CCTV hits snag By ERIN SOMERVILLE ALBURY’S plans for installing CCTV in its CBD have copped a setback following a huge cost blow-out of the project. AlburyCity was presented with local tender Intelephony at Monday night’s council meeting which showed the CCTV project would equate to $1.1 million. This would include an initial $684,250 contract, on top of $416,224 for maintenance pricing. The sum far exceeds council’s initial allocation of $275,000 for the establishment of CCTV that is included in council’s 2015 -2016 Operational Plan, as well as the $165,000 per annum allocation for maintenance and operation in its Delivery Plan. While AlburyCity was presented with five tenders, it deemed three non-compliant and decided not to accept the other two based on high project costs. Council will now be reviewing the scope of the project system that was expected to supply 37 cameras to Dean Street and four cameras on Kiewa Street, Olive Street, and QEII Square. A smaller scope of the installation of CCTV would mean nodes and camera would only be installed in the priority areas in Dean Street, which have been identified between Townsend Street and David Street, and also looking south from Dean Street to Kiewa and Olive streets. “This scope covers all the licensed late night traders, designated taxi ranks and drop off zones and areas accessed by commonly used parking that is not located in Dean Street,” director James Jenkins stated in his report to council on Monday. “If council were to consider this reduced scope, the CCTV system would be designed, and have the capacity for, future stages to be added to the system as the need arose.” New tenders will now be called on for the supply, installation and commissioning of a closed circuit television system in Dean Street. Mayor Kevin Mack says reviewing the scope and re-advertising the tender will provide council with a better opportunity to achieve value for money as well as providing a more competitive field of tenders to choose from.

Fears held for missing yachtsman

THERE are serious concerns over a missing Wodonga man whose shipwrecked yacht surfaced in Mallacoota on Monday. Water Police have begun a search operation after crew on an abalone boat spotted the yacht on the rocks around 9.45am Monday and raised alarm. It’s believed the boat belongs to a 65-year-old Wodonga man who left Paynesville for Eden on Saturday, but never arrived at his destination. On Monday, police believed it was unlikely the man was still on the boat, but were unable to access the boat due to rough conditions. The Coast Guard, Air Ambulance and SES are also assisting with the search, which also includes the area around Rame Head. Anyone who sights the missing man is urged to contact triple-zero immediately.
