Terry’s newest medal By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH Anzac Day around the corner, Wodonga veteran Terrance Hampstead received a very welcome surprise when he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for decades of service to the Wodonga RSL Sub-Branch. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “For 30 years with the RSL on the committee I worked with seven presidents. It’s phenomenal to have it.” The Meritorious Service Medal was first awarded in 1982 when the National Executive of the RSL agreed to the concept as an honour over and above Life Membership. It can only be awarded to those already holding Life Membership, those who have had 30 years’ continuous membership and those who have given 25 years of outstanding service. Mr Hampstead has served as vice-president of the Wodonga RSL Sub-Branch for 17 years and has actively been involved with the veteran community, providing welfare support to returned service personnel, and Legacy visits as a welfare officer. He has served as the RSL funeral service member, provided continual support to the Hume Veterans Information Centre and the club on com-

His work has been purely voluntary and his commitment and support to the RSL club and veteran community come highly regarded. Mr Hampstead joined the army on 27 February 1959 and left on 26 February 1980. “I did two tours of Vietnam, the first tour was ’67-’68, then again in ’70-’71,” he said. “’70-’71 was the worst tour. I had a large armoured personnel carrier blown from underneath me. I found out when I got home I had a fractured vertebra on the top of my neck. Continued on page 5
