Caitlin was one of several Yarra Ranges residents to be awarded for their actions at the ceremony, and the youngest award recipient. She joined other young residents in receiving Australia Day accolades, with one receiving a top award from

the council and another becoming a national finalist for one of the country’s top honours. Mount Evelyn’s Prue Northey, 22, received the award for Young Citizen of the Year for her work as chairperson of the Yarra Ranges Relay for Life in the past two years. The event, which was based in Healesville before moving to Kalorama

in 2014, has been wildly successful under Prue’s management. She is also a participant in the event, and has raised a total of $129,174 for Cancer Council Victoria. AT THE age of 15, Mater Christi student Caitlin MacDonald is already a passionate environmental advocate and an active citizen in the Yarra Ranges. The Year 10 student and Narre Warren East resident told the Mail that she worked inside and outside of her school to make the world around her a better place. With efforts including facilitating Earth Hour events and community events raising awareness of fair trade, ethical and sustainable projects, Caitlin’s passion for the environment has not gone unnoticed. The teenager was awarded the Ken McIntosh Memorial Award for Young Environmental Achiever of the Year at the Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day Awards event at Burrinja yesterday (Monday 26 January). Yarra Ranges Mayor Maria McCarthy said that caring for the environment and social issues were second nature to Caitlin, and that she led her peers by example. “She is a positive role model at school and is often seen walking around at lunch-time collecting, sorting, recycling and composting rubbish,” Cr McCarthy said. “Her daily actions reflect her values and compassion for the environment.” Caitlin said that some of her proudest achievements were her campaigns both inside and outside her school grounds, including a petition against the expansion of coal ports near the Great Barrier Reef that gained over 750 signatures. She said she was honoured to receive the Australia Day award. “It was a big surprise, but it’s an incredible privilege and an honour,” Caitlin said. At the awards ceremony, Cr McCarthy described the award-winner, who is a regular attendee at youth summits as someone who was “relentless and unflinching in her desire to live by a sustainable philosophy”. “She is wise beyond her years and an inspiration to others hoping to lead a sustainable and environmentallyconscious life.” The Ken McIntosh Memorial Award is given to people in the com-
