One big false alarm POLICE are urging people to mindful of making potentially harmful comments on social media after it was revealed that last week’s alleged sexual assault on a local teenager by three men did not occur. The revelation on Friday evening has been met with anger and frustration by many in the community, some of who have vented their thoughts via social media and online news outlets. “The hype on social media is not warranted,” Albury LAC Inspector Scott Russell said. “People are making these types of comments and don’t know the full circumstances around the investigation. “There is no use getting angry on social media, we’ve moved on from it.” Police announced on Friday eve-
ning that the reported sexual assault of a teenage girl in Albury earlier this week had concluded. Police were told the 17-year-old girl was dragged into a bush and sexually assaulted after being confronted by three men while walking across the Dean Street footbridge about 6.30pm on Tuesday, April 28. Detectives from Albury Local Area Command have conducted extensive inquiries since the reported incident, including forensic testing, and have spoken to a number of people. “The investigation has now finalised,” the police media statement read on Friday evening. “Police are no longer seeking three men and no further action is anticipated.” Local police are not using the term
fake report, but cannot confirm the full events surrounding the conclusion of the investigation. The assault was a large talking point in the community last week, with COMFIT images of the alleged attackers having been shared extensively on social media, while many women even reported taking their evening walks inside a gym rather than on the streets. The revelation also comes after Albury’s Mayor Kevin Mack received national criticism after he discouraged women to walk alone as it could be an “invitation” to be taken advantage of. The remorseful mayor apologised for his comments on Friday afternoon, when his full apology was reported online by Albury Wodonga NewsWeekly. “On reflection, my focus and my choice of words was poor, and for that
I’m extremely remorseful,” Cr Mack said as part of his apology. “I absolutely and categorically support women and their rights, and believe violence against women is totally unacceptable in any form, and to that end I encourage the community as one to support this and prevent this.” Women’s support agencies are now hoping the incident will not deter women from reporting sexual assaults or domestic violence to the proper authorities. “One of the biggest barriers is women coming forward,” Women’s Centre Albury-Wodonga acting manager Peta Pitman said. “There is a fear they won’t be believed. “Women should report these events if they should happen.
“Police will take it seriously.” Ms Pitman said the alleged assault that shook the community last week also brought to surface discussion of women’s safety. “It has created conversation in the community about this. “The community stood up and said we don’t want this happening in our community, and that women should be able to go about life without fear of this happening. Ms Pitman said last week’s event also made the community re-examine the attitudes of violence against women. “It was a chance to stop and realise that this isn’t how a community should be and people who are perpetrating these crimes should be responsible.” It is believed the teenager won’t face criminal charges.
