MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION Dear School Families, The school year is racing by and we find ourselves already at the mid–point of the 1stquarter. Fall is almost here and the holidays will be here before we know it.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Room Parent Meeting and Fund for St. Anthony Kick-off!

Our discipleship message for the week is about the words we choose to use. The saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," just isn't true. Words can leave wounds that may never heal.

The world we live in praises people who say clever things even if they embarrass and hurt others. But that is not the kind of person we are called to be as Disciples of Christ. Ephesians 4:29 says "When you talk, do not say harmful things. But say what people need–words that will help others become stronger. Then what you say will help those who listen to you." Jesus tells us that words are powerful tools. He wants us to use them to build up those around us, not tear them down. To help remind all of us of how important our words are, we are introducing "T.H.I.N.K." Before we speak, text or email we should THINK about the words we choose.

Are they True? Are they Helpful? Are they Inspiring? Are they Necessary? Are they Kind?

We have THINK posters around campus to remind us just how important our words are. If we all THINK before we speak we will be living our lives as Christ did, doing everything in love.

The first "Talks with Fr. Tom" is on September 21st. This month’s topic is How to Know, Love & Serve the Lord. We wish you all a great week!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How does STAOPCS conduct conferences?

Formal Conferences are held twice a year at the end of first and third quarters. The conferences are meant to be positive and include input from parents, students and teachers. These conferences are required by the Archdiocese and must be attended by a parent and the student. Fall conferences are being held on October 20th and 21st.

How do I register for Fall Conferences?

Registration for Fall Conferences is done through PTC Wizard (http://staopcs.ptcwizard.com).

Registration will open on October 6th. Parents may set–up a log–in and password before registration opens.

PARENTS: FORMS ARE PAST DUE! PARENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REGISTER FOR FALL CONFERENCES IF FORMS ARE NOT COMPLETED. All Back–To–School forms should be completed as soon as possible! Forms are in ParentsWeb© under School Information>Web Forms>SAOPCS Back To School Forms:        

NURSE’S NOTES

ParentsWeb has been a great addition to our school community. It has served as one more tool to help keep you informed of your child’s education.

In the Classroom:

Based on the response we received from our teachers and parents regarding the teacher gradebooks being viewable on ParentsWeb, we have decided to make them accessible on a regular basis starting Monday, September 19. Your child’s grades will be available on your secure login site under the Student Information tab. However, around progress report and report card time the grade tab will not be accessible due to preparation of the reports being sent to you electronically.

K2: Reported case of strep, 9/15/16 Please continue to stress cover and cough and the importance of hand washing with your children.

Inform Mrs. Pavlock of any reportable illness’ (i.e. strep throat, conjunctivitis, lice, mono), so that she can relay this information each week in The Messenger. You can call or email Mrs. Leslie Pavlock at 832–482– 4167.

Your child’s success is of great importance to us, and keeping you informed only makes the partnership between school and home that much stronger. If you have any concerns with your account, please contact Amy Leslie.

Grade Level Competition!

Our first competition of the year will be grade level vs. grade level. Let’s see who can bring in the most box tops! Winners will receive a free dress day!      

EARLY CHILDHOOD/ELEMENTARY NEWS

This year we will be offering the Jr. Master Gardening Program for Kindergarten through 5th grade. We will not have an outside garden this year but will focus on container gardening.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The program Learn, Grow, Eat and Go is about growing good kids through Interdisciplinary elements of nutrition, garden science, physical activity, and fresh vegetable tasting to improve the health and wellness of children, family and the school community.

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will meet on the first Thursday of the month at 3:45 p.m.—5:15 p.m.

Grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th will meet on the third Thursday of the month at 3:45—5:15 p.m.

If your child is interested in joining our Junior Master Gardener program please fill out the permission form in the Resources Folder on ParentsWeb and return it to school by Monday, Sept. 26th, 2016.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER BY JANAY O’CONNOR Bullying has always been a part of our society, but with advances in technology today bullying can happen anywhere, anytime. A bully’s hurtful comments or actions can hit just as hard through a cell phone at home, as it does in the parking lot at school. Whether it’s cyber–bullying or a face–to–face confrontation, the pain, embarrassment and humiliation brought on by a bully can wreak havoc on the life of the victim.

To help students navigate through these difficult times they will have the opportunity to see an amazing, live, anti–bullying program called Empowered To Defend. The program informs students how they can overcome the words and actions of bullies by teaching them the one proven way to stop bullying. The program will illustrate through riveting, true stories the affects bullying has on its victims and will empower students to defend those being bullied.

Parents will have the opportunity to preview the student program as well as receive tips on how to discuss bullying and its affects with their children.

Empowered To Defend is presented by Aim For Success, Inc. which has educated over two million teens, parents and educators across America during the past 18 years with their motivational presentations.

All Parents are encouraged to attend the Parent Program!

Location: Adult Meeting Room(AMR) Date: September 29, 2016 Time: 6:00pm The Parent Program will provide a preview of the student program, which will be held on Friday, September 30th, and equip you with creative ideas to help your child deal with and prevent bullying.
