Luckily a representative of the school attended the scene to confirm the snakes were not harmful.

Most of the reptiles were locked in a separate room within the portable and remained unharmed from smoke or heat.

Capt Davis said he was surprised at how many reptiles were saved because

Capt Davis said he felt devastated for the students that used the classroom frequently.

“It’s a bit of a shame because it was such a good thing for the kids,” he said.

“Now they will have to bring in another portable, but now the kids are without a reptile enclosure.

“If they didn’t have the alarm the damage would have been a lot worse.”

The reptile enclosure was created to give the students the opportunity to interact with animals that most students wouldn’t otherwise get the opportunity to learn about.

The remaining reptiles and snakes are safe in other science rooms and are now in the care of numerous students and their families.

POLICE are investigating a Lilydale school fire that saw more than 15 reptiles perish and some missing in the blaze.

A portable building caught on fire at Lilydale High School in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the school after an alarm set off at 12.30am once the roof began to collapse.

Built in 2002, the “totally ruined” reptile enclosure was home to more than 100 snakes, lizards, frogs and turtles.

The blaze was relieved within 20 minutes however emergency services said the portable is estimated to have suffered $80,000 in damage and will need to be replaced.

Some firefighters were hesitant to attend because they were unsure of how dangerous the snakes would be.

“Some were unsure of the snakes as they didn’t know if they were venomous or not,” Lilydale CFA Captain Warren Davis said.

The reptiles that were saved have been vet checked and only one had burns needing medication.

Eight fire trucks from Mount Evelyn, Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Bayswater attended the blaze.

On Thursday, police said while there were no signs of forced entry and the fire had not been deemed as suspicious, investigations were continuing.

After being notified by police, Lilydale CFA forced entry to find some reptiles had escaped their enclosures, others were found to have perished in the blaze.

It took more than two hours to rescue the reptiles once the scene was safe enough to clear.

Carer of the reptile enclosure Mark Whitby said the support from the community had been overwhelming.

“Some families have taken the reptiles home, Healesville Primary School took some as well,” Mr Whitby said.

“It’s just wonderful the support we have received from students, their

Respect makes its mark

MONBULK Sergeant Mark Knight is pleading with local residents to immediately call police if they notice any suspicious behaviour around their caravans.

Sgt Knight said police were investgating two attempted thefts of caravans in the Monbulk area.

He said residents needed to remain vigilant and ensure they had security measures protecting their caravans.

“Please ensure that they are locked, that there is a security device fitted and if you can afford it - get a wheel lock,” Sgt Knight said.

“We need the community to be on the look out for suspicious behavior and call triple -zero,” he said.

Pursuit nabs drink drive teen EMERALD police have charged an 18-year-old man after a pursuit on Sunday.

Acting Sergeant Brett Hore said a probationary driver was detected driving 96km/h in a 60km/h zone.

A pursuit followed, and the man was intercepted and blew a blood alcohol reading of .108.

He was charged in relation to evading police, driving at dangerous speeds and exceeding .05.

Inspiro Population Health Team leader Narelle Algie said early intervention with young people was important to prevent a society full of violence.

“Statistically in the outer region, Yarra Ranges has the third highest reported incidents of domestic

violence and that is really quite concerning,” she said.

“That could be for a number of reasons, one being that people now feel comfortable to report the violence to police or two there has actually been an increase in violence.”

Eastern Health promotion co-ordinator Julia Blackburn said football clubs were in a key position within the community to role model respectful behaviour and ensure they were family friendly and inclusive.

“By volunteering to participate in this program, Mount Evelyn Junior Football Club is showing that they want to be key players in the community to promote equality between men and women,” she said.

Ms Blackburn also said the program also promoted respect among players, parents and spectators.

Beacon of memory for lost mates

By REBECCA BILLS HE WAS one of the last World War II volunteers and a man who devoted an enormous amount of time in helping others.

At 91 years of age, ex-Mount Evelyn resident Leonard Polkinghorne and OAM recipient passed away peacefully on Sunday 29 June in Wantirna.

Mr Polkinghorne was born on 6 May 1923 at Woods Point, Victoria. His father was a miner but when the gold ran out the family left Woods Point and lived a fairly nomadic existence as his father pursued work.

It was in 1927 that the family settled in Mount Evelyn with his father obtaining a job at Silvan Dam while Mr Polkinghorne and his siblings attended the Mount Evelyn State School.

During World War II, Mr Polkinghorne enlisted in the army and was allotted to the 2/17th Anti-Aircraft Battery in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and was among the soldiers responsible for protecting the area from enemy aircraft.

“He was lucky in a way because many of those who enlisted around the same time ended up as prisoners of war to the Japanese,” Mr McAleer said.

“In fact at one time Len tried to transfer to his cousin’s unit but was unsuccessful and in the end talked his cousin into coming into his section - the unit he tried to go to was eventually sent to Malaya and were nearly all captured.

“In 1942 he witnesses the ship the Mac Dui being sunk by the Japanese bombers in the harbour and would later go on to see action in Milne Bay, Buna and some of the islands in the Pacific.”

Mr McAleer said Mr Polkinghorne’s name appears on the Mount Evelyn Honour Board, the Shire of Lillydale World War II Honour Board and was one of the last Mount Evelyn World War II volunteers.

Mr Polkinghorne told the Mail in 2012 that he and his family relocated to Ringwood when he returned from war to find work and he found himself heavily involved in the Ringwood RSL. Mr Polkinghorne was a life member of the League of Australia, became a life member of the RSL in 2001, was inducted into the RSL Hall of Fame in 2007 and became an OAM recipient in 2008.

He is survived by his wife Thelma, children Lynette, Helen, Bill, Noel, Doug, Rod and Greg as well as his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A service to celebrate the life of Mr Polkinghorne was held on Friday 4 July at William Matthews Funeral Home, Lilydale.

Couple face burglary charges POLICE have charged a man and woman from Queensland after a burglary at the Coldstream Airfield.

The couple, both in their thirties, and staying at an address in the Dandenong Ranges, broke into a shed at the airfield and stole $240 worth of alcohol.

They then travelled to a Lilydale petrol station close to the Lilydale police station where they argued because they couldn’t afford to pay for their fuel.

Leading Senior Constable Stuart Firth said their argument got the attention of nearby police who noticed their 18-month-old daughter in the back seat next to the alcohol. They were arrested and charged with burglary and theft and bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 1 October 2014.

Children’s Services were also called and removed the child from their care on the next day.

A siege followed, where the man locked himself in his car and threatened self-harm. It was peacefully resolved and the man was charged with additional theft offences.

With a focus on equality and respect going hand-in-hand, the club is taking part in the You&I initiative to ensure that the club’s younger generation respects women in all areas of life.

You&I is a collaborative campaign between Yarra Valley Community Health and Inspiro, and supported by Yarra Ranges Council and AFL Country Victoria to promote equal and respectful relationships between men and women.

Mount Evelyn Junior Football Club president Andy Gibbons said after committee members attended the You&I seminar last year they thought it would be an excellent program to include their under 13, 14 and 16 members in.

“I think at a footy club, being realistic, they are dominated by males and even though we are pushing for as many girls as we can, that’s just the way it is,” he said.

“If we can ensure all members respect women who are at a footy club and steer away from comments like “what would she know, she’s just a woman” would be a really positive thing.

“We are hoping that if we can get it across to the boys to respect and appreciate women, even if it’s just one attitude we have changed, it would be successful.”

The problem isn’t minor

BEING aware of the menace and rapid spread of Indian Myna birds from suburbia to rural areas, I have been concerned about their impact on our native birds and wildlife and am pleased to assist in doing something about it.

The Indian Myna is a huge threat to our beautiful native birds that we love so much.

I took the initiative to help reduce the impact of these birds locally and donated two Indian Myna bird traps to the Mt Toolebewong Landcare group for community use and to assist the group in its efforts.

Landcare groups across the region have been fighting hard to minimise the damage the birds wreak.

I certainly commend Mt Toolebewong Landcare for its determination in this respect and encourage anyone who wants to join the cause to contact the group and arrange to borrow a trap - you can also take the opportunity to join Landcare!

Indian Myna birds have had a devastating effect on our local wildlife.

This aggressive species is known to displace native birds, killing their nestling and eggs thus stopping the breeding of native birds.

The birds have become very well adapted to urban living and have learnt trap avoidance behaviour well.

Birds can be found across suburban and semi-rural areas and along major roadways.

They will roost in tree hollows, in building crevices and under bridges.

Methods have been trialled in the past and it appears that the best way of capture is by trapping.

It is useful to keep a calling bird in the containment chamber of the trap to call other mynas into the cage.

Birds are to be provided shelter, either shade or a cover, during harsh weather conditions.

Such traps should only be placed on private property where minimal people and animal contact occurs.

They start earlier than native birds and form breeding pairs from September to March, they can raise multiple clutches, generally raising four to five chicks per clutch.

I know that the birds have advanced as far as Badger Creek and with Healesville in their sights I want to alert you all to their encroachment.

Although it will be almost impossible to completely eradicate these pests, we can all work together to address this very serious environmental threat.

By KATH GANNAWAY THE Wilderness Society is calling on the federal and state environment ministers to do more to save the Leadbeater’s possum from extinction.

Delivering a 4000-signature petition to Federal Minister Greg Hunt on 1 July, the Wilderness Society called on the minister to use federal powers to suspend logging in the central highlands habitat of the possum.

Their renewed calls follow the recent release of The Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 by CSIRO Publishing where the authors John Woinarski, Andrew Burbidge and Peter

Smith to step up.

“As environment minister, his primary role should be to advocate for the suspension of logging the habitat to ensure the species is not lost forever,” he said.

“Unfortunately, since he now sits under the portfolio of (Agriculture Minister) Peter Walsh, he does not have as much clout, or the powers, to curb the extinction trajectory of the possum,” he said.

Minister Smith has defended his and his government’s response to the possum’s plight, saying they had in April accepted in full the 13 recommendations of the Leadbeater’s Possum

Advisory Group and committed to investing $11 million for their implementation.

He said the recommendations included timber harvest exclusion zones in a 200-metre radius around each site where Leadbeater’s possum are detected, harvesting exclusion zones within 100 metres of modelled old growth ash forest, retention harvesting in 50 per cent of the areas of ash harvested within the Leadbeater’s possum range, starting this month, and postponement of harvesting for two years in areas that have a high probability of being occupied by Leadbeater’s possum to identify colonies.

Ladies in the pink to lift spirits in Yarra Junction for the Women’s Wellbeing Festival in October - and they are looking for some help.

The very nature of their group means that while they have more than 30 people on their books, only a handful are physically able to help.

“We’re looking for like-minded women for hands-on support,” said Judith, who explained that there are many opportunities to help out.

The festival will be a dynamic event around women’s health and wellbeing which will raise funds and raise awareness of health issues and what services are available.

“People lead such busy lives, and that is why we say this is something where they can give as little or as much time as they have available,” Judith said.

“They can come just for the fund-raiser on the day, put their name down for an hour or so helping out at the house or just spend some time driving people to appointments.”

Since 2008, the Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink Women’s Cancer Support Group has played that very important supporting role.

“It can cost over $40 to get transport to an appointment at Maroondah Hospital, so to have someone able to say, ‘I can drive you’ is an enormous financial relief, but can also be a great emotional support,” said Judith McGrath, who is a cancer survivor and founding member of the group.

The group also runs Heather’s Haven, providing free respite care in the Yarra Valley in conjunction with the Cancer Council Holiday Program.

Friends over 10 year mark

By JESSE GRAHAM WHEN the Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum group formed in 2004, around half a dozen people were at the helm of the project.

Today, the group has a mailing list of over 600, and group member Steve Meacher said the group’s work was far from over.

“It’s good for the group to have survived 10 years, and grown as much as it has to achieve quite a lot,” he said.

“But we’re still seeing our favourite possum in quite a lot of trouble.”

On Thursday 3 July, the group marked 10 years since its incorporation in 2004, though actual celebrations are planned for later in the year.

Mr Meacher said the group would celebrate its 10th birthday on the 10th day of the 10th month.

He said that when Sarah Blair started the group originally, there was not much awareness of the animal, which had been Victoria’s faunal emblem since 1971 - and previously thought extinct.

One of the big achievements of the group, according to Mr Meacher, has been raising the profile of the animal and generating awareness of the animal’s dwindling numbers.

“The Leadbeater’s possum has never needed friends more than it does now,” he said.

The Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum group has campaigned for the survival of the possum in the central highlands area around Toolangi - the only remaining habitat for the possum species.

Mr Meacher said the number of possums left in the central highlands sat around 1500, while the other species of the animal residing in Yellingbo was thought to have a population of around 40.

Much of the Leadbeater’s possum habitat was devastated during the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, and the group has campaigned against logging in the area to try and protect remaining colonies.

The logging industry, however, has argued that it is avoiding harm to the animal, with recently-implemented changes to practices and exclusion zones brought in as a result of a Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group (LPAG) report.

In a book released by CSIRO Publishing, The Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012, the leadbeater’s possum is now listed as critically endangered.

Hospital’s heartbeat THE Yarra Valley community is being treated with contempt in relation to the hospital in Healesville by the State Government.

In summary, the Save the Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) is wanting to see a totally independent review of what services and resources are in the best interests of the local community.

This community has spoken and has now raised the funds required, yet is being stymied because the Minister of Health will not release the last three years of financial data from Healesville Hospital, Yarra Valley Community Health and Monda Lodge as he had promised.

What is being hidden here?

Why all the secrecy?

The community is being bombarded with a media blitz from the State Government at taxpayers’ expense with letters and newsletters suggesting that all is well.

Sadly, this makes a number of assertions that are misrepresentations at best and which cut across the real interests of the local community, many of whom are understandably confused about where the truth lies.

Despite repeated efforts by SHHAG there has been no genuine consultation about anything important - the group has been specifically advised by Alan Lilly that the consultation will be into minor issues, not anything that we would consider meaningful such as how service planning would work, what the development will in-

Shooters under fire IT was with no great surprise when I read this week’s letters in your newspaper to see if you would print a fair and balanced take on firearm laws, instead I find another emotive story of “outrage”.

Please tell me why you could not print a reasonable reply to Ms Murphy (Hunting Laws - Grey Areas, Mail, 24 June 2014).

Why do you always call the people shooting around Warby/Millgrove “hunters” when clearly the people doing this are either carrying out feral pest control who will follow the set out guidelines or if unauthorized “poachers”.

Actually, don’t bother as I already know the answer.

Your agenda is clear, no firearms, period, even for the law abiding.

Well let’s say your will is imposed upon shooters and all firearms are banned and handed in, do you think there will be no firearms left, as I’m sure the criminals will hand back their weapons to make it a safer place for all of us to live and all the stray projectiles will magically do no harm to the innocent ever again.

Bid fails to cut rates

By JESSE GRAHAM TWO Yarra Ranges councillors have failed in an 11th hour bid to lower rate rises to bring them in line with inflation.

The move came at the council’s 24 June meeting at which councillors were considering the budget for the coming financial year.

However, other councillors lambasted their colleagues for jeopardising the shire’s infrastructure development and for making the comments at the last minute.

Councillors Andy Witlox and Len Cox both hesitated to support the budget for the coming year because of the rising cost of living, particularly in the aftermath of a harsh Federal budget.

Cr Cox said the government was “jacking up charges across the board

to people who can’t afford it”, and that rising council rates would also impact these people.

“We can’t control what the two other levels of government do, but we can control what we do,” he said.

Cr Witlox agreed with Cr Cox and both of the councillors agreed that council rate rises should be at the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate, which is currently 2.9 per cent.

“I really believe that’s what we should be doing for next year and for the next two years - it’s about 2 per cent less than what we’re looking at,” Cr Cox. “That’s about $2 million for the year - I have no doubt that we can reduce our spending by that much.”

However, this view was contested by other councillors who said that changing rate rises from the current steady rise of

4.8 per cent each year would affect infrastructure.

Jason Callanan said that infrastructure in the shire would be “severely affected” by reducing rate rises, while Jim Child said the rate rises allowed for extensive capital works to take place.

Terry Avery backed Cr Callanan and Cr Child, and said that rate rises were part of the council’s plan.

“We have to stick to the plan,” he said. “It’s not always pretty, but we have to stick to it.”

Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said at the meeting that she was frustrated by the last-minute discussion.

“We started these discussions in November last year - I remember having a fairly strong voice on this issue at the time,” she said.

“If these are the feelings around the

table, they (should be) heard when we start next time.

“To raise these issues after this huge body of work has been completed is really disappointing.”

Cr McAllister said that, while she does support lower rate rises, it would be impossible to change the details of the budget six days out from the end of the financial year.

All levels of government are required to pass their budget for the coming financial year before 30 June of the previous financial year to ensure there is money allocated to running the government.

The Yarra Ranges Council budget, along with the council’s Long Term Financial Plan and Council Plan 20132017 (2014 Update) was ultimately adopted by a majority vote.

By JODIE SYMONDS POLICE are investigating a Lilydale school fire that saw more than 15 reptiles perish and some missing in the blaze.

A portable building caught on fire at Lilydale High School in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the school after an alarm set off at 12.30am once the roof began to collapse.

Built in 2002, the “totally ruined” reptile enclosure was home to more than 100 snakes, lizards, frogs and turtles.

The blaze was relieved within 20 minutes however emergency services said the portable is estimated to have suffered $80,000 in damage and will need to be replaced.

Some firefighters were hesitant to attend because they were unsure of how dangerous the snakes would be.

“Some were unsure of the snakes as they didn’t know if they were venomous or not,” Lilydale CFA Captain Warren Davis said.

The reptiles that were saved have been vet checked and only one had burns needing medication.

Eight fire trucks from Mount Evelyn, Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Bayswater attended the blaze.

On Thursday, police said while there were no signs of forced entry and the fire had not been deemed as suspicious, investigations were continuing.

The remaining reptiles and snakes are safe in other science rooms and are in the care of numerous students and their families.

THE new Seville Shopping Centre opened last week with Woolworth’s supermarket the main drawcard for shoppers.

Students from Seville Primary School took part in the official opening of the supermarket on Tuesday evening, 1 July, singing the National Anthem ahead of the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony to declare the store open.

The celebrations continued on Wednesday with kids’ activities, including a visit by Smurfette, who couldn’t stop

smiling, and a sparkling new store for parents to explore.

“The soft opening on the Tuesday night was a ‘thank you’ to all the workers who have done such a marvellous job in the store and for their families to have a really good look at the shops,” Woolworths store manager Lee Smith said.

The supermarket employs 86 people and Ms Smith is one of 83 of those who live within 10 kilometres of the store.

She said one of the main comments is just how big and open the store is.

Cycle laws get a new view

By JESSE GRAHAM CYCLING laws are being reviewed by the government and all road users and residents are being asked to take part in a state-wide survey and to have their say.

The survey, which is run by VicRoads, asks for public opinion on current cycling-related road rules and legislation, and any issues that arise from the current cycling laws.

Bicycle lanes and motor-vehicle behaviours in regards to cyclists are discussed, as well as a section that lists statements and asks users whether the statement is a law and whether it should be a law.

Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said that the laws regarding bikes and the road are often misunderstood, or not known at all.

“We know cyclists and drivers often don’t see eye-to-eye and there have been a number of incidents where cars and bikes come into conflict because people are not sure who is in the right,” he said.

“Cycling is becoming increasingly popular, so we need to make sure that when cyclists use our roads, they are

safe and do not put themselves or others at risk.”

Mr Mulder said that the survey would assess where the gaps in knowledge of the law were, and hear about issues that could be addressed by law changes.

VicRoads will use the results from the public survey, research, crash statistics and feedback from stakeholders into account for any potential law changes.

Bicycle Network CEO Craig Richards said that it was vital for bike riders to have their say on the current road laws.

He encouraged all riders to have a say in the survey, which he hoped would encourage more people to take up bike riding.

The survey and law review comes as a result of the Victorian Road Safety Action Plan and the Cycling into the Future 2013-2023 document.

The survey, which is open until 27 July, takes about 30 minutes to complete, and progress can be saved at any time so it can be completed later.

Driving demand for new safety in driver’s seat SEATBELTS became compulsory in Victoria in 1970.

It was revolutionary then but for decades it’s been a standard, life-saving feature in cars.

The Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) current campaign promoting auto emergency braking (AEB) in cars is a bit more high-tech, but has the same potential.

AEB automatically applies the brakes when a collision is imminent and is already a standard feature on more than 50 car models available in Victorian showrooms.

It has the potential to significantly reduce the number and severity of rear-end collisions, ultimately reducing road trauma in the Victorian community.

“The new TAC campaign aims to drive consumer demand for the technology in the same way earlier campaigns drove a sharp increase in the uptake of safety features like curtain

The TAC is expecting a sharp rise in demand for AEB technology. airbags and electronic stability control (ESC),” Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said.

As part of the road safety strategy, the TAC campaign encourages Victo-

rians to visit howsafeisyourcar.com.au and consider purchasing a vehicle fitted with technology that can save lives and AEB is just one of these features that car buyers should consider.

AEB typically uses sensors, radar, laser or cameras to scan the road ahead for risks and detect potential collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians or hazards and is an optional feature in cars including the Ford Focus and the Mazda 3.

Most AEB systems will provide an initial warning to the driver when it senses an imminent crash and, if the driver does not respond, AEB will intervene and apply braking.

“Rear end collisions account for about 16 per cent of all injury crashes and this technology could significantly reduce the likelihood of these crashes or reduce impact speeds,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

“Based on past experiences, the TAC’s campaign to highlight the lifesaving potential of AEB is expected to result in a sharp rise in demand for this technology and it is anticipated that demand will in time lead to a situation where AEB becomes a standard

feature on almost every vehicle on the market.

“Through this AEB campaign, we are once again leading the rest of the country in promoting life-saving vehicle-safety technology,” Mr RichPhillips said.

AEB systems fall into three main categories, with some vehicles featuring a combination of systems: - Low speed systems are designed for urban environments where vehicle collisions generally occur at low speeds. The systems generally scan for other vehicles at close range; - Higher speed systems typically use long-range radar to scan up to 200 metres ahead of a vehicle and can be effective in higher speed environments; and - Pedestrian systems are specifically designed to detect the characteristics of pedestrians and cyclists, often using a combination of camera and radar.

Engine fires LOCAL blues band The Engine Room will be firing on all cylinders in July, playing shows in Healesville and Warburton.

The band was formed in 2010 and plays a mix of swing, shuffle and rockin’ blues.

The Engine Room comprises Richie Langford and Aaron Burton on guitar and vocals,

Alan Gibson, sax and harmonica, Jono Zwart on bass and vocals and the ever-reliable Paul Spears on drums.

Langford said the band had a busy start to the year, including an appearance opening for James Reyne at the Panton Hill CFA Ash Wednesday memorial concert and time in the studio

recording its second CD. The band will continue to gain traction with gigs in Healesville at the Terminus Hotel on Sunday 13 July at 2pm and at The Grand Hotel on Saturday 19 July at 9pm.

It will be in Warburton the next day from 2pm at Wild Thyme Cafe.

And it’s one for the pot IT IS cosies galore at Warratina Lavender Farm to help raise funds for cancer research.

Created by local knitters, colourful tea cosies are adorning Warratina to help raise $10,000 for the Australian Cancer Council in its annual Tea Cosy Competition and exhibition.

A total of $250 is up for grabs for the winning tea cosy as nominated by the judging panel with the monies raised from the sale of tea cosies at the exhibition going to the Australia Cancer Council.

Owner Annemarie Manders said the exhibition was just one of the many exhibitions Warratina held to give back to the community.

“It gives me a good feeling knowing that what we are doing here is benefitting others,” she said.

“This is one way that I can give back and everybody loves being able to view the tea cosies and know that their purchases are going to a good cause.”

Transformers: Age Of Extinction Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer Rated M IT took four attempts but director Michael Bay has finally made a decent Transformers movie.

Three years after the war with the Decepticons in Chicago, all Transformers (including their heroic leader Optimus Prime) are now outlawed and hunted by the government, and human scientists are even creating artificial Transformers of their own.

Story-wise, Age Of Extinction is a convoluted mess of poorly-explained villains and conflicts, limited suspense and dumb humour.

Much of the dialogue and acting is lacklustre, although Mark Wahlberg remains a solid action lead.

However, Age Of Extinction shows that Bay is slowly learning from his mistakes.

The stereotypes and annoying characters are

kept to a minimum and Bay is no longer fawning over the US Army.

The action is also the coolest it’s ever been in this franchise and the robot characters are amusing. Stanley Tucci is enjoyably hammy as a greedy inventor and Kelsey Grammer goes for broke with an intimidating performance as the main human antagonist.

This is a dumb action movie that you can safely turn off your brain to enjoy.

The first three Transformers movies (especially Transfomers 2) were obnoxious, racist abominations, but Age Of Extinction, while badly-written and kind of hollow, is actionpacked and inoffensive.

Quite simply, it gets the job done.

But if you want a smart movie with giant creatures fighting each other, watch Godzilla or rent Pacific Rim. - Seth Hynes

Letters Funds firm up I WELCOME the Commonwealth Government’s decision to provide $375,000 funding for the National Centre for Farmer Health and in so doing demonstrating its recognition of the value of the centre to farming families (like my own) not just throughout Victoria, but nation-wide.

This is something Victoria has long recognised and appreciated.

Victoria proposed a sustainable on-going funding solution to the former Commonwealth Government but then Health Minister Tanya Plibersek rejected this out of hand.

It is good to see the new Commonwealth Government is not so dismissive of the particular health challenges of farming families.

Victoria is also providing a further $250,000 to the centre this year.

Victoria’s offer of $250,000 a year in recurrent funding for the centre, on the basis of a 1:2 cost share arrangement with the Commonwealth, remains on the table and our discussions with the Commonwealth to seek a longer term, sustainable funding arrangement for the centre will continue.

Cutting edge I AM rarely moved to anger by the front page of the Mail (No More On Edge, 1 July 2014) but here goes.

I have been a resident of Warburton for more than 10 years.

During the whole of this time I have heard the promises, the false starts and the empty rhetoric concerning the development of the Edgewater Resort.

We have a lovely building next to the tennis courts that I have never once seen open since it was refurbished. This is the Edgewater office building.

We live in a beautiful town that is a major tourist attraction and right in the middle of this town is an historic and iconic building that lays abandoned and semi derelict asking to be vandalised and covered in graffiti through its lack of upkeep.

If an average resident of Warburton let their grass grow knee high and looked through their broken windows at the cyclone fencing surrounding them they would receive an infringement notice from the council.

Does anyone really think that repairing the ground floor broken windows and painting the metal frames is an indication of commitment to the work when the rest of the building lays dormant and essentially derelict?

This boutique side of the valley is on the move and if our local government and council are serious about commitment to Warburton and want to be part of the vanguard of vibrancy, employment and leadership that will shape the future of this town then please stop procrastinating and start acting.

In my cynicism I know that none of us poor rate paying mortals will ever get an answer but my message back to council and the Crockett group is this - start it, sell it, or at the very least tell the truth and then get out of the way.

How absurd to quote a completion date of 23 December 2016 when we don’t even have a start date. Get on with it!

Not so clever I AM always very eager to read the local views presented in your paper but recent issues of ‘Letters’ contain contributions from a certain figure who lives far from our mountains but spouts forth the most incoherent nonsense I have seen in 37 years of reading the Mail.

Clever Culture (Mail, 1 July 2014) was just so silly that I felt compelled to complain, despite always being rather reluctant to stick my head up regarding local affairs.

‘Letters’ is an invaluable forum for serious local debate, serious opinions, interesting observations and so forth but, while we might live on or near hills I’m sure most of us don’t want to see this valuable forum filled with nonsense that makes us all look like a lot of hillbillies to outsiders.

Perhaps this is real agenda of our irritating friend from ‘down the line’ who describes us by a term seemingly of his own composition: ‘chaff-head-celeb-set’.

Google was only able to inform me that ‘chaff head’ is “a Christian term for someone who is worldly minded or prone to invest in and pursue meaningless and often ungodly things”.

Let’s have no more of this space-wasting gobbledygook (Christian or otherwise motivated) in our precious paper, please.

Battles fade in the fog of war YVMDFNL Wrap Round 12 EXTREMELY wet and foggy conditions were the order of the day in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football and Netball League.

Emerald accounted for Woori Yallock in very heavy conditions and Olinda needed miner’s helmets to be able to see through the fog.

Yarra Junction got the scalp of Alexandra over the Divide and Thornton are in the top five with a strong performance over Yea. There is only one Division One game next Saturday, 12 July - Upwey Tecoma v Belgrave - while the remainder of Division One have a bye week.

The third quarter saw Woori get plenty of chances but it was astray booting just five behinds while Emerald only scored 1.4 for the term but it still saw it stretch its lead to 17 points at the last break and another upset was in the making.

Woori had only scored one goal up to three quarter time but it was still in the game and it threw its all into it in the last and started hitting the scoreboard where it counted as it clawed its way closer.

It scored 3.2 for the term but Emerald was able to manage one goal which was just enough as it was able to cling on to the lead until the final siren to claim its second huge scalp for the season.

Division I Seniors Healesville 16.3 (109) d Warburton Millgrove 5.10 (40) WARBURTON pulled off an upset win against Upwey last week and would have gone into this game confident.

However, that confidence was shot down early as Healesville took control in the first quarter racing to a 23 point lead and never letting Warby into the game.

Healesville increased its lead to 39 points by half time and then put the game beyond doubt in the third with a terrific seven goal term where it ran Warby off its feet and by the last change the lead had blown out to 69 points.

The last quarter saw the game fizzle out a bit as both sides only booted one major but this game belonged to Healesville from the very first bounce.

Division I A Grade Netball Warburton-Millgrove 39 d Healesville 35 THIS was a ripper game and right in the balance deep into the last quarter.

Warby did lead at the first three changes but it was by just two goals at each of those breaks as it just couldn’t shake Healesville off.

The last quarter was a good battle but it was Warby that was able to eventually grab just a little breathing space and was able to hold onto its narrow lead to win by four goals in what was a great battle.

Woori Yallock 44 d Emerald 36 THIS was the two bottom sides pitted against each other with Woori on two wins and Emerald on one so its pride was on the line. Woori got the jump early and went to a six goal lead at the first break and that really was the quarter that ultimately won the game for Woori as Emerald did match it for the remainder of the game.

Emerald did get to within four goals by three quarter time but once again Woori pulled away to win by eight goals and record its third victory.

It has now beaten Upwey when it sat top of the ladder and this week Woori Yallock in a thriller by just three points.

The game didn’t start to well for Emerald as it didn’t score in the first quarter but Woori didn’t make it pay the other way as it booted 1.4.

In the second term Emerald got momentum and in the quarter it scored 4.2 to just four behinds and Emerald grabbed a two-goal lead at the long break.

Champion Ron’s a Life Member

By KATH GANNAWAY “I HAVE never seen the grounds better in winter in all my life,” according to its newest Life Member, Ron Hanson, who was high praise for the Warburton Golf Club grounds team.

Mr Hanson has spent almost all his life playing golf and contributing in a range of roles to the Warburton Golf Club.

One of those roles was as superintendant looking after the course.

He became a member when he was 12 years old. The course was then nine-holes and there was a strong junior membership of about 20 keen, young kids like himself.

Golf became a passion, a career and a community service, all of which were recognised in the presentation of his life membership by club member Alan Johnston.

He started working for the Warburton Golf Club in 1965 and handled the role of superintendent for almost 20 years. Many of the beautification projects around the course came from his expertise as a landscaper.

His contributions included playing pennant golf for the club, running a junior clinic to encourage young players to the club, as well as serving in a number of roles on the committee.

“Ron’s achievements at a club level are well documented on the honour

boards, and I would suggest there would not have been any representative of the club who was more modest, or well respected by other clubs than Ron,” Mr Johnston said.

He said Mr Hanson was a champion sportsman who claimed a number of club championships and represented the club at Country Week competitions for many years.

“You don’t get life membership just for being here for 52 years,” he said.

“He is a true champion and the sort of person people value around the place.”

Mr Hanson accepted the life membership, saying it was a great honour.

“I feel really humbled to be associ-

ated with so many of the club people who are up there on the board of life members,” he said.

“To be associated with the same honour as someone like Dick Leith,

who has been like a father figure to me, is mind boggling,” he said.

Mr Leith was to present the life membership medal, but was unable to attend due to illness.

Books for basketballs

By JARROD POTTER TRADING Avonsleigh for Asia, Monash University basketball player Andrew Harmer has swapped the books for basketballs as part of an international tournament.

The 23-year-old is part of Team Monash which is taking on the rest of the world at the Asia Pacific University Men’s Basketball Challenge in South Korea.

Knocking off perennial rivals Melbourne University 62-57 in last season’s Australian University Games grand final earned Harmer and his Monash team mates a ticket to the international tournament.

“Bit of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a player like me and the rest of the team as well,” Harmer said before he left.

“Probably wouldn’t have got the chance to represent Australia at any level outside of this, so it’s pretty exciting and all the boys are really excited for the trip.”

Facing university teams from around the world - including the USA, China, Japan and four from Korea - Team Monash is representing Australia and Harmer, donning the Monash jersey for the last time, wants to finish on a high note.

“We’re 12 deep and we’ve won convincingly the last two years in Australia, but it’s really hard to tell as it’s the same for the other countries,” Harmer said.

“It’s not the best 10 players they’ve got at uni, they’re the players that won their competi-

tion - so it’s hard to tell what the standard will be, but it will be international standard.

“I just want to represent Monash and Australia to the best of our abilities and get as many wins as we can.”

As a prominent shootingguard, Harmer hoped to drill his threes and lead the team, having served as captain at both of the recent University Games campaigns.

“I scored quite well - one of the top scorers in the team each game and I was the captain of the team those two years,” Harmer said.

“Probably enjoyed the second win more - going back to back.

“They were both really close grand finals against Melbourne University, which is a really good rivalry, and they came down to the last minute.”

After the tournament, basketball will take a backseat for Harmer because he’s decided to not pursue another season of Big V basketball with Sherbrooke.

However, he admitted there’s enough allure there to drag him back on court in future.

“The last two years I’ve been captain of Sherbrooke’s youth championship men but I haven’t been playing this year - not sure when I’ll go back as I am getting settled,” Harmer said.

“I want to get a job lined up after finishing uni and once I’m settled into that I might come back.”
