Family crime focus By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO DESPITE a decrease in nearly all crime categories Melton’s top cop is warning would-be offenders that local police will not become complacent. Inspector Stephen Mutton told Star the results of Victoria Police’s latest crime statistics were pleasing, however assault, and in particular family violence, continued to plague the area. The statistics released last week show total crime has increased by 6.3 per cent from 8464 in January 2012 to December 2012 to 8998 in January 2013 to December 2013. Assaults have increased by 8.4 per cent from 1164 to 1262 with 613 family

violence incidents reported. Insp Mutton said violence within the home is a priority for police across the state and said in Melton there had been a reduction in repeat offences. The recent figures also show a reduction in property damage, burglary, theft of motor vehicles and theft from motor vehicles. However Insp Mutton said the months since December 2013 have seen a spike in offences across the municipalities. “Even though the figures are good, we’re not getting complacent because there are many challenges ahead,” Insp Mutton said.

“The decrease in robbery is pleasing, but we still need to reduce the incidences of assault which continue to occur both inside and outside the home. “Although there are significant decreases in property crime offences, over the past two months we have been experiencing a rise in burglaries and vehicle crime throughout the Melton Police Service Area.” Insp Mutton said the specialised Burglary Unit within the Melton Criminal Investigation Unit had continued to make arrests resulting in residential burglaries decreasing, but the area continued to see a rise in ‘other’ burglary categories such as commercial/shop premises, garages/ sheds, and new houses under construc-

tion where thieves are stealing white goods, bathroom and laundry fittings, copper piping, and building materials. “Safety committees who meet regularly have been established at high risk community locations including the Woodgrove Shopping Centre and also at the Melton Railway Station, where police are working with council and other partners to create a safer environment.” A specialised tasking unit targeting recidivist crime offenders and drug dealers has successfully executed a number of search warrants and made crucial arrests. MORE than 1100 people have signed a petition calling for an overpass or underpass to be built at the Melton Highway level crossing. Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins has submitted the petition of 1139 signatures to State Parliament. She said the crossing’s boom gates are down for 52 minutes every two hours during peak times. The RACV’s roads and traffic manager, Dave Jones, has labelled the crossing as the “number one location” in Sydenham and Taylors Lakes for congestion. A Facebook group titled ‘Melton

Highway NEEDS an Underpass/ Overpass’ has gathered more than 2500 supporters. Ms Hutchins spoke to Star last week after she visited residents of Victoria St, which runs adjacent to the Watergardens railway line. “These residents are telling me they can’t get out of their own street in the mornings onto the Melton Highway due to the sheer volume of traffic backed up,” she said. “They said it’s been noticeably different in the 12 months since the line was electrified (to Sunbury). “What I’m surprised by is the reaction and overwhelming public anger at the traffic and the problems

created by it.” She said the petition would be ongoing and a committee of residents hopes to meet in mid-March to get a campaign underway. Ms Hutchins said she hopes the campaign will lead to Labor putting the crossing on a list of 50 they have promised to fix, if the party wins November’s election. Dorian Papadopoulos, who started the ‘Melton Highway NEEDS an Underpass/Overpass’ Facebook, said he has been amazed by the tremendous response from the petitions. “It just goes to show that our entire community agree that this

A spokesperson for Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the government had outlined more than $400 million towards removing level crossings across Melbourne. A VicRoads spokesperson said to assist traffic flow at the Melton Highway crossing, they recently improved the operation of surrounding traffic lights.

THE fight to keep Reg Geary House continued last month when Melton MP Don Nardella tabled a petition with 146 signatures at Parliament. The petition called on the Napthine Government to stop the closure of the aged care facility in June this year. A petition with a further 700 figures was presented to the State Government late last year. Western Health announced in October that it will be closing Reg Geary House as the ageing building no longer mets the needs of residents. When announcing the closure a spokesperson for Western Health said the changes were a result of the very small size of the service, with only 30 beds. There are currently five aged care facilities, including Reg Geary House, operating within the City of Melton, with very limited vacancies. Mr Nardella also slammed the Victorian Government for not taking a stand against Tony Abbott’s cuts to 80 regional projects.

Residents move past the tipping point Did you see By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON and Brimbank residents have vowed to stop at nothing to save their neighbourhood from becoming the “rubbish capital of Australia”. Hundreds of residents met in Caroline Springs last week to initiate action against the proposal to massively extend a landfill in Ravenhall. In November last year Boral lodged a planning amendment with Melton City Council to dramatically increase the size of the existing tip to 179 million cubic metres or the equivalent of 105 times the size of the MCG. Residents fear the landfill will be filled with garbage, including contaminated soil, piled to the height of a 15-storey building. In attendance at the meeting was

Melton City Council mayor Bob Turner, deputy mayor Kathy Majdlik and Cambridge Ward councillor Nola Dunn, Western Metropolitan Region MPs Bernie Finn and Cesar Melham and Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz. At the time of the meeting already 2000 people had signed a petition to stop the extension. Long-time Deer Park resident and committee member of Stop the Tip Sean McAlpine-Jones told Star the proposed tip would mean residents across Melbourne’s West would constantly live with the stench of the landfill - which if built would be the largest in the southern hemisphere. At the meeting Mr McAlpineJones called on local politicians to demand that the EPA and Boral make an ethical decision and stop the landfill.

“The smell just seeps through, you can’t get away from it, right up to St Albans and Braybrook,” he said. Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association President Nathan Miles also attended the meeting and said “emotions were running high”. Mr Miles said the proposed landfill had the potential to “destroy the Western Suburbs” with property prices destined to drop and he vowed to sell his property if the tip is expanded. “The Melton municipality will be known as the rubbish capital of Victoria,” he said. He put the onus on the council to make sure the matter is resolved with the fairest outcome for residents. “The council needs to stay on course with this … and see it

through to the Supreme Court if it has to.” Melton City Council’s planning services manager Bob Baggio said the council had received an application from Tract Consultants, acting on behalf of Boral, to amend their current landfill permit by increasing the area of the proposed landfill to match the area of Boral’s quarrying operations. Mr Baggio said the application has been publicly advertised to affected landowners and occupiers and the council has already received 964 objections to date with council officers in the process of assessing the application. Residents can still make a written submission to the council on the application. “The matter will be considered by council in due course once all relevant issues have been considered,” Mr Baggio said.

The incident took place on Saturday 8 February, at 2pm, at the bus stop outside the Macs Hotel, Melton, and anyone with information should contact Detective Paul Barrow or Detective Josie Gunnell at Melton Police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Meanwhile, police continue to hunt for an offender who broke into a home in Dartmouth Crt, Burnside, in the early hours of Thursday, 13 February while the occupants were sleeping and stole wallets, phones, cameras and DVDs. A similar incident occurred in Darling Court, Taylors Hill, during the early hours of Monday 17 February. On this occasion offenders entered an unlocked house and stole computers, mobile phones and a camera from downstairs while the occupants slept upstairs. Between 4.30am and 5am on Tuesday, 18 February offenders unsuccessfully attempted to break into an electrical trade store on Westwood Drive, Ravenhall. A red Mazda 121 was sighted at the location and the occupant is described as a male in his twenties, caucasian, tan coloured hat, yellow T-shirt, black long sleeve jumper, tan shorts, black socks and white runners. Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information about this incident. And firebugs continue to plague the area with three young males seen setting fire to junk mail and throwing it onto the victim’s front lawn area. The incident occurred at about 6am on Sunday 16 February.

Cops: ‘your number’s up’ POLICE will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to volume crime across Melton and Caroline Springs when the Operations Response Unit joins forces with uniform police to target recent increases in burglaries and thefts. The ORU will crackdown on residential and commercial burglaries and theft from and theft of motor vehicles, as well as public order and traffic offences. Police will focus on train stations, shopping centres and new housing estates. Melton Inspector Stephen Mutton said police working alongside

the ORU would provide a highlyvisible presence to focus on reducing high volume crime. “Having the support of a specialist unit such as the ORU means we will have a higher visible presence on our streets,” Insp Mutton said. “We have already received some positive feedback from the community that seeing more police out and about makes them feel safer.” Already the ORU have made a number of arrests including three men believed to be responsible for a number of alleged theft of and theft from motor vehicle offences com-

mitted in the Melton Police Service Area. A 17-year-old Braybrook man and a 28-year-old Melton man were arrested and charged with various motor vehicle offences on 25 February. They were remanded in custody to appear at Sunshine Court last Thursday. A 17-year-old Melton man was also charged with various motor vehicle offences and has been bailed to appear at a children’s court on a later date. Inspector Mutton urged the com-

munity to take simple preventative steps, such as locking their car and house doors, to avoid becoming a victim. “Most thefts are opportunistic. It takes a matter of seconds for a thief to open the door and take anything you have left on the seat of your car. Remember to lock up and take any valuables with you.” “Lock the windows and doors to your house and make it harder for someone to get in without being seen. It’s also important to report any suspicious behaviour and activity to police.”

WOMEN across Melton are being encouraged to attend an exhibition showcasing the work of a prominent human rights organisation. The Zonta Club of Melton will host the exhibition which will demonstrate a variety of information regarding local and international projects that it has been involved in which help aid the causes of women both within the municipality and the wider community. Long-time member of the club Faye O’Shea said the exhibition is the first of its kind in the area and will help residents become aware of the good work the club provides for women. The exhibition will also coincide with International Women’s Day. “Zonta is about advancing the status of women worldwide,” Ms O’Shea said. “Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognised as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.” The exhibition is being held at the Visitor Information Centre in Melton from 3 to 15 March. A CAROLINE Springs resident is disappointed after he claims at least 15 trees have died along Caroline Springs Boulevard in the past 12 months. Bob Jones, who has lived in the area since 1999, told Star the trees which line the entrance into the estate have not been watered all summer, with the exception of the newly planted trees. Mr Jones said a number of calls to Melton City Council in the last month have left him with no answers and while he understands it is the responsibility of the contractor to water the trees, he believes the council has also been neglectful of the flora in the area. “We’re paying our rates and I’m sick of their inaction,” Mr Jones said. “It really has made me very angry. Mr Wood said the new trees are watered about three to four times a week by the contractor. “The extreme heat we have experienced over this summer has had a significant impact on our tree stock across the city with a number of newly planted trees dying over the course of the summer months,” he said. “All of the newly planted trees that have died will be replaced at no cost to council under the terms of the engagement.” Mr Wood said the council officers have monitored the planting program throughout the process and have been happy with the performance of the contractor to date. “With the assistance of the contractor we are confident the new trees will establish well and be an asset to our community.”

Lynch leads Rams By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Rockbank coaching hand-over from Leigh Sporle to Robbie Lynch has been a smooth one, according to the new Rams coach. Lynch, who last year was Sporle’s right hand man as the club’s fitness and conditioning coach, was handed the senior coaching reins in January after Sporle moved interstate for work. Having already established himself at Ian Cowie Reserve after pulling on the boots for two games in 2013, Lynch said the transition has been a successful one. “I pretty much did all the training and most of the match day stuff as well, because Leigh played a few games (in 2013),” Lynch said. “So while it’s not a shock, I guess the foundation’s already there to be in the position to take over and be comfortable with it as well. “I went over (to Rockbank) the same time as Leigh did, so I’ve pretty much been a part of everything that’s gone on. “So my lead into taking on the role has been pretty smooth, not

I’ve already built up that rapport and that respect with them.” The Rams have almost become a forgotten entity in the Riddell District Football League in recent years, but in 2013 they did scramble

their way to a 6-10 record. Just as his predecessor was, Lynch is keen to put Rockbank back on the RDFL map in 2014. And with the help of some fresh new signings and a renewed sense of belief within the playing group, the Rams may well just turn some heads

this coming season. “The culture was one of the things we addressed when we first walked into the club,” Lynch said. “It was about just having the respect of the other teams in the league, respect among themselves and to get the club back up there where it should be, and also to just try and provide a hardworking culture. “So while not being too extravagant, we’re really demanding of what we want from the guys on Saturdays and that they deliver.” Among Rockbank’s noteworthy inclusions are Malcolm Lynch, Isiah Stevens, Chris Warrell and Leigh Sobotnicki, while goal-kicker Matthew Krul is one of the major departures - headed for RDFL rival, Diggers Rest. Lynch has been reluctant to set a particular measure for Rockbank’s success in 2014, but did tell Star he’ll back his Rams in for the entire year. “Every game we’re looking at as winnable - that’s the mentality we’re going to take in,” he said.

The Storm, needing a win and other results to go its way coming into the final two-dayer of the summer ahead of the finals, gave itself every chance after a stellar day against competition frontrunner Pascoe Vale Central last week.
