INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Star Ambitions 2022-23
Our commitment to nurturing our young people and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow goes hand in hand with our pledge to the people who make it possible, our employees. We are a learning organisation that is committed to the ongoing development of all staff – from those taking their first steps in a career in education to the most experienced senior professionals.
By offering a first-class professional development programme that is targeted to meet individual needs and goals, Star Ambitions aims to support all Star schools to achieve academic and operational excellence and to enable every colleague to fulfil their personal and professional potential.
How to use the Star Ambitions brochure
This brochure contains details of all programmes and training sessions scheduled and coordinated by Star Institute and statutory and mandatory training coordinated and delivered at a school level.
For each programme and event, the following is provided:
• Programme or event title and details
• Participation status - whether the programme is:
- Statutory - required by law. Star is legally required to provide as defined by law or where a statutory body has instructed organisations to provide training on the basis of legislation
- Mandatory - attendance is required by the Trust to minimise risk, provide assurance against policies and ensure Star staff meet required standards and best practice guidance
- Developmental - attendance is optional and at the discretion of the Principal or Headteacher.
• Target
audience
• Renewal timescales, where appropriate, for statutory and mandatory training
• Number and duration of sessions in the programme or training
• Dates and times of sessions (where applicable) which have been scheduled to accommodate prayers where possible.
Also included is:
• An ‘at a glance’ overview of the 2022-23 Star Ambitions programmes
• An ‘at a glance’ library of previous training materials.
Programme delivery
As with last year, most sessions will continue to be delivered remotely via Zoom for 2022-23. Where programmes include face-to-face elements, this is clearly indicated.
Online protocols and guidance
To maximise professional learning and secure vibrant and productive learning communities through remote delivery, Star Institute has developed online protocols and guidance. These are included on page 56. These are sent to participants ahead of sessions and leaders are asked to encourage staff to follow them.
Protocols include:
• Pre-registration requirements for each session 1 week before the delivery date
• Ensuring participants download personal invites with joining links into calendars (otherwise there may be a need to re-register)
• Carrying out any necessary pre-checks on IT equipment, connectivity and links and ensuring video and microphones are working
• Preparing for online learning in the same judicious way they would for face-to-face training
• Observing professional behaviour regarding punctuality, attendance and dress code
• Ensuring effective interactions and communications with cameras on and microphones unmuted when discussions take place. Where participants have joined a session but are not engaging, they will be moved into the waiting room as this impacts the quality of discussion in breakouts
• Providing correct screen names that accurately reflect participants, particularly if joining as a group
• Ensuring participants rename themselves if this is a session requirement
• Informing Star Institute when participants join as a group from one login, including completion of the Group Attendance Form newly launched for 202223.
HOW TO REGISTER PARTICIPANTS
Senior Leaders should register participants by completing the Star Ambitions participant enrolment form and returning it to Star Institute by Friday 15th July.
The form has been pre-populated with the names of all staff currently employed at the school as of 31st May. New staff known to be starting in September should be added manually to the bottom of the form, this will include Early Career Teachers about to start their first year of teaching.

Schools should mark a cross (i.e. X) against the name of each member of staff, in the relevant column for the programme for which they are to be enrolled. This is not required for certain programmes. Where this is the case, it is highlighted with the programme information and these programmes do not appear in the participant enrolment form.
When completing the enrolment form, Senior Leaders should first read the programme information below and review the Star Ambitions attendance dashboard as this provides information on staff participation in programmes for 2020-21 and 2021-22 (see next section). Senior Leaders should pay particular attention to the statutory and mandatory training and ensure relevant staff are enrolled to ensure compliance.
Once enrolments have been received, Star Institute will send outlook calendar invites and enrolment instructions, including Zoom registration links, to named participants. Where training is delivered multiple times, participants will be allocated a date but will be able to change if capacity allows.
School attendance dashboards
To support leaders in maintaining their school professional development records and managing staff participation in training, Principals have access to information on the attendance of staff nominated by them to participate in Star Ambitions programmes or events. Attendance data can be accessed via Power BI by Principals and nominated staff as per school data dashboards. The dashboard can be accessed at any time by clicking here.
Where participants attend for 75% or more of a session the dashboard will show them as having attended. Below 75% will be shown as ‘nonattendance’. Whilst partial attendance will not appear in the dashboard, Star Institute can provide this detail upon request.
Star Institute makes every effort to ensure the attendance tracker is accurate and schools are asked to inform Star Institute of participants that:
• Leave or withdraw from a programme
• Are on long term sickness
• Are new staff that should be added to programmes, particularly for statutory and mandatory training.
Making participant changes
Changes to registered participants, adding or removing can be made by completing the Star Ambitions Change Request form. Please provide as much notice as possible to enable changes to be made.

EARLY CAREERS FRAMEWORK
EARLY
Programmes information
The Early Careers Framework (ECF) programme is a fully-funded, two year package of structured training and guidance for Early Career Teachers (ECTs). The ECF programme is at the heart of the DfEs teacher recruitment and retention strategy to transform the support teachers get at the beginning of their careers. It is linked to the best available research, ensuring ECTs have the dedicated time needed to focus on development.
Our ECF programme is delivered through a mix of face-toface and online modules and is structured in a way that will help Early Career Teachers (ECTs) integrate theory, practice and feedback.
Each module includes self-directed study materials containing expert guidance, research and examples of best practice. Programme members will join online training sessions to discuss theory and their own experiences with small groups of peers and experts.
YEAR 1
Rooted in research and expertise and backed by a range of tailored resources, year one of the programme consists of the following six modules, one per half-term:
1. How can you create an effective learning environment?
2. How do pupils learn?
3. What makes classroom practice effective?
4. How can you use assessment and feedback to greatest effect?
5. How can you support all pupils to succeed?
6. How can you design a coherent curriculum?
YEAR 2
Year two takes a more personal approach focused on subject/phase-specific learning and development, following these six development cycles, one per half-term:
1. Developing pupils' intrinsic motivation
2. Supporting pupils to develop subject-specific skills 3. Using meaningful & memorable explanations 4. Anticipating & addressing common misconceptions 5. Developing pupils’ literacy skills 6. Developing a coherent curriculum.

LEADERSHIP
Programmes information
Instructional coaching is the bedrock of professional development at Star. The successful implementation of the ‘Teach Like A Star’ strategy is dependent on Senior and Middle Leaders being effective instructional coaches.
The Instructional Coaching for Middle & Senior Leaders programme will focus on the key principles around Instructional Coaching:
• Develop the teacher, rather than evaluate his/her practice
• Help determine the weekly action step ensuring it is observable, practised, highest leverage and bitesized enough for the teacher to accomplish it in one week
• Use practice clinics; these can be whole-school and/ or departmental/subject-specific. Practice clinics provide opportunities for coaches to use the ‘See it, Name it, Do it’ model to exemplify the action step and how best to implement it

• Practise the action step when working with the teacher
• See it in action in the classroom.

It is important that participants commit to attending all five sessions when enrolling onto the programme.

Star Apprenticeships are designed to upskill, develop and enhance the Star Academies workforce. They are work-based training programmes completed using evidence from a learner’s current job role. The programmes are available for existing employees as well as those who are recruited as apprentices.
All training is paid from Star Academies’ Apprenticeship Levy so the only cost to schools is the salary for a new recruit and the release time to complete the programme.
Star Academies works with a range of providers to deliver our apprenticeship qualifications, with the exception of the Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship, which will be delivered by Star Teachers.
Programme delivery is flexible and tailored to meet the needs of individual learners and schools. Delivery is usually through one to one, remote sessions with skills coaches. Remote sessions will take place every 2-4 weeks and will be approximately 45 minutes in duration. These sessions may be supported by full or half day workshops at set intervals throughout the course.
The programmes currently on offer in Star Academies are listed below:
There are three windows a year for apprenticeship programme expressions of interest. This is done by a single return submitted by the school to Star Institute.

KEY SUBMISSION DATES
You must submit one expression of interest form per school before the following dates: 31st October 31st January 30th April
Requests for apprenticeship training should happen during the application window. However, some ad-hoc activity outside the window may be supported in exceptional circumstances. Establishments should contact Star Institute in the first instance.

• Check internet connectivity - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027616/windows-checkyour-network-connection-status
• Test audio device - https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362283-Testing-computer-ordevice-audio
Where participants have not previously used the device they will access the training on, they should check that Zoom works properly in advance and seek IT support if necessary.
Please ensure you pre-check access to any links or sites provided to you before the session and inform your school technician of any issues in order that any configuration or changes can be made to systems, firewalls or the web filter. Star Institute is not able to help with this.
3 Prepare well!
Online training is as important as face-to-face professional development.
• Set aside appropriate time in order to access and complete required pre-reading and/or tasks
• Have these open and ready or relevant links accessible, at the start of the session
• Make sure the ‘learning space’ in your classroom or home is as free from distraction as possible for the duration of the session
• Make it easier to focus on the training by muting your phone, turning off notifications and closing or minimising running apps. This will help to reduce your internet’s bandwidth capacity.
4 Professional expectations
These apply to online training, just as they do for face-to-face training, including:
• Punctuality and attendance
• Dress code (formal or casual professional)
• Communications and interactions
• Self-presentation: seated upright, at a table if necessary to engage in tasks or note taking. Avoid multi-tasking: you'll retain the discussion better if you refrain from replying to emails or text messages during the training and wait to work on that PowerPoint presentation for tomorrow until after the session ends!
5 Make sure we know you are present
Please ensure your name is correct on screen once you have signed into the online session. You can right-click on your name and use the ‘rename’ function to edit your profile name.
If you join as a school group, the lead person signed into the session must ensure the name of the school and those participating is reflected in the profile name. If the group is too large to make this practical, the zoom name should reflect the school initials and number of people participating in the group and the names of those participating should be added to the ‘Group attendance form’ which can be accessed via the QR code on the presenters’ slides or via the link posted in chat by the facilitator /Zoom facilitator. This will support effective session management and assist us to improve the tracking of participants’ attendance at training events. Failure to complete the ‘Group attendance form’ will result in inaccurate staff attendance published in your schools’ PowerBi attendance dashboard.
6 Engage in the session
Just as with face-to-face training, effective online learning will involve interactions and discussions with the trainer (when invited) and with each other, for example within breakout rooms. Therefore, cameras should be switched on throughout a training session and mics turned on when discussion is requested so that colleagues can learn together and a high-quality learning community is established.
There may be a small number of instances where exceptional circumstances make this protocol difficult to observe. As a courtesy, participants should raise this with the programme or training contact at Star Institute in advance, so that the facilitator or trainer can be informed.
Participants who have joined the session but are not at their computers participating will be moved to the waiting room as it impacts the quality of discussions in breakouts. If participants are unavailable to be at their computers for a genuine reason (i.e. a technical issue etc), participants are given an opportunity to contact the facilitator via chat or email to ensure they are not removed unnecessarily.
