The youth gamble By ERIN SOMERVILLE

LOCAL support services are concerned an increasing number of young people are becoming addicted to gambling through online betting agencies, apps, and social media. The newly-launched youth support website myrollercoaster has dedicated a portion of its site to addressing the issue of young people and gambling on the Border, while Gateway Health has labelled it as an emerging issue among local youth. “Community concern is growing over the impact gambling is having on young people, particularly through sport, advertising, online games and social media, CEO of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation Serge Sardo said. “Research has found gaming apps are making gambling more accessible and attractive to young people, making gambling more socially acceptable. “Researchers are concerned this is ‘normalising’ gambling to young people. Gateway Health’s Gamblers Help counsellor David Rosewarne said a person with a gambling problem often had difficulty in limiting the time or money they spent on gambling, often leading to serious consequences for the gambler or for others in their life and community. Friends of young people, parents, and teachers are encouraged to look for signs that may indicate a young person is suffering from a gambling problem. This includes spending lots of time talking or thinking about gambling, obsessing over simulated gambling apps, obsessing about odds when watching sport rather than the game, borrowing

money from family and friends, lying about gambling activities, or being moody or stressed when not gambling. The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation shows one in five adults developed a gambling problem before the age of 18, while one in every high school class of 25 students will struggle with betting. Financial loss can be just the tip of the iceberg, with problem gambling also leading to relationship breakdowns, employment issues, and even mental and physical health problems. Mr Rosewarne said many young people were looking to the internet for help with gambling problems. “While we have received feedback this issue is beginning to emerge with youth on the Border, this has not yet filtered directly through to our service, he said. “We understand youth do access Gambling Help Services but it is most commonly through our online support services. If a young person would like support for their gambling behaviour, there is a dedicated youth helpline - Gambler’s Help Youthline on 1800 262 376 or gamblinghelponline.org.au. Parents who would like more information on how to discuss gambling with teenagers can find the foundation’s guide at http://kidbet.com.au/download/ vrgf-parents-gambling-guide. pdf The local Gamblers Help Service for Hume region is located at Gateway Health and can be contacted on 02 6022 8888 or 1800 658 573. Help is also available at www.myrollercoaster.org.au
