A Message from the Head Master The foresight of the Jesuits and their aspiration “to afford a Religious, Literary and Commercial Education” to the Catholic population of Glasgow in 1859 has shaped a unique school, and generations of Old Aloysians have thrived in the professions of Medicine, Business, Engineering, Finance, Science, Technology and the Humanities.

In August 2011, St Aloysius’ College was established as a separate Charity, responsible for its own financial future. Having held private discussions with members of the OA Community, we are aiming to raise £3,000,000 - through lifetime and legacy donations - to both preserve our distinctive education and to increase the number of Bursary places at St Aloysius’ College available to families of modest means.

An example of this type of gift in action came in 2017 from a former parent who left instructions to set up a Bursary which is supporting one student throughout her time at Senior School. Gifts such as this will help to transform the lives of the next generation of young people who show early promise - like Stephanie McGill, Class of 2012 - who tells us how a Bursary enriched her life.

As an Old Aloysian and former pupil of Scotland’s only Jesuit School, you are part of a tradition and institution creating “men and women for others” who can make a difference as leaders in your chosen fields and through serving your communities.

Stephanie McGill (2012) Crime Scene Investigator

Behind every Bursary, there is a story, and Stephanie McGill from the Class of 2012 shares hers here:

A Surprise Gift for Stephanie An unusual surprise present for Stephanie’s 11th birthday from her mum, was a morning at St Aloysius’ College sitting the Entrance Exam! In a way, it’s a gift that has kept on giving, as attending the College is where Stephanie developed her love of science, leading her to become a Crime Scene Investigator today.

Stephanie’s Primary School Headmistress had spotted her ability and potential, and suggested to her mum to apply for a means-tested Bursary.

Stephanie knew nothing of this “surprise”, nor anything about a Bursary. Nevertheless, from Day One, Stephanie’s time at the College changed her life.

“My Primary School Headmistress opened the door to St Aloysius’ College for me. Her sons attended the College and she suggested to my mum that St Aloysius’ would be the right environment for me. She definitely wasn’t wrong.

From the moment I entered my first-ever science class, I knew this was what I wanted to do. Broad minded, but I have managed to narrow it down considerably since then.

In my experience, the school is different to any other; where academia and sportsmanship are praised alongside each other. Where being great at one thing doesn’t define you, but you are allowed to explore your talents and personal drivers.

By embodying charity at its heart, it teaches pupils how to deal with life’s hardships with compassion, and blessings with gratitude.

The dedication and support that the teachers provide allow the school to be a nurturing and learning environment, even when it is high pressure. It is this balance that allows a community ethos to grow. And it is this support that made me love St Aloysius’ so much.

I can’t say how my life would have turned out if I hadn’t been lucky enough to receive a Bursary, but I am certainly glad that I did.”

The Impact a Gift in Your Will Can Make Faith and values can live on through a gift in your Will to St Aloysius’ College. Legacies of all sizes are important to the College and will be invested in St Aloysius’ College’s Endowment Fund, the capital of which remains unspent. As such, the value will be preserved for future generations.

• A gift in your Will could help to open up more opportunities and transform the lives of exceptional pupils, whose families could never afford an independent education, letting them flourish.

• A gift in your Will could help to improve facilities in the College in future.

The Importance of Inheritance Tax Under current legislation in the UK, the threshold for Inheritance Tax is £325,000 of an estate at September 2020.

The standard Inheritance Tax rate is 40%. It is only charged on the part of your estate that’s above the threshold.

If you leave a gift in your Will to St Aloysius’ College, which is a registered charity, in most cases your donation will be tax-free and can reduce the Inheritance Tax on your estate.

Your donation will either be deducted from the value of your estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated, or reduce your Inheritance Tax rate if 10% or more of your estate is left to charity.

A Final Act of Thanksgiving Leaving a gift in your Will to be used for the College’s general charitable purposes, will allow the Head Master and Bursar to support a specific need.

In Summer 2020, donations to ‘Where the Need is Greatest’ were diverted to ‘The Hardship Fund’ to help families who were at risk of having to remove their children from the College. It provided stability and reassurance for families facing an uncertain future due to the economic impact of Covid-19.

Pecuniary

Where a specific sum of money (or other asset) is left to St Aloysius’ College.

Residuary

Where a specific share of an estate is left to St Aloysius’ College, usually by stating a percentage or a fraction of the whole.

Indexed

Making Provision for a Surviving Spouse or Relative

Where, to ensure that the value of the Pecuniary Legacy is protected against inflation, it is index linked.

Quite naturally, many people are concerned that there is enough capital left in their estate to support their surviving spouse or relative.

This can be ensured by both spouses agreeing to make due mention in their Will or Codicil, to the effect that the legacy to St Aloysius’ College is only paid out on the second death.
