Dragon hearts can’t be broken “TO REMEMBER those we’ve lost and to encourage those still fighting.” The Bravehearts Dragon Boat Regatta took some time out for a special ceremony on Saturday. FOR DETAILS TURN TO PAGE 8

 Police commissioner says drunken crime is down, but ...

More to be done By KRYSTEN MANUEL NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has praised the efforts of local police in dramatically reducing alcohol-related crime on the Border. But on a flying visit to Albury police last week as part of a statewide tour, Mr Scipione said there was still plenty of room for improvement. “We’ve looked particularly at where crime is at compared to where it was. Five or six years ago we were experiencing 650 alcohol-related crime incidents a year. “I’m told that on average we’re down to about 160 in this area. That is a fantastic outcome, but is it good enough? “No, we need to do more. 160 is 160 too many. “But all in all, I think you’re in pretty good shape here in Albury. The commissioner briefly touched on a weekend earlier in February where five security guards were assaulted across Albury, saying the recently adopted ‘one punch’ laws would assist as a deterrent for potential criminals. “Anyone that gets themselves to the point where they drink and they want to go out and fight or they fight because they can’t get into a hotel or they’re getting kicked out of a hotel, it’s outrageous,” he said. “I understand that there are a number of those people before the courts, I’d like to say a lot more but what I’m not going to do is prejudice that case. “The behaviour itself is something that simply can’t be tolerated. “A lot of those rules are specifically governed at dealing with a particular precinct. One particular law that will affect this area is the 10pm closure for bottle shops. That will impact across the state, but in terms of the one punch

Superintendent Beth Stirton, NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione and Inspector David Cottee after discussions surrounding local crime. laws – that is where people are assaulted and where alcohol or drugs are a factor – I think that’s going to have a pretty far and wide reaching effect. At the end of the day, it will be a strong deterrent if nothing else. “If you decide you’re going to go out there and get drunk to the extent where you are intoxicated and you go out and hit somebody, throw something at them or assault them and they suffer grievous bodily harm or worse then you can expect to get a minimum mandatory sentence – you’re going to jail.

“I want to commend the licensed places and licensees, they have been responsible, they have a voluntary accord working and that’s the best way to have this work. “At the end of the day it’s about cooperation in the industry and police. But of course, the thing we continue to push is this personal responsibility as well - we can only do so much. The commissioner also discussed the relationship between Albury and Wodonga police, saying it was at an acceptable standard but, of course,

could always be improved on. “It’s something the commander has raised with me,” Mr Scipione said. “I understand we have a fantastic working relationship, certainly with local police. I know Commissioner Ken Lay and myself are in touch and we talk regularly, we will meet in the next couple of weeks. “From my perspective, based on the amount of briefings that take place, the exchange of information, the intelligence and the cross-Border work that goes on, I think there’s been a lot of

good work done in this area. “Can we do more? Will we do more? Should we do more? The answer is yes because we can never do too much. “We’re in this together.” “Today we’ve had a chance to meet with the troops, to meet with the commander and just get a briefing on what’s happening here in Albury, realising that this is a really important part of the state for us,” he said. When two tribes go to war By KRYSTEN MANUEL DEFENDING human rights is the name of the game, but under this banner a bitter feud has erupted between two men with differing views on the Border’s abortion debate. For over a month, Dr Pieter Mourik has been collecting signatures for a petition in a bid to rid Englehardt Street of anti-abortion protesters known as Helpers of God’s Precious Infants. One month ago Albury councillor Darren Cameron came in contact with Dr Mourik. Two Saturdays ago Dr Mourik sat outside Hudson’s Coffee on Olive Street and collected 300 signatures, while Mr Cameron looked on. Dr Mourik claimed Mr Cameron was only there to intimidate him, but Mr Cameron ‘absolutely refutes that,’ saying he was doing what he always does on a Saturday morning and only became active when approached by people complaining about Dr Mourik’s behaviour. “He came along on Saturday morning, told the Hudson’s Coffee people and the security at Centrepoint that he was from the council and I didn’t have permission,” Dr Mourik said. “I did. “He came in just after 9am, sat in the coffee shop at a table for three and a bit hours and he was taking photographs. “When I got told he was telling these people I didn’t have a permit, I rang Michael Keys who said I didn’t need one. “He actually came up to me after his coffee and I said ‘Darren, I do not want to talk to you,’ and he respectfully left because he knows he’s harassing me. “I did feel intimated to have a councillor sitting at a table 30 metres away taking photographs, it’s not illegal but it’s intimidation.”

The foetus doll Dr Mourik said was snatched after a protester presented it to one of his medical students, thinking they were at the clinic for a termination. Mr Cameron said despite the fact that he knew Dr Mourik would be at the cafe, he was there for personal reasons and only became active after receiving complaints. “I have coffee there most Saturday mornings,” Mr Cameron said. “While I was there I was approached by three different members of the public who recognised me and each of them complained about Dr Mourik’s activities and said that he had, quote ‘accosted them.’ “When that happened I took a picture of him on my iPhone and I sent that to the council enforcement team. A ranger came down and that

ranger confirmed that he was on private land, not public, so the ranger had no power to stop him doing what he was doing. “In addition, I also contacted Centrepoint management and let them know that I’d had complaints. “I went over to Pieter to ask him in a polite fashion what was going on and he said to me ‘Darren, I don’t want to speak to you.’ So I walked away. “It was obvious he was in an agitated state and I didn’t want to harass him or cause any confrontation.” While the protesters have remained quiet when asked to speak with NewsWeekly, Mr Cameron has defended accusations that they are not ‘peaceful protesters’ and in turn, is defending their right to protest, saying he remains unbiased on the abortion issue. “I have asked Pieter Mourik to show me some evidence that the people in Englehardt Street behaved in any way inappropriately,” Mr Cameron said. “He as been unable to do that. He sent me three letters, all of which were full of hearsay and allegations, but no evidence. “The abortion clinic films the protesters. Surely if these things that Dr Mourik and others have claimed are happening are happening, they would simply need to show the police the footage from

the abortion clinic. “Yet in all the years this peaceful protest has gone on, they’ve been unable to show one shred of evidence or one stat dec or one bit of film.” Mr Cameron has also speculated he believes Dr Mourik is using the protesting issue for political reasons, which Dr Mourik categorically denies. “Suzie Reid, Rebecca McGowan and Pieter Mourik were all key players and very prominent in the Cathy McGowan campaign,” Mr Cameron said. “I believe the people being asked to sign this petition are being gypped. What this petition seeks to do is ask council to exercise powers it doesn’t have, so I believe he’s executing an organising phase of a similar movement to Voice for Indi and he’ll use that petition and the people who sign it to create a body of people he can harvest political support and candidates from.” Dr Mourik labelled the comments as ‘bizarre and grossly inaccurate.’ “We are focused on one thing - women’s privacy accessing a legal clinic,” Dr Mourik said. “I have spoken to Greg Aplin’s office to say there is absolutely no truth, I have given a report to the Border Mail to say that we categorically deny this has a political agenda.”

Inspirational Trish By KRYSTEN MANUEL

More to be done: top cop From page 1 “I’M encouraged by what I hear, you’ve got a great group of young and more experienced police here. They’re committed, they’re

passionate, they just want to get on with the job. “I’m even more pleased with what their plans are.

“I know there has been a lot of good work done in that drug enforcement area and a lot of work in terms of alcohol-related crime.

Albury’s Woman of the Year Trish Cerminara accepts her award from member for Albury Greg Aplin. social justice for women - being able to stand up for themselves,” she said. “It’s being there for women when they need it or just on the social aspect as well. “I’m from a huge family, I have 11 brothers and sisters. My mother is Aboriginal and my father is German. Growing up in a big family and coming through the struggles we had back then, I think it builds really good strong character. “The passion comes from within my heart, and what better place to have it in than Albury Wodonga? It’s a beautiful community and I’m really passionate about it.” Ms Cerminara is a humble winner, but revels in the opportunity to accept a state wide thanks on behalf of NSW.

“I’m pretty excited, a bit overwhelmed now,” she said. “I’m getting on the plane on Friday and then off to meet the minister. I feel quite privileged to be nominated and to be in a room with a lot of other women who stand in the same footsteps as I do that will be really exciting as well.” The NSW Women of the Year Awards showcase inspirational stories of commitment, sacrifice and extraordinary achievement. “Women such as Mrs Cerminara are fantastic role models, and I hope by sharing her story it helps to inspire others to realise their potential.” The NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell will announce winners of state awards on Friday 7 March at a special reception at Parliament House which Mrs Cerminara will attend.

Barbecues are held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during daylight savings months between 6pm and 8pm. Wodonga Council are looking for neighbourhoods to host a free barbecue this summer. Come along, meet your neighbours and have some fun. LOCAL Woman of the Year for the electorate of Albury has been handed to Albury resident, Mrs Trish Cerminara. “A proud Gamilaroi woman, Trish Cerminara, has been an inspiration, mentor and force to be reckoned with for countless young netballers at the Albury Indoor Netball Association for over 30 years,” Member for Albury, Greg Aplin said. Instrumental in starting the association for young women, Ms Cerminara ran umpiring and coaching programs and grew the organisation to over 1000 players, hosted netball carnivals and became an umpire, coach and “mother” for representative teams. Ms Cerminara has been acknowledged for her services to netball at local and state level and is a Life Member of Albury Indoor Netball. “Trish was instrumental in establishing the Tirkandi Inaburra Cultural and Development Centre at Coleambally for young Aboriginal boys at risk,” Mr Aplin said. “The success of the program in promoting resilience is judged by the fact that over 72 per cent of participants have had no contact with the Department of Juvenile Justice. Trish was nominated chairperson in 2010.” Ms Cerminara became a director of the Albury-Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service in 2005 and chairperson of the Albury and District Local Aboriginal Land Council in 2008. “Trish has also played an active role in fund-raising for SIDS, singing with St Matthew’s Choir and painting individually and with a cultural group,” Mr Aplin said. Ms Cerminara told NewsWeekly her passion came from a deep devotion to the areas she had chosen to focus on, as well as an upbringing that taught her to battle through the struggles of life. “I love empowerment for women and

Entry Year 11 2015 • Pleydell Scholarship

Scholarship Applicants Information Afternoon Friday 14 March 2014 Steve Larkin celebrated his 40th year with Wodonga Council last week. “The council takes pride in its ability to offer a flexible and supportive organisation for our staff. “Steve is the epitome of our aim to develop and retain skilled and committed people that will deliver great outcomes for our community.” And while 40 years is a milestone that might have some people thinking of heading off

into the sunset, Steve Larkin said he had no plans to retire just yet. “I enjoy what I do and working for the benefit of the community,” he said. “It’s satisfying to see projects that start as plans on a desk come to life in the community, and to see people using and enjoying those facilities.”

STEVE Larkin has seen a lot of changes around Wodonga over the past 40 years and as a council engineer he has had a helping hand in making them happen. Mr Larkin celebrated a 40year milestone last week - after starting as as a junior drafting officer with the Wodonga Council in February, 1974 on the princely sum of $14 a day. Back then the engineering team were in the council’s offices where Cafe Grove is now. Fast forward to today and he now works as an infrastructure officer with the council, responsible for everything from roads and drains, to landscaping and boat ramps. But over the years he has been involved in many of the sport and recreation activities in the city including football grounds, tennis centres, golf courses and even remote control cars and the skate park. Chief executive officer Patience Harrington said the council was thrilled to honour Mr Larkin’s years of service. “Steve Larkin is a valued member of our staff and has made an enormous contribution over the years to this city,” Ms Harrington said. “His experience and knowledge of important services that keep this community going is unparalleled.

Bard’s vine time By KRYSTEN MANUEL,

“The play was just hilarious. Very professional. We’re just so lucky to have something of that class on our door step. “I’ve been to a few now and that’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen. It was fairly packed but you still had room to move, still a pretty impressive size though.” And weather wise - it couldn’t have been more fitting. “You could see the rain all around us but we were blessed with no rain, we had a couple of spots and that was it,” Mrs Milton said. “It made for a spectacular sunset - a beautiful pink sky below the big heavy clouds, it was just superb. “We’re definitely looking forward to next year - they’re going to do Macbeth!”

SHAKESPEARE in The Vines at Gapsted Winery was another roaring success with the weather even managing to put on a show of its own. With the lush vines of the Gapsted estate vineyard and the rolling hills of the Alpine Valleys as the perfect backdrop, viewers were kicking back with a glass of wine and watching the timeless beauty of Shakespeare unfold. The Melbourne-based Essential Theatre presented Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream - a national theatre group recognised for its professional and creative presentation of Shakespeare in the Vines. “It was excellent - very well organised,” Shakespeare in the Vines regular Colleen Milton said.

Veins of Steele ONE of Albury’s most dedicated blood donors will make her 300th donation this week. Olwen Steele is a regular face at the Albury Blood Donor Centre and even rolls up her sleeves to give blood plasma. There is a growing demand from patients for the miracle liquid which is used to make 18 different life-saving blood products. Olwen encourages youth to donate blood as part of the Albury school blood donation program and says her enthusiasm for blood donation started many years ago. “Back in England when I was a child my mother became a volunteer blood donor with the national blood service at a time when it was not commonly

done,” she said. “It was something she was very proud of, it became an important part of her identity, just as it has for me.” Albury Blood Donor Centre spokesperson Cathy Chapman said the Blood Service was encouraging regular donors to try giving plasma. “Plasma donation separates your oxygen carrying red cells from the plasma and returns those cells to you during the process, which is why you can donate more frequently.” Olwen says that while plasma donations take longer, the result is worth it. “I now make a plasma donation about every two weeks, and it helps many people in need to overcome serious conditions.”

Young leaders celebrate TEN students from a Wodonga school were part of the annual “National Young Leaders Day” celebrations held in Melbourne last week. The 10 Year 5 and 6 students from Victory Lutheran College were selected based on their aspirations and inclination to lead or represent others at the college. The National Young Leaders Day is an annual event founded in 1997 to develop strong leadership values among young Australians. Principal Cain McDonald said he was proud to have students involved in the day. “National Young Leaders Day - provides an incredible opportunity for our students to

tional and have so many ideas on how to be good leaders,” he said. “I feel proud to have been selected to go”. The program for the day consisted of keynote talks, multimedia presentations and interactive learning that seek a range of specific outcomes for young people who aspire to lead themselves and others well. It was designed to benefit any student who showed an interest in developing their leadership potential. High profile speakers included, renowned author John Marsden, Olympian Jess Fox, Kevin Sheedy, Daniel Flynn and Halogen Foundation executive director Mike Martin.

participate at a national level, and listen to some of Australia’s best keynote speakers on leadership,” he said. “I am proud of the students’ efforts and of the chance to see them aspire to create real world change at such a young age. “ Student and Junior School Ambassador, Ella Fothergill said it was a valuable experience. “I now know I can be a leader anywhere anytime, whether I have a badge or not,” Ella said. “The whole day was inspiring especially the speakers. Jess Fox was my favourite. “ Student Zac Malpass, also a Junior School Ambassador, was impressed by the speakers. “The speakers were inspira-

Hearts of the dragon beat By KRYSTEN MANUEL THERE were a few wet eyes, a few heavy hearts and a lot of hopeful smiles at the Bravehearts Dragon Boat ceremony on Saturday. “There’s a little ceremony to remember those who have passed and to wish well for those who are currently fighting the cancer battle,” Bravehearts Dragon Boat Club coordinator Pauline Harbick said. “It’s a really inspiring ceremony. It’s a reminder that even though battling cancer can sometimes feel like a very lonely journey, there are a lot of people out there and a lot of sup-

port that is available from people in the community.” The ceremony centred about 80 cancer survivors across four dragon boats, which were grouped closely together. Hearts with messages of encouragement and remembrance were floated into the water. With community racing going throughout the day, the event attracted approximately 500 paddlers. “In the ceremony we had probably 80 people on the water there was probably 2000 spectators,” Ms Harbick said. “It was a big crowd.”

LEAVE AND LIVE. Planned out just in case WHAT would you do if you had to leave your home in a hurry? The Victorian Country Fire Authority has prepared a practical checklist to ensure you’re ready if you need to be. They warn it’s important to take care of simple, practical actions well before the start of an emergency - in fact urging residents to plan right back at the start of the fire season so you are ready to leave or seek shelter quickly, calmly and safely. 1. Pack an emergency kit with essential items and keep it in a handy place. 2. Scan important documents and photos onto a memory stick. 3. Purchase a battery-operated radio, powerful torch and extra batteries. 4. Save important contact numbers in your mobile phone. Include family, friends and the Victorian Bushfire Informa-

tion Line. Have a spare mobile phone that you keep fully charged for emergencies. 5. Set aside protective clothing (long-sleeved, made from natural material like cotton) for each member of the family. Put woollen blankets in your car. 6. Practice packing your car so you know how long it will take. 7. Mark your primary routes, alternative routes and petrol sta-

tions on hard copy maps. 8. Make firm arrangements with anyone you plan to visit when you leave early. 9. Talk to neighbours or nearby friends about how you might help each other. 10. Plausible fire plans YOU don’t have to live in the country to be at risk of fire, according to the Victorian Country Fire Authority. If you live near areas that have significant bush, forest, long grass, or coastal scrub, then you need to plan ahead for the fire season, they warn. Not everyone thinks clearly in an emergency. A written, and preferably well-practised plan, will help you remember what needs to be done during a crisis which is why they have set out a bushfire survival planning template on their website. Why should I leave early? Because fires can start and spread very quickly in some conditions, leaving early is by far the safest option for anyone in a high-risk bushfire area. Many people have died trying to leave their homes at the last minute. Even a fire that is kilometres away could be at your door in minutes. In certain conditions, embers can travel many kilometres in front of a fire and a grassfire can travel faster than you can run. Wind changes are unpredictable and can rapidly change the direction or size of a fire. Driving in a bushfire is extremely dangerous, and potentially life threatening. A drive that would normally take five minutes could take two hours. Road closures, traffic jams, collisions, smoke, fallen trees and embers are all real possibilities. In a bushfire, people may be confused, disoriented and physically or psychologically stressed. In these conditions, making good decisions becomes very difficult. What leaving early means Leaving early means being away from high-risk areas before there are any signs of fire. In other words, leaving early is a precaution you take just in case there is a fire - because in some conditions, any fire that starts is likely to be uncontrollable. Leaving early does not mean waiting for a warning or a siren. It does not mean waiting to see or smell smoke. And it certainly does not mean waiting for a knock on the door. Defending your property Planning to stay and defend is a big decision. Most homes in high-risk bushfire areas are not defendable on Code Red days. The defend-

Bushfire plans are necessary for people who live near areas with long grass. ing your property page can help you decide whether or not you are capable of defending your property - and tells you about the risks and preparations involved. How to plan Just as every family or household is unique, every fire plan will be different. There are many ways you can go about your planning - but the information and templates in the Fire Ready Kit and on this website, are designed to put you on the right track. At an absolute minimum, talk through the 10 decisions below with your household. Review these points before each fire season and don’t put it off until later: Which fire danger rating is your trigger to leave? Will you leave early that morning or the night before? Where will you go?

What route will you take and what is your alternative in the event that a fire is already in the area? What will you take with you? What do you need to organise for your pets or livestock? Who do you need to keep informed of your movements? Is there anyone outside your household who you need to help or check up on? How will you stay informed about warnings and updates? What will you do if there is a fire in the area and you cannot leave? Remember to decide who will do what as part of your plan. - See more at: http://www. cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/ your-bushfire-plan

Cafe Amore They’ve bean doing a good job By KRYSTEN MANUEL “WHAT you do, you should do well” is the simple mantra Rod Ayton applies to Wodonga’s popular Deli Bean cafe. Oozing art deco history, the building dates back to around 1949 when the original W.A. and P.E. Elkington corner “cash store” was built, and much of that style remains in place. With over 25 years in the hospitality industry, Rod ensures his customers receive the best quality in local produce from Morrison Butchery meats and Butt’s Smokehouse products, to Milawa cheeses and breads on a Thursday and Friday, plus some delectable Valentines bakery goods. Deli Bean also offers a scrumptious range of gourmet local retail products, including the striking flavours of Frou Frou cordial, the ever-popular Jim Jam preserves, pickles and relish, Glenora Olive Oil, Blue Ox pickle, King Valley Fine Foods and the Border’s favourite - McGraths poppyseed dressing. Nicole De Jong is the master behind Deli Bean’s fresh home-made meals, whipping up hot pies, gourmet Turkish bread sandwiches, adventurous frittatas and more every day. Rod has kept a seasonal mind when it comes to daily specials, with unique salads for summer and hearty soups for winter. Quality coffee is the other major focus for both Rod and barista Jessica Greenwood. “We use Merlo coffee,” Rod said. “It’s a great, well-rounded blend from

Queensland with a loyal following.” Outside, Deli Bean’s sunny courtyard is the perfect place to drink in the current beautiful weather, and the Beechworth Road location provides a brief escape from the busyness of High Street, but with ease of access and ample parking. But it’s the people - behind and in front of the counter - at the heart of Rod’s passion. “When we first took over it was more about the food and the coffee, but it’s the regular customers that really make the atmosphere,” he said. “We have people who come in on a daily basis, we see them at the same time every morning for the same coffee. “When people come in here and leave with a smile on their face and say ‘Thanks, that was awesome!’ Or they pop out the back and say ‘Thanks Nic, that was fantastic!’ or ‘Great coffee!’ That sort of thing really puts a smile on your face. “And of course we have a great team of five full-time staff that make it a happy workplace.” Quality food, quality coffee, quality service and a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere combine to ensure a great experience at Deli Bean. Deli Bean is open 7.30am-5pm Monday to Friday and is located at 237 BeechworthWodonga Rd, Wodonga, phone (02) 6056 3354.

Over 55s ..... Life starts Now!

It’s a sought-after location By KRYSTEN MANUEL STAGE five of Kensington Gardens is sparkling on the horizon, and now more than ever is the time to start the ball rolling to secure your piece of this beautiful estate. “We’re in final discussions with the engineers as far as the layout of stage five is considered, so we’re hoping to have the final draft of the plan in the next couple of weeks to get out to the public,” village manager Tony Lieschke said. “The estimate is approximately 24 lots with a mix of larger homes. The stage itself is adjacent to the golf course, so it’s a pretty desirable, well sought-after location. “We’ve already taken a considerable number of deposits for the stage and out of loyalty to those who have shown interest and come through the village, we have an ‘extended family,’ so primarily the lots go to the extended family first. If they’re interested in making a commitment, they go on as a depositor and we give them the assurance of first choice of lots before we release to the general public. “People spend a lot of time doing their research and inspecting and we want to reward that loyalty.” In addition to granting first option to the extended family, those who become depositors will also enjoy rewards dollar-wise. “We have had a recent price rise handed on from the builder, but we

“The Paisley.” have agreed to hold the pricing on anyone who becomes a depositor by the end of March and signs a contract prior to the end of June,” Mr Lieschke said. Stage five has already created a lot of interest and it’s no surprise given it’s sought-after location. “We’ve had a big call on three and four-bedroom homes - that’s what the

market has been telling us over the last 12-18 months,” Mr Lieschke said. “So we took that on board as part of our planning process. “It’s adjacent to the golf course and enjoys a close proximity to the community centre, so it’s right in the hub - it ticks a lot of boxes.” Buyers can also expect the same

quality build, with ease and flexibility of choice when the time comes to start the building process. “Given the scope of this stage, we certainly expect there will be people looking for some unique extras or addons, so we’re pretty confident that with the range and flexibility we have, we will be able to meet their needs,” Mr Lieschke said.

“We try to make it easier for the clients, so we have pre-selections. Clients come into the selection room, look at the bricks, look at the tiles and customise their own home from the ground up.” For more information, call Tony Lieschke on 02 6049 3100 or 0488 770 181.

Over 55s ..... Life starts Now! Seniors push mature workers SENIORS have pushed the economic case for mature age workers - backed a $6 fee for GP visits - and called to delay the Coalition’s paid parental leave scheme in their federal budget submission. “Older Australians are moving in step with calls to tighten spending,” National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said. “We’ve pared back requests, focused on productivity and identified a handful of savings across the spectrum. “Health is clearly an area ripe for efficiencies.

Projected to account for two-thirds of increased government spending by 2050, it’s heavy with demand and plagued by duplication. “A safety-net backed $6 fee for GP visits is something consumers can handle, and is preferable to a blanket increase in the Medicare Levy, which is already rising from 1.5 to 2 per cent in July to fund the NDIS. The submission also calls on government to delay its paid parental leave scheme. “After six years of budget deficits, now is not the time to introduce a generous parental leave scheme,” Mr O’Neill said. “To do so would send an inconsistent message to groups willing to pare back.” Under the heading ‘productivity’, the submission calls for the pre-emptive reskilling of older workers in declining industries and support for mature age entrepreneurship. “Without reskilling, long-term unemployment rates show older workers in collapsed industries will struggle to get back into the workforce,” Mr O’Neill said. “We’re calling on government to get on the front foot and provide practical re-training opportunities long before factory closures,” Mr O’Neill said. Research shows we lose $16 billion a year by not employing older people who want to work, and just a five per cent increase in over 55s workforce participation would add almost $50 billion to the economy. The submission identifies further efficiencies in national drug purchasing arrangements; health duplications; and marriage counselling vouchers. It opposes raising the pension and preservation ages without job market improvements; increasing the Medicare Levy; including the family home in the age pension assets test; and using the family home via a reverse mortgage to pay for aged care.

Time to visit Riverwood By KRYSTEN MANUEL THERE has never been a better time to satisfy your curiosity and visit Riverwood Retirement Village. Sales manager Wayne Matsinos has been busy assisting people with inspections for the past fortnight as the variety of properties up for sale has increased unlike the age of his clients. “The clients recently have been in the age range from about 60 to 70, so the demographic of age is coming back a bit,” Mr Matsinos said. “People are actually looking to get into retirement a lot earlier and see the benefits of a lifestyle village like Riverwood. They’re deciding their homes are too big to look after, the kids have left home and so are deciding that ‘yes, this is the way to go for the future’. “I spoke to one lady in Lavington who hadn’t considered Riverwood, she hadn’t been in because she’s in her sixties and hadn’t thought about retirement living, and when she did come in she was very surprised to see how great the properties are. “She doesn’t need a big house, but certainly enough space for her to enjoy life instead of having to worry about gardening on the weekends.” Mr Matsinos said the biggest drawcard for people considering moving into retirement liv-

Mary McKenna, Bob Watson and sales manager Wayne Matsinos on Riverwood’s pristine bowling green. ing was the freedom of choosing how much time they wanted to spend gardening. Riverwood has some units with no gardens to tend, leaving them more time to travel, relax and get the most out of life. Those wanting to sell their homes can also take advantage of the current market conditions. With interest rates still at a record low, this helps to make it easier to sell, as long as the property is priced in line with the current market. “Interest rates certainly play a major role when people are looking to buy into the market-

place, so being on hold again is fantastic for the people actually looking to purchase,” Mr Matsinos said. And why choose Riverwood? “Riverwood is the best option for people looking for a relaxed lifestyle,” Mr Matsinos said. “We also have a low-care hostel co-located in the village, so if you need a bit more care later on in life, that’s another option.” Don’t miss your chance to inspect Riverwood Retirement lifestyle today.

Hands off the aged pension, say seniors OLDER Australians have warned Treasurer Joe Hockey off any move to raise the pension age, following comments he made on breakfast television. “The age pension, when it was introduced in the early 1900s, life expectancy was 55,” he said. “Today life expectancy is 85

and yet the pension starts at 65.” But National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said any move to raise the pension age would be ill-considered. “Without tackling mature age unemployment first, government will be shifting people from one form of welfare to another,” he said. “Older Australians want to

work but once they lose their jobs, no-one will hire them. “Raising the pension age is a simplistic approach to a deeper problem, and it is not a solution to the national welfare bill.” “Only business, government and society working together will change the employment fortunes of older Australians.”

Don’t miss Dragon’s celebration of three very different, but very successful eras.

Dragon’s breath across the ages UNLIKE many bands, there are three distinct ages that define the evolution of the iconic rock band Dragon. The eras represent the rites of passage that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. Now, for the first time, Dragon is hitting the road to celebrate these three ages with their special ‘Dragon - The Trilogy’ concert tour. The three key eras in Dragon’s fourdecade history have been dubbed the Young Years (1973-’79), the Glory Years (1982-’98) and the Phoenix Years (from 2006 on). The current line-up of the band features Todd Hunter, Mark Williams, Pete Drummond and Bruce Reid. Founder and bass player Todd Hunter says the band will revisit some obscure older songs that they have affection for and play the hits from each of the eras. “We’ll also have a mystery song slot where we will play a different song every night,” he said. “We’ll take requests for the slot on our Facebook page. The hits speak for themselves. Our task with those is to play them and let the crowd sing along. It seemed to me that there are three distinct eras in the Dragon saga and the songs from each age are markedly different.” In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dragon dominated the Australian music scene. Their live shows were unsur-

passed and their notorious rock’n’roll lifestyle was well documented. Ever since then, they’ve continued to release hits, pack live music houses and earn a swag of fans throughout New Zealand and Australia. During the first era – the Young Years –the band formed in the prehistoric wilds of New Zealand, with Todd Hunter there on bass right from the start. It was named Dragon after a throw of the I Ching on New Year’s Eve in 1973. Todd’s brother Marc joined later in 1973 and the band continued touring extensively. In May 1975, they packed their bags and headed for Australia. Front man Marc Hunter made a name for himself as one of Australia’s most enigmatic lead singers and Dragon carved themselves into the Oz music history books. “On our first day in Australia, Marc and I walked from Paddington to Bondi Beach and stood on the rocks in the sun,” he said. “There was a feeling of freedom of endless possibility, and we loved it. When we went on the road driving to Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide - the distances, the age of the landscape - we got to love those huge vistas - and God knows we saw a lot of them!” The band called it quits (for the first time) in 1979, bringing a close to the Young Years. Three years later in 1982 the band reformed and smashed their way back onto the airwaves with Rain and the second

Box office

era - the Glory Years - was born. “The band in the ’80s made a huge sound,” Todd said. “Tommy Emmanuel, Doane Perry, and Alan Mansfield gave it incredible oomph and class. Whether it was at a pub in Jindabyne where the sheer volume and intensity flattened the crowd on to the back wall, or in huge arenas in Europe to crowds of 100,000, it was an awesome outfit.” The band continued to play intermittently throughout the 1990s until the sad passing of Marc Hunter in 1998, calling an end to the Glory Years. There was no sound from Dragon for the next eight years. It was 2006 when Todd felt the urge to play again and contacted fellow Kiwi Mark Williams to see if he wanted to ‘be in a band’. Bruce Reid and Pete Drummond joined to fit the puzzle together and Dragon was reborn - the Phoenix Years had begun. “On New Year’s Eve 2011 we played the Rhythm and Vines Festival. It’s an amazing thing to be in your sixties and smashing through a great bunch of songs and to look out at 35,000 kids leaping up and down and singing songs that were written decades before they were born,” Todd said. “It’s a great way to grow old disgracefully.” Dragon will perform on Friday 21 March at The Cube Wodonga. MOVIE: Non-Stop STARRING: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Nate Parker, Scoot McNairy, Michelle Dockery, Corey Stoll DIRECTOR: Jaume Collet-Serra

DURATION: 110 minutes I’M DEFINITELY on the Liam Neeson action bandwagon, but this film just didn’t do it for me or my fellow Neeson fan, who turned to me at the end of the film and flatly said “that was crap.” The idea was there, the acting was there, but somehow, after so many twists and turns, I became bored and agitated.

(Moore), who I personally found particularly annoying thanks to her nosy, interfering character. “It had a bit of a thrill to it,” my companion, Elle said. “My favourite part of it was Julianne Moore’s performance - love her. “But I felt like the character was just another generic Liam Neeson film character. I didn’t get into his personal character - it was just Liam Neeson. Even Bruce Willis can take on another character in his action films. “It was also unbelievable, the way the story was played out. “I didn’t really like this movie actually.” ★★

The storyline centres around US Air Marshal Bill Marks (Neeson), a depressed alcoholic. On boarding a flight from New York to London, Marks receives a series of text messages asking him to deposit $150 million into an offshore bank account. Until this happens, one passenger will die every 20 minutes. As the story unfolds, Marks doesn’t just have to battle the terrorists, but the mindsets of everyone on the plane, his on-ground command and the people of America as he is set up to look like the terrorist he’s trying to find. Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Home has best of both worlds OOZING country charm, this sophisticated home is just the ticket for the family which yearns for big, quiet, open spaces but doesn’t want to miss out on convenient town access. Set on 11 acres, this property also features natural gas, 12 separate paddocks with water troughs, chook shed, stable and stockyards, fully automated sprinkler system and solar panels. Rolling up the driveway of 41 Gillifer Lane will take you over an old railway, now converted to a bike track, surrounded by well-fenced paddocks, landing you in front of the three-metre high, four-car garage. The garden surrounding the homestead has been kept to an immaculate standard, with manicured lawns, established trees, shrubs and flowers and the added benefit of both town and bore water. The yard also offers an above-ground pool, cleverly placed in the ground to give all the effect and use of an in-ground pool.

The outdoor entertainment area is extensive itself, with a large undercover pergola and ceiling fan. The home is fully renovated and, like the garden, has been maintained to a high standard. Rendered on the outside, this home features a wide verandah that wraps around the entire home, passing stunning French doors, complete with leadlight feature window. Through these doors will take you into the dining/ formal lounge room - a spacious, open area with 90-degree views to the yard and pool, polished floorboards and generous 10-foot ceilings which extend throughout the home. The home also enjoys ducted heating and cooling throughout. The family room is cosy with its log fire, located in the centre of the home and just a step away from the kitchen. The kitchen itself offers ample cupboard space, dishwasher and a corner window view out to the pool and driveway - the per-

fect place to spend all day in, whipping up some good old-fashioned country delights. The back of the home features a lower level for the laundry and separate toilet, with the back door leading to the outdoor entertainment area - perfect for social gatherings. The bathroom is a long, rectangular shaped area with a luxurious, deep spa bath, large shower and separate toilet. Bedroom one is queen-size, with builtin robe, as is bedroom two. Bedroom three is king-size and offers a corner window and built-in robe. The master bedroom is king-size, with built-in robe, small ensuite (shower and vanity), heated towel rack and TV connectivity. But its most alluring feature is the two generous windows, allowing the occupant beautiful views of the yard, water feature, and distant paddocks. For those who want country style living just 10 minutes from town, this is the place for you.

Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

Median rare COMPARING median house prices is a useful house hunting tool, helpful when researching which areas have shown attractive capital growth and where bargains are available. Refining that search by comparing the medians of particular towns, types of property - houses or units - and number of bedrooms makes it even more useful. The REIV’s newly-released December median price data shows four-bedroom houses in regional Victoria increased in price more than smaller homes over the final three months of 2013. That median price was up 2.3 per cent on the September quarter, compared with 1.8 per cent for three-bedroom houses and 1.7 per cent for two-bedroom. Prices for one-bedroom units, favoured by buy-to-rent investors, also increased by 1.7 per cent, but the median price of two-bedroom and three-bedroom units actually fell slightly over the three months. Comparing medians for different areas shows substantial variations across the state - for example, the median price of a four-bedroom house in Ballarat Central increased from $387,500 in September to $432,500 in the December quarter, an 11.6 per cent increase. In Benalla the September median of $257,500

went up to $278,750 in December, an increase of 8.25 per cent. But in south-eastern Bairnsdale the September median of $299,000 for a four-bedroom house fell to $292,500 in the December quarter down 2.1 per cent. It is worth noting that median prices include both the highest and lowest sales in a town, so a few exceptionally high or low sales can have an impact on the median, particularly in an area such as Bairnsdale which recorded fewer than 50 four-bedroom house sales in the year. So areas with negative median price growth in the December quarter may still be an excellent longterm investment. Factors such as a home’s quality, its location and how near it is to amenities such as schools and transport will determine exactly how much it’s worth. Local factors such as employment opportunities will also have a bearing on house prices. All this median price information, including annual capital growth over five years, is available free on the REIV website. Go to www.reiv.com.au/en/Property-Research/Bedroom-Medians, choose the property type and then click on the map to see the information for your selected area.

Local Sport Little Aths go for big win By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY Little Athletics Club has smashed its competition at the Northern Country Region Track and Field event. As a result, about 75 per cent of the team’s competitors will be heading to state later this month. “Every second year Albury hosts the Northern Country Region Track and Field, which is the preliminaries for qualification for state level, Albury Little Athletics Club president and regional track and field team manager Brett Schofield said. “This year we had 41 athletes enter. “They’ve won a total of 32 gold, 23 silver and 30 bronze. “Out of that, so far we’ve got 27 that are eligible to progress to state, the final progressions will be out on the 13th of March. Of the successful athletes, Mr

Schofield said several were high hopes for state victory. “We’ve had a couple of stand-out athletes, he said. “Will Bowden, he’s quite a good discus thrower in the under 12 agegroup. He won gold and is actually our centre record holder, throwing 33 - 34m and has beat Lucas Cannan’s record. “Lockie Gow is one of our sprinters - 70m and 100m. He’s won gold in both of those and made it through, even though he was injured. “Claudia Grogan got gold in the 100m and silver in the 70m, so she will also progress through to state. Mr Schofield said regardless of the result, he was rapt with his team. “I’m extremely proud of them, he said. “These guys have put in a lot of hard work throughout the season

and this is just the pay-off for that. “It’s great to see them getting the recognition - they go down to state, they get to compete at Albert Park in the new stadium, what could be better? Despite the inherently competitive nature of athletics, Little Athletics teaches children how to improve on themselves, gives them drive and more often than not, a real passion for their chosen event. “We don’t push the competitive side of it here, Mr Schofield said. “It’s actually more about pushing yourself. So we really push the personal bests every year by having our own centre track and field championships. We started off last week, we’ll finish this weekend, so people who get first, second and third, they get ribbons, but at our presentation it’s the people that have got the most PBs that end up getting trophies for their age groups.

The successful team of Albury Little Aths kids, looking forward to state later this month.

Warriors’ winning way on the waves By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Warriors Dragon Boat Club had their first win in a weekend that saw both community and professional teams compete, drawing crowds of thousands. On Saturday, 500 paddlers converged on Gateway Lakes to compete in community teams and drag their boats to victory. AlburyCity came out on top, narrowly beating the Joss team, and also taking out the council race in another narrow margin against Wodonga Council. “Those people just came along for a good time, Bravehearts Dragon Boat Club co-ordinator Pauline Harbick said. “It’s a great team-building thing. A dragon boat needs 20 paddlers and to make the boat move quickly, you need to paddle together as a

team. So it’s a great team-building excise and a great leveller because these people haven’t had experience in a dragon boat before, so the manager is no better than the junior employees. Of the 24 teams, 21 were community teams and three were composed of cancer survivors. Sunday was a club day, inviting teams from across Victoria and southern NSW to compete. “There was racing all day and the main race was won by the Warriors Dragon Boat Team from Albury, Ms Harbick said. “They beat the favourite team, The Melbourne Flames, so they were pretty rapt about that. “It’s good to see a local team win on our home turf. Ms Harbick said both the Bravehearts Dragon Boat Club and The

Joss and Manor House Teams going for gold. Pictures: ADAM WILSON Warriors were currently recruiting, with a ‘come and try’ day coming up this weekend. “Anyone can join the dragon boat teams, she said. “Both Warriors and Bravehearts

BAKER HYUNDAI

are recruiting and you don’t have to be a cancer survivor to join our club, just supportive of the cause. “We will have a Recruitment and New Members Day on Sunday at 4pm at Gateway Lakes.
