■ Bracks calls for transport change

Ferry service vital By XAVIER SMERDON FORMER Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has called for a start to planning for a ferry service to run out of the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Mr Bracks was in Werribee last week to address 130 members of the Committee for Wyndham, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the West. Mr Bracks said with the growing number of people moving to the West, a ferry service would be vital. “It has to happen really with the population growth we’re talking about,” Mr Bracks said. “I mentioned before about the doubling of the population in this region. That will build a demand which can’t be met by just road and rail, and having an integrated ferry system will be built around that in the future,” he said. Mr Bracks said planning for the ferry service should start as soon as possible. “I think it’s just going to come when the population demand is big enough and therefore it’s going to drive the economics of it,” he said. “But we should start planning for it now because it is going to be vital in the future. “I was very impressed with what happened in the city of Brisbane on the Brisbane River with the ferry service. “It was lampooned as something that would be a white elephant. It’s now extraordinarily popular and it’s probably the best way to get around Brisbane. “It could happen here as well and we need to take a risk on that at some point.” The idea of a ferry service running from the Western Suburbs has been floated by the Liberal Government for several years but it has been consistently knocked back by Labor politicians. Mr Bracks also supported the possible creation of a committee for the West which would advocate for investment and change in the region. “I don’t think it would hurt, and it would seem logical and sensible and I think it’s got more chance of success

is going to be important,” Mr Bracks said. “If that is the vehicle, that would be a very good vehicle for it I would have thought.” In June last year Star

reported that the Committee for Wyndham was positioning itself to become a West-wide advocacy group. Mr Bracks was Premier of Victoria from 1999 to 2007.

A BRAVE sister and brother team will shave their heads to support a cause that is close to their hearts. Next month, Therese Grimes, 17, and her 10-yearold brother Ben McDonald will brave the razor as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. The Altona North resident decided to shave her head last year in support of a number of family members who have been diagnosed with cancer over recent years. “My grandma got diagnosed with a brain tumour and had to

have chemotherapy, (I saw) the toll it took on her ... she had to lose some of her hair as well,” she said. Therese said one of her cousins also had leukaemia, with her aunty having been diagnosed with breast cancer and another with lung cancer. “A lot of people around me have had cancer, so I’ve seen how it affected lives and having to lose their hair is a massive part of that experience,” she said. The siblings are trying to raise $5000 for the Leukaemia Foundation and will donate their shaved locks to make a wig.

A 48-YEAR-OLD North Sunshine man has been charged with attempted murder over last week’s stabbing at Footscray’s Western Hospital. Kareem Al-Salami was formally charged at the Footscray police station and was taken to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a remand hearing, where he did not seek bail. The charge comes after the stabbing of 43-year-old neurosurgeon Dr Michael Wong, who walked into the Western Hospital foyer around 8.30am on Tuesday 18 February to start his shift when he was stabbed multiple times over various parts of his body, causing life-threatening injuries. A number of people were in the foyer at the time of the attack and quickly came to the aid of Dr Wong, taking him away for life-saving surgery. Footscray police were called to the hospital just before 8.30am, where the offender immediately dropped the knife and surrendered. Inspector Tony Long said it was believed the offender may have pointed the knife at other people, but no-one else was injured. Dr Wong is a full time neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Head of Neurosurgery at the Western Hospital. He also consults and operates at Epworth Eastern Hospital and John Fawkner Hospital. He looks after patients with intracranial problems, spinal problems and peripheral nerves disorder and has a special interest in Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery. Dr Wong remained in a serious but stable condition as the time Star went to print. Insp Long praised the quick thinking and bravery of the hospital staff and members of the public that helped Dr Wong after the attack. Western Health directed patients and visitors to other hospital entrances last Tuesday as police cordoned off the Gordon St entrance and foyer as a crime scene. Western Health acting CEO Russell Harrison said these kinds of attacks against hospital staff were “significantly rare”.

Road rage warning By NICOLE VALICEK HOBSONS Bay Police have warned motorists to keep calm on the roads with an increased number of road rage incidents reported over the last few months. Hobsons Bay Acting Inspector Jenny Wilson said police are concerned with the number of road rage incidents that have become a trend in recent months. “Police are concerned in relation to increased incidents of road rage that seem to be instigated along the

Princes Highway between Altona and Wyndham,” Insp Wilson said. Insp Wilson said an increased usage of the freeway and road works that have been in place for some time could be prompting the incidents. “It appears road users are getting frustrated.” She said a number of incidents started by vehicles travelling too close to the car in front of them and vehicles cutting each other off. “This can result in incidents oc-

curring where vehicle occupants have disputes that roll into physical assaults.” “We have more road users than ever using our roads and people need to be mindful of other road users and giving everyone space, (due to the) high level of roadworks.” “People need to consider there is road works all way to Altona and Wyndham and keep in mind during road works you’re required to drop speed to 80km/h ... it can be congested.” Last Wednesday a road rage inci-

dent resulted in a significant physical confrontation after a driver was followed by another car when they exited the freeway. Insp Wilson said if you are in a dispute with someone not to engage with them, or if followed drive to a public place or your nearest police station and not to your home. “You should not drive to an isolated location, I wouldn’t advocate getting out of the car at all if feeling scared or apprehensive. Drive to a public place, stop and call triplezero.”

Forum aims to fix ‘failure’ of loop By NICOLE VALICEK A COMMUNITY advocate group is holding a public meeting to discuss the failures and future of the “neglected” Altona Loop and is inviting commuters to attend. Jennifer Williams, an Altona Loop commuter and member of community advocates the Altona Loop Group said the forum was a chance to hear from community, transport experts and elected representatives about how they think the Altona Loop problems can be fixed in 2014. “Anyone who wants reliable and accessible public transport is encouraged to attend,” she said. “We would also like people who have abandoned the service to come along.” Ms Williams said Public Transport Victoria statistics showed a 30 per cent decrease in patronage on the three loop stations, indicating serious problems with the current level of service. “People are demanding better public transport that is frequent, reliable and safe. Passengers are frequently dumped at Newport due to late running services or trains simply do not turn up.” She said the group want partial loop duplication in non-residential areas, increased train frequency and no changing trains at Newport or Laverton. “These improvements should not wait for another 20 years or more. We had direct trains to the city prior to May 2011 and this must be reversed.” Last year, Public Transport Victoria told Star that improvements would be possible when the Regional Rail Link opens in 2016 and Altona Loop trains ran through to Flinders Street station so passengers wouldn’t need to change trains at Newport. Ms Williams said timetabling and reliability had caused significant disadvantage to the community and many local residents had given up, driving to Newport or Laverton for a better service. “The unreliability and numerous train changes have seriously affected those with a disability and also shift workers.” “People should not be dumped at Newport because their train is late. The suspension of the service for two afternoons/evenings in January was harsh and unfair.” The meeting will be held on Thursday 20 March, at 7pm, at the RSL in Sargood St, Altona.

$1m damage as factory goes up in flames A FACTORY fire in Altona North that is believed to be not suspicious has caused more than $1 million damage. Emergency services were called to Dome Garden Supplies on Pinnacle Rd, near Grieve Parade, just before 8pm last Tuesday. It took more than 80 firefighters more than an hour to bring the blaze under control with the ferocious

blaze gutting the inside of the factory. Firefighters were still mopping up the scene on Wednesday before investigators arrived in the morning to establish how the fire started. According to local police, the fire is not suspicious. MFB assistant chief officer Ken Brown said when fire crews first arrived, they were met with explosions and fierce flames. “There was some explosions ini-

tially when firefighters first arrived,” he said. “The fire was very fierce and the smoke could be seen travelling over the West Gate Bridge.” The MFB issued a watch and act warning at 10.30pm on Tuesday for the suburbs of Yarraville, Kingsville, Spotswood, South Kingsville, West Footscray, Newport, Tottenham, Brooklyn, Altona North, Braybrook and Sunshine West. Fire crews worked hard to pre-

vent the flames spreading to adjoining properties. Director of Unique Bodyworx on Pinnacle Rd, Clen Kipp, arrived at work to a “chaotic scene” the next morning. “I arrived the next morning to chaos, there was road blockages, there was just so much going on,” he said. Anyone with information is asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

City builds local profile HOBSONS Bay City Council has completed the Altona Meadows Neighbourhood Profile and will start to promote and encourage its use when planning and advocating for the neighbourhood. The Altona Meadows Neighbourhood Profile is the sixth in the suite of profiles on each of the city’s neighbourhoods. It joins the already completed Laverton, Williamstown, Altona North-Brooklyn, Spotswood-South Kingsville and Newport West

Neighbourhood Profiles. Neighbourhood profiles bring together local area information to assist the council to plan and advocate for a neighbourhood and its community. The profile will enable the council to document neighbourhood change over time. It is also a useful resource for the general public, in particular businesses and community organisations.

Meeting in the works REHABILITATION works at the Jack Madigan Reserve in Newport should start in April. Hobsons Bay City Council is inviting residents to drop in to Newport Library on Thursday, 6 March between 4.30pm and 6.30pm and speak to the project team about the works. Residents will have an oppor-

tunity to obtain more information about the scope of works, find out about potential impact on the nearby residents, and speak to members of the council’s recreation and community facilities team about the future use of the reserve. For information about the dropin session please contact the council on 9932 1000.

Transport plan links HOBSONS Bay City Council has endorsed the development of an Integrated Transport Plan (ITP) to reflect recent regulatory and policy changes. According to the council, the ITP will provide an overarching framework for the provision of transport in the region. It will build on the city’s 2006 plan and provide a link to the plans

of neighbouring municipalities to ensure a consistent approach for communities. Through community and stakeholder consultation undertaken for the Community Health and Wellbeing Plan 2013-17 and the Council Plan 2013-17, access to transport was identified as a key issue facing the Hobsons Bay population.

Helpers hope park is set to boom By NICOLE VALICEK THE FULL potential of the Truganina Explosives Reserve in Altona is almost ready to be enjoyed by visitors-but it still needs a lot of work. Surrounded by the high metal fence opposite the Kooringal Golf Club in Queen Street, Altona, the 16 hectares of land have been dormant for many years undisturbed by the development surrounding it. “The Explosives Reserve is one of Melbourne’s last unique and beautiful coastal

spaces of archaeological, geological, geomorphological, fauna, floral and cultural significance with direct frontage to Port Phillip Bay,” Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society (TERPS) president Jack Hallowell said. Local residents formed the TERPS and with the assistance of the Hobsons Bay City Council worked to protect the site, and maintain it as a significant piece of open park land. In June 2000 the State Government appointed the

City of Hobsons Bay as the committee of management to administer the former explosives reserve for use as a recreational park. “Many thanks are due to the local residents who undertook this fight, and helped to achieve this result.” Mr Hallowell said a detailed master plan for the Explosives Reserve has now been agreed to by the State Department of Environment and Primary Industry. “Council and the TERPS now have a clear direction forward.”

Mr Hallowell said the group are eager to get back to work on the reserve and are looking for volunteers to help beautify the land, plant trees and install plant signage and pavers. “We’re pleased as punch the master plan went though ... we’re looking forward to getting back and doing some work.” The group’s first workday will coincide with the park’s open day on 2 March. counts of possessing a drug of dependence. Cuong Hoang, a 28-year old man from St Albans was also charged with four counts of trafficking a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence and four counts of possessing a drug of dependence. Michael Barbaro, a 54-yearold man from Sydenham was charged with two counts of trafficking a drug of dependence, two counts of possessing a drug of dependence and possessing a firearm. The men faced an out of sessions court hearing last week and were remanded to appear

at the Melbourne Magistrates Court. The men were arrested in Taylors Lakes following a three-month investigation into drug and weapon trafficking. Detective Inspector Ian Campbell said more than 700 grams of amphetamines and a large, military grade gun had been seized. “If you’re actively involved large-scale commercial drug trafficking and firearms trafficking, then Victoria Police will take a very strong stance against you,” Det Insp Campbell said.

Stitches maintain a community fabric By NICOLE VALICEK A GRASSROOTS project that has grown into a real community feat has all of those involved in stitches. The Joan Kirner House of the Williamstown Community and Education Centre is currently undertaking a yarn installation project. The project called “Growing Together” is led by conversation tutor at the Centre, Claire Hynes. Ms Hynes said the installation would incorporate a patchwork of colour using recycled and forgotten yarns brought together to create a cocoon for the 120-year-old elm tree located in the grounds of the centre. Ms Hynes said the idea came from a student in her class and was focused on community involvement. “The installation is a combination of the co-operation and friendship of our students, centre users and staff who have combined their diverse talents from varied backgrounds and cultural influences to create this work.” The project will be part of the celebrations proposed for the centre’s 40th anniversary this year. “It’s about reaching out into the community, getting people encouraged and excited about joining in, in crafts.” “It’s such a rarity now, if you don’t know someone working in craft, don’t have any contact within community, it’s such a

Salvos pass the baton By NICOLE VALICEK LAST Monday a baton arrived at the Williamstown Salvation Army store marking an important day for staff and volunteers. The start of February was the launch of a relay between retail stores and support offices across the Australian Southern Territory in order to raise money for Salvation Army projects nominated by staff members. The baton was passed around Tasmania and landed at the Williamstown Salvos Stores last Monday. Each store is aiming to raise as much funds as possible for five projects before passing on the torch to the next store.

Williamstown Salvos store manager Brooke Andrews said the fundraiser is a good opportunity to support important projects on top of the day to day work they do in stores. “It’s a good opportunity for us as colleagues and staff and our Salvos Store families to come together and help our own on top of what we do for community,” she said. Salvos Stores marketing co-ordinator Aife O’Loughlin said staff and volunteers go above and beyond to raise funds for staff nominated Salvation Army projects every year. “This year we have already seen some fantastic fundraising ideas and this is sure to continue as the torch passes between teams,” she said. The team building project will

see Salvos Stores raise $150,000 through their staff and volunteers for five staff-nominated Salvation Army programs across Australia. In Victoria the money raised will be used to establish Men’s Shed projects in Mildura to help develop the economy within the local community. In South Australia the Salvos will work with the Adelaide ministry to provide a truck to help remote communities. In total the fund-raising baton will be passed to 211 stores and seven support teams. The baton moved from Williamstown to Footscray on Tuesday and is making its way to stores across Melbourne.

Art flies high THE latest Airtime project for Hobsons Bay is now flying high at Altona Meadows Skate Park. Mayor of Hobsons Bay Sandra Wilson said the Airtime flags were a unique way to show off the talents of local young artists. “This is the eighth Airtime exhibition and it is a program we are committed to as it’s all about creative opportunities for young people,” she said. Cr Wilson said Airtime was all about giving young artists the chance to show off their work. The project, managed by Hobsons Bay City Council, draws on artworks created by young people using various media. The artworks are then reproduced and placed on flagpoles at the Queen Street Skate Park.

School’s result was first class By NICOLE VALICEK ST Mary’s Primary School in Altona has traded a bunch of coupons for some well-deserved class resources. The school participated in the 2013 Woolworths Earn and Learn Program. The program enabled schools to earn additional educational equipment by rewarding members of the school community who shop at Woolworths with coupons. Last week, the school exchanged their coupons for class resources including maths equipment and spelling aids,

with Safeway store manager Greg Giarrusso delivering the well-deserved products. St Mary’s principal Jim Sheedy said it was a great way for the school community to fundraise without imposing on families financially. “We looked at it and thought it was a good source for us that the community could access easily without asking people to put their hands in their pockets.” Schools get to choose how they redeem their Woolworths Earn and Learn Points from an extensive product catalogue covering all aspects of the curriculum.

“We got mainly maths and hands on equipment for the kids which really supplemented our resources fantastically well.” Madeleine Grace from the school said students will benefit from the extra resources. “These are very useful for teachers in the classroom and makes learning interesting and fun for the students,” she said. More than 40,000 pieces of equipment was given to schools in 2013 with 13,145 school groups involved in the program that benefited 2.7 million students across Australia.

This year the council’s Clean Up Australia Day will be held on 2 March and are calling on volunteers to make it bigger

and better. The local clean-up will be held at McCormack Park in Laverton between 10am and noon. A free community barbecue will be held after the event to reward all involved and celebrate the clean-up efforts. Hobsons Bay City Council mayor Sandra Wilson said Clean Up Australia Day was the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and help clean up local parks and waterways. “Clean Up Australia Day

2014 is your chance to put yourself in the picture and join hundreds of thousands of volunteers who will take their white and yellow bags and don their gloves to clean up their local community.” Cr Wilson said the day was also a good opportunity to think about how we can reduce our impact on the environment. Registrations are now open to join the team in 2014. To register a Clean Up site visit www.cleanupaustraliaday. org.au or call 1800 282 329.

Military workhorse, the C-130 Hercules, will be at Point Cook. 115318

Military history is up in the air By XAVIER SMERDON UP TO 50,000 people are expected to flock to Point Cook this weekend to help celebrate the suburb’s place in Australia’s military history. This Saturday will mark exactly 100 years since Lieutenant Eric Harrison flew a Bristol Box Kite aircraft at the Point Cook airfield and entered himself into the history books. It was the first flight of an Australian military aircraft and signified the beginning of what would become 100 years of military aviation in the country. Air Commodore Phil Byrne,

the head of special events at the Royal Australian Air Force, told Star the number of tickets to the event had been limited and 50,000 people were likely to make the journey to the Point Cook airbase. “This marks an extremely important occasion in Australia’s military history,” Air Comm Byrne said. “This is not the biggest event we’ve ever organised but it is certainly the most significant.” Air Comm Byrne said the event would show the history, evolution and future of the Australian air force, with everything from a Bristol Box Kite to

unmanned drones. Air Comm Byrne said Point Cook would forever be considered home of military aviation in Australia. Everyone who buys a ticket to the two-day event will also receive free public transport within Melbourne and Air Comm Byrne encouraged people attending to avoid bringing their car. The Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show will be held 1 to 2 March 2014 at RAAF Williams, Point Cook. For more information visit www.airforce.gov.au

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster will be at Point Cook this weekend. 115318

The venerable F-18 Hornet will also be on display. 115318

The cast of Better Homes and Gardens will be filming their TV show in Wyndham soon. 115332

Hoppers on TV HOPPERS Crossing has been chosen as the setting for a TV show that helps make life in the suburbs even better. Lifestyle program Better Homes and Gardens will spend three days filming an entire episode in Wyndham later this month. From 28 February to 2 March the entire cast of the show, including Johanna Griggs, Dr Harry Cooper, Rob Palmer, “Fast Ed” Halmagyi, Tara Dennis and Jason Hodges, will meet with residents while filming. Tara and Jason will make over a kitchen, bedroom and courtyard to be constructed in the Hoppers Crossing Bunnings store.

Graham will demonstrate inventive new ways to grow vegetables and present the most sought after plants of this year. Dr Harry will display increasingly popular peculiar pets and take a trip out to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The show’s host, Johanna Griggs, said she was looking forward to filming in Wyndham. “The whole team is ridiculously excited about meeting the Hoppers Crossing locals and to get an opportunity for us to thank them for watching and supporting our show,” Johanna said. “We hope we get to meet as many of them as we can, and that they get to see how the show is made, meet their favou-

rite presenters and enjoy a great day out. There will be lots going on.” Crowd favourite Dr Harry said he was excited to return to Werribee Zoo. “I love the segments where we get to meet the fans. I’ll be showcasing the increasingly popular peculiar pets and heading out to Werribee Zoo. It’s a Zoo like no other and I can’t wait explore it again,” Dr Harry said. Residents are encouraged to attend with their families to meet the team and see all the action at Bunnings Warehouse Hoppers Crossing, 221-231 Old Geelong Road. The Bunnings Warehouse Hoppers Crossing episode will air on Friday 11 April.

discipline, respect, and leadership. Most importantly though, I wanted to thank Australia as a nation, and I thought I could do this best by serving my new country in the RAAF.” Deng found that his air force training brought many personal benefits. “Training was excellent, very well conducted throughout by experienced and wellqualified trainers. I gained confidence, discipline, and knowledge. I believe the training brought out the best in me.” On Saturday 21 May 2012, Deng Alier received an award for the ‘Most Outstanding Airman’ from the Hellenic sub branch of the RSL. The night commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, in which Australian forces played a significant role. The singular honour bestowed upon Aircraftman Alier would be a huge accomplishment for anyone, but in his case it is the culmination of a remarkable story. Receiving the award has been a peak experience of his air force career to date.

“I’m so honoured to have received this award which is one of the most historic in Australian Greek relations, and Australia as a nation. I’m so thankful to my unit, Number 21 Squadron for giving me this great opportunity in life,” he says. Number 21 (City of Melbourne) Squadron is based at Point Cook and has a number of permanent and reserve members in its team. Deng looks forward to the future experiences his air force career will bring, and he is proud to be part of the air force team. “I will say that the most important thing, that I have found to be the highlight for me, is that the RAAF accepts you for who you are, not what you have, or where you came from. The spectacular Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show at RAAF Williams will be at Point Cook on the first and second of March 2014. More information about the Air Show is at www.airforce.gov.au/airshows.

THE Royal Australian Air Force has many Victorian locals among its ranks. One of these Victorian locals is Aircraftman Deng Alier. Deng has an amazing story, having first arrived in Australian in 2003 as a refugee from Kenya. “I lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for 10 years and my original dream was to go to America. It was my mother who filled out an Australian refugee humanitarian visa and, after two years of waiting, we were accepted to come to this amazing country. We arrived in Australia on 26 September 2003, and I have been proud to live in this country ever since. My story just shows that whatever plans or dreams we do have, God sometimes has a better way or plan for us.” Deng decided to apply to join the Royal Australian Air Force for many reasons. “Most of my childhood was spent around men in uniform, my father being one of them. I was strongly influenced by the qualities they displayed, such as

Museum flexes military muscle THE RAAF Museum, located at Point Cook, is home to an astonishing range of historic military aircraft. Point Cook residents will know the secret of the interactive flying displays which occur most weeks on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. These displays feature historic aircraft in flight and give spectators the chance to ask the pilot questions on the day. It’s difficult to imagine how much closer you can get to actually flying some of these rare birds. The museum affords visitors a vivid, hands-on experience of the history of the Royal Australian

Air Force and has an enormous collection. There is historical material on show and several hangars of static aircraft. Visitors can also view the restoration hangar where they can currently see the progress of a restoration of an iconic Mosquito, a twin engine multi purpose aircraft from World War II. The museum’s lifeblood is its volunteers who work tirelessly in a variety of different areas, from restoration, to providing guided tours. They are a font of information, and a direct connection with the air force’s rich history, so make time to have a chat when you drop in.

Another big highlight is the museum shop where you can buy clothing, books, models and patches. Aviation fans find it difficult to resist. The RAAF Museum is one way you can im-

merse yourself in Western Melbourne’s rich military aviation history, and the flying displays are not only free, but a chance to see rare historic aircraft in action and talk to the pilot.

Boxkite’s rare turn-out With only a couple of original Boxkites left in the world, a team of dedicated volunteers at the RAAF Museum in Victoria held a vision to build a working replica. It took them seven long years to lovingly build the aircraft from the ground up. Hand-built, and made of wood and wire, the Boxkite replica is a reminder of the romance of the early days of aviation when aircraft were very different to the complex machines of today. The Boxkite replica has recently successfully completed a program of

flight testing when the aircraft was flown by Air Vice-Marshal Mark Skidmore (retired), a former test pilot with the RAAF’s Aircraft Research and Development Unit at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia. Air Vice-Marshal Skidmore said the aircraft flew about one thousand metres and reached a top speed of about 42 miles an hour. “It was an exhilarating and humbling experience, I am honoured and proud to follow those aviators who pioneered military aviation in this country,” he said.

Displays in air and on ground WERRIBEE Star readers will experience many more aircraft in the skies than usual from Friday 28 February to Sunday 2 March 2014. But there’s no need to panic, it will all be to celebrate a very special birthday. On the Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March, the Royal Australian Air Force will be hosting the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show at RAAF Williams - Point Cook. This air show is a national event encompassing spectacular air and ground displays of historic and contemporary military aircraft, ranging from the Bristol Boxkite to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. The air show has something for everyone including ground displays from the Air Force Balloon, Air Force Band, Mili-

tary Working Dogs (including the ever popular puppy nursery) as well as flying displays of military aircraft from across the years. Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Davies, recently said the air force was proud to host the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show. “The air show is an opportunity to demonstrate the professionalism and aviation capabilities of today’s defence force.” he said. “We have chosen the theme of Tradition, Innovation and Evolution for the event to reinforce the extraordinary journey of military aviation from hand built aircraft like the Boxkite to the complex and powerful military aircraft of today. Point Cook is the birth place

of military aviation in Australia and the oldest continually operating military airfield in the world. It was selected by English aviator Lieutenant Henry Petre in 1913 who inspected possible sites for a flying school for the Australian Government on his motorcycle. Petre selected Point Cook, based on its flat landscape and altitude, which were all suitable for early aviation. Point Cook has been an air force base ever since and, today, is part of RAAF Williams which consists of both Laverton and Point Cook bases. The air show will be open from 8am to 4pm with flying displays to be held from 10am to 3.30pm. The flying program is the same for both days, so people can get the full experience on either day of the event.

One of the stunning Bristol Boxkites that will be at the centenary celebrations.

THE Bristol Boxkite is an amazing example of early aircraft. It was first developed in Britain in 1910 by the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company and was ‘state of the art’ at the time. A Bristol Boxkite was flown in Australia for the first time on the morning of 1 March 1914, when Lieutenant Eric Harrison, an aviation instructor with the Central Flying School, took one into the air at Point Cook. In 1915, the first Bristol Boxkite to be built in Australia flew its maiden flight.

Bats in firing line shorts

Gulls make it look easy

By ADEM SARICAOGLU SPOTSWOOD’S season will be on the line this weekend against Laverton in Turf Cricket’s North Division. The Woodsmen sit less than three points outside the top four, coming into the final day of the home-andaway season and will be desperately hoping their batting line-up comes to the party against the Magpies at Laverton Park. Spotswood sent Laverton in to bat in the cool conditions on day one on Saturday, and with the help of Ashley Robertson’s very handy figures of 5/23 off 15 overs, the visitors did manage to bowl the Magpies out. However, the job took 77 overs to complete and by the end of the innings, Laverton was able to post a formidable total of 250. Robertson’s five-wicket haul was the obvious standout among Spotswood’s bowling figures, but Andrew Butler (2/55), Abhijeet Sharma (1/11), captain-coach Andrew Dickinson (1/33) and Ed Young (1/75) all claimed wickets of their own. Late in the day, Woodsmen openers Sharma and David Buysen were handed the awkward task of navigating three overs out in the middle, but the pair held firm to walk off the ground unbeaten at stumps. The pair managed to score just a single run, but will have all of 77 overs to help Spotswood tick off the remaining 250 runs required for victory this weekend. However, even if the Woodsmen manage to claim victory this coming Saturday, the odds for Spotswood making the final four will still be

WILLIAMSTOWN is in the box seat following day one of its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association match against Sunshine. After being sent in to bat by the Crows, Williamstown made 5/232 before declaring. Grant Sandars and Brenton Hodges were the pick of the batsmen with both blasting impressive knocks of 61 and 64 respectively. They were well supported by the top order in what was a consistent performance across the board. Of the seven Seagulls to bat, all made it to double figures. Williamstown captain Craig Sheedy’s decision to declare paid almost immediate dividends with Sunshine losing two wickets before the close of play. The Crows finished the day at 2/20 after 15 overs and will need another 212 runs to secure victory when the match resumes this week. Elsewhere in the VSDCA, top of the table Werribee will need to make 274 against Oakleigh this week if the Tigers are to keep their unbeaten streak going. Melton is on the brink of back-to-back wins after making a strong score of 236 against Noble Park. After being bowled out for 70 in its first innings, Yarraville has already been defeated by Croydon. Altona also batted first on Saturday and made 180 against Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows.

Laverton’s Mark Logan fends off some short stuff from the Spotswood attack on Saturday. 115344 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT counting against them, as the fourthplaced Doutta Stars look to be in control of their clash against West Coburg. With eight wickets still in hand, the Stars only need another 57 runs for victory, and have 58 overs to get them.

The result this weekend is simply academic for Laverton, who cannot make the finals nor be relegated from the North Division - currently perched in eighth spot on the ladder. Both Williamstown CYMS and Altona North are also playing for nothing but pride in their two-day clash set to resume at the CYs’

Fearon Reserve on Saturday. Choosing to bat first, Altona North was bowled out for 191 before the CYs started their chase. Williamstown CYMS will pick up its pursuit of 192 on Saturday at 0/20, with openers Glen Hall (12 n.o.) and Billy Millar (6 n.o.) at the crease.

Dogs in the box seat By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater remains in second spot on the Victorian Premier Cricket ladder after a 52-run win against the Camberwell Magpies on Saturday. The Bulldogs posted 9/261 in their first innings on the back of a brilliant 95 from Travis Dean. In reply, Camberwell made a strong start to the run chase with Thomas Rickarby digging in at the top of the order. The Magpies looked in control with the score at 1/48 until a Footscray triple strike changed the momentum of the match. Lucas Dredge, Mitchell WinterIrving and Hamish Winter-Irving combined for three quick wickets to have the Magpies in trouble at 4/67. The Camberwell middle order batsmen refused to give up though and set about getting the run chase back on track. Justin Lampard (38), Amrith Eldridge (57) and Jack McNamara (36) kept the scoreboard ticking over. However, with no-one able to go

on and make a big score, the pressure began to mount. With the score at 6/207, the Footscray bowlers produced another passage of brilliance, taking the last four wickets for just two runs to seal the impressive victory. As well as his early strike, Dredge remained a constant headache throughout the Camberwell innings as he stormed to his best bowling performance of the season. Dredge finished with figures of 5/31 to easily be the pick of the bowlers. He was well supported by Hamish Winter-Irving who took 2/40. The result takes Footscray to an equal competition best 14-3 win/ loss record for the season. The Bulldogs are just two points behind top of the table St Kilda and have a nine-point buffer over thirdplaced Geelong. In other Victorian Premier Cricket results, Geelong got the better of Hawthorn Monash University, Ringwood defeated Melbourne, Essendon beat Prahran and Dandenong were too good for Northcote.

WEST Newport is on track to claim a spot in the final four in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf competition after performing well with both bat and ball away to Gellibrand on Saturday. Gellibrand was sent in to bat and could only last 54.5 overs out in the middle at Digman Reserve, losing its 10th and final wicket for a total of just 141. West Newport faced 22 overs late in the day’s play and despite losing a wicket in that time, is already halfway through its chase. This weekend the visitor will resume at 1/78. Meanwhile in another crucial A Turf game taking place in the WDCA this weekend, St John’s looks to be in the box seat and will likely avoid the wooden spoon after gaining the upper hand over fellow cellar dweller, Williamstown Congs. After posting a declared 9/182 on Saturday, St John’s has Williamstown Congs stuck on 2/16 going into day two. WITH the third race of the Footscray Cycling Club’s four-race FORM700 Series being washed out, the whole series came down to Sunday’s finale held at Altona’s Drake Boulevard in pictureperfect weather. With serious prize money on offer and so many riders still in the hunt, racing was both hotly contested, aggressive and ‘marked’, with riders willing to chase down any attempted breaks. Total Rush rider Dom Dudkiewicz took three from three races in a hat-trick that saw him score the maximum points available in A Grade’s race and continue a run of astounding form. The attacks started from the get-go, with Miles DaCosta taking the initiative until he clipped a pedal into a corner, went down and scraped some skin. Even though he had an unassailable lead, series winner Dudkiewicz knew that it would be a complex race because the minor placings were up for grabs. “A Grade’s race was very aggressive but also very defensive; there were a lot of guys who were in a position to finish well in the series, so it was on,” he said. “There were attacks and counter attacks, but for the most part there were so many guys willing to chase things down that it had to be a bunch sprint. With two laps to go Paul Redenbach went but there were guys who were willing to do a big turn on the front. I came around the last corner maybe fourth or fifth wheel, put the hammer down and hit 70 kays and got to the line first.” Dudkiewicz finished ahead of the very consistent Ross Mueller in second and Graham Carlson in third.

They’re brothers in arms By LIAM TWOMEY THEY came, they saw and they conquered. For Western Suburbs brothers Craig and Steve Trembath, the recent International Shooting Sport Federation Championship in Perth was one for the record books. Steve, from Seabrook, took out the trap final while Craig, from Sanctuary Lakes, claimed the double trap final. According to the Australian Clay Target Association records, the pair are the first brothers in the history of the sport to win Commonwealth and National Titles at the same event. “It was a great result,” Craig said. “We have put a lot into the sport over the last 10 plus years and to actually have a situation where two brothers take out the national titles in both the flagship events it is just a really good thing to share. Steve was also rapt to enjoy the spotlight with his brother. “I think it made it all the more special that my brother had won as well,” Steve said. “We couldn’t have got the timing better. It was great that he did it and won his event and then for me to go and win my one was just huge.” The National Championships saw the best shooters in Australia descend on Perth in the hope of walking away with top honours. On his way to the gold in the trap event, Steve edged out Olympians Adam Vella and Michael Diamond while in the double trap,

Craig also defeated Olympians Tom Turner and Russell Mark. Craig is hoping his run of good form continues all the way to the Commonwealth Games. In the coming weeks he will compete in two events in Australia as well as a tournament in Kuwait to try and book his spot to Glasgow. “At the end of those three events, we will know who is going to the Commonwealth Games in double trap,” Craig said. “It looks like Russell Mark is going to take one of the two spots, and it is probably between myself and Tom Turner for the second spot. I just need to have a good couple of weeks in those events that are coming up and it is in my hands to be able to take that position.” It will also be a busy few months for Steve, who has been selected for the Victorian state team. The pair paid credit to the tough training they get at the Werribee International Shooting Complex as well as the support of their families in getting to the top. “Without the support of our families we couldn’t do it that’s for sure,” Craig said. “Our base is at Werribee and it is renowned for being a tough place to train. It puts us in very good stead and that club and that facility continues to produce very good athletes. “To have those facilities on your doorstep fast tracks you to be able to get better and it certainly helped put the results on the board for us.”

Muirhead’s sizzling summer continues By LIAM TWOMEY IT HAS been an amazing summer for Altona resident James Muirhead. The 20-year-old has gone from rising star to world-beater after bamboozling some of the cricket world’s best batsmen. Following a strong Big Bash League campaign with the Melbourne Stars, the leg spin bowler was selected in the Australian Twenty20 squad for its three match series against England. Being his country’s front line spinner and bowling in front of packed out crowds may have been too much for some but Muirhead thrived on the big stage. From his three international T20 games he took 1/34, 1/17 and 2/13 as Australia stormed to a series whitewash. On the back of his stunning suc-

star cess, Muirhead was selected in the Australian T20 Squad for the upcoming World Cup in Bangladesh. Before the tournament he will also represent Australia in South Africa. Not surprisingly, Cricket Victoria wasted no time getting on the front foot and signed Muirhead to a contract with the Bushrangers for the next four seasons. “I feel like Victoria is the best envi-

ronment for me to develop my cricket,” Muirhead said earlier this month. “I was born in Melbourne, I live in Melbourne and now I can just focus on playing my cricket in Melbourne. “We’ve got a great set up, with the best coaches ... so I’m very happy.” Bushrangers coach Greg Shipperd said he was pleased to have secured Muirhead on a long-term deal. “We seem to be a bit of a factory of spinners at the moment,” Shipperd said. “So to have secured one of Australia’s most promising leg-spinners - someone who has already shown in the heat of international competition that he’s got the nerve and an exciting skillset - to have him commit to Victoria is a really positive move for our squad. “He’s still got some work to do

with his batting and bowling and understanding the game from a spin bowling point of view, but that comes with experience, and he’s got at least four years of it (to come) so we’re thrilled with that.” For his outstanding sporting achievements Muirhead has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Muirhead will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

WILLIAMSTOWN’S host of young athletes proved they could match it with the best in the state after brilliant efforts in the Victorian Junior Athletics Championships earlier this month. In a dominating performance, Williamstown collected a total of six gold medals, six silver medals and two bronze medals in the meet at Albert Park. Young gun Grace Goldsworthy was ultra impressive in her sprint events at the championships. Goldsworthy, who competes in the under-14 age group, started quickly and took a commanding lead in the 400m, finishing strongly in the time of 60.2 seconds. The next day she stepped onto the track for the 200m and again showed poise and speed to take out the event in the time of 26.74 seconds. Daniela Roman kept her composure under pressure, winning the under-20 100m (11.92 sec) and the 100m hurdles (14.78 sec). In the under-16 age group Celeste Mucci had a challenging final day of competition. She placed second for a silver medal in the high jump (1.69m) on a countback. Mucci then won the gold medal in the long jump (5.33m) also on a countback. Ryhan Thomas had an excellent championships winning the under-16 2000m steeplechase. Coming from behind over the last two laps, Thomas cleared the final barriers to run away from the opposition in the final straight. He also kept himself busy over the three days of the championships winning silver medals in the 1500m (4.17.12 sec) and the 3000m (9m 36.53 sec). Both runs saw the rising star produce personal best performances. Cosimo Mucci ran strongly to claim the silver medal in the under-17 100m (11.30 sec). Sweeney Preston set a fast early pace in his under-17 400m and then had to work hard down the home straight to take out the silver medal. In the under-18 100m Brad Ticehurst drew the outside lane and raced down the track for the bronze medal in a time of 11.13 seconds. In a close contest Sean Hardeman had to settle for fourth place in the under-20 javelin event.

will face either Werribee or Springvale in the grand final where the eventual champion will be guaranteed promotion into Division One.

CITY WEST Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the Victorian Netball League ladder following a crushing win over Fed Uni Ballarat 61-26 on Wednesday night. Despite the eventual lopsided score-line, it was tough going for the Falcons in the first quarter as they were forced to fight hard against a fired up Pride outfit. However, after taking a 14-10 lead into the opening break Marg Lind’s team was able to assert its dominance. The Falcons scored another 14 goals in the second term while restricting Fed Uni to just four. The 28-14 deficit was never going to be overturned as City West maintained its dominance in the second half. City West scored another 31 goals and restricted the Pride to just 12 to seal the percentage-boosting win. Shooting combination Julia Knott and Alice Teague-Neeld were outstanding around goals with both

scoring at over 85 per cent efficiency. Teague-Neeld finished with 35 goals from 38 attempts while Knott scored 26 goals from her 30 shots taken. Elsewhere in the VNL, the news was also good for VU Western Lightning, which was able to secure its first win of the season. The Lightning proved too strong for Southern Stars in a low scoring match, 34-31. After suffering a smashing in week one, VU was out to make amends against the Saints and opened up a six-goal lead at half time. Despite being outscored in the final two quarters, the gap was enough to hang on for a three goal win. The Lightning now has a 1-1 win/loss record for the season and is in eighth spot on the VNL Championship ladder. When round three gets underway this week, they will take on the sixth placed Monash University Storm while the Falcons will meet fourth placed DC North Blaze.

WILLIAMSTOWN has cemented itself as the team to beat ahead of the Division Two Summer League Baseball post-season, which kicks off this week. The Wolves ended the regular season on Saturday on top of the table with just four losses to their name after easily accounting for Moorabbin - their opponent in the semis this week - 11-1 on the road. Coach Dean Marnell was obviously pleased with such a formidable result against a fellow finalist, but did admit after the game Moorabbin had its foot off the gas pedal. “We were really positive from the start,” Marnell said. “We thought it would be a good hit-out before the finals, but unfortunately the opposition didn’t really come to play. “They were holding back saving everything for Wednesday night (game one of the semi final series), but we looked at it and thought we’d keep the momentum going into the finals. “So in that regard it was really good.” Marnell chose to give most of his bullpen a look-in on Saturday, with David Asp, Jason Lester, Nathan Rogers and Josh Lee all spending time on the mound. With three defensive double plays made in the infield and Williamstown’s base-runners getting the job done throughout the day, Marnell said he was pleased with all facets of the game and was confident his Wolves will be able to replicate that form this week. “The key is that first game and the boys are feeling confident and we’re ready to rock and roll on Wednesday,” Marnell said. “We’ll face Andrew Dewar, and he’s a good pitcher for Moorabbin. He’s been one of the best pitchers in the league this year and he’ll be tough, but we’ve got the team, I reckon. “We hit deep into our line-

THE Western Warriors are launching the next generation of stars on the greens. The lawn bowls squad, which is for junior bowlers in the west-metro region, has built a rich history on developing young talent since it was launched in 2006. After nearly a decade of success, coach Terry Norris is aiming to expand the squad even more in the coming years. “Basically the idea is to get kids outside and give them something to play,” Norris said. “Our aims are to get the juniors to understand and play the game to the best of their ability and to foster companionship and camaraderie. “We also teach kids how to be respectful to their team-mates, their coaches, the opposition and anyone connected with bowls.” Squad members range from 10 to 18 years of age and are given the opportunity to compete in a range of tournaments and events throughout the state. Norris said the Warriors have also helped a growing number of promising juniors reach the next level of competition. “From our junior squad, we have a pathway to the bowls Victoria under-18 junior development squad of which we pick kids to represent Victoria,” he said. “I’m pleased to say in that timeframe we have had 12 kids that have gone on to represent the state both in

With a number of teams struggling to maintain strong playing numbers, Norris said the next generation was the key to long-term success for everyone in the sport. “Besides wanting to actively give kids something to do, we also see that these kids are the future of lawn bowls,” he said. “We find it very hard to get peo-
