go straight through, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” she said.

“We know what’s being put before us, Narre Warren, the benchmark team all season, the most consistent team all season so we’re going to need to be at our best to beat them.”

Reigning premier Doveton has confirmed its sleeping-giant status with a five-goal, 47-42, victory over Beaconsfield in Sunday’s

elimination final at Starling Road.

The Doves have explosiveness and versatility all over the court at the moment, with Cara Humbert, Liz Edwards and Aggie Seeto sharing duties in defence, Kate Murphy and Kate Sidebottom working diligently through the midcourt, while Rahni Samason and Rita Kaye-White are proving difficult to stop under the hoop.

Beaconsfield coach Amy Heath would be delighted with the seasons of players like Kaela Hughes, Kylie Baker, Georgie Benbow and Gabbi Stinear, while Andi Dickson and Bianca Sanzaro remained dangerous under the ring until the very end.

Wickers off to top start

By DAVID NAGEL BERWICK’S march towards its first grand final appearance in 16 years was off to the perfect start with a gutsy and grinding 12-point victory over Narre Warren on Saturday.

The Wickers qualifying final victory on their home-deck at Edwin Flack Reserve sets up a mouth-watering second semi-final showdown against Cranbourne at Pakenham on Saturday.

The winner marches through to the big-dance, with the loser getting a second-chance the following week against the winner of Sunday’s first semi-final between Narre Warren and Beaconsfield.

The Wickers, renowned for their high-skill and quick ballmovement, confronted a huge challenge, with the stronger bodies of the Magpies suited to the greasy conditions.

“Look they weren’t ideal conditions for us, and if we were a racehorse we probably would have been scratched,” said Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet.

“Having said that, we’re confident we can handle any conditions and we’ve got some real tough nuts around the footy. And it’s not just one or two anymore; we’ve got some options that we can roll through there with confidence.”

Madi Andrews and Michael Harold were typically ferocious at the contest, while Jayden Goumas and Jake McLardy continue to earn their stripes with their attack at the footy.

The Wickers looked in control, kicking out to a four-goal lead midway through the second quarter, but the Magpies cut the margin to just seven points at half time with three late goals.

The conditions took their toll after the main break, the Magpies wasteful kicking 2.10 to 4.3 in the second half to let the Wickers off the hook.

Mitch Johnson had a huge influence for the winners, kicking four in the first half, while ruckman Mick Manley and wingman Tom Brennan were superb fourquarter contributors.

Quirk and Matt Lee battled until the bitter end for the Maggies, while George Angelopoulos was the main offender up forward, kicking seven points from as many attempts.

Beaconsfield awoke from a second-quarter slumber to end Doveton’s season with a 25-point victory in Sunday’s elimination final at Officer.

The Eagles led by 16 points at quarter time, but a 6.1 to 0.0 second term had the Doves on the front foot. Beacy coach Clint Evans gave his side the mother-of-all sprays at the main break, and they responded, kicking eight goals to one in the second half to keep their premiership defence alive.

Taylor Joyce and Jesse Linkins kicked three each for the winners while Jake Aarts, Damien Szwaja and Daniel Mislicki got plenty of it around the ground.

Departing Doveton coach Shannon Henwood was terrific around the stoppages while Ryan Morrison and Russell Gabriel did the green and black proud.
