“We’re also advocating to VicRoads for better crossings on the trails,” Mr Baimbridge said. “We’re aware of what needs to be done and are working to try and achieve it.” The trail follows the path of the historical railway line through the Yarra Valley, starting behind Lilydale railway station and finishing in the Warburton township. a good, long while about the need for more toilets, but we haven’t got anywhere yet,” he said. Yarra Ranges Council’s executive officer of Recreation and Active Living, Ben Baimbridge, said council was in the process of designing and installing a public toilet on the trail in Woori Yallock this year. Mr Baimbridge said that five Visitor Nodes were also being established along the trail, with water bubblers for trail users, as well as improved signage to “improve the experience” for all users.

down the number of people who used the trail annually, he believed over 200,000 people used the iconic 39-kilometre recreation trail every year, with numbers only going up. Mr Wallens said the issue of access to toilets and water was serious, with a 25-kilometre stretch between Millgrove and Mount Evelyn not immediately serviced with toilets. Without access to the toilets in some areas, Mr Wallens said that users were left stranded if nature called. “We’ve been talking to council for

flow of traffic; passing on the right and using audible warnings, such as bells; and planning trips, to know where toilets and bins are located. Mr Wallens echoed these tips, and said it was important for cyclists to not use the trail as a “training track”, and to travel at appropriate speeds near pedestrians and other users. “There is also quite an onus on pedestrians to realise that it’s a multi-use path and to be a bit careful in terms of wandering all over it,” he said. He said that while it was hard to pin

THE Friends of the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail group is imploring users of the trail to display a greater level of ‘trail etiquette’. As the cooler autumn weather hits the region, greater numbers of walkers, cyclists and horse-riders have hit the iconic trail to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. Unfortunately, there have been increased reports of the public using the trail without abiding by common-sense trail etiquette. Examples include alerting other users to your presence and not running on the middle of the track. It has also become apparent that people haven’t been using nearby toilet facilities before hitting the trail. In recent months, this has become problematic for those entrusted with ensuring the pathways and nearby areas are kept clean. Member of the Friends group, Phil Wallens, told the Mail that it was a “difficult situation” on the trail, with cyclists and pedestrians ignoring proper etiquette and risking accidents. Mr Wallens gave examples of cyclists travelling at great speeds along the track and failing to slow down or use their bell around pedestrians, as well as pedestrians and trail-users not keeping to the left. He said that, despite walking dogs off-lead being prohibited, users had been letting their dogs roam freely on the path, which posed risks to cyclists, pedestrians and other dogs. In response to these reports, Yarra Ranges Council is preparing a pamphlet and other methods of communication to help improve trail etiquette. These include being respectful to everyone on the trail; sticking to the left-hand side and checking before crossing the trail; not blocking the
