MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION Dear School Families, Thank you to all of grandparents and special friends for being with us for our First Annual Grandparents day on Wednesday. We enjoyed meeting so many members of our extended school family and having them with us. Our Spring Book Fair continues through Friday in the Fellowship Hall. Spring Conferences begin after our early dismissal on Thursday afternoon with Spring Break starting for families once conferences are over. Our staff begins their Spring Break after Staff Development on Friday. We're all looking forward to a week of rest and relaxation, or for many, travel.

Our Discipleship Message for the week focuses on the meaning of Lent. Jesus said to us in the Gospel of Matthew that “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” We can’t love someone we don’t know. If we want to love God, we need to meet Him and spend time with Him. How can we do that as we continue our Lenten journey? We can start by listening to God’s words from scripture. We can talk to Him in the freedom and quiet of our hearts. We can also receive the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation where we meet Him in the person of Jesus Christ. These are great ways to grow closer to our God and get to know Him during this Lenten season.

We’re happy to publish our 2017-2018 School Calendar as part of this Messenger. It is also now on our webpage. There are a few things we want to point out on the calendar that are different from this year: 

Noon Dismissal – The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department (TCCBED) now requires schools to be in session for at least four (4) hours in a day in order to count it in the instructional calendar. Our first and last days of school along with conference days will be noon dismissals so that they can be counted as part of our 180 required days. Lunch will not be served on these days.



Conference Days – With the TCCBED change above we will now have classes until noon on both Thursday and Friday Conference Days in the fall and spring. Conferences on Thursdays will be from 1:00-5:30 pm and on Fridays from 1:00-3:30 pm. Fridays are no longer a day off from school for students. Please keep this in mind as you plan your calendars for next year.



“Beyond the Bell” is the new name for our Before & After School Program. BAASP was not the catchiest name so we’ve come up with something new and different.

Good luck to our 8th grade students who are anxiously awaiting acceptance letters from Catholic and private high schools over Spring Break. We are still accepting applications for our Pre-K3, PreK-4, 1st, 2nd and 6th grades for '17-'18, so spread the word. We hope that you all enjoy Spring Break next week. When we return, it will be a rush to summer. We wish everyone a blessed Lenten journey.

ALL-SCHOOL NEWS TESTING INFORMATION

PARENT MEETING

During the weeks of March 27-31 and April 3-7, students in first through eighth grades will be taking the IOWA Assessments as well as students in first through seventh grades will be taking the CogAT. We will not be testing on Monday or Wednesday the first week and the second week we will not be testing on Wednesday or Friday. We are using these days to review skills and concepts for the subtests and administer make-up tests.

Please make sure your child is in school and on time on testing days. They need to be here by 8:00 and students coming in after this time will need to come back at 10:30. We do not want to disrupt the testing environment for our students.

Please do not schedule any dentists or doctor appointments on these days. It is important that you child is in attendance.

We have delved into STREAM at SAOPCS. Do you know what it stands for? Do your know how teachers are implementing this into the classroom. An introduction into STREAM and why we have implemented this at our school will be presented.

LENT AT STAOPCS STATIONS OF THE CROSS MARCH 24, 2017 | 7 P.M. Join other school families to lead the Stations of the Cross on March 24th. You will receive a booklet with your assigned reading ahead of time to practice. The Stations of the Cross take us through the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, and provide a meaningful experience for the family to take part in during Lent. You may divide the reading among your children or part of the reading may be read by the parents. Click to sign-up!

3RD QUARTER STEWARDSHIP PROJECT This year at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School we continue to focus together on our patron saint’s charisms. We hope that you have noticed this throughout the year. Most recently, the charisms were central to our Catholic Schools Week activities. We are excited to continue to learn about charisms and to discern, or begin to understand, the charisms that resonate strongly with each one of us. For our Third Quarter Stewardship Project we invite our students, families, and staff to practice charisms.

Please review the instructions sent home in green folders on Feb. 24th. Completed slips can be sent in at anytime and given to homeroom teachers.

Charisms will be collected through Friday, March 24, 2017, the day of SAOPCS Stations of the Cross in the Church at 7pm. All collected slips of paper will be burned together in the parish Easter fire. These papers will be a collective prayer offering from our school.

We hope this will be a unique way to encourage our students to learn more about charisms and enkindle in them a heart of service. Please do not hesitate to contact the Nestor Cayanan, Religion Coordinator, or Ashley Knopp, Assistant Religion Coordinator, with any questions or concerns. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Don Hoyt Memorial Middle School Scholarship 2017 Value: 1st Place - $3,000, 2nd Place - $2,000 Provided By: MGM Foundation, Inc. Don Hoyt used his God-given talents to make the world around him a better place. This scholarship is open to current 5th, 6th, or 7th grade students re-entering St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School in the fall of 2017.

Deacon Mike Mims Memorial Family Scholarship 2017 Value: 1st Place - $3,000, 2nd Place - $2,000 Provided By: Deacon Mike Mims Memorial Golf Tournament & St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School Deacon Mike Mims was constantly growing in his faith. His missionary spirit was seen in every aspect of his life. If only one word could describe him it would be, “go”! How does your family reflect this spirit of “go”?
