Easter treat
FAMILIES across Hobsons Bay are getting ready to enjoy Easter festivities this weekend with youngsters already counting down the days until everyone’s beloved bunny arrives and delivers tasty chocolate treats. And little Matilda is no exception. Like most toddlers she has enjoyed a sneaky treat or two this week and is looking forward to waking up on Sunday morning to house filled with chocolate. 118398 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

MORE than 130 penalty notices were issued to Hobsons Bay residents as part of a summer-long operation that targeted crime and anti-social behaviour at Altona and Williamstown beaches. Operation Foreshore began in December last year and ended last month with police issuing 137 notices for a range of public order offences including possessing alcohol in a prohibited area, drunk in a public place, using indecent language, behaving in a riotous manner and various traffic offences. Police also charged a further 41 people with offences including theft, assault, traffic offences and a range of other offences, targeting anti social behaviour. Hobsons Bay Inspector Richard Paterson said overall police were pleased with behaviour over summer, particularly as the area experiences an influx of visitors during this period. “Many people come to experience all that Hobsons Bay has to offer during the warmer months. We established the Summer Policing
Team to focus on crime and public order issues during this period,” he said. “Part of their focus was to engage with traders and the general public about the visible police presence and also to conduct regular foot patrols on beaches with a focus on speaking to them about the importance of not leaving their belongings unattended. “We received positive feedback from the local community- people like to see police patrolling and making the beaches safer.” On one day of the operation, a staggering 10 mobile phones were stolen from underneath the Altona pier within 30 minutes - one of the first summer offences. Statistics revealed that as the heat soared so did the offences, with stolen property reports filed each day. Mobile phone, bags, wallets and credit cards were among the most popular items targeted by thieves. Sergeant Dean Howard from Williamstown police station said the high-level of co-operation with shop-keepers and locals also helped reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
