Trolls attack By MELISSA MEEHAN INTERNET trolls have stolen the identity of an Upwey family whose son battles an inoperable brain tumour. Penne Schwarz said she was gobsmacked and shocked when she stumbled across a fund-raising website using her son Joshua’s photo and story. “I typed his name into Google, and there it was, all of the information was copied from our original fund-raising site,” Ms Schwarz said. “Then I saw they had raised $3500 under his name. “They are taking advantage of a horrible situation and people’s kindness.” As soon as she realised the site was a scam, Ms Schwarz posted a warning on the Joshua’s Journey Facebook page. In November 2013, Ms Schwarz and husband Wolfgang received the devastating news that their beautiful baby boy had an inoperable malignant brain tumour, caused by a rare genetic disorder. Doctors said they couldn’t save him, and gave him just months to live. While Ms Schwarz said she hadn’t done anything personally about the site, because she had better things to focus her energy on - like looking after her sick son. “I am still stunned that someone could do that,” she said. Dozens of her friends set to work to close the page down, even contacting the website directly. They found that the website was being managed from the Philippines, Arizona and Sydney. The facilitator of the page, Stephen Rix from Sydney, replied, denying any

fraudulent behaviour. “No, this is not fraudulent at all, it is being developed and these are place markers for the developers,” he said. “You will note that there is not even a way to contribute money. I am creating this site to help people. But I admire your concern, please check back with us in a few months.” When pushed for a further explanation, Mr Rix said that he looked at a number of fund-raisers and picked a variety of ones that he felt were relevant and worthwhile supporting to give to his developer to create a website he was trying to achieve, but offered to remove the page immediately. “I apologise if you found me using Joshua’s identity in this manner,” he said. “I can understand that you initially found this offensive, I am just trying to build something that helps others.” Mr Rix said the site was not raising money from the use of Joshua’s story - as there was no way for people to donate. Ms Schwarz said that with so many people wanting to help it was heartbreaking to see someone try to take advantage. Another dinner and auction fundraiser will be held in Joshua’s name by a family friend on Saturday 22 March at the Mulgrave Country Club. Jersey gesture By REBECCA BILLS SIMON CLARKE has given his winning jersey from the Jayco Herald Sun Tour to Monbulk Aquatic Centre in a gesture of thanks. After spending his summer in his hometown of Selby, Clarke used the new gym facilities at Monbulk Aquatic Centre to prepare for his Australian races. Family friend, supporter and Monbulk Aquatic Centre’s Membership manager Amanda O’Callaghan said Clarke was instrumental in getting his team across the line. “We are all just thrilled to bits about the win. I’m really, really pleased for him,” she said. “He’s is now probably in the best position for his Tour de France this year. “He is such a nice young man, his mum still lives locally and his brothers are involved in the riding, we are just so pleased.” Clarke gave the centre his unwashed winning jersey with the message, “Monbulk Aquatic Centre, thanks for the support and use of the amazing new gym – Simon Clarke.” Clarke claimed the overall victory at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour that was scheduled to run from 5 to 9 February. In unusual circumstances, the final Queen stage of the five-day tour was cancelled due to extreme fire danger in the area. Clarke said everyone was happy with the week of racing and especially the win. “The guys did a great job and worked really hard,” he said. Clarke said his team were confident going into the final stage after his win in Bendigo, but like any bike race anything can happen. “We were up for the challenge, and it was a shame that we didn’t get a chance to do that.” Clarke has now returned to his home in Italy for three weeks of training before heading off to Sweden for his next competition.

“We have been running these relaythons for a number of years now. A couple of our athletes are regularly in at the Royal Children’s Hospital for ongoing medical assistance, so it is nice for the club to be able to do something to help out in raising funds”. Fresh push to have road sealed car drives past.” Mr Teasdale said while Pinnocks Road wasn’t a main road through Emerald, many drivers used it as a bypass road when the Belgrave-Gembrook Road was closed. “I am under the impression that Pinnocks Road was a priority one to be sealed until it came out how expensive it would be to seal it. “It has seemed to go from a priority one to no priority at all.” Mr Teasdale said that there were many reasons his suggestion should be considered by the council. “I don’t think the council understands the seriousness of the issues involved,” he said. “All the residents signed a petition to have the road sealed, what quenched their effort was the unrealistic $50,000 and over figures that they simply couldn’t afford.” Mr Teasdale said he was disappointed that residents were being ignored because of a SCS in 2008. “How long must we suffer for?” “The council has not found an answer to the dust problem, and in the meantime aged residents, babies, children, asthmatics, recovering heart patients and bedridden people are having to breathe choking dust.”

ANDREW Klaussner, the man charged with murdering Elizabeth Barnes at Yarra Junction last year, has appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. Mr Klaussner, 39, from Croydon, was arrested in October last year by Homicide Squad detectives following an investigation into the death of Ms Barnes, 37, at a property in Tarrango Road on 28 September 2013. The accused went before Magistrate Donna Bakos at a committal mention hearing on Tuesday 18 February. The matter was adjourned to 16 June 2014 and Mr Klaussner was remanded in custody.

EMERALD resident Kevin Teasdale has hit back at Cardinia Council, saying that residents had the right to be taken seriously. Last week, the Mail reported Mr Teasdale’s request that the council seal Pinnocks Road, citing health and safety issues of the dusty, bumpy road. But the council Special Charge Scheme (SCS) was proposed for the road in 2008, and did not have enough support from residents. Cardina Council’s manager of assets and development Paul Richardson said the council then contacted property owners with a questionnaire to determine whether they would support a special charge scheme for the works; and they were advised of an estimated average cost of $19,000, depending on landholdings. Mr Richardson said the council did not expect Pinnocks Road to be sealed in the next five years. It (the dust) infiltrates the lungs and homes to the extent that health is affected, and it’s impossible to aerate houses without someone standing guard at the window to close it as a car approaches,” Mr Teasdale said. “Our cars are covered in dust every morning - you can see it kick up every time a

HILLS residents have slammed lycra-clad weekend cyclists for ignoring fire danger warnings in the Dandenong Ranges. Roger Willsher has lived in the Dandenongs for more than 43 years. He has been involved in firefighting for many of those years, and he and his wife are auxiliary members of their local brigades. “On Saturday (9 February), we were emailed by the CFA to evacuate from our home due to a forecast

extreme fire danger rating for the Sunday,” Mr Willsher said. “We left The Patch early Sunday morning, the temperature was already exceeding 30 degrees and the fire danger index was at 85.” Mr Willsher said both he and his wife were gobsmacked by what they witnessed while they themselves were evacuating. “Groups of lycra-clad cyclists on bicycles were climbing the hills that we were told to evacuate,” he said. “And then others we knew chose to stay at home.”

A GYM in Kilsyth was raided as part of a number of warrants targeting Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (OMCG) properties across the state. Police arrested a number of people and seized drugs and firearms as part of the raids, none believed to be from the gym. Some18 people were arrested as part of the raids with firearms, drugs, cash, ammunition and explosives seized from a number of properties. Police executed more than 60 warrants from 5.30am on Thursday morning at a number of metropolitan and rural locations. The warrants were executed at clubhouses and private properties linked to the Comanchero OMCG. The operation involved the Echo Taskforce along with a range of other units from Crime Command and local police.

Properties left in limbo By JESSE GRAHAM CHANGES to the controversial Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) restrictions may not be seen in the first half of the year, rendering thousands of local properties worthless even as a review is underway. Planning Minister Matthew Guy told the Mail on Friday 21 February that a government review of the BMO is taking place, which is expected to be complete before mid-year. “The review is currently being undertaken alongside discussions with community representatives and relevant government authorities, and will be completed in the first half of 2014,” he said. However, Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister said she had been unable to state the local case on the overlay, which had left thousands of land owners unable to build. Cr McAllister said three meetings with the minister had been cancelled, with her most

recent one, set for Wednesday 12 February, cancelled while she was enroute. “He got called in to see the Premier, so we can’t argue with that,” she said. “(But) I wasn’t very impressed - there were three of us heading in to see him. “We’ve been waiting for that meeting for months.” Cr McAllister said she was hoping to talk to Mr Guy and argue that the BMO should be in alignment with expert opinion, and should allow people to build where they currently can’t. “Our position remains unchanged,” she said. “We’re very keen to put our case forward and to find out what his plans are.” The BMO applies to land that may be significantly affected in the event of a bushfire - it requires new developments to have appropriate bushfire protection measures. However, as a result, the

firm overlay has meant that many blocks of land cannot be built on, as developments cannot possibly meet the strict requirements. Mr Guy wrote to Seymour MP Cindy McLeish on 10 December last year, saying that the BMO is “complex and needs to be simplified”, while maintaining that community safety was still paramount. At the time, Mr Guy said he hoped to have the relevant advice by the beginning of 2014, with changes to Victoria’s Planning Provisions to result from that. The overlay was developed with recommendations from the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission and was introduced in November 2011. Mr Guy’s office was contacted about the meeting cancellations with Cr McAllister, but no response was given on the matter. Cr McAllister said she believed a new meeting was being organised.

THE FATE of the Olinda Pool still hangs in the balance, with council officers expected to table a report on the pool in March. The pool was closed late last year, with the council citing irreparable cracks and low attendance as the reason. Olinda Pool campaigner John Faull said it was frustrating that the residents of Olinda were still waiting for results of investigations - considering the pool was closed in December. “The councillors have met with us a number of times, they have been proactive and co-operative with our committee,” Mr Faull said. “It’s frustrating that we are still waiting for an answer, quite sickening really - but we are still expecting a positive result.” This week, officers provided councillors with an updated briefing about the current state of the Olinda Pool. A vocal supporter of reopening the pool, councillor Jason Callanan said on his blog that since the pool was discussed at the council’s 28 January meeting, further engineering inspections, workshops and site visits with engineers, pool specialists and manufacturers have been conducted to fully explore the range of options available. He said the councillors were told the pool had significant cracks and was porous, resulting in significant water leakage. Water leakage, he said, had resulted in a high ground

Healesville neighbours Jock Purves and Bob Gannaway signed on and quickly recruited Perry Carter from Launching Place, Diane Roberts from Yarra Glen, Neil Jorgensen from East Warburton and Felicity Nolle from Chirnside Park. For Diane, 68, the ride will be a return to younger days when she rode motor scooters. She has kept her licence alive and said she was looking forward to the challenge of such a long ride, as well as the challenge of fund-raising for beyondblue and raising awareness of mental health issues.

Opinion TAFE is critical IN 2011 I managed Chisholm TAFE’s careers and employment services, as BlueScope Steel announced 200 redundancies at Hastings. The immediate government response involved supporting Chisholm to provide skills assessment, career counselling, and training grants to affected workers. These provisions were through existing TAFE services and existing TAFE staff. Regularly BlueScope’s workers were overwhelmed by the TAFE’s professionalism and dedication during this very challenging period. TAFEs operate as more than training providers, delivering a range of valuable services to enhance our communities. TAFEs partner with industries so workers meet emerging skill needs. TAFEs partner community and cultural groups so that pathways are accessible and effective. TAFEs assist local businesses, partner schools and universities, and regularly lead government initiatives addressing community disadvantage. The services provided to BlueScope were also available to most individuals, businesses, or industry partners. Yet the Napthine Government’s current attack upon TAFE specifically targets the funding that delivers this range of community services. In light of increasing automotive, manufacturing and processing industry redundancies, this dismantling of critical TAFE services must be recognised as short-sighted, damaging and irresponsible. If Labor is elected this November, we will reverse this Napthine Government’s irresponsible decision, and restore funding to TAFE’s community service obligations. It is not only a major worry near a national park as the article stated, it is also a great concern in the whole community right throughout our country. It is time now for a far better control of owners of cats to be made to have total control of the cat in their care. The number of people who allow their pet cat to go outside into the garden to go to the toilet, even for a short time without being observed, should be made fully aware of what can and usually does happen when they are free to then stalk the wildlife in the garden. We, the wildlife carers and the vets, see the injured animal after the cat drops the mauled wildlife at the feet of the home owner. Believe me, this is a common occurrence and this has happened to us three times in the past week when three members of the public have delivered to us two feathertail gliders and one sugar glider, to be cared for by us. Two deaths were caused because of someone’s pet cat and we are only a small wildlife shelter. The majority of people believe that their cat is an ‘angel’ and their cat would not hunt wildlife. That may be the case in some instances, but it may be your cat. The authorities from all areas have to promote to the public and also to our children at schools all the dangers to our wildlife of what can happen because of an uncontrolled cat. A cat usually breaks the skin of the ‘wildlife’ and this can infect it from the ‘poison’ on the teeth of the cat when the skin is penetrated. Very few survive if the skin is penetrated by the cat, and it is extremely hard to find the bite mark. Cat owners can stand up now and do the right thing with their cats by simply confining them to an enclosure away from ‘our’ unique wildlife. Responsible cat owners do that. Wildlife carers receive many injured wildlife caused by a cat bite. It would be great if all local councils and governments undertook the responsibility to promote to all cat owners the correct and responsible way to own a cat. In general the majority of the public love our wildlife.

Stumble to tumble I HAVE written many times about how fantastic the good citizens of Cockatoo are. Around the beginning of November, on an extremely rainy day I fell off the pavement in McBride Street - luckily onto my knees. Although that hurt, I was kindly helped up by a young lady and an Indian gentleman from the restaurant next to the Nell Mitchell Op-Shop where I volunteer and I haven’t had time to thank them. It took many weeks for me to get the confidence to cross the street. To go back to work I had to admit that I suffer from anxiety. So on Wednesday 19 February I saw it was raining and I freaked. I thought I had it under control; you see I had worked out where on the street there were no pavements and where the flat parts were. So I set out telling myself “you can do this” and I did. But my heart pounded; once at work it wore off. Today, I was walking down the street doing my baby steps when Colin Wales, I hope he doesn’t mind my naming him, came to my rescue, helped me to the post office and milk bar and back to the op-shop. He gave me some advice, too. I am told it can take up to a year to overcome this - I hope not. I have a fantastic family and lovely friends who help me through this, it just seems to take so long. Water project cash flows By REBECCA BILLS SOME $15 million is on offer for local projects through round two of the Living Victoria Fund. Member for Gembrook Brad Battin said the Living Victoria initiative was about securing the state’s future water supplies, keeping future water costs down and ensuring neighbourhoods remained green and liveable. “The Coalition Government is building a better Victoria by transforming our urban water systems to focus on whole of water cycle principles,” he said. “This will deliver more efficient, more sustainable and more affordable water services throughout the state. “It makes sense to use rainwater and recycled water for tasks like watering gardens or flushing toilets, instead of using our valuable high-quality drinking water.” Mr Battin said round one of the $50 million Living Victoria Fund supported more than 40 projects across the state. “These urban water reforms will help Victoria avert the need for more expensive largescale infrastructure like desalination plants and the north-south pipeline in the future,” he said. Round two of funding can assist community organisations, education institutes, sporting groups, the private sector and local councils in accelerating innovative water projects. “I encourage local organisations to consider the opportunity for whole of water cycle projects in the Gembrook electorate and become part of the broader improvement in Victoria’s water security,” he said. “The latest round of ‘Living Victoria’ funding is an excellent opportunity for communities to develop local water projects that deliver an economic and environmental dividend to the area.” To ensure the benefits of the smarter use of rainwater and recycled water are utilised throughout Victoria, there has been up to $3 million set aside for community and not-forprofit organisation-led projects alongside up to $5 million for regional projects. Firies going extra mile THEY’RE already heroes in our eyes, but Dandenong Ranges firefighters are now protecting the lives and property of others as they battle blazes across the state. Dandenong Ranges Fire Brigade Group group officer Rod Stebbing said a large number of local firefighters, from 15 brigades, had been out and about over the last three weeks fighting fires in the Grampians and Mallee regions. Mr Stebbing said teams were on a

rotating roster helping to battle the fires across the state. “We have teams helping out in alpine areas near the NSW border,” he said. “We’re sending a crew every three to four days.” He said teams were also helping out at the coal mine fire at Morwell - despite firefighters in the Dandenongs having little to no experience in this type of fires. “They are very different conditions,” Mr Stebbing said.

Snapped up train race sets pace By REBECCA BILLS PUFFING BILLY’s 33rd Great Train Race has sold out in a record 10 days. A total of 3300 places were snapped up by runners from near and far, eager to take part in the iconic race. Puffing Billy’s special events manager Matt Collopy said last year 3000 places were filled in 15 days, and this year 3300 were snapped up in just 10 days. “This is great for us, it just shows how popular the event is,” he said. “We would love to accommodate more runners, but logistically we have some limitations in terms of accommodating 3300 people at the start, along the race route, and at the finish area within Emer-

ald Lake Park.” In the race’s 33year history, Mr Collopy said in the earlier years of the event Puffing Billy Preservation Society president (and current CEO) John Robinson hosted VIPs on the race train. “The driver was so keen to get going, he took off without John on board who was seen sprinting up the platform at Belgrave to board the train,” he said. “Luckily, John got on board in time and was heard saying, “I think my chances of ever competing have been ruled out - I struggled to run the 100m along the platform, let alone the 13 kilometres up the hills to Emerald Lake Park”.” Mr Collopy said a more recent highlight was runner Steve Kelly winning the race for the

Morris scores a silver By REBECCA BILLS FROM humble beginnings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; jumping into a leech-infested pond in Lilydale â&#x20AC;&#x201C; David Morris snapped up Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics. Soaring his way to silver, 29 year-old aerial skier Morris came in second on 17 February at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. Morris jumped strongly throughout the finals phase, but was last to qualify in the eightman final and the four-man final. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I snuck in, which is fine,â&#x20AC;? he said â&#x20AC;&#x153;And then did a quad twist to get into the super-final, which was amazing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually surprised I made it in â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I basically just closed my eyes and waited for the ground to come and it was right in front of me.â&#x20AC;? Morris said before his final jump, he was up the top think-

ing this is the furthest he has been in an Olympic format, so he was just going to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;throw it downâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and see what happens. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought that was a spectacular super final, and it was a privilege to be a part of that,â&#x20AC;? he said. After finishing 13th at the Vancouver Olympics, Morris walked away from the sport in 2011 after he injured his hip and had to have surgery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came back from the surgery, but I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prepared for the Olympic hype and the downfall after that,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an experienced athlete, and I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prepared for the injury and the rehab and it really got to me, and I basically took a year off. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I took the time off and decided I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t finished â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I worked my butt off, started back from the very bottom of the field again and had to work my way back and earn every privilege.â&#x20AC;?

Olympic Winter Institute of Sport chief executive officer Geoff Lipshut, who originally rejected Morris, said he was thrilled with Morrisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; result. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dave has put in a remarkable effort,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the same big end top range as the other guys, but he did everything he possibly could and played it perfectly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He executed every time and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make a mistake.â&#x20AC;? Streetlights savings on Chef is sharpening up the cards for council By KATH GANNAWAY

POWER bills are set to drop by millions for Yarra Ranges Council, as streetlights are overhauled with environmentally friendly light bulbs. The council announced on 19 February that it would be upgrading all of its 7000 current streetlights and replacing bulbs with T5 fluorescent bulbs through a rollout plan. The T5 bulbs use 70 per cent less energy than current streetlight bulbs, with the $1.85 million project paying for itself over four years. Mayor Fiona McAllister said the project would save the council around $8 million over the bulbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 20-year lifespan and help council to meet its greenhouse emissions reduction target of 30 per cent by 2020. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This project will reduce our annual emissions by 2250 tonnes, achieving 40 per cent of our reduction target,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fantastic that we are saving almost $8 million over the next 20 years.â&#x20AC;? The rollout is expected to complete by midyear, with Lilydale, Mooroolbark and Chirnside Park currently having their streetlights upgraded. Upgraded streetlights will produce clearer light, with reduced glare and will meet Australian standards for safety and light levels. Yarra Ranges Council assured residents that works would not interrupt power supply to residential properties or businesses over the rollout and that parking and traffic flow would be minimally affected. Motoring mythbusters MYTHS about speed cameras are the focus of a new advertising campaign which targets young male drivers and those who continuously flaunt road rules. The Speed Camera Urban Myths campaign, launched on Wednesday 19 February, will use radio, digital, cinema and billboard advertising to address myths about speed cameras. Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells launched the new campaign and said it would target men aged 18 to 25 who made up one of the eight Yarra Ranges road deaths in 2013. The same demographic accounted for 27 out of the 242 state-wide roadtoll fatalities last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This advertisement campaign will target young driv-

ers, especially at-risk 18-25 year old males, who are over represented in the number of recorded deaths and serious injuries on Victorian roads,â&#x20AC;? Mr Wells said. Mr Wells said the campaign would use independent research to present facts about speed cameras and their positive effect on the road toll. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A common urban myth is that speed cameras exist solely to raise revenue for government,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Monash University Accident Research Centre found that death and serious injury is reduced by, on average, 47 per cent at intersections where a speed camera is present. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no doubt that speed cameras have contributed to slashing the road toll

from more than 1000 in the 1970s to 242 people last year, but one road death is one too many.â&#x20AC;? Mr Wells said that all revenue from speed camera fines goes directly back into road safety initiatives, through the Better Roads Trust. He said that as long as people continued to speed and break the law, fines and infringements from speed cameras would continue to be issued.Speed cameras are a main component of the Victorian Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Road Safety Strategy, which aims to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 30 per cent by 2022. Christine Fyffe is our experienced and hardworking state representative in the seat of Evelyn. original flamenco music that was featured live on the opening episode on the season two opening episode of the Seven Networks Winners and Losers program. Arts under one banner By REBECCA BILLS STATE Minister for the Arts Heidi Victoria launched the Yarra Ranges Culture Tracks program at Burrinja last Friday. In a bid to bring all arts facilities in the Yarra Ranges together, Culture Tracks is the newest arts initiative by Yarra Ranges Council. Ms Victoria said the launch of Culture Tracks was a celebration of creative energy, teaching, a very strong and connected local community and partnerships between Arts Victoria and the local shire. “We need to remember that the partnerships go even further back too, to the people that have these ideas for such programs and pass them along to others to match such a reality,” she said. “The local residents in these areas are so lucky that they can walk across the road and find something so stimulating. “This program is of a very high calibre and I say a big congratulations to those who have had a hand in putting this together.” Yarra Ranges Manager of Arts, Culture and Heritage Greg Box said Culture Tracks was Yarra Ranges’ new arts program across all cultural facilities in the area. “Having built and redeveloped places like Burrinja and built Yarra

Budget beauty By REBECCA BILLS FORMER Monbulk resident Leonie Piper is passionate about providing inspirational and practical beauty tips on a budget. Her new book Gorgeous on a Shoestring covers everything from keep-fit ideas, to healthy beauty suggestions and practical beauty tips that won’t break the bank. Ms Piper, who previously lived in Monbulk for 18 years, says the book is aimed at women of all ages who find it hard to maintain their beauty regime on a tight budget. “For whatever reason - the new mortgage, baby or divorce - I want to inspire and encourage these women not to give up,” she said. “I have shared all my tips and ideas on how to create your own skin care products, revamp old ones and even make your own fragrances. “I cover fitness on a shoestring and also how to stay ‘gorgeous on the inside’ on a budget - there are some great health drink recipes included.” Ms Piper has been in the beauty industry for many years as an experienced beauty consultant and nail technician. “When I lived in Monbulk I was the local nail technician and over those years I observed and learned a lot from my clients - I also used to share all my ideas over my beauty desk with them,” she said. “I have written Gorgeous on a Shoestring to now share these tips with a wider audience.” The eBook version of Gorgeous on a Shoestring has already received six five-star reviews on Amazon, with reader Amanda Shallard saying the book inspired her. Leonie Piper will be visiting Accent on Main in Monbulk on 4 March. The book is available worldwide on Amazon and The Book Depository and in store at most Dymocks and Collins/ABC stores.

Next week’s action will see Knox Gardens at home to bottom side Monbulk while the Gully journeys to Upwey Tecoma. The calculators will be working overtime to determine percentage should both sides lose and either Upper Gully or Knoxfield sneak a win. Upwey Tecoma’s leader Matthew Mulcahy played his best hand this season with a magnificent unbeaten century against Knoxfield at Carrington Park. The Knights set a target of 264 only to see Mulcahy at his peak combining with reliable scrapper Richard Lizza (58) and Darren Spence (36n.o.) at the end to secure a terrific win for the loss of only five wickets. Knoxfield’s Scott McKenzie had nothing left in the tank claiming 4/75 and the mantle of the association’s leading wicket taker with 32. Cody Morris was the difference between Eildon Park and Ferntree Gully after his 140 not out last week enabling the Panthers to reach 263. The Gully Blues lost three early

wickets and was under constant pressure from spinner Jarrod Hicks who took four wickets. Ferntree Gully eventually fell for 192 with Jayden Bradbury bringing up his 400th run for the season with a determined 91. Monbulk were behind the eight ball against Johnson Park after being toppled last week for just 104 and the Sharks resuming at no wicket for 60. Seville bats take command of finals POSITIONS for finals are up for grabs in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, with up to six teams vying for three positions. Only reigning premiers Seville have sown up their finals ticket with the rest clambering over themselves to feature beyond the home and away season. Despite clinching a finals berth last week, Seville certainly hasn’t taken its foot off the pedal with a commanding performance with the bat on day one of its clash at Mount Evelyn. After a bright start, Seville were pegged back by the home side with an intriguing battle ensuing between bat and ball. Adam Burns got things rolling for the visitors, but wickets to Kane Jones kept things in check. With Gareth Fraser eeking out wickets on consecutive balls on the stroke of lunch, the Blues were left at 4/103 with the game well in the balance. Rohan Prouse (67) was playing a dogged innings, and despite looking scratchy early, his innings blossomed after the tea break, and with the support of a flourishing innings from Andy Kay, the Blues took the game away from Mount Evelyn. With an 88 run stand with

Prouse, followed by a 96 run partnership with Ryan Akers (41), Kay took toll on the tiring attack with a wide arrange of shots showcasing his experience and skill to score a much deserved century and virtually bat his side to an unbreakable position posting 318. If Mount Evelyn is to feature in finals action it will need to chase the large target. They certainly possess the firepower to keep the run rate at the asking rate but on recent performances the bigger question is can they bat the 75 overs against a formidable attack to ensure they give themselves a chance of chasing the target. New title for trophy FERNTREE Gully and District Cricket Association’s Junior Cricketer of the Year will now be known as the Glenn Maxwell Trophy. The award will be presented at the junior association night on 31 March. FTGDCA general manager Steve Brown said Maxwell is the only junior player to have won this award twice in 2004 and 2005 while playing with South Belgrave prior to being selected in Australian colours. “We thought it was a fitting tribute,” he said. “He is an inspiration to many young cricketers locally and he still finds time to come back to teach juniors whenever he can.” Speaking after recently scoring 94 and 127 for Victoria against New South Wales, Maxwell said he is truly humble and honoured that this award has been named after him. “However I will be unable to present it on 31 March as I will be in Bangladesh with the Australian squad for the T20 World Cup,” he said. Maxwell first played senior cricket with South Belgrave aged 11 and represented the FTGDCA in Country Week when he was 15.

Monbulk wins all round took 2/2 and Tam Noonan who retired on 30. The Under 13s now play a home semi-final this week on Thursday and Friday night (27 and 28 February) starting at 5.15pm at Monbulk main ground. The Under 12s also finished the season in style winning a high scoring game. Monbulk made 5/215 to defeat Johnson Park 148. Will Fahey took 2/13 and six boys made their highest score for the season - Rab Noonan 31, Tahlen Fleischer 31, Josh Spencer 30, Tyren Utting 26, Campbell Dennison 23 and Sage Famer 14. Two Under 10 Big Bash teams played each other at Monbulk to finish off their first season of cricket. Isaac Hylton-Stewart and Ryan Sturt had great games. It is going to be a big week of cricket at Monbulk this week with the Under 15s playing on Wednesday night and the Under 13s playing a semi-final on Thursday and Friday night.

Weekend of medals YARRA Ranges Athletics athletes competed at the Eastern Region Athletics Championships over the weekend. The championships held at the Nunawading track are a pre-cursor for the state championships in a months’ time. A total of 23 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze medals won by 24 athletes was the reward for an exciting weekend of competition. Add to that a yet to be determined number of personal bests by many by athletes who did not win a medal. Their effort and the support they receive from fellow club members is the reason why athletics is such an enjoyable and rewarding sport. Braydon Woolridge, Lateisha Willis and Georgia Laven are three athletes from the club who all won three gold medals each. IT WAS another great weekend for the Monbulk Junior Cricket Team with all teams winning. Monbulk Under 15s made 5/193 and defeated Eildon Park 10/141. Stand out performers with the ball were James Fenby who took 5/23 and Adrian Skordilis 3/11. With the bat, Aaron Gillard was again in the runs with 51 not out as was John Badgery who made 30. The Under 15s are still top of the ladder and play their last home and away match this Wednesday night (26 February) at Monbulk v Upper Ferntree Gully starting at 5pm. They then have the weekend off before a home semi-final on the 8 and 9 March. The Under 13 Hawks/Knights team also had a great win. They needed to win to sew up a finals berth and did so against Knox Gardens in a fantastic team performance to finish second on the ladder. Monbulk won 5/157 to 100.
