Festive fun

CHARLES and Victoria streets were a hive of activity on Saturday when the Seddon Festival hit town. The streets were lined with stalls, a kids’ zone, food vendors and roving entertainers. Rebecca Barnard and Billy Miller headlined a list of performers that included international artists and comedy duo Perky and Fiddle, as well as a dazzling array of musicians and performers. Pictured above from left, Thomas, Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Hamish and Stephen enjoyed the fun. 115807

Assaults on rise By CHARLENE MACAULAY

Insp Long said it was very frustrating to see the increase in assaults, despite the amount of time and effort police already dedicate to keeping the community safe. “The difficulty is that many of the non-family violence assaults occur between people known to each other who, often as a result of excessive alcohol consumption or drug use, end up fighting each other,” he said. “These situations often result in serious injuries and are extremely difficult for us to police. “We have decided that we will be diverting more resources into our higher risk areas focusing on anti-social behaviour and drinking - which often end up

leading to assaults being committed,” Insp Long said. “This will further boost the level of community safety within the area and we also believe that this will have a flowon effect of reducing property crime. “So the message is clear - if you come into Maribyrnong looking to use drugs or drink excessively and cause trouble - you will be caught and you will be charged,” he said. “We have made some pretty significant gains ... that said, we still have a lot of work to do, particularly in relation to crimes against the person.”

FOOTSCRAY Police has launched a new taskforce in a bid to stop the escalating number of assaults occurring across the City of Maribyrnong. Inspector Tony Long announced the introduction of the Westgate Safer Community Taskforce last week, which will include staff from Footscray supported by other resources. The task force will conduct highly visible patrol activities across the municipality, with a focus on preventing crimes against the person, such as assault. The announcement comes after new

Victoria Police statistics reveal rising levels of crimes against the person and assaults in the City of Maribyrnong for 2013. Overall crime dropped by 6.5 per cent, with significant decreases in drug offences (40.9 per cent), thefts from cars (34.1 per cent), car thefts (32.1 per cent) and robberies (21.6 per cent). On the flip side, crimes against the person rose by 16.7, with 771 assaults recorded between 1 January 2013 and 31 December, up 32.5 per cent from the previous year. Assaults excluding family violence jumped 27.2 per cent, with 533 offences recorded.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Yarraville’s pop-up park will become a permanent feature along Ballarat St from next summer. Maribyrnong City Council voted last week to turn the popular installation into a year-round park with synthetic turf, custom-made umbrellas and permanent street trees. The $250,000 project, which will be in place by December, will also be a key feature of the annual Yarraville Festival. Councillor Michael Clarke said the pop-up park had received overwhelming support from the local community since it was first introduced in 2011. “Of all the initiatives I’ve had the pleasure of being involved in ... I’ve never, ever enjoyed such overwhelming support,” Cr Clarke said. “It can only attest to what this council is about - innovation and being edgy.” Cr Clarke thanked Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith for his continued support of the pop-up park. Mr Smith headed a group of traders in resurrecting the pop-up park this summer, when the council voted against bringing it back over 2013/14. Mr Smith, who attended last week’s council meeting to see the vote, was thrilled with the outcome. “It was wonderful to hear the councillors talk of the success of the park, the community support, and their intentions not just to deliver this park for Yarraville, but to emulate its success by continuing to try new ideas in other areas, like the West Footscray parklets,” he said. The pop-up park was initially inspired by similar projects across London and New York and came about after a study identified a lack of open space in the Yarraville village, with narrow footpaths causing pedestrian congestion. In 2012 the pop-up park won the 2012 Mainstreet Innovation Award.

MARIBYRNONG City Council will spend $1.5 million to fix up the Pipemakers Park in Maribyrnong. The council wants to take over Pipemakers Park and two other parks across the municipality in a bid to improve the public open space already on offer. The council will write to Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries to commence the formal process for the council to be appointed Committee of Management of Pipemakers Park, Burndap Park and the remaining portions of Footscray Park. For this to occur, Parks Victoria must make a recommendation to the DEPI. The process is expected to take around six months. Once approved, the council plans to improve the amenity and recreational facilities at Pipemakers Park, including tree clearing and pruning, replacing old furniture and barbecues, new paths, bridges and decks, garden bed upgrades and a toilet facility.

Bradmill plan ticked By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council has approved plans for a Neighbourhood Activity Centre at Yarraville’s Bradmill site. The $20 million project includes space for two anchor supermarket tenancies and 30 specialty retail outlets, a medical centre with seven practitioners, a 100-seat restaurant, the Yarraville library, 22 one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and a petrol station. The development will also include 471 on-street and on-site car

parking spaces. Councillor Michael Clarke said the Neighbourhood Activity Centre would offer a shopping alternative to the popular Yarraville Village, and would transform what is an eyesore into a thriving residential precinct. “The people of Yarraville want to see this industrial site removed and something more to their aspirations built,” Cr Clarke said. The Bradmill redevelopment, which will be called Yarraville Gardens, is tipped to take up to 12 years to complete.

State Planning Minister Matthew Guy has already approved the development plan for the site, which features up to 1500 new single-storey and high-density homes and associated retail and community infrastructure in the Bradmill Precinct. The development is expected to be rolled out in seven stages. Demolition on the 23.6 hectares site has already begun. The development plan shows low-rise housing fronting Francis Street, with the inner area housing generally between two-storey to

three-storey homes. The plan proposes to restore and reuse heritage buildings along McIvor Reserve for residential apartments up to eight storeys. Five per cent of the properties will be affordable housing, while proposed apartment blocks will all feature internal multi-level car parking. Councillor Catherine Cumming raised concerns about the new development sharing the same name as the existing Yarraville Gardens along Somerville Rd.

WEST Footscray’s Aus Group Alliance is one of 61 Victorian businesses which will share in $1.7 million in Victorian Government funding to reduce business costs by conserving energy and reducing waste. Aus Group Alliance will receive $25,000 to install energy efficient induction high bay lighting. Western Metropolitan Region MP Bernie Finn said this latest round of the government’s Smarter Resources Smarter Business grants would save the 61 small to medium sized businesses around $2.1 million a year. Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith invited Victorian businesses to apply for the next round of program grants, which is open until Friday 2 May.

Martin Zakharov with stencil art.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY A COLOURFUL Yarraville identity has been honoured with a stencil art image. Michelle Crow, who passed away from a suspected heart attack on the corner of Hyde and Francis streets in January, will live on through the life-sized image, which was done by street artist Ryne Price on the side of The Bank in Ballarat St. Ms Crow was a long-time Yarraville character who would both

delight and offend traders and residents with her antics, which included swearing at bushes and houses, and posing for photos with traders and their wares. The council-funded project is one of many stencil art pieces to pop up around Yarraville, and councillor Martin Zakharov has promised more to come. “It’s been quite popular,” Cr Zakharov said. “She’s (Michelle) such an un-

usual character ... we tracked this guy down to do a large stencil art considering there was such a large response when she died. “She would get on the trains and come to Yarraville every day - she loved it around here and became a real feature of the area. “The plan is to extend that stuff partly for beautification of the area, but it’s also a great way to stop graffiti. It’s got practical outcomes as well. Graffiti artists tend to respect

artworks and leave them alone. “It’s been a good investment.” Maribyrnong City Council plans to get LeadWest, the Inner Melbourne Action Plan Implementation Committee and other stakeholders on board in an advocacy plan to deal with graffiti in the area. The move comes after the council ran a four-month graffiti blitz and removed 12,614 square metres of graffiti from public and private property.

Breast checks drop By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY women are failing to make use of their local BreastScreen Victoria clinic. Figures from the Footscray BreastScreen clinic show that screening participation has fallen in recent months and many appointment slots remain unfilled. Only 51 per cent of women aged between 50 and 69 years living in the area took advantage of the free service between 2011 and 2013, which is lower than the state wide average of 54 per cent and the BreastScreen Australia target of 70 per cent. Yvonne Pagan said she was surprised at the low participation rate.

The 60-year-old Yarraville resident is vigilant about having her breast screen at the Footscray clinic every two years. “Some women may find the process a little embarrassing, but you have to be proactive when it comes to your health,” Ms Pagan said. “It’s your body and your responsibility to yourself and your family if you want to be there for the duration of your children’s lives. “It’s such a small amount of your time, and it’s certainly not nearly as uncomfortable as the dentist.” One in nine Victorian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and those aged between 50 and 74 years are most at risk.

Footscray MP Marsha Thomson encouraged women to make a booking. “I’m concerned to hear that local women aren’t participating in the screening program. Having a breast screen every two years is so important,” Ms Thomson said. “The mammogram takes just 10 minutes, offers peace of mind and could even save your life.” Regular screening mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, before any symptoms are noticed and when treatment is likely to be most successful. Bookings are required so call 13 20 50 or go online to breastscreen.org.au to make an appointment today.

Riding for a cause By CHARLENE MACAULAY RAPHAEL McGowan is a man with a cause. Mr McGowen jumped on his bike last Wednesday and will cycle 1900 kilometres from Adelaide to Sydney over this month for Cycling to March for Melanoma. He hopes to raise $100,000 for melanoma research in memory of his sister Tess, who passed away from melanoma at the age of 30. Along the way, Mr McGowan will stop at Whitten Oval on 10 March for a fundraising morning tea with the Western Bulldogs. Members and the general public are being encouraged to come and show their support. “Tess was just 29 years old when diagnosed and passed away 11 months later from melanoma cancer leaving a husband and daughter,” Mr McGowan said. “The gift of her incredible voice and spirit will be in my thoughts and in my heart throughout the ride. “The aim of my ride is twofold - to raise at least $100,000 for the charity and to increase melanoma awareness among the youth,” he said. “Although research shows some 90 per cent of melanomas can be cured, further statistics reveal there are some 12,500 new cases diagnosed annually in this country alone. “Right now my focus has been on the mental side of the ride which I’ve found to be extremely challenging as I’m still a relative novice on a road bike.”

What’s not to love about mango season? Scoring that sweet golden flesh into little pop-out squares and feeling the juice dribble down my chin almost makes me feel like I’m holidaying on a tropical island in Far North Queensland. One of our favourite varieties - the Honey Gold mango - is grown by Queensland-based Pinata Farms in nearly every mainland state, including Victoria, and is now being imported to Russia. Fittingly, it was recently pictured about as far away from its tropical homeland as it could get … in the snowy surrounds of Sochi, giving our Aussie Winter Olympians a little taste of home. So in keeping with the mango theme (and given our special guest Ivo is a barbecue specialist), this week’s recipe is a lovely, fresh salsa from Taste.com.au that’s the perfect partner for grilled meats.

MANGO AND AVOCADO SALSA 1 just-ripe mango, cheeks removed, peeled and finely chopped 1 avocado, halved, stone removed, peeled and finely chopped Half a red onion, finely chopped 1 long fresh red chilli, deseeded and chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice. COPING with the loss of a dog or cat is the most difficult aspect of owning a pet and one of the hardest parts about being a vet and vet nurse. This week our clinic has said a sad goodbye to several patients who we have known for more than 14 years each. Euthanasia is usually decided based on an animal’s deteriorating quality of life or when medical treatment options have been exhausted. Our owners and their animals are part of our family, too, and when the time comes for a pet to be put to sleep we ensure animals pass in a peaceful and painless manner. Pets truly do provide us with unconditional

love and are a faithful long-term companion. For this reason, the loss of a pet is as painful as the death of any family member. Many people choose to have their pet cremated so their ashes can be kept close by or scattered somewhere special. Surround yourself with friends and family and share your memories about your pet. Pet grief counsellors can provide additional support. Allow plenty of time for both yourself and the other pets at home to mourn and possibly consider taking on a new puppy or kitten when you feel you are ready. Always remember that your life is amazingly richer because of the time that you shared with your pet.

Hi there, my name is Boomer and I’m patiently waiting to find my pawfect match at RSPCA Burwood East. I’m ready to find my permanent home with my new loving family. I’m a very unique dog and due to my breed have a few requirements in my new home in order for me to fit in, so it’s important that you research my breed before coming in to adopt. I need to go to an adult home because I’ve proven to be too boisterous for children. I’m best suited to acreage instead of the suburbs because it will allow me to be my loudest without bothering your neighbours. Suitable fencing is important around the household so that I am properly secured in the yard. Another canine companion is very important because I have energy to burn. I love to follow my nose so lots of enrichment games that involve sniffing would be lots of fun and keep me entertained and content. Cancer screening saves valuable lives IN the lead-up to International Women’s Day on 8 March, South Western Melbourne Medicare Local (SWMML) is encouraging women of all ages to get screened for cancers and help prevent the preventable. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Inspiring Change’ and with some of the lowest screening rates in Victoria lying within SWMMLs catchment, the organisation is urging women to make a positive change to their health and inspire those around them to do so as well. Dr Silva raises concerns over a large number of women in the region who are missing out on intimate health checks once they have completed their child bearing, and urges women of all backgrounds to access the important health care services on offer in the community.

Soma Nair has 15 years’ experience in traditional therapies.

Fight disease with nature Soma’s interest in naturopathy and ayurveda was aroused at a very young age. “I used to see my father treat friends and family with simple home remedies. “He would ask us to collect leaves of different plants, put them in packets and label their usage. “I also helped him to make pills and powders and watched him make decoctions boiling different herbs. “I was also happy as these remedies had no side effect and most of the ingredients were part of the food and were easily available in the kitchen cupboard, she says. Soma gained a diploma in naturopathy and yoga in India and did training in panchkarma treatments from Kerala in India, which is the home of ayurveda. “Everyone wants a healthy body and healthy mind. “Disturbances in health happen due to various reasons. “It can be lifestyle, food habits and stress that can come

Saints give Dogs hell

FROM the moment he walked into the Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club, Steve Chapman knew he had some talent on his hands. Having previously coached Dandenong to a premiership, Chapman signed with the Bulldogs before the 2013-’14 season and wasted no time taking his winning ways across Melbourne to Farnsworth Avenue. Initially, Footscray was the surprise packet of the competition after a hot start to the season. But this was no flash in the pan, and going into the final round, a win will see the club finish the homeand-away competition on top of the ladder. “When I was talking about the job initially, I couldn’t put my finger on why Footscray hadn’t been involved in finals,” Chapman said. “I felt that if we were anywhere near what I believed the side could be then we would make the finals. I never thought we could be as high as second or indeed, if we finish the last round with a win, that we could finish on top.” With finals just one week away and despite Footscray’s place in the post-season looking likely since the opening rounds of the season, the Bulldogs haven’t been getting ahead of themselves. Apart from a couple of passing

shorts FOOTSCRAY Edgewater opener Dean Russ is poised to become the 840th player to represent the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in first-class cricket after he was selected in the 12-man squad to face Tasmania in a Bupa Sheffield Shield match at the MCG this week. Russ, who turned 28 on Thursday, has struck 641 runs, at an average of 45.8, in Bartercard Premier Cricket this season while also impressing in the Toyota Futures League, where he is the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 350 runs. Russ is joined in the squad by Peter Handscomb, who amassed 212 in his previous match for St Kilda on February 15. They replace Cameron White and Glenn Maxwell in the side who are both in South Africa with the Australian Twenty20 side. The match will see a return of day/night Sheffield Shield cricket after it was first trialled in the late 1990s. “It is all a little bit surreal at the moment,” Russ said. “It is fantastic. I am looking forward to getting stuck into it all on Monday.”

Winter-Irving then got in on the act, taking the wicket of Matthew Chasemore to make it 3/30. From there, St Kilda managed to settle its innings and will resume this week at 3/57.

Thomas Moffat and Graeme Rummans are the not out batsmen on 37 and 10 respectively. “Jake bowled very well,” Russ said. “To get those two wickets and then to follow up with Chasemore was very good for us. If we can get a couple of wickets early in the session then we are a massive chance.”

Russ suits up for Bushrangers

By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater will need to bring its best with the ball this week after a tough first day in its Premier Cricket clash with St Kilda. In the final round of the season, the top two teams squared off at Mervyn Hughes Oval with the Bulldogs winning the toss and electing to bat first. Despite the early loss of Anthony Barton, the decision looked to be a good one as Footscray moved to 1/47 with in-form duo Travis Dean and captain Dean Russ at the crease. But it was the loss of wickets in groups which cost the Bulldogs throughout the afternoon. Footscray lost Dean and Dylan Kight in the space of seven runs and then later in the innings, lost 4/6. Coming up against arguably the best team in the competition, it was always going to be hard to post a strong score from there and the Bulldogs struggled. Thanks to a handy 27 from number nine batsman Hamish Winter-Irving, Footscray reached 153 before being bowled out in the 61st over. Russ was the top scorer for the innings with 53 while Shanuka Dissanayaka was the next best with 31. “We were disappointed to make the score we did,” Russ said. “We thought we should have been able to push 200 plus but we didn’t really string too many partnerships together. “They bowled exceptionally well and it was a typical St Kilda performance really. They are a very disciplined side.” With 26 overs left in the day’s play, Footscray needed quick wickets and Jake Haberfield delivered. The gun quick removed Peter Handscomb

comments, a finals campaign hasn’t been spoken about in great detail among the players and coaching staff. “I haven’t let the guys and I haven’t wanted them to (speak about finals),” Chapman said. “I wanted them to talk about what was coming up on Saturday and talk about literally the first session. “I didn’t want them to get distracted or get ahead of themselves. I have got a group of lads here that haven’t had a lot of finals experience or success. I think it is important to keep their feet on the ground and ask them to consider what is coming up rather than what potentially could happen in x amount of weeks’ time.” Footscray will find out its round one finals opponent at the conclusion of its match with St Kilda. Regardless of which team the Bulldogs take on, one player going into the match in hot form is Travis Dean. The number three batsman hit his first Premier Cricket first grade century against Dandenong last month and then followed it up with a brilliant 95 when taking on Camberwell. Chapman is confident that more runs will follow for the rising star. “I think he (Dean) has come of age,” Chapman said.

WEST Newport has survived the cut and will play in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf finals series after easily accounting for Gellibrand on Saturday. Finishing just one point ahead of Melton Centrals to sneak into the top four, West Newport only needed 52 overs to ensure first innings points - making 226 in response to Gellibrand’s 141 from day one. This weekend West Newport is due to play Williamstown Colts, who finished on top of the ladder with nine wins and 60 points. Bellbridge will host Grand United in the other semi-final to be played this Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile in the WDCA’s A Grade Matting competition, Point Cook’s superior percentage got it across the line over Williamstown Imperials for the final spot in the top four. Both clubs ended the season on 39 points, with Melton Centrals, WLSC Marshalls and Wyndham Vale also making the cut ahead of semi-final weekend. SPOTSWOOD has missed out on the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s North Division finals series after failing to get past Laverton on the final day of the home-and-away season on Saturday. On day one of the clash at Laverton Park, the host posted a formidable 250 runs before Spotswood survived three overs out in the middle to go into day two at 0/1. On Saturday the Woodsmen faced another 44 overs but could never really get going with the bat, falling well short of their target on their way to just 134. Spotswood finished fifth on the table, almost 10 points shy of fourth-placed and finals-bound Doutta Stars. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North A1 Division, Seddon upset Taylors Lakes at home to finish fourth on the table, and will play the Altona Roosters in this weekend’s semi-final. Taylors Lakes and Sunshine Druids will also play for a spot in the grand final.

Steve Chapman is preparing for Footscray Edgewater’s finals Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI assault. 107204 “There are a lot of people around the traps that reckon this kid will play for Victoria within a couple of years. He was the best under-19 cricketer going around in the country a couple of years ago. He has always had it in him. I think it was just a case of him working it out for himself.

“The 95 runs that he got were every bit as classy as the hundred he got against Dandenong. It was a completely different set of circumstances from the Dandenong game where his ability to hit the gaps and be fluent was every bit as skilful as his ability to leave in the game at Camberwell.”

A BUMPER opening weekend of blockbuster fixtures will kick-start Football Federation Victoria’s brand new National Premier Leagues competition - which is set to begin Thursday week. Melbourne Knights, Green Gully and Werribee City will be the West’s three NPL representatives, while Sunshine George Cross and St Albans will feature in the NPL1 competition. The Knights will start their NPL campaign next Friday night at home to Northcote City - before spending the entire month of April at Knights Stadium - including a round three battle with Werribee City. The following day Green Gully and the Bees will face each other at the Cavaliers’ Green Gully Reserve for their round one clash. Also in action on the first Saturday of the new season are Sunshine George Cross and St Albans in NPL1. The Georgies will host Brunswick City at Chaplin Reserve, while the Saints will hit the road to take on Springvale White Eagles. The two Brimbank neighbours will meet at Chaplin Reserve in round five.

Clubbers still in the chase By ADEM SARICAOGLU YARRAVILLE Club came into the weekend needing a miracle to survive the cut in the final home-and-away round of Turf Cricket’s Senior Division. The Clubbers were fifth on the table and desperate to beat lowly Strathmore to give themselves a fighting chance of sneaking into the four. But after the opening day’s play on the road at Syd McGain Oval, the VTCA’s most successful club of recent memory looked as though it was out of finals contention. Yarraville Club collapsed through the middle order to make only 132 in its first dig before Strathmore replied with 4/102 in the final 29 overs of the day. On Saturday the situation looked dire for the Clubbers, and as it turned out, their poor fortunes at Syd McGain Oval couldn’t be overcome as the host posted 183 to get the first innings points. However, after knocking over Strathmore within the best part of 25 overs, the Clubbers again took to the crease in an attempt to salvage something. The end result proved invaluable, though the match itself couldn’t be won. Yarraville Club made a very handy 163 in its second dig and with the help of fellow finals hopefuls Old Mentonians and Bentleigh both failing to win their respective games, the Clubbers survived to claim fourth spot by just half a point ahead of Old Mentonians. “We didn’t take our wickets, which was a little bit disappointing because we obviously needed to do it to try to win the game, but we didn’t give up,” Clubbers captain-coach Emmett Bronca told Star on Sunday. “Only just making the four, those extra efforts in making those runs yesterday really did help.” In a repeat of last year’s semi-final, Yarraville Club will this Saturday travel to Section Road to take on the might of Greenvale for a spot in the grand final. While the Clubbers will go in as the clear underdog, Bronca said his team will be keen to avenge the 22-run loss they suffered in last year’s semi. “Everyone is just absolutely pumped with the fact that we’ve got an opportunity,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing, and we’re definitely not going to waste it.”

Carlson gets his big break

Drive to win pays off big for Stephanie By LIAM TWOMEY SHE may still be a teenager, but that hasn’t stopped young gun golfer Stephanie Bunque from achieving something most people will only ever dream of. The Maribyrnong College student pulled on the Green and Gold to represent Australia in the Junior Pacific Cup earlier this year. The tournament saw rising stars from both Australia and America go head-to-head in San Diego. “It was the coolest thing I have ever done,” Bunque said of the experience. “We played one invitational tournament down at San Diego. In the second tournament, which was the Junior Pacific Cup, it was Australia versus the US and I played pretty well. “My partner and I won a couple of times but the overall Australian team lost. It was a great experience.” Since returning Bunque has continued to ply her trade at the Medway Golf Club where the 16-year-

old plays off an incredible handicap of just three. “I started playing when I was about eight and then I started playing properly when I was about 10,” she said. “I was always pretty long as a little kid. Only recently I have started to get my swing together and started to hit it pretty well.” There will be no slowing down for Bunque who already has her eye on more representative honours, initially with Victoria before hoping to compete for her country again in the future. “It (playing for Australia) has just given me a whole heap of confidence with my game,” Bunque said. “Just to be selected was amazing. “I’m just taking baby steps at the moment. I want to get into the state squad first and I want to do more interstate competitions and try and get more serious about my competitions. “From there I will be hoping for national squads in the years to come.”

WITH sunny skies, hardly any wind and moderate temperatures, brave break-aways dominated the Footscray Cycling Club’s Eric Turner Memorial Championship, held at Drake Boulevard in Altona on the weekend. The feature race was full of surprises, with past club champion Graham Carlson making the most of a full race break-away to claim his first championship in many years. Carlson was part of a strong break-away that included the in-form Miles DaCosta, returning from injury Anthony Garnier, veteran hardman Ben O’Leary and sprinter Adrian Hanson. After a short break-away which DaCosta and the in-form Dom Dudkiewicz tried to get a break happening, the second break formed and immediately set about working to build a lead with each rider doing his bit and none, according to Carlson, shirking their responsibility. “The guys were great today,” Carlson said. “They all worked so hard. Drake Boulevard is a great circuit and it was what brought me back. That and being reminded by Paul Redenbach that we come to these races to win.” The last lap saw the breakaway inevitably break apart, with Carlson crossing the line clear of the immensely happy pairing of DaCosta and Garnier in second and third. In other results, the B Grade race was won by Brendan Quigley while Johann Birk and Dennis Tito took out the C and D Grade races respectively.

Winning streak By LIAM TWOMEY

CITY West continued its outstanding start to the Victorian Netball League season with a victory against Monash University Storm on Wednesday night. The Falcons were in front from the get go and maintained a healthy lead over the Storm throughout the next three quarters. But it was in the final term when City West produced some of its best netball. Marg Lind’s side scored 17 goals and restricted Monash to just six to secure the 17-goal win. The result capped off a busy seven days for the Falcons after they also enjoyed wins against Fed Uni Ballarat Pride (61-26) and DC North East Blaze (59-35). Lind was rapt with how her side was able to handle its busy schedule. “We have been performing pretty well and they were certainly solid in all three games which is pleasing,” she said.

“I felt like they would be fatigued with three games in under seven days, so we actually didn’t train at all in the seven-day period. “A lot of the girls also had state training too so we were pretty mindful of that. Essentially, those who are in the state team, they actually had another game as well with the state team. “We said to them that if their performance against Blaze on Saturday night was solid, which meant we had three wins under our belt, we wouldn’t train them on Sunday, which we didn’t do, and I think that paid off.” The trio of victories maintains City West’s unbeaten start to the VNL season with the Falcons on top of the table with a 4-0 record. When round five of the season gets underway this week, the Falcons will take on third-placed Geelong. The game will have an interesting dynamic, with Geelong now be-

Memo on making grounds available

Maggie Lind (shown playing in last year’s VNL grand-final) is part of an undefeated City West Falcons outfit. 103257 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT ing coached by former Falcon Gerard Murphy. “I think he (Murphy) has done some good work with them and we certainly won’t be underestimating them,” Lind said. “Even less so because he has

come from our stable and he knows how we run. That is going to be a little bit of an advantage to him, but I guess the same applies to us. We know his coaching methods. I’m hoping to get another win, so that we go into the break with a clean slate.”

LOCAL footy is back with VFL practice matches, the WRFL interleague squad in full training for the metropolitan championships and my mobile ringing a heck of a lot more. Some clubs are telling me they are having issues with ground availability, even those that are not shared with cricket. I don’t understand why some councils have this negative attitude. The grounds are built to be used, not looked at. We are trying to promote participation in sport. Why make it so difficult? The other point of contention is the time it takes to get some very small jobs, like covering a cricket wicket, done. The frustration this causes is most unnecessary and does not bode well for the rest of the year. West Footscray Football Club is holding its season launch this Thursday at the Pound Cafe at Whitten Oval from 7pm. Western Bulldogs Director Barry Hall and WRFL guru Steve Thom will be speaking along with Trevor Davies the senior coach. Good luck to the Roosters for 2014. MIXED fortunes for the VFL sides with Werribee having a narrow win over Box Hill Hawks and Williamstown losing by a few goals to Essendon. The results mean little and both clubs will be happy to have the first run under their belt. The rivals meet this Saturday at Aegis Park with the Development squad at 10am followed by the seniors at 1pm. GMHBA Geelong Regional Manager Deryn Mobbs joined the Board of the Werribee football club at last week’s AGM which also saw John Nicol returned as President. Werribee has also confirmed that its round 8 game against Richmond will be played at the home of the Torquay Tigers, Spring Creek Reserve on Saturday May 24th. INTERESTING times in local cricket, Werribee lost its first First XI game for the year, despite some batting heroics from Tim O’Brien who made an unbeaten 69 in the run chase. They play second placed Bayswater this weekend in a one dayer at Avalon Airport Oval. Interesting letter I saw from Daniel Gaylor, the President of Grand United Cricket Club, to the Williamstown District Cricket Association calling for massive changes to keep the competition alive. West Newport and Willy Imps are leaving the competition next year and all clubs are finding it hard to field teams. Grand United a powerhouse club has lost three teams in two seasons. Daniel has a very strong point, I hope he gets a hearing. Adam Contessa bobbed up with a six wicket performance and two knocks over 30, to help the Yarraville Club CC make the finals in the VTCA. They will play Greenvale in the semi final this weekend at Greenvale.

Top coaches run program to be the best By LIAM TWOMEY NICOLE Richardson and Marg Lind know a thing or two about getting the best out of athletes. The pair run the netball program at specialised sports school Maribyrnong College and the results speak for themselves. Currently, 11 girls in the program are competing in the Victorian Netball League, the premier competition in the state. “They are massive numbers for a local school,” Richardson said. “To be able to have that many athletes or students playing in the premier domestic competition in Victoria is just a huge bonus for the school.”

Currently, at the Maribyrnong program, five girls play for City West Falcons, two play for Ballarat, two play for VU Western Lightning and another two play for North East Blaze. Not surprisingly, when they come together and train at Maribyrnong, the level of play is more than impressive. Richardson, who coaches at the City West Falcons with Lind, said having so many girls in the VNL also gave the younger members of the program a first hand look at what it took to get to the top. “I think from my point of view it is just a wonderful opportunity for those junior players to be exposed to those senior players and just see

that, hang on a minute this is the training, work ethic and intensity that I need to pitch at. “If I keep doing this, there is a possible pathway opportunity to bigger and better things for me. Whether that be zone academy, whether that be state 17s or state 19s or VNL,” Richardson said. As well as VNL players, Maribyrnong has also produced state representatives in the under 17 age group (Libby Birch) and in the under 19 age group (Katherine Dicker and Andrea Tai). Despite the large number of outstanding athlete results and the standard of the program being at an alltime high, Richardson is looking to help more rising stars reach the top.

“Our role from an individual perspective is to continue the development of each of the individual players and to prepare them for upcoming selections and to get as many as we can through what we would call the Netball Victoria player pathways,” Richardson said. “The schools is at the moment producing zone academy players which is the base entry into Netball Victoria’s player pathway. “They are producing Victorian players both at the 17 and under and at the 19 and under age group and they are also putting students through to the domestic competition in the state.”

Yarraville salutes a century

Georgia’s a hit with the stick By ADEM SARICAOGLU GUN hockey talent Georgia Hopkins didn’t seem to have much of a choice. The sport was already flowing through the soon-to-be 16-yearold’s veins before she even picked up a hockey stick. Hopkins’ parents met at the Footscray Hockey Club and her two older siblings also picked up the sport at a young age. But the young up-and-coming midfielder and defender may well lay claim to being the best hockey talent in the household. Hopkins has become a regular starter coming through the ranks as part of a number of junior Victorian teams in recent years. In January at the National Indoor Championships, Hopkins was again donning the big V as part of the state’s under-15s team when she managed to claim Player of the Tournament honours. The youngster said she was “pretty stoked” to get the gong. “You don’t really expect to win, obviously, but I thought I played pretty well and I was pretty happy with the way that I played,” Hopkins said. “I guess you never really imagine yourself winning it until you do.” Dominating at junior level is one

thing, but Hopkins has also managed to deliver in the senior ranks. Last year she was chosen to be the vice-captain of Footscray’s senior team in Hockey Victoria’s top flight Premier League competition. Hopkins said rubbing shoulders with experienced team-mates and opponents has helped her game develop in recent times. “Obviously it’s a big step up from your normal juniors or the state tournaments but it’s pretty good, and I think I hold my own,” Hopkins said. “I like the challenge of coming against the bigger bodies with more experience, but the team’s really good in supporting us to make sure that we’re capable enough to take it up to the older, more experienced players. “It’s been a good experience and just helped me mature a lot with my hockey and outside of hockey as well, I guess.” With the future looking bright, the Bulldogs vice-captain said she hopes to now take her talents to the next level as she settles more and more into senior hockey. “I just hope to keep enjoying it and hopefully manage my body enough to be able to get to higher levels and hopefully one day just take it as far as I can,” she said.

MELBOURNE’S summer of tennis may be over but the celebrations are only just beginning at the Yarraville Tennis Club. In a time when a lot of local sporting clubs are struggling, Yarraville is powering to its latest amazing milestone. The club is officially 100-years-old. Yarraville competition secretary Barb Kelly said it was a great feeling to celebrate such an important achievement. “I think the committee have pushed things a lot and it is probably the only big club in the area, certainly the city of Maribyrnong,” she said. “I think people like that. We have a range of weekend tennis and night pennant so there are plenty of options for people to play tennis.” The club will celebrate the centenary on Sunday 16 March. “We have invited many of our old members and quite a few have been able to come which is great,” Kelly said. “Certainly, a lot of our current members will be attending as well. The mayor will also be there to say a few words.” With 100 years on the board, there are no plans to slow down at Yarraville with the club hoping to build on its rich history further into the future. Kelly said any new players or potential members were welcome to come down and play. “We do have organised social tennis on two evenings a week. People seem to really enjoy that. “We also have weekend tennis and mid-week tennis available. “Also, one of the best things about the club is our coach. He is excellent. He coaches seniors and juniors and if anyone is interested they can contact the club.”
