Nigel’s mission By BEN CAMERON THE wife of a late Pakenham police officer who dedicated his life to local road safety has spoken of her pride of attending a National Day of Remembrance service in the city on Monday. Sylvia Atkins will remember her sergeant husband Nigel as a champion of talking
down the toll who wanted to turn the entire Cardinia Shire into an official Family Zone. He was an officer for more than 35 years. Sylvia was joined by Nigel’s colleague and best friend, Senior Constable Mal Marsden of Cranbourne Police and his wife Sonia at the service which honoured the 159 brave officers who had
lost their lives in the line of duty since 1853. “It was a very magnificent day,” she said. “It was so honourable, it was wonderful to be there. “It was an honour to be there among the police and the dignitaries.” She said a strong sense of pride overwhelmed any
sadness felt as his name was read off a roll of the fallen, as wreaths were laid at the Victoria Police Memorial. Sgt Atkins was so committed to community safety he paid for the first 100 badges and stickers bearing the slogan “Cardinia Family Zone No Speeding” out of his own pocket in December, 2011. He had long believed that
“all motor vehicle accidents are preventable”. Sylvia said Nigel had a vision of billboards on the outskirts of Pakenham bearing the slogan. “He loved working in the Pakenham and Cardinia area,” she said. Mr Atkins took his own life on 7 March.
