Stop these hoons By ANEEKA SIMONIS A SHAKEN mum is demanding speed bumps be installed on a Lakeside road after a speeding hoon almost hit her and her five year-old son last week. Suzie Barata, who lives off Clearwater Drive in Lakeside, said she and her son Zavier were walking across the road to a nearby park when a “distracted” driver estimated to be travelling twice the speed limit nearly hit them on Saturday 17 January. “My son and I were walking across the road and I saw the driver wasn’t slowing down. I pushed my son out of the way to get him off the road,” Suzie recalled. “I was shaking and the (driver) just seemed to be in her own little bubble.” The mum of two claimed the woman, who was driving a grey Ford sedan, was driving around 80km/h, double the 40km/h speed limit, which could have seriously injured her and her fiveyear-old son. “I was scared,” Zavier said. Clearwater Drive resident Maryse Williams has lived in the area for seven years and said the
problem was only getting worse. “It’s an accident waiting to happen. I hear mothers screaming all the time - you think it’s because their child is misbehaving but they’re trying to put one in a car seat while the other is out near the road when a car flies by,” she said. “They fly. They do 80km/h or more easily. When I back out, I have to come to a complete stop because they come out of nowhere,” said the grandmother who was extra cautious over the Christmas period when her grandchildren came over. Donna Langley, who is visiting family from her home in New Zealand, said she was shocked to see the speed at which some drivers travelled along the residential roads. CARDINIA Shire Mayor Leticia Wilmot was spotted shaking a Tigers jersey at Toomuc Recreation Reserve earlier this week in anticipation of Richmond Football Club’s upcoming arrival. The Tigers will return to the shire for
their third consecutive public training session from 4pm on Friday 23 January, ahead of the Australia Day long weekend. “It will be fantastic to be able to welcome the Richmond Football Club into Cardinia Shire again. I encourage everyone to come down to the ground, with
friends and family, to support the players and take part in the footy clinic and other free activities,” she said. As well as taking part in the playerled footy clinic, fans will get the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Tigers during an autograph session.

Missing Mav By CASEY NEILL MUCH-LOVED horse Maverick is missing after thieves snatched him from his Dandenong North paddock. His owner Brittany Jubb, 22, from Clyde and her mother Tricia from Cranbourne have been searching high and low for the 23-year-old chestnut quarter horse gelding since Wednesday 7 January. Tricia became aware of a problem that morning when she received a call from a City of Greater Dandenong ranger because a horse was found on the Monash Freeway between Heatherton and Stud roads at 6am. The thoroughbred chestnut gelding was a companion for Maverick. “The ranger and police caught it and walked back along a public bike path which backs onto our paddock,” Tricia said. “There are other paddocks in this area, but the horse started to take over and walked the ranger to an area of our fence line that clearly had been deliberately cut. “I arrived at the paddock shortly after and discovered that my daughter’s horse was gone.” Maverick is 15.1 hands with distinctive markings - four long white socks and a white star/strip that angled down the right side of his nose. He was branded HA with an arrow underneath the letters pointing towards his tail and has a scar on his far front hoof. “It is all very confusing as we don’t know whether they attempted to steal the other horse as well, used the other horse just
A friend of Brittany Jubb on Maverick. to walk along with Maverick so perhaps he wouldn’t neigh, or simply knew the other horse got out when they cut the middle fence and left it out to roam,” Tricia said. “It is, however, unlikely to have wandered the distance to the freeway away from all horses in the area on its own.” Tricia discovered fresh manure leading from the paddock to Clow Street in Dandenong via a bike path. “The Clow Street exit point has an oval area with a car park so Maverick may have been loaded there,” she said. “Someone has gone to great lengths to get our horse and he is not overly easy to catch and there were 20 horses in that paddock to choose from. “I have leased this paddock in Dandenong North for around 30 years and never had a horse stolen or known of others stolen in this area. eight weeks ago as there was plenty of feed there for the summer period.” Brittany has owned Maverick for about 10 years and rode him in dressage and other competitions. “He has been retired for six to seven-odd months, purely as she felt he had done enough and deserved retirement - not through injury,” Tricia said. “She loves him so much and wants to give him the retirement he deserves.” The Jubbs have notified sale yards and contacted knackeries. Dandenong police Sergeant Ally Howard said horse thefts were rare in the area. “This is something unusual,” she said. “I expect someone would have seen something. Graffiti scar By LACHLAN MOORHEAD GRAFFITI vandalism in Casey has continued to rise over the past two years. And Casey Council and Victoria Police are again urging the community to report graffiti sighted as part of an ongoing joint operation. City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said the increase could be attributed to the municipality’s growth in both infrastructure and population. “It’s (graffiti) certainly increasing in the last 12 months to two years. “It remained fairly static for five to eight years and then it has gradually started to increase. “But we’re also seeing a significant increase in the amount of hard infrastructure that we have in the municipality - industrial areas, housing areas, fences, buildings and all of those things. “As the municipality continues to grow, obviously there’s an increasing pallet for people to be using.� Casey’s graffiti management program was started in 2002 by the council and police, and

Police are interested in speaking to anyone that may be aware of the offender.

POLICE responded to two incidents involving explosive devices last week. On Thursday 15 January police were called to an address along Boobyalla Street in Doveton around 1am. Two 15-year-old twins heard a loud explosion and went out-
side to find a glass bottle and wires in their mailbox. The soda bomb device was detonated ahead of another, similar report that day. At around 5.30pm in Nerrena Rise in Cranbourne West, fireworks were discovered in a plastic milk bottle which luck-
ily did not explode. Minor damage was caused to a car in the driveway where the device was found. Police said this is not unusual activity for this time of year and said they have had to call on the Bomb Squad to detonate these devices in the past.

CASEY police have dismissed suggestions dog thefts in the municipality have become a major problem, after media reports the area was Victoria’s top dog theft region. This week the Herald Sun reported that 102 dogs had been listed as stolen in the City of Casey in the past five years, according to data provided by Victoria Police and confirmed on Friday by the state’s new Crime Statistics Agency. But Detective Sergeant Geoff Rumble from Narre Warren police said there was no current anecdotal evidence that the theft of dogs was a “major issue” in Casey. “It is our belief that the majority of the reports are that of dogs that have gone missing for whatever reason and not stolen,” he said. “Some are attributed to insecure yards not registered with council, so there’s no way of tracking the owners.” Reports also suggested that dogs were being stolen for illegal fights, but Det Sgt Rumble said this was unlikely. “There is no evidence to suggest that dogs are stolen to participate in illegal dog fights,” he said. City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said any “objective reporting” of dog thefts in Casey should be based on a comparative basis between stolen dogs and registered dogs, rather than “absolute numbers”. The City of Casey is the state’s largest municipality, with more than 280,000 residents and 25,589 dogs, as of 30 June last year. “Council undertakes a range of animal management services, including reuniting lost dogs with their owners and investigating and prosecuting serious dog attacks, however, the theft of dogs is a matter for the police,” Ms Bell said. “Council would like to remind residents to register their animals by 10 April each year.

I DON'T approve of the article on page 11 (Berwick News, 15 January), 'Eaten Alive’. In my opinion the last six lines of the article glamourises the use of methamphetamine (ice) and doesn’t give illicit drug users a suggested pathway to rehabilitate. The case study says he has recovered, but in no way says how. I imagine he did rehab, counselling and possibly narcotics anonymous. Other drug users will be drawn to reading this article but you offer no helpful solutions for them. The last six lines of the article, in my opinion, make ice sound like something you might want to try. Lastly, meth users never beat their addiction. Instead they become clean from drug use. They will always be addicted to meth. The chemistry in their brain has been changed by using meth. This is a concept non-addicts often don’t understand, but easier terminology for the general population is “the drug user is now no longer using and is following a program of recovery”. The 12-step program of recovery at Narcotics Anonymous is an excellent program of ongoing support for addicts and recovering addicts. In your article also it’s good to use a few names for the drug not just “ice.” Ice, shard and meth are some of the street names that kids will be offered, it’s good if they know what they are being offered, education is a big part of the solution. Meth addiction is a vicious problem we have in our society and is growing at a frightening rate. It needs to be approached by the media by providing tools to assist in solving it. Stop the cruelty SHOOTING an inoffensive bird with a bow and arrow is indeed a “despicable“ act (Cruelty for the birds, News, 15 January) but how many of us are guilty of cruelty to birds on a daily basis without even recognising it? How many of us eat commercially produced eggs? If so we are guilty of slicing off birds' beaks with a red hot blade or laser and permanently incarcerating them inside small, barren, wire cages in which they are constantly feather pecked by their half-crazed “cellmates“. We are guilty of killing all male chicks by dropping them live into mincing machines. How many eat chicken? Chickens raised for meat are abnormally bred to grow to adult size in just six weeks. Almost all are in chronic pain by the time they reach slaughter weight because their baby legs buckle under the weight of their huge bodies. All birds die a hideously cruel death. As a vegan of 35 years I can assure you that no cruelty to animals is necessary in order to enjoy a healthy and happy life. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.
That ain’t art GRAFFITI is not art, it is vandalism and it is open flouting of the rule of law.
It is sometimes said that those who spray graffiti are “are above the law” and that graffiti is “soft terrorism”. Public places have been vandalised and terrorised by graffiti vandals. Graffiti is a whole bunch of meaningless scrawls, saying nothing except that they have scored one over the other contenders for space. The places they reach out into are ridiculous, and are scrawled at great risk to their lives. Graffitti lines the walls alongside the railway corridors of all Metro rail routes and are an eyesore. The cost to local government goes into the hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars. A gross waste of tax, and ratepayers' money. This vandalism and “soft terrorism” must stop. It does not reflect well, and is a deterrent to tourism; we come across as a chaotic society which tolerates mayhem. I urge the federal, state, and local governments to jointly start a program of elimination of graffiti, by placing the onus to clean up on the owners of property alongside the railway corridors, or wherever graffitti occurs. If it is private property, then the property owner has responsibility to clean up, and if it is public property, then it is the responsibility of the relevant government authority to clean up. We owe it to ourselves, to create an environment that is graffiti-free, and not let these vandals and terrorists dominate our

Food for thought MY HAT goes off to the young Digger featured in last week’s edition of the News. The returned soldier, “a Cranbourne boy“ at heart, who risked his life along with others in his unit to save countless lives, is a true hero, deserving of the highest accolades. Such an inspiration doing his speaking tour, raising awareness about the dangers that they face on a daily basis while oversees and also about the difficulties of readjusting to civilian life. But unfortunately we live in world of consumerism, twisted priorities and so-called “celebrity“ worshipping. No wonder the returned soldiers find it hard to reconnect with old friends, and readjust to the so-called normal life. In my opinion, the men and women that put their lives in danger, and sometimes pay the ultimate sacrifice so we can have the lifestyle and freedom that we take for granted, are the real celebrities. CASEY residents with more than 20 years’ service are set to lose their jobs at Sandown Racecourse. Sandown and Caulfield garden and grounds maintenance staff last Thursday learned that the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) would be contracting out their 34 jobs. The announcement followed six months of enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) negotiations. “Some of my mates have been here 40-odd years,” one worker told the News. Workers’ contracts include a clause banning them from speaking to the media so the News is withholding his identity. “All they’d offered was a zero per cent pay rise for three years, which basically equates to a pay cut,” he said.
“We went down last Thursday for another meeting. I thought they’d at least offer us one or two per cent,” he said. But instead the MRC representative produced voluntary redundancy documents, offering a 10 per cent bonus on top of the EBA-stipulated redundancy payout and entitlements. “They’re calling them voluntary, but according to them you either take the redundancy or take your leave. After that I don’t know what will happen,” the worker said. “Four guys have already signed them. “One of the blokes that signed his was in tears over it. “I don’t think it’d be the same place to work. I don’t know if I can enjoy it anymore.” He said the MRC told employ-
ees that it had engaged contractors to start work on 1 February and encouraged them to apply for a job with the company. “The pay will be half the money we’re earning now and the conditions won’t be the same,” he said. “We fought for years to get these conditions and pay. “The MRC is crying poor all the time. They’re the richest racing club in Australia.” The worker said industrial action was likely but the Sandown Australia Day Races would be safe. “You’ve got to go through all the rigmarole. You have to apply with Fair Work for protected action,” he said. The Blue Diamond Stakes is on at Caulfield on 28 February. “They’d be probably a little bit worried about that one, I’d say,”
he said. Australian Workers Union (AWU) Victorian secretary Ben Davis said the decision was “a disproportionate response”. “There were no whispers. It’s just come completely out of the blue,” he said. Mr Davis said the union would lodge a dispute with Fair Work and call an emergency meeting of delegates from all metropolitan Melbourne racecourses to “talk through a campaign”. An MRC spokesman said the decision followed a broader 18-month efficiency review to tackle rising losses in its racing business, which topped $6 million per annum in recent years. He said MRC was forced to explore other options because the AWU made unreasonable demands.

A top mum By BRIDGET SCOTT THE last month or so is always a busy time for most, but for one Cranbourne mother it’s been a total whirlwind. Mother of two and pageant contestant, Mrs Australia Becky Branca recently returned from China where she attended the Mrs Globe competition. The Cranbourne North resident said it went very well. “It was such a fantastic and rewarding experience,” she said. “You know when you feel like you’re in the right place at the right time.” Ms Branca was overseas for just over 10 days and said it was “full on”. “Each day we had a full production on live TV,” she said. “I was in the paper nearly every day.”

said it was huge, with her face on billboards all across the city. The Mrs Australia won “Most Helpful” during her time over there and said as an Australian it was a great privilege. Mrs South Africa won the pageant overall. “Most Helpful is like their Miss Congeniality,” she said. “We hold ourselves in high regard of helping others.” A proud supporter of a number of charities, including Pink Hope and Bully Zero, she hoped to raise her profile further and one day work from home and pursue her career as a fashion designer. Ms Branca was proud to make the final in China and said visiting orphanages was a highlight for her.

THE Bridge has unveiled new branding for three services that are supporting people with disabilities in the south-east. Assistant Social Services Minister Mitch Fifield launched The Bridge Works, The Bridge Connects and The Bridge Employment on 15 December at a special event at supported employment service The Bridge Works in Dandenong. The Bridge, formerly known as Options Victoria, has been operating for more than 40 years and provides employment and community services to people with disability throughout the region. The Bridge Works is a supported employment service in Dandenong with more than 40 staff with a disability that provides warehousing and logistics. The Bridge Connects includes day support, respite, social and leisure activities and The Bridge Employment provides job placement and support. More than 200 guests watched a short film starring supported employee Jono Burggraaf who uses The Bridge Connects’ getaways service. The film showed a day in Jono’s life, his passion for his job, his independence in travelling, working and friendships, and his love of reading the weather report on a local radio station. The celebration concluded with Mr Fifield and supported employee Giuseppe di Benedetto unveiling plaques for the three new service names on stage. “Today we’re here to celebrate the good things about The Bridge Works, and the benefits of supported employment to the people involved,” The Bridge CEO Phillip Toovey said. “The Bridge Works supports and employs nearly 50 people, so we’re a small part of this industry, but when it comes to the workers, it certainly is all about quality - and when it comes to quality of services to business, it’s the same thing - quality work.” Visit www.thebridgeinc.org.au for more information.

High time for help By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AT HIS lowest ebb, Florin Bordei found no help in Casey. It was five years ago when the father-of-three was caught deeply in the thralls of a bipolar disorder, searching desperately for a support group in his local area but unable to find one. Now in a better place and with a new outlook on life, Florin has taken responsibility into his own hands, this month starting up the not-for-profit South Eastern Bipolar Network. “I needed something while I was going through it but nothing was available at the time,” Florin, 39, said. “There was nothing. I went through all the motions - heavy drinking, my marriage was also in tatters at the time - I had to seek help from my local GP, and he referred me to a special-
ist and I had to learn the hard way. “To tell the truth, until I was diagnosed I hadn’t even heard of bipolar. "If I can help anyone at all by setting up this support network, it would be great.” While in the grips of his condition, Florin, who migrated to Australia from Romania in 1992, learnt of the Melbourne Bipolar Network, a group he used for inspiration to form the Casey Network. He said the Melbourne Network allowed people suffering from the illness to share and listen to other people’s experiences - a reminder that they weren’t suffering alone. “The idea is that you meet regularly. Once a month, once a fortnight, depends on what people need,” Florin said. “Bipolar affects people dif-
ferently. Some people want to talk, some people don’t. At our meetings if you don’t want to talk about it, you may be happy just to listen. “Bipolar sufferers, if they’re not aware they have the illness, it tends to lead to things like drug use, alcoholism or suicide in some cases and if we can stop these things, our mission is accomplished.” When speaking of his own battle with the disorder, Florin recalls the huge emotional highs and the crushing lows. “It goes from a very dazzling high - you feel like you’re on drugs - and then you feel you’re on rock bottom,” he said. “It takes its toll both mentally and physically.” Those in need of immediate assistance, or who need to talk to someone they can trust, can phone Lifeline on 131 114.

Growing road to recovery in mental health A VOLUNTARY Australian mental health movement continues to help reshape people’s lives in Berwick after setting up in the community 15 years ago. GROW is a mental wellbeing program that enables the participants, who are suffering from a range of mental illnesses and anxieties, to run the weekly two-hour meetings themselves.
The Berwick GROW group meets at the Berwick Neighbourhood Centre for two hours every Wednesday. But GROW, which was originally called Recovery, was first set up in Australia in 1957, and now operates internationally. The weekly meetings are run by group members and based on a 12-step framework, concluding with a written

evaluation involving all participants. GROW meetings don’t include professional counsellors or psychologists, with one field worker noting that the meetings are understood as “complementing professional mental health services”. The sessions are also open to all adults and only first names are used.

Robbers knock out boy’s teeth A MUGGING victim had his two front teeth knocked out when he and another boy were attacked on their way home from a house party in Cranbourne. About 11.30pm on Thursday 8 January the two boys were walking down Fairfield Street in Cranbourne when they were approached by three males who were described as African in appearance. Police believe these three men had been at the party uninvited. One of the victims was kicked to the throat by a man who was described as tall and lanky wearing skinny leg jeans. He also had spray directed at his eyes which caused him to lose vision and also burnt his lips. The other victim was knocked out and police believe his wallet was stolen. One of the victims will undergo significant dental repairs after his two front teeth were knocked out. Both boys were taken to Casey Hospital and police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward or people who were at the same party.

Station in a song festival IT’S time to stay tuned in. This week Casey Radio is broadcasting live for each day of the Tamworth Country Music Festival, transmitting from the centre of town. A range of Casey musicians are participating in the festival including Cathy Dobson, Sonyta Trahar and Nia Robertson, while stars James Blundell, Beccy Cole, Adam Brand, Kayla Bell and Jared Porter are also performing at the gig.
Casey councillor Wayne Smith, who is helping to cover the festival for Casey Radio, said the show has been afforded a three-hour slot each day, compared to last year’s hourly session. “We’ve set up the studio in Tamworth and all the performers and artists come to us,” Cr Smith said, on the first day of the festival. “We have another four days in store and we’re trying to feature all the Casey people on the radio show.

Country royalty tours COUNTRY singer songwriter Eric Lee Beddingfield will perform at the Royal Hotel in Kooweerup for one night only on 31 January. Beddingfield, direct from Nashville, Tennessee, and supported by locals Turk Tresize and band, will perform his tribute song The Gospel According to Jones to the late George Jones who also sang on the record, This Life Ain’t for Everybody. Jones was a mentor, cheerleader
and friend of Beddingfield and the music video received strong national airplay in the States. NARRE Warren Calisthenics Club, continues to grow and has enjoyed another successful 2014 competition season. As the club logo promotes, ‘Make friends for life’ and this is what its members do. Last year marked many milestones for a number of its girls and it is a credit to the club that many of the seniors of 2014 were the club’s ‘tinies’ in 2000. The club has girls who have been members for 10, 15, 20, 30 and 35 years.
The club has had success year after year across all sections, but is proud that it has kept the girls at the club doing a sport they love for so long. Calisthenics develops strength, flexibility, deportment and co-ordination through its physical items - march, freearm, rods and clubs while at the same time enhancing grace and poise in aesthetics (an item with elements of ballet) and encouraging girls to express themselves and perform with confidence through singing and dancing. Calisthenics is such a diverse
sport and a team sport. The club welcomes new members to come and have a go. The first three classes in February are free for new members to come and have a go and classes are offered to girls from four years of age to masters, 27 years of age plus. The club’s masters are in their sixth year. Former cala girls or those who have experience as a dancer or who are just keen to give it a try can drop by on 2 February and join. The club competes at local com-
petitions and the juniors, intermediates and seniors go to the Royal South Street competitions in Ballarat (the highlight for every girl - which is performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre). It holds weekly classes in the performing arts hall at Fleetwood Primary School, Fleetwood Drive, Narre Warren. Dance partners BERWICK’S Karlie Grace Dancers has recently been named an Angelina Ballerina Academy member studio and joins a growing network of more than 140 studios in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand which offer this successful international dance program. As seen on the popular ABC television show, Angelina Ballerina is a remarkable little mouse who wants to become a prima ballerina. “A little star with big dreams,� she has inspired little girls and boys to dance through her best-selling books for more than 25 years. To become an Angelina Ballerina Academy, studios must undergo a selection process and meet specific criteria, including membership of a recognised national or international teaching organisation, premium dance facilities and the highest caliber of teachers. Studio principal Karlie Johnson said the school is delighted to be associated with Angelina Ballerina and is very excited at being the first school in the local area to be offering this very creative and highly specialized pre-school program. The studio prides itself on introducing children to dance in a nurturing and caring, yet structured nature, with children being able to start classes from two and a half years old.
The Angelina Ballerina curriculum was developed by dance education specialist Beverly Spell, master teacher and author of the Leap ’N Learn program. Angelina Ballerina’s voice will help guide aspiring dancers through their movement lessons and the program features a custom-designed music soundtrack. From this year, pre-school classes at Karlie Grace Dancers will include some Angelina themed activities as well as all the traditional elements of dance class.

Tractors pull in the crowd THIS year’s Tooradin Tractor Pull and Truck Show has been dubbed as being bigger and better than ever. Event organiser Allan Reeve said they had the “biggest crowd that’s ever been there�. “That’s what people were telling me,� he said. The 16-year-old event revved up Rutter Reserve in Tooradin last weekend much to the delight of hundreds of people. “There were cars banked up on the other side of Tooradin,� Mr Reeve said. The organiser said he would put down the huge numbers to advertising prior to the event and said “everyone knew about it�. He said the tractors were a huge hit.

HUMAIRA Ansari knows what it takes to make a fresh start. The Berwick resident was born in Afghanistan, before spending 15 years as a refugee in Pakistan and then moving to Canada to study and start a career. Humaira, a Master Hypnotherapist, has now helped the Casey community find a new lease on life after she held free empowerment and weight loss sessions at Berwick Healthcare this week. “There is a need for this support and there needs to be awareness that help is out there, and awareness that people can do it themselves,” Humaira, 37, said. “People feel sort of helpless, especially when they get into habits that they can’t change.” Humaira, a strong advocate for change in one’s life, said most people came to her to stop addictions such as smoking, while many also sought relief for their anxiety.

changed so much in my life through decision-making and choices. “Every single one of us has the power in ourselves.” Humaira said the biggest changes she brought upon herself were instigated by immersing herself in different cultures. Fun day just keeps growing By BRIDGET SCOTT THE Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne kept people busy yesterday as the annual family fun day rolled around again. In a first for the event, free shuttle buses ran to the garden between 9am and 4pm to help ensure nobody missed out. Presented by the Royal Botanic Gardens in conjunction with South East Water and the City of Casey, families took part in a range of activities which included a magic show, snake handler, art and craft sessions, potting up a plant, storytelling, South East Water’s popular Wall of Buckets game, and more. Cranbourne Gardens director Chris Russell said the day had quickly become a must-do for families throughout the area. “Now in its fifth year, the family fun day is a great day out for the whole family,” he said. “Not only is it lots of fun for the kids, it’s also a great opportunity to chat with the gardens’ experts and get lots of hints and tips about plant selection, water use, and how to keep your garden looking good in a dry climate.”

United they’ll stand By JARROD POTTER ONE club, one vision, and most importantly, one collective goal. After years of separation in Pakenham and Cardinia’s soccer community, the junior and senior teams have merged to form Pakenham United FC. The former Pakenham SC and Cardinia United Junior SC committees were in discussions throughout 2014 and the go-ahead was announced in December, as Pakenham United FC emerged to create a unified soccer presence in this suburb and surrounds. Pakenham United committee member Rob Hastings - who led the steering committee to merge the sides - said the future is brighter together as one club than it ever could have been separated. “It’s definitely great for the future of the community because it’s no good having kids who suddenly become eligible to be seniors having to go somewhere else to play,” Hastings said. “Now youngsters can join our club and know that it is an all-age club for both males and females and that’s what it should be. “It’s an important part of community life and we’re thrilled.” With IYU Recreation Reserve at Henry Road rapidly progressing ahead of its 2016 opening, Hastings and the steering committee were determined to get Pakenham soccer to a singular point - one club where players can join at five years old and take that passion all the way to their final game. “Having the new facility at Henry Road, which will be presented to us for the 2016 season, we just said at that point we need to grow together and not go and present ourselves to a benefactor like the council as two separate entities; it made

The newly formed club will place sides into the Football Federation Victoria (FFV) senior and junior competitions with matches to be played at Lakeside Oval and Cardinia Recreation Reserve. Registration for anyone interested in joining Pakenham United - with senior and junior, male and female teams pres-
ent at the club - will be Sunday 1 February at Lakeside Oval, followed practice matches and pre-season tournaments scheduled throughout February for all ages. Any players interested in joining the club can visit the “Pakenham United FC” Facebook page for more information.
Our girls face Asia’s best in spotlight TIME is ticking away quickly before Pakenham Floorball Club becomes the spotlight of the floorball world. The club will host the best of the Asia Pacific’s female teams for the Women’s World Floorball Championships Qualifications this month. The Asia Pacific tournament qualifiers, running from 23-25 January at Pakenham’s Cardinia Life, will see Team Australia vie against Japan, Singapore and New Zealand for a chance to book a spot in the World Cup later this year. The Squishees have three club members in the Australian team - Kayleigh Tribe, Freya Carson and Ash Bourke - who will fight their hardest to qualify for the World Cup in Tampere, Finland, this December. The three best teams of the four will qualify for the international tournament with Australia’s matches scheduled for 3.15pm Friday (Japan), 3pm Saturday (New Zealand) and 3.15pm Sunday (Singapore).

Lions dumped out By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM’S (9/151) faint hopes of playing WGCA Premier Division finals cricket have been dashed after the Lions went down to Merinda Park (6/156) at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. A huge crowd turned out to watch the important day-night contest, which the fifth-placed Lions needed to win to draw within two games of the top four. They are now three games out with just four rounds remaining. Merinda Park batted first with Andrew Martin (42), Anthony Craddock (36) and Glen Ward (33) the mainstays of the innings. Martin and Ward built an important 68-run stand for the fifth-wicket that stole back the momentum after the Lions had taken three quick wickets for 11 runs. Russ Lehman (29) and Bradey Welsh (24) then got the Lions off to a solid start in reply, but Craig Boswell (2/28) and Dylan Cuthbertson (2/34) produced some magic with the ball to restrict the Lions to a losing score. Pakenham captain Jason Williams (40) nearly got his side across the line. Kooweerup’s (5/197) champion opener Chris O’Hara (80 not out) has piloted the Demons to one of the wins of the season in a last-ball thriller against Tooradin (5/196). Needing four runs to win off the last two balls, O’Hara lofted Ash Adams back over his head for two before top-edging the last ball of the match past wicket-keeper Tom Hussey’s gloves to give his side a memorable victory.
Hussey (64) and Cal O’Hare (58 not out) had earlier batted beautifully for the Seagulls while Michael Giles (33) and Matt Bright (32) played key roles in the Demons’ run-chase. A rare hat-trick from Upper Beaconsfield (137) medium-pacer Kyle Gibbs was the highlight of a surprisingly competitive affair between the Maroons and WGCA ladder-leader Cardinia (6/155) at Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday. Gibbs joins Pakenham younggun Zac Chaplin on the unique honour-roll this season after claiming the wickets of Simon Parrott (26), Mark Andolfatto (2) and Brayden Browne (0). “It’s something you dream about as a bowler I suppose but it happened so quickly, I wasn’t even expecting to bowl,” a humble Gibbs said after his achievement. Gibbs’ late flurry, at the end of the 36th and start of the 38th overs, couldn’t stop the Bulls from posting a competitive total with their mercurial skipper Neil Barfuss (78 not out) once again leading the way. Barfuss and Parrott were joined by Daniel Strahan (28) as the three main contributors to the innings, while Gibbs (3/10) and Tommy Tyrrell (2/23) led an under-rated Maroons’ attack. The home-side started well in reply with Robert North (57) and Tyrrell (21) adding a 36-run stand to their debut century opening partnership against Tooradin last week. North’s wicket was the key one for the Bulls, who looked behind the eight-ball as the home side worked its way to 5/134.
