STAR TALENT ACADEMY
FOREWORD
Careers in education - whether in leadership, teaching or support roles - can be highly demanding and exceptionally rewarding. We want every Star colleague to be passionate about their job, receive first-class support and training to enable them to perform their role to their highest potential, and have access to a wealth of career progression opportunities.
Only by nurturing and retaining the highest calibre employees will we achieve our vision and priorities around transforming the educational attainment and elevating the life chances of the young people in our schools – to help them succeed at the highest levels of education, employment and the professions.
Our new Star Talent Strategy places a renewed focus on the skills, capabilities, and aspirations of our people – spanning teaching, leadership and support roles, from early career teachers to executive leaders.
Your professional development and growth are key to our future success and are at the nucleus of our strategy. We want you to grow with us.
Plans are underway to establish the Star Talent Academy. At its centre will be a comprehensive, personalised digital platform created exclusively to serve all Star employees. The hub, which will be developed in phases over the next few years, will enable you to plan, record and monitor your own professional growth, plot your personal career pathway, identify opportunities for career progression, and access Star’s best in class professional development programme.
The phased introduction of the Star Talent Academy will begin – from September 2024 onwards –with the delivery of all internal professional development opportunities, formerly our Star Ambitions programme.
This brochure sets out the Star Talent Academy programme for 2024-25 and provides guidance on accessing our training and development opportunities for the year ahead. The introduction explains the structure of the Star Talent Academy, including the four delivery mechanisms that we will establish to provide a first-class platform to boost your professional growth, accelerate your progression and, ultimately, deliver the best possible outcomes for our children and young people.
Through the introduction of the Star Talent Academy, we aim to establish a pioneering eco-system where every colleague is nurtured to grow and progress. Our ambition for our people is boundless - we want you to shine like a Star.

DEVELOPMENTAL TRAINING where attendance is optional and at the discretion of the Principal or Headteacher.
Star Talent Academy Faculties
Professional development programmes and training for 2024-25 have been listed under the relevant Talent Academy faculty. When programmes or training spans two or more faculties it is included under the faculty that logically aligns with other professional development.
FACULTY OF TEACHING
FACULTY OF LEADERSHIP
FACULTY OF OPERATIONS

Enabling Star leaders, in both educational and support roles and from aspiring to Executive, to continuously learn, grow and perform beyond outstanding.
Securing the effective management at school and trust levels, including the implementation of regulatory policies, procedures and practices. Also, the development of role specific knowledge, skills and competencies in education and support roles which fall outside the Faculty of Teaching.
The Talent Academy will focus development across these three branches of expertise ensuring that moving forward there is something for everyone.

COACHING HUB
school-based instructional coaching
Star in a Box is all online, asynchronous training and resources that can be completed at anytime and anyplace. From 2025 this will be a single platform for all Star’s remote, asynchronous learning provision and its common and consistent signposting will enable any employee to take ownership of their professional development by quickly and easily navigating to the most relevant learning resources for them.
Content will include:
Existing online training created ‘in house’ or mandatory eLearning or third-party training endorsed by Star.
Archived recordings from Star Ambitions back-catalogue that will, in time, be repurposed and narrated.
Repurposed existing training materials and resources.
New asynchronous professional development programmes that will be developed for release in September 2025.
Signposting to external research and professional development resources.
Star in a Box Star Ambitions
Star Ambitions is Star Academies' annually published programme of online and in-person ‘live’ sessions that are exclusively for Star employees.
It also includes bespoke, ‘on demand’ training delivered by Star Central staff to employees new to lead roles (for example: Attendance Officers, Education Visits Coordinators) or as part of the trust’s onboarding training for employees in new schools joining the trust and training mandated by Star Academies but delivered by leaders in their own school.
From 2025 where programmes are statutory or mandatory, employee enrolment and communications will be automated, enabling them and their managers to view all their training requirements and progress towards completion. With their managers’ digital consent, employees will be able to enrol on developmental programmes informed by audits of role specific competencies, their professional growth goals and their career pathway aspirations.
Coaching Hub
The Coaching Hub will focus both on providing professional development and support for designated mentors, coaches and instructional coaches in schools as well as being the portal, for all staff, into their coaching platform, for example StepLab for teaching staff.
The key purposes of the Coaching Hub are:
to reinforce initial ‘up-front’ training with expert follow-on support within school.
to develop and sustain a network of highly skilled school-based mentors and coaches.
to enable peer-to-peer collaboration amongst mentors and coaches.
to ensure employees access professional development which includes the benefits of interacting with experts (e.g. in teaching, in leadership, in coaching etc.) who can respond to questions, identify and address misconceptions and provide personalised feedback and guidance.
The Hub will, in time, support a range of coaching approaches, in addition to Instructional Coaching. For example, leadership coaching and other role specific coaching (i.e. for support staff) to ensure all employees have access to coaching to support their professional growth throughout their careers.
Star Endorse
Star Endorse is the umbrella for all programmes leading to a qualification and for designations awarded to employees working at Star Excellence who provide professional development support to colleagues in their own and other schools. All aspects of Star Endorse are developmental (i.e. not statutory or mandatory).
For 2024-25 it includes Apprenticeship programmes and National Professional Qualifications provided by the National Institute of Teaching (NIoT). For 2025 it will include Star and NIoT Excellence Fellows and will be accompanied by strong FastTrack FT messaging. The designation of both Star and NIoT Excellence Fellows will form an important talent management pipeline enabling outstanding teachers and leaders with additional career progression routes beyond their own school.
How to register staff onto programmes and training
Senior Leaders should register participants onto programmes by completing the participant enrolment spreadsheet (sent to schools with this programme) and returning it to Star Talent Academy by Friday 12 July 2024.
The spreadsheet has been pre-populated with the names of all staff currently employed at the school as appearing on school level training spreadsheets on 1 June 2024. New staff known to be starting in September should be added manually to the bottom of the spreadsheet.
Schools should mark a cross (i.e. X) against the name of each member of staff, in the relevant column for the programme for which they are to be enrolled. This is not required for certain programmes. Where this is the case, it is highlighted next to the programme and in the ‘at a glance table and these programmes do not appear in the participant enrolment spreadsheet.
When completing the enrolment spreadsheet, Senior Leaders should review school training attendance dashboards as this provides information on staff participation in programmes between September 2020 and July 2024 (see next section). Senior Leaders should pay particular attention to the statutory and mandatory training and ensure relevant staff are enrolled to ensure compliance.
Once enrolments have been received, Star Talent Academy will send participants Outlook calendar invites which will include Zoom or MS Teams session links. Senior Leaders should ensure they have informed staff that they have been enrolled on training programmes.

Schools' responsibility for monitoring attendance and maintaining professional development records
Schools are responsible for ensuring they have effective procedures in place to ensure up to date training records are maintained.
All schools are required to:
• Maintain training records Schools must maintain up to date training records for all staff (or have access to up-to-date training records e.g. where training is completed online).
• Track and monitor completion rates Schools must track and monitor completion rates for all staff training.
• Have an effective training follow-up procedure. Schools must ensure that staff catch up with any missed training and that there is a procedure in place to track and monitor attendance /completion. Schools are strongly encouraged to have a named person responsible for tracking and monitoring training completion and organising and tracking any catch-up training.
To support leaders in maintaining their school professional development records and managing staff participation in training, Principals have access to information on staff attendance and completion of centrally delivered professional development. Principals and other nominated senior leaders can access training attendance information via Power BI alongside school data dashboards. The dashboard can be accessed at any time by clicking here
Where participants attend an online session for 75% or more, the dashboard will indicate them as having attended. Attendance below 75% will be indicated as ‘non-attendance’. Whilst partial attendance’ will not appear in the dashboard, Star Talent Academy can provide this detail upon request.
Star Talent Academy makes every effort to ensure the attendance tracker is accurate and schools are asked to inform Star Talent Academy of participants that:
• leave or withdraw from a programme.
• are on long-term sickness.
• are new staff that should be added to programmes, particularly for statutory and mandatory training.
Making changes to training or programme participants
Changes to registered participants, adding or removing can be made by emailing startalentacademy@ staracademies.org Please provide as much notice as possible to enable changes to be made.
Online professional development protocols
In order to enhance professional learning and create vibrant and productive learning communities, all participants are asked to comply with Star Talent Academy’s online protocols.

Technical Pre-Checks: Participants should verify IT equipment, connectivity, and links, ensuring that video and microphones function properly.
Preparation: Approach online learning with the same diligence as face-to-face training.
Professional Behaviour: Maintain punctuality, attendance, and appropriate dress code during sessions.
Effective Communication: Engage in discussions with cameras on and microphones unmuted.
Accurate Screen Names: Use screen names that reflect participants’ identities, especially when joining as a group.
Group Participation: If required, rename participants during sessions, and inform Star Talent Academy when groups join from a single login by completing the Group Attendance Form

The programme begins on 9 July 2025 with the ‘Flying Start’, preparing the trainees for what’s to come and enabling the trainees to spend 1 day (10 July) in their placement school. The cohort reconvenes on 26 August 2025 for a week of Intensive Training and Practice, focused on behaviour, before starting placement on 1 September 2025. Trainees spend all year in one school, except for a contrasting placement of 4-6 weeks in the spring term. Trainees complete the ITT programme on the last day of their placement school's summer term.
Training takes place every Thursday and is delivered in person across 6 regional hubs and online. Mentors are trained in the ITT curriculum and in the science of mentoring across the training year.
The NIoT offers three different routes into its ITT programme.
1. Fee-paying trainee – no salary
Trainees following this route pay course fees of £9,535 for full-time study, or £7,145 per year for part-time study. Tax free bursaries or scholarships are available for many subjects. Trainees may also be able to access finance and maintenance loans. The school does not need to cover the cost of any fees or salaries. You will have access to an unsalaried trainee teacher on a high-quality programme with expert support. Your trainee will build up their teaching timetable from 30% to 80% by the end of the programme.
2. Salaried trainee
Professionals with a good degree and three or more years’ experience in industry or education might be eligible for a salaried route into teaching. A school must pay the trainee a salary and oncosts plus the NIoT for the training fees. Trainees are appointed full time on the unqualified teacher scale. Schools receive a grant to cover most of the salary for most subjects. Salaried trainees are able to teach a 50% timetable from day 1, increasing to 80% and are typically appointed on 2-year contract to help build capacity within your school.
3. Postgraduate teaching apprentice
Benefits of hosting a trainee
• System leadership - help develop highly-effective qualified teachers for your school and the wider school system
• Enhanced capacity - trainees in all routes are in school Monday-Wednesday and Friday* all year except for a six-week contrasting placement in Spring 1 half term
• Quality training - trainees receive high-quality, evidence informed central training each Thursday
• Future proofing - our ITT Curriculum is sequenced for seamless transition to the ECF
• Support - schools receive dedicated support from the ITT team
• Staff development - ITT mentors receive mentor training to further develop their leadership capacity
• Recruitment - hosting ITTs provides an opportunity to secure teachers to meet your future workforce needs.

*part-time routes are available. Part-time trainees may be in school 2 or 3 days a week.

Supporting trainees
To ensure trainees succeed, schools must commit to:
• providing a subject/phase mentor who will:
• observe the trainee teach at least once per week
• attend termly reviews
A teaching apprentice is typically already employed in a school and looking to gain QTS. Apprentices teach a 60% timetable (of the 4 days) from day 1. Training fees are covered by the apprenticeship levy. DfE grant funding can be used to cover salary costs for some subjects – the apprentices receive a UQT1 salary, paid for by the school if no bursary available.
• lead a mentor meeting once per week and provide coaching
• complete mentor training throughout the year.
• providing each mentor with at least 1.5 hours of protected time per week on their timetable for mentoring (this can include the time gained back from the trainee covering one of their classes)
• ensuring the mentor attends 20 hours of training across the year – some of which will be delivered in person by the tutors during trainee visits

• designating a Managing Mentor (usually a member of SLT who leads on ECF/ITT) who will take responsibility for supporting mentors.

Securing a trainee
Star expectations
All Star ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ schools are required to host at least one trainee per form of entry. For example, a four-form entry school should accept a minimum of four trainees. The choice of subjects is at the school’s discretion.
Identifying suitable ITT trainees
Postgraduate teaching apprentices
Schools should consider if there are members of staff within the school seeking to train as a teacher via the postgraduate teaching apprentice route. This may be a teaching assistant, cover supervisor, support worker or technician. As long as they have a degree, they could be eligible. If you have a suitable candidate please complete the Star Apprenticeship Programme Request form Once funding is approved by Star Talent Academy, schools should complete the NIoT’s PGTA Employer Nomination form.
Fee-paying trainees and salaried trainees
Preferred placements
All fee-paying and salaried ITT trainees must state a preferred placement school as part of their initial application to the NIoT. If a trainee has listed your school in their application, a representative of the school will be invited to join the ITT interview panel. Where a training offer is made, your school will then have first refusal of that trainee. Schools will have two weeks to consider the trainee’s placement request. If you do not have capacity to support a trainee in that subject/phase, the trainee will become available for other schools in the partnership to request. Their details will be added to a live database for all schools to access and consider (see below).
ITT Trainees 2025-26 database
Our ITT Trainees 2025-26 database provides a list of all ITT trainees ready to be matched to a placement school.
NIoT contact details
Schools who have not been identified as a preferred placement and those with additional placements to offer should review the ITT trainees available. If there are trainees you would like to secure for your school, you should email their name and subject specialism to g.wharton@niot.org. uk The NIoT will work with you and the trainees to agree the placement.
The NIoT accepts applications on a rolling basis until July 2025. Every Friday new trainees will be added to the database. Keep checking the database for a trainee that fits your requirements. All matched trainees will be removed from the database.

PRIMARY CURRICULUM MASTERCLASSES
PRIMARY CURRICULUM EXCELLENCE MASTERCLASSES
Programmes information
Star have developed a programme of primary curriculum excellence masterclasses for leaders and teachers in Star primary schools.
This professional development series will continue to be presented by subject experts with national track records of success. They understand the pressures and joys of teaching and offer practical strategies, rooted in credible evidence in their specific areas of expertise, for deepening teachers’ knowledge. The masterclass programme spans the academic year and has been arranged to be manageable for busy leaders and teachers.
All sessions will be delivered online as 1-hour twilights with a more flexible attendance model. For 24/25, Principals are able to select masterclasses for different individual teachers or groups, according to their need. Mandated requirements, restrictions and guidance regarding this flexible approach are as follows:
• All teachers must attend masterclasses for at least three subjects (but can attend more if this is agreed between the teacher and school).
• Subject leads must attend the masterclasses for their subject (if applicable). This should be included in their quota of three subjects as per above.
• Teachers new to the Trust and ECTs must attend the Reading, Writing and Maths masterclasses.
• The Trust may mandate that all teachers attend specific masterclasses due to specific Trust priorities or identified CPD requirements. This should be included in teachers’ quotas of three subjects as per above.
• Schools may also mandate that their teachers attend masterclasses for certain subjects according to school priorities or needs of teachers – e.g. Ofsted deep dive subject requires development; identified whole school priority subject; specific teacher not yet proficient etc.
Full details including presenters and session topics will be made available in the autumn term.
Target group ECTs, Teachers and Subject Leads. For ECTs - Principals should liaise with the ECT's mentor and enrol them on sessions where there are areas for development.

SECONDARY CURRICULUM EXCELLENCE MASTERCLASSES
Programmes information
Star have developed a programme of secondary curriculum excellence masterclasses for leaders and teachers in Star secondary schools.
This professional development series will be presented by subject experts with a track record of success. They will offer practical strategies to improve the curriculum and secure outcomes. The masterclasses will also have input from the Curriculum Excellence Fellow on application of learning, further training to improve outcomes or provide a gap task activity. The masterclass programme will be delivered online as twilights.
For 24/25, the English, Mathematics, Science and Modern Foreign Languages masterclasses will be delivered solely by Star Curriculum Excellence Fellows (CEF).
In addition, two masterclasses will be held in the autumn term, and one will be held in the spring term. This will alleviate the requirement to attend evening twilights during exam season. Senior leaders are not required to attend the masterclasses but should watch recordings for their lesson afterwards. ECTs with a mandatory ECT-related evening commitment that week are not required to attend the curriculum masterclass but must watch the recording afterwards.

Programme structure and delivery varies between programmes but, in the majority of cases, delivery is flexible and tailored to meet the needs of individual learners and schools.
