Taste of the world GET the chopsticks ready - the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is coming to the City of Maribyrnong this week. From Friday until 16 March, Maribyrnong City Council is offering nine unique events as part of its Eat Drink Westside program, including an Ethiopian dinner with traditional dance performances, an afternoon salon with French cuisine and a race around Footscray to find the ingredients for a Vietnamese, African and Indian soup. One of the more popular events is a dumpling making workshop and Xinjiangstyle banquet at Footscray’s 1+1 Mandarin Dumpling Restaurant. Footscray Food Blogger Lauren Wambach, Amy Zhang and Mayor Grant Miles got an early start on taste testing last week. Go to www.festivalcity.com.au to check out all the events happening across the municipality. 115144 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI

Big MAC plan By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE Maribyrnong Aquatics Centre is getting bigger. Maribyrnong City Council has put out tenders for a $1 million expansion of the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre to cater for growing demand. Plans include a 300 square metre expansion to the north of the building, boosting the size of the current gymnasium from 400 square metres to 680 square metres, and increasing the group

exercise room to 300 square metres. The council has budgeted for the expansion this financial year, with construction set to begin in December this year and works expected to be complete in the first half of 2015. The council will also purchase new gym equipment for the expanded space. Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles told Star the expansion would cater for the ever-growing numbers coming through MAC’s doors.

“The expansion of the MAC health and fitness area will allow for an increased cardio equipment range and the introduction of new specialist fitness equipment,” Cr Miles said. “The project will improve accessibility and program opportunities for young people, people with a disability and the general community seeking to improve their health and well-being. “The fitness equipment at MAC is renewed every three years or as required. The project is still at an early

stage, however construction will be planned to minimise the impact on MAC members and health and wellness programs. “Maribyrnong City Council has a strong commitment to investing in community infrastructure through improving the quality and accessibility of its facilities. “The Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre is now in its eighth year of operation and has been an outstanding asset to the community with over one million

visits per year,” Cr Miles said. The council opened MAC in 2006 after voting to sell the Footscray Pool the year before. The $17 million Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre was jointly funded through a partnership with the council, the State Government and Highpoint Shopping Centre. The council spent $450,000 over the 2011/12 financial year on additional changeroom facilities, plus $80,000 on plant and equipment renewal.

STAFF and patients at Footscray’s Western Private Hospital will walk and run a virtual relay around Australia to raise money for heart disease research. Western Private is hoping to raise around $500 as part of its RedFeb attempt by getting their

doctors, nurses and patients to jump on a treadmill at the hospital and rack up the kilometres. RedFeb is the annual major fund-raiser for Heart Research Australia. Around two out of three Australian families are affected by heart disease, with inadequate physical activity a major risk factor.

YARRAVILLE’S pop-up park is set to become permanent. Maribyrnong City Council will vote on implementing a year-round park in Ballarat St at a City Development Special Committee meeting tomorrow night. A council report proposes closing Ballarat St between Murray and Canterbury streets and replacing the road surface with synthetic turf. Umbrellas would be installed to provide shade in the summer months, and would require day-to-day support from traders. “The community support for a pop-up park has been enormous,” Mayor Grant Miles said. “The pop-up park has been a resounding success over the past few years and I’m pleased to say it will become a permanent feature of Yarraville. “We’ve run extensive community consultation with the Yarraville community and traders over the past few years, and it all points to the same thing - the community wants a permanent park. “I’m looking forward to enjoying the first year of the permanent park this summer.” The council will need to go through a formal road closure by undertaking a public process inviting comment on the proposal before beginning work on the park. The project will cost approximately $250,000 and is expected to be completed by December this year. The move comes three months after the council shot down a motion to reinstate the pop-up park over the summer. A committee of Yarraville businesses, led by Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith, resurrected the pop-up park and delivered a Summer Sun Days program that included live music, book readings, yoga and other family friendly activities.

MORE than 1000 Footscray families are being kept in limbo on the public housing waiting list - but the wait is improving, according to the State Government. The latest public housing waiting list figures for the December 2013 quarter reveal that 348 families are currently on the early housing list and 729 on the wait-turn list for the Footscray/ Flemington office. The early housing list is a register of families who are at risk of recurring homelessness, coping with a disability or who have special housing needs. A further 202 families are waiting to be transferred to another public housing premises that better suits their needs. Meanwhile, the state-wide waiting list recorded an overall reduction of 492 to 33,916, compared with 34,408 in the September quarter. State Housing Minister Wendy Lovell said the state-wide public housing waiting list has now fallen for 10 of the 13 quarters since the Victorian Coalition Government was elected in November 2010. Ms Lovell said the main reason for the drop in public housing waiting lists was better management and a sheer dedication to improving the system. “Overall there are now 7296 fewer people waiting for housing than there were on the waiting list published by the former Labor Government in September 2010,” she said. “There is still work to be done to continue to get the waiting lists down, but by reviewing vacancy rates, turnover procedures and by working harder with those who have been waiting the longest, we are seeing results. “We are also making people more aware of the options that are available to them, with regard to community housing, bond loans for the private rental market, and other assistance.”

Forum considers trouble with trucks By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council will host a community forum about trucks this week in a bid to get some short and medium term solutions on the road. Council staff and representatives from the Department of Health, Environment Protection Authority and VicRoads will also attend. Mayor Grant Miles told Star that truck traffic in the inner West was one of the biggest and most difficult issues facing Maribyrnong City Council. “There will be CEOs from these organisations and people who can actually make decisions and answer

the tough questions,” councillor Miles said. “It’s part of our new and improved public consultation process as well - we want to get feedback from the community. “It’s a good opportunity to get ideas and have the people there on the spot that can answer the residents’ queries.” Since May last year the council has been pushing VicRoads to ban trucks from using Somerville Rd between 8am to 9.30am and 3pm to 4.30pm on school days. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Samantha McArthur said about 3000 trucks a day used Somerville Rd as a rat run to

the Port of Melbourne. The council and MTAG remain concerned that Somerville Rd is dotted with three schools and one child care centre. VicRoads has since agreed to investigate curfews during school crossing times, but action has yet to be taken. “We’re extremely frustrated at the inaction of VicRoads, and we’d like them to make a decision (on the truck curfews),” Cr Miles said. “We’re still waiting on an answer to our question whether we can put increased curfews on Somerville Rd. “We’d like that to happen as soon as possible.”

Cr Miles said VicRoads had recently carried out a large origin destination study that looked into what trucks are doing in the municipality. “(It’s looking into) whether the trucks are just passing through, or whether they are making deliveries or they’re stationed in the City of Maribyrnong. “It’s going to take about two months to collate that information but that will be extremely helpful to our cause once we’ve got the results to that survey.” The Trucks and the Inner West Forum will be held this Thursday from 5pm to 7.30pm at the Maribyrnong Town Hall.

Dr Michael Wong is in a serious but stable condition after being stabbed at Western Hospital last week. 115243 Police cordoned off the Gordon St entrance after the stabbing at Western Hospital last week. 115197 Picture: CHARLENE MACAULAY

Surgeon stab charge By CHARLENE MACAULAY A 48-YEAR-OLD North Sunshine man has been charged with attempted murder over a stabbing at Footscray’s Western Hospital last week. Kareem Al-Salami was formally charged at the Footscray police station and was taken to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a remand hearing, where he did not seek bail. The charge comes after the stabbing of 43-year-old neurosurgeon Dr Michael Wong, who walked into the Western Hospital foyer about 8.30am on Tuesday 18 February to

start his shift when he was stabbed multiple times over various parts of his body, causing life-threatening injuries. A number of people were in the foyer at the time of the attack and quickly came to the aid of Dr Wong, taking him away for life-saving surgery. Footscray police were called to the hospital just before 8.30am, where the offender immediately dropped the knife and surrendered. Inspector Tony Long said it was believed the offender may have

pointed the knife at other people, but no-one else was injured. Dr Wong is a full time neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Head of Neurosurgery at the Western Hospital. He also consults and operates at Epworth Eastern Hospital and John Fawkner Hospital. He treats patients with intracranial problems, spinal problems and peripheral nerves disorder and has a special interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery. Dr Wong remained in a serious

but stable condition as the time Star went to print. Insp Long praised the quick thinking and bravery of the hospital staff and members of the public that helped Dr Wong after the attack. Western Health directed patients and visitors to other hospital entrances last Tuesday as police cordoned off the Gordon St entrance and foyer as a crime scene. Western Health acting CEO Russell Harrison said these kinds of attacks against hospital staff were “significantly rare”.

Cashed up councillors MARIBYRNONG councillors have racked up a $17,000 expenses bill over the past quarter, claiming thousands of dollars in child care and mobile phone bills. The councillors’ quarterly expenses, which were tabled a last week’s council meeting, revealed that former mayor Catherine Cumming claimed $13,697 alone for child care and day care between October and December 2013. Cr Cumming, who is a single mother of five, also claimed $378 on mobile phone charges and $88 on taxi fares. Fellow councillors claimed more modest expenses on mobile phone charges, transport, events and memberships with Sarah Carter claiming $1150, Mayor Grant Miles $497, Nam Quach $455, Michael Clarke $300, Cameron McDonald $270 and Martin Zakharov $206. Under section 74A and 74B of the Local Government Act, councillors are paid an annual allowance of $22,405 each year and can also claim on any money spent while undertaking their duties as councillors. The mayor’s annual allowance is $69,325. Councillors are also provided with an iPad and mobile phone that each have 3G connectivity, and a multifunction device for scanning and printing for the duration of their term in office. In carrying out their civic duty, councillors are required to attend statutory committee and sector-based meetings as well as attend seminars, functions and other information meetings in order to be kept informed of issues facing the municipality, wards, and local government in general. Councillors’ expenses details are released quarterly. Residents can view a breakdown of expenses at www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au.

Jail appeal THE Supreme Court has quashed a man’s appeal to have his jail sentence reduced after he nearly stabbed a man to death in a robbery gone wrong. Avzi Ejupi told the Supreme Court on 4 February that his five-year jail sentence, with a nonparole period of three-and-a-half years, was manifestly excessive. Ejupi was convicted on two counts of attempted theft and one charge of recklessly causing serious injury after trying to break into two cars in Braybrook on the night of 30 April 2012. Neighbour Michael Jones and his father, cousin and friends confronted Ejupi and a scuffle broke out. Ejupi freed himself from the struggle and took off down the street, but Mr Jones caught up with the man to turn him over to police. The two struggled, during which Ejupi stabbed Mr Jones repeatedly with a steak knife in the body and head. Justice Phillip Priest dismissed the appeal, noting Ejupi’s long-term addiction to heroin and his extensive criminal history relating to drugs. – Charlene Macaulay

Young achiever’s clinical approach By CHARLENE MACAULAY A FOOTSCRAY resident is in the running for the Victorian Young Achiever Awards. Marliese Alexander, 27, has been nominated for the Science and Technology awards for her work at the Peter MaCallum Cancer Centre. Ms Alexander is a clinical pharmacist, who has already led clinical research and improvement projects at Peter MacCallum. “I’m in a really supportive environment here at Peter Mac and my nomination came from both my immediate boss and from one of our senior haematologists, who has been my mentor for the past couple of years,” she said. “It’s a good recognition that the people I work closely with

think that I’m worthy of the nomination. “It would be a really great achievement (if I won) and great satisfaction to know that the work that I’m doing is recognised by other people as being important.” Ms Alexander is currently focusing her research on thrombosis and thromboembolism prevention, and is studying blood clots in lung cancer patients as part of her PhD. “Across the hospital, I’m part of a few initiatives looking at surgical cancer patients, gastrointestinal cancer patients and lung cancer patients. These are our particularly high risk patient population. “Clotting is the biggest problem that cancer patients face, and it’s the leading cause of death in cancer patients,

apart from the cancer itself, so it’s a very big issue among our patient population.” Lung cancer patients have about a 10 to 15 per cent incidence of thrombosis ... (and) the majority of cancer care is now delivered in an outpatient setting. “All of our guidelines and knowledge about preventing clots is usually for the inpatient setting, so all of a sudden we’ve got a whole bunch of patients who are not getting appropriate preventative intervention. “There’s a big evidence gap in that outpatient setting, and we’re looking to get enough data and enough evidence so that we know how to deal with these patients.” The Victorian Young Achiever Awards will be presented on 9 May.

Dogs in box seat By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater remains in second spot on the Victorian Premier Cricket ladder after a 52-run win against the Camberwell Magpies on Saturday. The Bulldogs posted 9/261 in their first innings on the back of a brilliant 95 from Travis Dean. In reply, Camberwell made a strong start to the run chase with Thomas Rickarby digging in at the top of the order. The Magpies looked in control with the score at 1/48 until a Footscray triple strike changed the momentum of the match. Lucas Dredge, Mitchell Winter-Irving and Hamish Winter-Irving combined for three quick wickets to have the Magpies in trouble at 4/67. The Camberwell middle order batsmen refused to give up though and set about getting the run chase back on track. Justin Lampard (38), Amrith Eldridge (57) and Jack McNamara (36) kept the scoreboard ticking over. However, with no-one able to go on and make a big score,

the pressure began to mount. With the score at 6/207, the Footscray bowlers produced another passage of brilliance, taking the last four wickets for just two runs to seal the impressive victory. As well as his early strike, Dredge remained a constant headache throughout the Camberwell innings as he stormed to his best bowling performance of the season. Dredge finished with figures of 5/31 to easily be the pick of the bowlers. He was well supported by Hamish Winter-Irving who took 2/40. The result takes Footscray to an equal competition best 14-3 win/loss record for the season. The Bulldogs are just two points behind top of the table St Kilda and have a nine-point buffer over third-placed Geelong. In other Victorian Premier Cricket results, Geelong got the better of Hawthorn Monash University, Ringwood defeated Melbourne, Essendon beat Prahran and Dandenong were too good for Northcote.

Gulls make it look easy WILLIAMSTOWN is in the box seat following day one of its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association match against Sunshine. After being sent in to bat by the Crows, Williamstown made 5/232 before declaring. Grant Sandars and Brenton Hodges were the pick of the batsmen with both blasting impressive knocks of 61 and 64 respectively. They were well supported by the top order in what was a consistent performance across the board. Of the seven Seagulls to bat, all made it to double figures. Williamstown captain Craig Sheedy’s decision to declare paid almost immediate dividends with Sunshine losing two wickets before the close of play. The Crows finished the day at 2/20 after 15 overs and will need another 212 runs to secure victory when the match resumes this week. Elsewhere in the VSDCA, top of the table Werribee will need to make 274 against Oakleigh this week if the Tigers are to keep their unbeaten streak going. Melton is on the brink of back-to-back wins after making a strong score of 236 against Noble Park. After being bowled out for 70 in its first innings, Yarraville has already been defeated by Croydon. Altona also batted first on Saturday and made 180 against Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows.

Muirhead’s sizzling summer continues By LIAM TWOMEY IT HAS been an amazing summer for Altona resident James Muirhead. The 20-year-old has gone from rising star to world-beater after bamboozling some of the cricket world’s best batsmen. Following a strong Big Bash League campaign with the Melbourne Stars, the leg spin bowler was selected in the Australian Twenty20 squad for its three match series against England. Being his country’s front line spinner and bowling in front of packed out crowds may have been too much for some but Muirhead thrived on the big stage. From his three international T20 games he took 1/34, 1/17 and 2/13 as Australia stormed to a series whitewash. On the back of his stunning success, Muirhead was selected in the Australian T20 Squad for the upcoming World Cup in Bangladesh. Before the tournament he will also represent Australia in South Africa. Not surprisingly, Cricket Victoria wasted no time getting on the front foot and signed Muirhead to a contract with the Bushrangers for the next four seasons. “I feel like Victoria is the best environment for me to develop my cricket,” Muirhead said earlier this month. “I was born in Melbourne, I live

James Muirhead (shown taking a wicket for Victoria) is this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. 93264 Picture: SUPPLIED in Melbourne and now I can just focus on playing my cricket in Melbourne. “We’ve got a great set up, with the best coaches ... so I’m very happy.” Bushrangers coach Greg Shipperd said he was pleased to have secured Muirhead on a long-term deal. “We seem to be a bit of a factory of spinners at the moment,” Shipperd said. “So to have secured one of Australia’s most promising leg-spinners

- someone who has already shown in the heat of international competition that he’s got the nerve and an exciting skillset - to have him commit to Victoria is a really positive move for our squad. “He’s still got some work to do with his batting and bowling and understanding the game from a spin bowling point of view, but that comes with experience, and he’s got at least four years of it (to come) so we’re thrilled with that.” For his outstanding sporting achievements Muirhead has been

named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Muirhead will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the Western Suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

WEST Newport is on track to claim a spot in the final four in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf competition after performing well with both bat and ball away to Gellibrand on Saturday. Gellibrand was sent in to bat and could only last 54.5 overs out in the middle at Digman Reserve, losing its 10th and final wicket for a total of just 141. West Newport faced 22 overs late in the day’s play and despite losing a wicket in that time, is already halfway through its chase. This weekend the visitor will resume at 1/78. Meanwhile in another crucial A Turf game taking place in the WDCA this weekend, St John’s looks to be in the box seat and will likely avoid the wooden spoon after gaining the upper hand over fellow cellar dweller, Williamstown Congs. After posting a declared 9/182 on Saturday, St John’s has Williamstown Congs stuck on 2/16 going into day two. WITH the third race of the Footscray Cycling Club’s four-race FORM700 Series being washed out, the whole series came down to Sunday’s finale held at Altona’s Drake Boulevard in pictureperfect weather. With serious prize money on offer and so many riders still in the hunt, racing was both hotly contested, aggressive and ‘marked’, with riders willing to chase down any attempted breaks. Total Rush rider Dom Dudkiewicz took three from three races in a hat-trick that saw him score the maximum points available in A Grade’s race and continue a run of astounding form. The attacks started from the get-go, with Miles DaCosta taking the initiative until he clipped a pedal into a corner, went down and scraped some skin. Even though he had an unassailable lead, series winner Dudkiewicz knew that it would be a complex race because the minor placings were up for grabs. “A Grade’s race was very aggressive but also very defensive; there were a lot of guys who were in a position to finish well in the series, so it was on,” he said. “There were attacks and counter attacks, but for the most part there were so many guys willing to chase things down that it had to be a bunch sprint. With two laps to go Paul Redenbach went but there were guys who were willing to do a big turn on the front. I came around the last corner maybe fourth or fifth wheel, put the hammer down and hit 70 kays and got to the line first.” Dudkiewicz finished ahead of the very consistent Ross Mueller in second and Graham Carlson in third.

discipline, respect, and leadership. Most importantly though, I wanted to thank Australia as a nation, and I thought I could do this best by serving my new country in the RAAF.” Deng found that his air force training brought many personal benefits. “Training was excellent, very well conducted throughout by experienced and wellqualified trainers. I gained confidence, discipline, and knowledge. I believe the training brought out the best in me.” On Saturday 21 May 2012, Deng Alier received an award for the ‘Most Outstanding Airman’ from the Hellenic sub branch of the RSL. The night commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, in which Australian forces played a significant role. The singular honour bestowed upon Aircraftman Alier would be a huge accomplishment for anyone, but in his case it is the culmination of a remarkable story. Receiving the award has been a peak experience of his air force career to date.

“I’m so honoured to have received this award which is one of the most historic in Australian Greek relations, and Australia as a nation. I’m so thankful to my unit, Number 21 Squadron for giving me this great opportunity in life,” he says. Number 21 (City of Melbourne) Squadron is based at Point Cook and has a number of permanent and reserve members in its team. Deng looks forward to the future experiences his air force career will bring, and he is proud to be part of the air force team. “I will say that the most important thing, that I have found to be the highlight for me, is that the RAAF accepts you for who you are, not what you have, or where you came from. The spectacular Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show at RAAF Williams will be at Point Cook on the first and second of March 2014. More information about the Air Show is at www.airforce.gov.au/airshows.

THE Royal Australian Air Force has many Victorian locals among its ranks. One of these Victorian locals is Aircraftman Deng Alier. Deng has an amazing story, having first arrived in Australian in 2003 as a refugee from Kenya. “I lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for 10 years and my original dream was to go to America. It was my mother who filled out an Australian refugee humanitarian visa and, after two years of waiting, we were accepted to come to this amazing country. We arrived in Australia on 26 September 2003, and I have been proud to live in this country ever since. My story just shows that whatever plans or dreams we do have, God sometimes has a better way or plan for us.” Deng decided to apply to join the Royal Australian Air Force for many reasons. “Most of my childhood was spent around men in uniform, my father being one of them. I was strongly influenced by the qualities they displayed, such as

Museum flexes military muscle THE RAAF Museum, located at Point Cook, is home to an astonishing range of historic military aircraft. Point Cook residents will know the secret of the interactive flying displays which occur most weeks on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. These displays feature historic aircraft in flight and give spectators the chance to ask the pilot questions on the day. It’s difficult to imagine how much closer you can get to actually flying some of these rare birds. The museum affords visitors a vivid, hands-on experience of the history of the Royal Australian

Air Force and has an enormous collection. There is historical material on show and several hangars of static aircraft. Visitors can also view the restoration hangar where they can currently see the progress of a restoration of an iconic Mosquito, a twin engine multi purpose aircraft from World War II. The museum’s lifeblood is its volunteers who work tirelessly in a variety of different areas, from restoration, to providing guided tours. They are a font of information, and a direct connection with the air force’s rich history, so make time to have a chat when you drop in.

Another big highlight is the museum shop where you can buy clothing, books, models and patches. Aviation fans find it difficult to resist. The RAAF Museum is one way you can im-

merse yourself in Western Melbourne’s rich military aviation history, and the flying displays are not only free, but a chance to see rare historic aircraft in action and talk to the pilot.

Boxkite’s rare turn-out Boxkites left in the world, a team of dedicated volunteers at the RAAF Museum in Victoria held a vision to build a working replica. It took them seven long years to lovingly build the aircraft from the ground up. Hand-built, and made of wood and wire, the Boxkite replica is a reminder of the romance of the early days of aviation when aircraft were very different. The Boxkite replica has recently successfully completed a program of flight testing when the aircraft was flown by Air Vice-Marshal Mark Skidmore (retired), a former test pilot with

the RAAF’s Aircraft Research and Development Unit at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia. Air Vice-Marshal Skidmore said the aircraft flew about one thousand metres and reached a top speed of about 42 miles an hour. “It was an exhilarating and humbling experience, I am honoured and proud to follow those aviators who pioneered military aviation in this country,” he said. The Bristol Boxkite will be on display to the public for the first time at the air show.

Displays in air and on ground WERRIBEE Star readers will experience many more aircraft in the skies than usual from Friday 28 February to Sunday 2 March 2014. But there’s no need to panic, it will all be to celebrate a very special birthday. On the Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March, the Royal Australian Air Force will be hosting the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show at RAAF Williams - Point Cook. This air show is a national event encompassing spectacular air and ground displays of historic and contemporary military aircraft, ranging from the Bristol Boxkite to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. The air show has something for everyone including ground displays from the Air Force Balloon, Air Force Band, Mili-

tary Working Dogs (including the ever popular puppy nursery) as well as flying displays of military aircraft from across the years. Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Davies, recently said the air force was proud to host the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show. “The air show is an opportunity to demonstrate the professionalism and aviation capabilities of today’s defence force.” he said. “We have chosen the theme of Tradition, Innovation and Evolution for the event to reinforce the extraordinary journey of military aviation from hand built aircraft like the Boxkite to the complex and powerful military aircraft of today.” The air show will be open

from 8am to 4pm with flying displays to be held from 10am to 3.30pm. The flying program is the same for both days, so people can get the full experience on either day of the event. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and cost $30 for adults, $10 for 5-15 year olds (children under 5 are free), and $76 for a family ticket. Parking permits can be purchased at a cost of $10, or travel for free by rail to Williams Landing station and free shuttle buses to Point Cook have been built into to the ticket price. To ensure there is as little disruption to local traffic as possible on the weekend, traffic management plans have been put into place and there will be some diversions in the Point Cook area on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March.

THE Bristol Boxkite is an amazing example of early aircraft. It was first developed in Britain in 1910 by the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company and was ‘state of the art’ at the time. A Bristol Boxkite was flown in Australia for the first time on the morning of 1 March 1914, when Lieutenant Eric Harrison, an aviation instructor with the Central Flying School, took one into the air at Point Cook. In 1915, the first Bristol Boxkite to be built in Australia flew its maiden flight. With only a couple of original

Falcons strike By LIAM TWOMEY

Prazak’s title on line By ADEM SARICAOGLU TWO-TIME world champion Diana Prazak does not get to spend a whole lot of time back home. Born and raised in Hoppers Crossing, the 34-year-old boxer made the tough choice to leave everything behind and move to Los Angeles in 2012, and has since proven herself as the best superfeather-weight in the world. Having left behind a fiancé, family and business to make it in the big time, and with a lack of sponsorship making it difficult for her to come home on a regular basis, Prazak admits life on the road has been quite tough over the past two years. “It’s very tough over there,” she said. “It’s a very lonely place to live, and it’s a very lonely sport as well, but it’s all part of my journey in the sport to be the best I can be and the sacrifices that I have to make to get there. “The good side is in my sport I’m accomplishing my goals and that makes me so happy, to be able to sacrifice so much and achieve what all the sacrifice was for. “So that’s incredible - making my family proud and my country proud.” Prazak was home for Christmas for some

Prazak has since set up shop in Footscray alongside former undefeated champion and trainer Lucia Rijker in preparation for the upcoming bout. The two will meet in the ring this Saturday at the Melbourne Pavilion, and it will be Prazak’s first fight on home soil since relocating to LA. “Things are going really well,” Prazak said of her preparation. “We’re in the final stages of preparation, which are going as they should, and I’m really excited to be at home and to get the opportunity to fight at home. “I haven’t fought here for two-and-a-half years, and I’ve been fighting everywhere else in the world and it’s a great opportunity to be able to come home and have the hometown support and everyone that’s helped support me come and watch.” Prazak admits she knows little about O’Connell, but is sure of one thing. “I’m expecting a really tough fight,” she said. “I’m expecting her to bring everything she’s got to me in the ring to try to take my belt off me. “I’m preparing for somebody who wants what I have, and I had to work really hard to get everything I have.”

CITY WEST Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the Victorian Netball League ladder following a crushing win over Fed Uni Ballarat 61-26 on Wednesday night. Despite the eventual lopsided score-line, it was tough going for the Falcons in the first quarter as they were forced to fight hard against a fired up Pride outfit. However, after taking a 14-10 lead into the opening break Marg Lind’s team was able to assert its dominance. The Falcons scored another 14 goals in the second term while restricting Fed Uni to just four. The 28-14 deficit was never going to be overturned as City West maintained its dominance in the second half. City West scored another 31 goals and restricted the Pride to just 12 to seal the percentageboosting win. Shooting combination Julia Knott and Alice Teague-Neeld were outstanding around goals with both scoring at over 85 per cent efficiency. Teague-Neeld finished with 35 goals from 38 attempts while Knott scored 26 goals from her 30 shots taken. Elsewhere in the VNL, the news was also good for VU Western Lightning, which was able to secure its first win of the season. The Lightning proved too strong for Southern Stars in a low scoring match, 34-31. After suffering a smashing in week one, VU was out to make amends against the Saints and opened up a six-goal lead at half time. Despite being outscored in the final two quarters, the gap was enough to hang on for a three goal win. The Lightning now has a 1-1 win/loss record for the season and is in eighth spot on the VNL Championship ladder. When round three gets underway this week, they will take on the sixth placed Monash University Storm while the Falcons will meet fourth placed DC North Blaze.

The Warriors’ way By LIAM TWOMEY

KEVIN HILLIER

Gift is the place to be PENNELL Reserve Braybrook is the place to be this Sunday when the Victorian Athletic League run the fourth annual Maribyrnong Gift. The eight race program starts at noon and there will be plenty of food and drink for the spectators and activities for the kids plus some of the best sprinting and distances runners in the state. The prize pool is over $5000 and there will be a bookie on hand if you want to have a wager on the events. No doubt the Hargreaves brothers will be to the fore as usual. The race is all part of the lead up to Australia’s biggest spring the Stawell Gift at Easter. More details at val.org.au

Alisha, Emilee, Chloe, David and Luke are enjoying life on the greens for the Western Warriors 114375 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT the national championships and also against state squads. “We have now also got a boy and a girl who have been selected to represent Victoria in New Zealand in April.” As well as introducing young athletes to the sport of lawn bowls, the Western Warriors are ensuring the future of local clubs.

With a number of teams struggling to maintain strong playing numbers, Norris said the next generation was the key to long-term success for everyone in the sport. “Besides wanting to actively give kids something to do, we also see that these kids are the future of lawn bowls,” he said. “We find it very hard to get peo-

ple to come in at 40 years of age. We believe the juniors won’t always stay as bowlers but when they pass through the ranks, they’ll be back in future years because they have that mentality of playing bowls.” Anyone wanting to find out more information about the Western Warriors can contact Terry Norris on 0402 927 705 or tnorris36@hotmail.com.

WERRIBEE will have its first hit out for the season in a practice match against the Box Hill Hawks this Saturday at Arden Street. The development game is at 10am with the seniors at 1pm. There are a lot of new faces at the club and still a few spots on the list to be decided so it will be most interesting. Williamstown travel to the EFC High Performance Centre at Tullamarine to play Essendon from 1pm Saturday. The interest will be to see the large number of big name recruits the Seagulls have signed in a very busy off season. Port Melbourne don’t play this weekend but have released a calendar which I saw during the week and at $20 it is a must have for Borough fans. There are some outstanding pictures past and present. They have recruited like no other club in my memory, but sport is full of fairytale stories and the winter Olympics reminds me of Steven Bradbury winning his gold medal or the legendary ‘Miracle on Ice’ Men’s hockey game between the USA and Russia in 1980. THE Western Warriors are launching the next generation of stars on the greens. The lawn bowls squad, which is for junior bowlers in the west-metro region, has built a rich history on developing young talent since it was launched in 2006. After nearly a decade of success, coach Terry Norris is aiming to expand the squad even more in the coming years. “Basically the idea is to get kids outside and give them something to play,” Norris said. “Our aims are to get the juniors to understand and play the game to the best of their ability and to foster companionship and camaraderie. “We also teach kids how to be respectful to their team-mates, their coaches, the opposition and anyone connected with bowls.” Squad members range from 10 to 18 years of age and are given the opportunity to compete in a range of tournaments and events throughout the state. Norris said the Warriors have also helped a growing number of promising juniors reach the next level of competition. “From our junior squad, we have a pathway to the bowls Victoria under-18 junior development squad of which we pick kids to represent Victoria,” he said. “I’m pleased to say in that timeframe we have had 12 kids that have gone on to represent the state both in
