Youth plan leads

LEADWEST has launched a plan to improve the high level of youth unemployment and education retention rates in the West.

According to a new study Brotherhood of St Laurence study, the North-West and West of Melbourne have the highest rates of unemployment among people aged 15 to 24 in the metropolitan area.

The rate of youth unemployment in the North-west is 14.8 per cent and 13.6 per cent in the West.

To help address the problem, LeadWest has announced plans to work with social researcher Dr Ruth Morton on a project which will investigate “youth engagement in and disengagement from education and training” in the West compared to the rest of Melbourne and Victoria.

LeadWest CEO Craig Rowley said research had identified the “paramount importance” of developing a strong skills base in the region, as outlined in the Western Agenda plan.

“One of the regional goals set out in the Western Agenda is to achieve higher school retention rates and also shift the achievement curve in Melbourne’s West,” Mr Rowley said.

“Dr Morton will also provide LeadWest with a review of existing research and evidence around youth engagement and transitions.

“This will clarify which policy developments are likely to have the most impact in improving youth engagement levels in Melbourne’s west.”

Figures from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations show the rate of full-time unemployment among teenagers looking for work in the West was 39 per cent in 2013.

This was higher than the national average of 25 per cent.

A report into a Brotherhood of St Laurence 2012 youth employment project, based in Caroline Springs, said the program attracted “a substantial number of 15-year-old and 16-year-old disengaged learners”.

Western Suburbs youth worker Les Twentyman said he had recently received several calls from parents concerned about their teenagers dealing or using methamphetamines after losing jobs.

“Now with all the job losses at Ford, Toyota and Qantas, lots of kids think, ‘Oh yeah, even if I go to school, I’m never going to get a job’,” he said.

THE cards fell the right way for a Wyndham Vale man who took home $100,000 in cash and prizes in a poker tournament recently.

Matthew Kozole’s family was doing it tough just before the win after his mother passed away last September. He said he felt like she was watching over him when he knocked out over 500 other poker players to win the top prize in The Main Event poker tournament held at Crown Casino at the beginning of this month. WHEN Kaylene Skinner turned 50 she received a letter that ultimately saved her life.

The Newport resident accepted an invitation to attend a free breast screening that arrived by post after her 50th birthday. The scan came back clear.

Two years later she received the same letter and went along, but this time was asked back for more testing.

After a day of testing that included an ultrasound and a biopsy it was confirmed she had early stages of breast cancer.

Ms Skinner had surgery on

15 November 2012 and has been cancer free for 15 months.

“It all happened fairly quickly once it was all diagnosed and I’m fit and healthy again,” she said.

She said the cancer was only picked up through a routine breast screen.

“If I hadn’t of gone just on a normal routine it wouldn’t have been found and I could have been worse off years down the track,” Ms Skinner said.

The 54-year-old encouraged women, especially those aged over 50, to have the test.

Car lock-ins blow out

By NICOLE VALICEK AMBULANCE Victoria paramedics are disappointed many parents are ignoring the dangers of leaving children unattended in cars.

Paramedics were called to 620 cases of people locked in cars in the five months September 2013 to January 2014.

Of those cases, 99 people needed treatment by paramedics, with 24 taken to hospital, eight of those came from the Hobsons Bay area.

The highest number occurred in Altona North where three incidents

were recorded, with two incidents each in Newport and Altona, and one in Williamstown.

Almost two thirds of the 620 Triple-zero calls reporting someone locked in a car involved a child aged under 13 years.

Surprisingly, it’s estimated one third of calls involved an adult locked in a car. These include the elderly and people with conditions which prevent them letting themselves out of the car.

Although summer is over, Ambulance Victoria Group Manager Brett

Drummond warns people not to be complacent about safety in vehicles.

“It doesn’t have to be a scorching hot day for the car to quickly heat up,” he said. “Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29 degree Celsius day the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes.”

Mr Drummond said with all of the media coverage and advertising over summer warning about the dangers of leaving children in cars, the number of calls to people locked

in a car in the last five months was disappointing.

“Tragically, there have been cases of children dying in hot cars in Victoria in recent years and it’s not worth risking leaving your children in a car.”

Mr Drummond said accidents where keys were locked in the car with a child were common, while other cases were deliberate acts.

“Some people think they can just duck into the shop and leave their child but there’s a risk they will be delayed and it’s a risk that’s not worth taking,” he said.

Lucky escape from flames AN UNCLE is being hailed a hero after saving his young nephew from a fire which destroyed the family home in Laverton.

Eleven-year-old Samuel was rescued by his uncle Mwamba, when it was discovered he was still asleep inside the home as it became engulfed in flames. The Woods St home was ablaze when the Metropolitan Fire Brigade was called about 1.40am last Monday.

Neighbours reported hearing screaming and seeing large flames shooting from the house.

Mwamba had escaped the blaze when he realised his nephew did not make it out.

The 30-year-old turned around, cutting himself as he smashed through a window to reach the child. The family was safely outside the house when firefighters arrived.

Samuel thanked his uncle for saving him.

“I feel great to be alive,” he told Channel 9 News that morning.

Mwamba received minor burns and a small laceration to his arm and was treated by paramedics at the scene. The blaze left the family of seven, who managed to evacuate after their smoke alarm alerted them to the fire, homeless.

The family has made their own emergency accommodation arrangements. MFB communications controller Keith Robinson said the fire was brought under control in just over an hour.

Firefighters stayed on the scene overnight.

An MFB spokesperson said the cause of the fire was not suspicious, however it was still being investigated.

Wool broker sets her sights on innovation

By NICOLE VALICEK SAMANTHA Wan’s interest in agriculture started from a young age and now she’s on her way to becoming a future leader of the wool industry.

The Altona North resident moved from Blacktown in Sydney’s western suburbs in June 2012 to accept a job as a wool technical officer at Elders National Wool Selling Centre in Brooklyn.

Samantha values wool that comes in and appraises it for growers.

“We’re a wool broker that sells the wool to buyers on behalf of the grower, so kind of like a stock broker for wool,” she said.

She was recently among 22 participants at the professional development course known as Breeding Leadership.

“It gave me more perspective on what growers are facing and the im-

provements and innovation in industry,” she said.

“It wasn’t strictly sheep and wool,” We did farm tours, (meet with) entrepreneurs ... it was a good time to network and to increase perspective and development.”

Samantha, who is a first generation Australian-born Chinese, said there was strong development in the industry for the next generation of future wool leaders.

“It’s a great industry to work in

everyone’s very supportive, if you work hard everyone’s willing to give you a go and see what you’re made of and you can only develop yourself further.”

She said she has a lot to learn but looks forward to her career in the industry.

“I’ve got a lot to learn, they (Elders) have such a great network of people in wool and livestock that if I can keep learning that would be great.”

HOBSONS Bay City Council and Toyota will work together to meet the challenges ahead, according to Mayor Sandra Wilson.

Cr Wilson said talks with Toyota recently showed the company has a clear understanding of the community’s needs.

The talks follow Toyota’s announcement on 10 February that the company will be withdrawing from manufacturing vehicles in Australia from late 2017.

Cr Wilson said the council and Toyota will work together to meet the challenges ahead.

“The council has been considering for some time how to minimise the impacts of structural change on the local economy and the local community,” Cr Wilson said.

Cr Wilson said the aim at this point is for the council to gain the best possible understanding of Toyota’s timelines and future plans.

“That’s why we are working on an economic development strategy as well as working with Lead West to advocate for new industries and jobs for Hobsons Bay and the west generally.”

A spokesperson for Toyota said it was important for Toyota to work with all of their stakeholders to determine the best level of support they can provide.

“Ongoing counselling services are available to all of our employees and we will also organise job skill training, such as resume writing, interviews and presentation skills, during the next few months,” the spokesperson said.

The council has also offered to support Toyota wherever possible, particularly in its role as an advocate with other levels of government.

By NICOLE VALICEK PEOPLE in Hobsons Bay are being asked to take part in the municipality’s annual Cancer Council’s Relay for Life.

The Hobsons Bay relay is on 29 and 30 March, with local businesses again throwing their support behind the event.

Business owners in the municipality are being asked to paint the town purple to raise the profile of the fundraising event.

Last week some businesses showed their support by putting out purple banners and displays.

The event will see people walking and running in memory of lost loved ones and in celebration of those who have survived cancer.

Chairman of the local event Ian Dawes said the purple promotion helped spread awareness of this year’s event.

“Cancer affects the entire community and it is great to have such wonderful support from local business,” Mr Dawes said.

Mr Dawes, who lost his daughter to cancer in 2005, said the unique event was an opportunity to increase cancer awareness, raise funds for cancer research and support services.

Hobsons Bay City Council mayor Sandra Wilson said the Relay for Life is a night of fun, celebration and remembrance.

“It brings the community together, offers support to those who may need it, fosters

strength, and provides people of all ages with a unique and enjoyable weekend,” Cr Wilson said.

This year’s event will be held at Newport Park Athletic Track and encourages teams of 10 to 15 people to challenge themselves to a relay style overnight run or walk.

Games, music, food and entertainment will be provided to keep people awake and entertained during the relay.

The winning display will be judged by a panel including members of the volunteer committee and Cr Wilson.

Woman opts to stay in custody

By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE woman facing more than 100 criminal charges will spend at least another two months in police custody at her own request.

Bronwyn Holland appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Tuesday, one month after being arrested in Werribee.

At the time of her arrest she was facing 128 charges but she did not appear at a scheduled hearing at the Sunshine Magistrates Court because, according to her lawyer, she was withdrawing from drugs.

The case was adjourned to

last week but the Magistrate, Jelena Popovic, chastised Ms Holland’s lawyer for not having seen his client at all during the month she was in custody.

The lawyer said since Ms Holland was initially arrested she had been charged with a further six offences.

He claimed he had not received briefings on the new charges and had therefore been unable to seek instructions from Ms Holland.

It was revealed during the hearing that the majority of the 134 charges related to petrol thefts, unlicensed driving and driving with false registration plates.

A smaller number of charges related to theft of alcohol and dangerous driving while being pursued by police.

Ms Holland told the court she felt more comfortable and “better off” remaining in police custody for a further two months.

Ms Popovic made an order for the briefs on the new charges against Ms Holland to be provided to her lawyer before the case returned to the court on Tuesday 6 May. Ms Holland was arrested at a house in Werribee on Sunday 2 February.

Sun smarts keep covered

By NICOLE VALICEK ALTONA MEADOWS Children’s services in Altona are leading the way in sun protection.

According to SunSmart Victorian early childhood education and care services are leading the way in children’s sun protection.

The latest survey showed that 99 per cent of early childhood education and care services in Victoria have a written sun protection policy, an increase of five per cent since 2008 and higher than the current national rate of 88 per cent.

Of the 224 Victorian services that responded to the national Cancer Council survey, 98 per cent stated that they required

children to wear sunscreen and all services said that they required children to wear hats while playing outside.

Altona Meadows children’s service in Altona is one of the services leading the way.

Hobsons Bay City Council mayor Sandra Wilson said the council was 100 per cent committed to providing the children in their care with a sun safe environment to learn and play outside.

“Our sun protection policy is regularly reviewed to make sure it’s in line with SunSmart guidelines and when it comes to going outside our staff make it clear to the children that they must slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.”

SunSmart schools and early childhood co-ordinator, Justine Osborne, said Victorian early years services have always set a high standard for sun protection.

“We are delighted with the progress that they have made in sun protection over the past five years.”

“Sun protective clothing is one of the best protection methods against UV radiation. It’s vital that services include it as part of their policy.”

“Parents also have an important part to play as they can help support their service’s SunSmart initiatives by making good clothing choices when sending their children to care.”

Wolves have no mercy

By ADEM SARICAOGLU WILLIAMSTOWN was again saluted as the best team in Division Two Summer League Baseball after coming out on top of Springvale in a dramatic three-game grand final series on Sunday.

The Wolves needed all three games to get the job done after dropping game two in extra innings on Saturday.

The decider on Sunday proved to be a formality and was decided courtesy of the mercy rule in the middle of the seventh inning - with Williamstown’s powerful hitting line-up managing to get the better of Springvale’s depleted pitching stocks in the 18-4 win.

Among the post-game celebrations, proud coach and first baseman Dean Marnell credited his side’s extra depth in the bullpen with the game-three turnaround.

Melbourne Aces star import Freddy Flores was the biggest obstacle for Williamstown to overcome as he dominated on the mound for Springvale in game two.

On Sunday, the Lions again turned to Flores when they were in trouble at the top of the fifth down 8-4 - which for Marnell - marked the moment he knew his Wolves had one hand on the pennant.

“He is unbelievable and such a good pitcher,” Marnell said of Flores.

“When they brought him in today, we knew we had probably got them because the amount of pitches he threw yesterday (meant) it was going to be hard for him to back it

“I just think we had more pitchers in reserve. We had Josh Lee come in and throw an outstanding game towards the end and their pitching wasn’t quite up to it. They were a bit fatigued.”

While Williamstown was better in the pitching stakes, it was its extremely potent offensive line-up, particularly in Sunday’s drubbing, that proved just as lethal.

Led brilliantly by left-fielder and club president Ryan Camov, the Wolves ran rampant in the fourth inning with a stunning seven-run burst.

Also impressive with the bat were Russell Moldenhauer and Chris Mason throughout the series.

The grand final win was Williamstown’s second in as many summers, but the Wolves did not earn promotion into Division One after claiming the 2012/13 title.

Strict junior requirements kept Williamstown from the top flight, but after going back-to-back in such emphatic style and successfully raising its junior numbers within the past 12 months, the Wolves expect to be part of the big time next summer.

“It’s great to see Williamstown’s up and alive again,” Marnell said.

“Having Ryan Camov as president and getting Ray Baker in as junior co-ordinator has just been sensational for the club.”

Dogs get no mercy

By LIAM TWOMEY ST KILDA handed Footscray just its fourth loss of the Victorian Premier Cricket season on Saturday.

After dominating day one of the clash, the Saints returned to Mervyn Hughes Oval to inflict more pain on the Bulldogs.

Having won the toss and batted first two weeks ago, Footscray battled its way to 153 before being bowled out in the 53rd over.

The Bulldogs were led by skipper Dean Russ, who made 53 at the top of the order, while Shanuka Dissanayaka contributed 31.

St Kilda went on to face 26 overs and despite the loss of gun Victorian duo Peter Handscomb and Rob Quiney, the Saints remained in the box seat, resuming their innings at 3/57.

Footscray began day two needing quick wickets but the Bulldogs’ bowlers were met with some stiff resistance.

shorts DaCosta makes clean break FOR the last time this season, riders came to Hoppers Crossing to contest the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU Sport/ FCC Criterium Track - with one more round to be held next Sunday at Drake Boulevard in Altona to mark the end of a great summer of crit racing. The A Grade race was dominated by a twoman breakaway from the middle of the race, with 42-year-old Ascot Vale resident Miles DaCosta taking a strong win in what has been a stellar season for the A Grade breakaway specialist. DaCosta knew he was going to try for the break, but the trick was who to take up the road. “It started off a little reserved, with people shutting down every break,” he said. “When the bunch brought back Trevor Hutchings’ break, I attacked on the hill and put it into the gutter. I saw Ben O’Leary coming so I waited until he got to me and then we just pulled turns all the way ’til the end. “Every time the bunch surged, we put in a couple of hard turns to answer theirs. You cannot ask for a better guy to be in a break with. Ben just worked hard and at the end we had an unspoken gentlemen’s agreement.” DaCosta took the win from O’Leary, with Travis Small holding off the bunch after attacking with three to go to stay clear for third place.

THE B Grade race was an evenly matched affair, with riders throwing in a multitude of attacks, but each and every attack was shut down almost before they could form by the hard-chasing bunch. But a lack of motivation and foxing saw 41-year-old Newport resident Antonio Marino escape the bunch and take the win, at one time having a lead of three-quarters of a lap. “My legs were feeling a bit sore this week, I didn’t think I would go too well today,” he said. “But, I fired up. When I went I didn’t think I would be allowed to stay away, so I was a little surprised to see my lead. Then I just got into my rhythm and just kept moving along and keeping an eye on the gap and once it started to get to three quarters of a lap I was confident I could keep it going ’til the end.”

Marino finished well clear of the bunch, which pretty much gave up and just jockeyed for the sprint for the last 15 minutes. Brunswick CC’s Tim Feltham took out the bunch sprint and second, closely followed by Arron Liley.

WOULD-BE volleyball stars will be given the opportunity to play with the best when the Western Region Volleyball Competition launches its first social adult competition on March 14 with free try out sessions. Competition general manager Mike Dolan said the junior competition had been a major success since it began eight years ago. This year the indoor volleyball competition will include a social adult category, with free try out sessions and cash prizes offered for the best teams. Other former players have been offered volleyball scholarships with a US university,” Dolan said. Altona’s ton of guts

By LIAM TWOMEY ALTONA has qualified for the Victorian SubDistrict Cricket Association finals after a brilliant victory against Endeavour Hills.

Going into the final round of the season, the A’s were out of the top six on percentage and needed to secure a victory and hope other results went their way to extend their season.

Following on from his brilliant year, Aaron Maynard stepped up, smashing 113 in the A’s run chase to keep his club’s season alive.

However, rewind to the start of the day and after losing the toss and being forced to bowl first, it looked as though it was going to be a tough ask for Altona as Endeavour Hills piled on the runs.

Led by Matthew Hutchinson and Richard Saniga, Endeavour Hills blasted its way to 8/212 after 45 overs.

For Altona, Lee Elmore was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/35 while James Grubb was also solid on his way to two wickets.

In reply, the A’s run chase got off to a tough start when Matthew Davis was dismissed without scoring.

The wicket brought Maynard to the crease as he launched a fightback.

The gun batsman blasted his way to 113 in a stunning innings.

Maynard’s knock lifted Altona to 7/213 in the 42nd over and secured the victory by three wickets.

Before they could celebrate, the A’s had to wait for the result of the Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows and Yarraville match.

Altona’s cross town rival, Yarraville, did its bit for cricket in the Western Suburbs, defeating Roxburgh Park to open a clear path for the A’s into the post season.

Altona will now take on Werribee in the first round of finals, which will be played over Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

The two sides last met in round two and on that occasion it was Werribee that came out on top, winning by 55 runs.

THE unexpected match-up of Seddon and the Sunshine Druids is set to take place over the coming fortnight in Turf Cricket’s North A1 final - beginning this Saturday.

Neither club finished in the division’s top two after the homeand-away season and despite being on the road this weekend, they were able to win their respective semi-finals to reach the decider.

Impressive three-wicket hauls from Druids Jared Andrews and Leigh Wilson proved to be the difference at Taylors Lakes’ Lionheart Reserve on Sunday, where visiting Sunshine successfully defended its 164 to bowl Taylors Lakes out for just 57.

Meanwhile over at Langshaw Reserve, Seddon’s 268 proved far too much for the Altona Roosters, who stumbled in their chase to fall 95 runs short of victory.

Rooster Hamon Uppal fought hard for Altona on Sunday, but was run out for 69 and had little support from his team-mates throughout the order.

In the VTCA’s West B1 competition, Sunshine United advanced to the grand final and will

take on Sunshine Heights in the coming fortnight after going to Saltwater Reserve and defeating Point Cook on its home turf on Sunday.

MELTON Centrals and WLSC Marshalls will contest the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A-Grade Matting grand final after scoring semi-final wins over Point Cook and Wyndhamvale respectively on Sunday.

Centrals’ 9/336 from day one on Saturday proved far too insurmountable for Point Cook at Blackwood Reserve, who in response could only muster 138 in 51.5 overs.

Half-centuries for Melton Centrals batsmen Jason Marks (63), Jack Doyle (63) and Michael Bairstow (61) on Saturday helped set up the win, while on Sunday, Marks stamped himself as man of the match with a five-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, the Truganina-based Marshalls were brutal in their demolition of Wyndhamvale, coming away from Arndell Park with a whopping 279-run win.

Himanshu Topal’s unbeaten 101 helped set the tone for the Marshalls on Saturday, while a pair of 76s from Pranav Sood and Gagan Sethi also proved handy in the mammoth opening dig.

Only Stephen Williams could muster a score beyond 20 with 21 runs for Wyndhamvale, while opener Scott Bomford was the only other man to reach double figures, scoring 16 before getting trapped on the pads.

In the WDCA’s A Turf competition, Grand United has advanced to the grand final after successfully chasing down Bellbridge’s all-out 141 on Sunday.

Grand United chose to send Bellbridge in to bat on the road at Mossfield Reserve and it proved to be a good decision 50 overs into the clash on Saturday.

Matthew Frew was excellent with the ball in his nine overs for Grand United, claiming four wickets for just 15 as teammates Luke Fox (2/35), Josh MacDonald (1/12) and Laurence Browes (1/23) all chimed in with cameos of their own.

The run chase lasted 75 overs, but Grand United had control of it throughout, only losing five wickets on its way to 142.

Captain Glenn Sullivan top-scored with an unbeaten 34 and Jeremy Preston was just as good to finish carrying his bat on 31.

by Adam Contessa 3/32. Chasing a modest 140 to win they were in trouble early at 4/25 then 6 /75 but veteran opener Justin Baker carried his bat for 68 not out and Michael O’Keefe 38 not out got them home by four wickets. They will meet South Caulfield in the grand final.

STEVE Thom, the chairman of selectors, tells me the WRFL interleague squad has been really burning up the track during the couple of sessions they have had so far. While some players are yet to commit, those who have put their hand up are really putting in. I hope all WRFL clubs get behind Brett Jacobs and the team when they take on the Southern Football League on Saturday 29 March at Visy Park at 11.15am. It would be great to see players, officials and supporters of all WRFL clubs at the ground to cheer on the boys from the West. I hope this competition can grow in the future and that players have the same desire to wear the WRFL jumper as an adult that you have when you are under age.

HOPPERS Crossing junior Liam McMahon will captain the Western Jets in the TAC Cup - which begins Saturday week.

The Jets last week confirmed their 52-man squad for the 2014 season along with a leadership group that includes McMahon, Liam Duggan, Jayden Laverde, Mark Orr, Lachlan Knight and Braden Ferrari.

New skipper McMahon, 17, told Star the captaincy is an honour that could have gone to anyone in the leadership group.

“All of them were definitely worthy of the captaincy, so I’m lucky to have such a great group of guys in the leadership group,” McMahon said.

“They’re all very driven, they all know where we want to go as a club and they’ll be fantastic support on and off the field throughout the season.”

McMahon, who over the summer has overcome groin troubles to be ready for round one, said he hopes to be able to set the standard both on and off the field as the club’s new captain.

“Obviously it’s a great honour to lead the club, and I get the opportunity to lead a great bunch of young blokes,” McMahon said.

“It’s a big season ahead which hopefully can bring finals and success with a few blokes drafted.

“I just want to lead by example on the field, make sure I’m putting together some good, solid performances out there and developing my own game to help the players out on the ground.

“I also just want to be there as a role model both on and off the field and be really professional with the way I go about things.”

Former Werribee Tiger and Spotswood premiership player Torin Baker is entering into his second year as senior coach after leading the Jets to last year’s finals series.

McMahon said he has already developed a good rapport with his coach, and is looking forward to working with him as an on-field messenger throughout the year.

“Torin and I have had a pretty good relationship,” he said.

“I think we know where each other stand and I have to basically be his right hand man out on the ground.

“So I’ve just got to make sure that if anything is going on, I need to be on top of it and I need to be able to relay (Baker’s) message wherever I am on the ground.”

The Jets will take on the neighbouring Calder Cannons at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve in the opening round of the new season.

Genesis of Lightning loss

By LIAM TWOMEY VU Western Lightning suffered its second loss in the Victorian Netball League season on Wednesday night.

The Lightning went down to Boroondara Genesis by four goals at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

In their second match in the space of five days, VU was slow out of the blocks against one of the league’s leading teams.

The Lightning fell five goals behind at quarter time and the deficit increased to eight at the main break.

From there, VU was able to regroup and launch its fight back.

With Sophie Gunn in goals, the Lightning drew level in the third quarter.

However, three late goals to Genesis proved crucial as Boroondara regained its composure and secured the 44-40 win.

“At this level of the competition, if you give a team a start and you have to chase them down, you’re going to use a lot of energy,” VU coach Matt Hills said.

“When we got our ducks in a row in the third quarter, we were able to come back to level just before threequarter time. Unfortunately, we al-

lowed them to score the last three goals of the third quarter ... that was probably a significant moment.

“The last quarter became a bit of a scrap between two hard working but tired teams.”

The result sees VU drop to fourth place on the VNL ladder with a 3-2 win/loss record for the season.

The Lightning will now enjoy a week off before returning to take on Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels.

“Against the two top teams we have played, we have given them both a start and been forced to try and chase them down,” Hills said.

“There are some good signs as well. I think it (coming back) shows the quality of our outfit and our resolve, but when the heat of the battle was on early, we weren’t able to execute. It is something that we are going to work on now that we have got this break.

“We will work really hard over the next couple of weeks to start to rectify this.”

In other VNL results, City West Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the VNL ladder after their fifth win of the season.

The Falcons were too good for Geelong Cougars, running out 6041 winners.

Phoenix aims to soar to success

By ADEM SARICAOGLU ALTONA East Phoenix coach Terry Antoniadis knows he’s going to face some very stiff competition in Football Federation Victoria’s upcoming State League One North-West season.

Phoenix was last year part of the old State League Two and could only muster seven wins and five draws to finish seventh in the NorthWest Division.

With the implementation of the National Premier Leagues competitions taking effect this week, the new SL1 is now the third tier competition of Victorian soccer.

But Phoenix is this year going to be joined by local rivals and former second-tier clubs Altona Magic and Western Suburbs - which will enhance the standard from week to week.

“We’re hoping we’ll be OK,” Antoniadis said.

“We’re aware it’s going to be difficult and we’re aware that the league will be more competitive this year with the additions of Western Suburbs and Altona Magic, who are the established clubs at higher levels.

“Hopefully we’ve prepared accordingly, but it’s also been exciting because for a lot of our players, it’s a good opportunity to prove themselves against players of a higher calibre and to play against these clubs that they haven’t played against before.”

Antoniadis is looking forward to leading a much healthier and largely unchanged squad from the one that finished seventh in 2013.

Kieran McDowell and goalkeeper Andy Bourakis have both departed over the summer months, but Antoniadis is confident that if his side can avoid a repeat of its injury troubles from 12 months ago, it should enjoy a competitive season.

“There’s no opposition where you can say you’ll pencil in three points, but we’d also like to think sides wouldn’t like playing us,” Antoniadis said.

“We want to be competitive every time we play and make life as difficult as possible for our opponents and play to our strengths, and I think if we do that, then we should be OK.” Altona East plays Western Suburbs on the opening weekend of the new season on 30 March.

MITSUBISHI has announced an all-diesel MY14 Pajero lineup in what’s likely to be the evergreen large SUV’s final upgrade before a redesigned model appears next year.

The biggest news is the Pajero range now comes with a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, following the addition of a front passenger seatbelt reminder and enhanced driver’s side leg protection.

ISOFIX child restraints are now standard in the Pajero, bringing it into line with the rest of the Mitsubishi range ahead of new Australian child seat restraint legislation later this year.

Pricing remains unchanged, although the manual VRX diesel and the sole remaining petrol variant, the Exceed V6, have both been discontinued, making the Pajero a diesel-only model for the first time.

Mitsubishi’s 147kW/441Nm 3.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, offering 9.0L/100km combined fuel consumption and a hefty three-tonne towing

capacity, is therefore standard across the range.

The five-seat GLX base model continues to open the range at $50,990 plus on-road costs, while the GLX-R sevenseater remains $55,990 plus ORCs. They remain the only (five-speed) manual models in the range, with a five-speed automatic transmission adding a further $3000.

The seven-seat Pajero VRX diesel is now an auto-only model and remains at $63,990 plus ORCs, while the seven-seat Exceed flagship is now a dieselonly model priced at the same $73,990 as before.

All Pajero models continue to come with twin front, frontside and curtain airbags, a reversing camera, Mitsubishi’s RISE body protection and, now, front seatbelt reminders and ISOFIX restraints.

Entry-level GLX and GLXR variants receive Mitsubishi’s hands-free LINK system including Bluetooth 2.0 with voice control, steering wheel

controls and audio streaming, while VRX and Exceed variants add the Mitsubishi multi communications system (MMCS) incorporating 3D satellite-navigation, a high-resolution touchscreen and rear parking sensors.

VRX models continue to add 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, a chromed grille, rear spoiler, rear privacy glass, exterior door mirrors with turn signals and puddle lamps, automatic headlights with washers, rainsensing wipers, partial leather seat trim, heated/powered front seats and leather-look floor, console and door trims.
