Independent Research Process What: The Independent Research course is a course required for graduation. The Independent Research option is available to all high school students who would like to pursue a sustained line of inquiry on a topic that they are interested, curious, or passionate about with the guidance of a faculty mentor. The Independent Research project has 4 phases, which are broken down below: Phase 1: Explore and Reflect Phase 3: Create and Reflect -Task Definition -Synthesis -Information Seeking Strategies -Creation -Locate and Access -Evaluation -Use of Information -Reflection Phase 2: Research, Process, and Reflect Phase 4: Share and Reflect -Central Question Generation -Presentation -Analysis -Reflection -Reflection Why: It is clear that we must prepare our students to develop core academic and critical life skills that will help them navigate a fast-paced, ever-changing, complex and interconnected world successfully. Independent Research helps students become engaged in a sustained, iterative process of inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, self-reflection, and creation by investigating an independent research project that focuses on a student-generated central question. Students will engage in decision-making throughout the process by effectively framing a focused research question; locating, obtaining, and evaluating information for analysis and synthesis; critically analyzing and evaluating arguments, evidence, and claims; making connections and inferences among disparate pieces of information; identifying further lines of questions to research in pursuit of answering their central research question; and drawing well-reasoned conclusions based on their research. They will be able to exercise their creativity by developing a polished, well-designed product that the student can feel proud to share with a wider audience. Moreover, students will be able to develop their oral presentation skills as they present their projects and field questions in a professional manner. Finally, students will have the benefit of gaining critical life skills such as time management, self-advocacy, collaboration, flexibility, adaptability, and resilience, all critical to managing a sustained, long-term, and academically rigorous independent project.
