WELCOME TO JUNIOR SCHOOL 2025 | 2026
“ Our goal is to help every child grow in confidence, curiosity, and compassion - inspired to give their best in all they do.”
Mrs. Isabelle Erskine Head of Junior School | Senior Depute Principal
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the vibrant and nurturing environment of St Aloysius’ College Junior School. I feel truly privileged to lead such a wonderful school, and it is a joy to be part of a community so rich in purpose and spirit.
In the Junior School, we are proud to provide our pupils with a Catholic education rooted in Ignatian Spirituality. With a strong focus on pastoral care and the development of the whole person, every child is known, supported and valued as an individual.
We are committed to helping each child strive for excellence in all areas, nurturing their intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual growth. Academic achievement is important and we also encourage our pupils to give their best in every aspect of school life - whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or through the many opportunities available for personal development.
Our Junior School is a special place to learn: exploration, creativity and curiosity are encouraged and celebrated. We believe all children can achieve great things when they are inspired and supported to do so.
The breadth and richness of our curriculum reflect this belief - setting high expectations, sparking engagement, and enhancing these vital formative years.
Our dedicated and skilled teachers work hard to create a learning environment where every child has the chance to discover their strengths and develop their unique talents.
Working alongside our pupils and colleagues in the Junior School is a true privilege and we are delighted to welcome you to the Aloysian community.
By choosing St Aloysius’ College, you can expect the highest standard of pastoral care and a first-class education. We provide a strong foundation for every child, encouraging excellence in all areas of life while promoting lifelong learning and spiritual growth. Our staff bring a wealth of pastoral and academic experience, and our relationships are rooted in Jesuit values - inspiring all children to be kind, grateful and to build positive relationships across our community.
We want every child to discover their talents and passions and we offer a wide range of clubs and activities throughout the year to help them explore new interests and find joy in learning beyond the classroom. Celebrating each child’s achievements - both in and out of school - is central to our approach and we value the partnership we share with families in doing so.
We actively encourage pupil voice at all stages, offering meaningful opportunities such as our Rights Respecting Group and Pupil Council to help shape the life of our school.
Grounded in our Jesuit tradition, children of all faiths and none are supported in developing a sense of purpose, an understanding of the world around them and space to grow spiritually in a safe and nurturing environment. .
We warmly invite you to take part in all that our school has to offer and we look forward to building a strong and lasting partnership with you.
“At the heart of our Junior School is a community where every child is supported to grow, explore and thrive - grounded in values that last a lifetime.”
Mrs. Emma Doherty Assistant Head of Junior School
St Aloysius’ College is a part of a Jesuit School network that spans the globe. We are a Catholic community that strives for our young people to be men and women for and with others, and we are open to all.
Our faith is very important to us, particularly in Junior School where our pupils prepare for and receive their Sacraments. This is offered with the guidance of our dedicated teaching staff, along with support from our Jesuit community. We are very fortunate that our children make their Sacraments together in the stunning St Aloysius’ Church.
All of our pupils contribute to daily prayers and we have a special Mass, as a whole school, in St Aloysius’ Church every month. This is a wonderful occasion where parents are welcome to join us in this celebration of our faith. Pupils have opportunities to assist at Mass, join choirs, and to join our various faith-based initiatives, such as the Chaplaincy Group and Mary’s Meals club.
Through our various outreach programmes, we put our faith into action by providing for those who are most disadvantaged in society. From regular charity drives to fundraising events, our pupils always strive to provide for our community and beyond – whether that be offering material support
or their time and prayers. Each child is encouraged to have an active role in outreach and charitable works, inspired by the teachings of our Catholic faith.
At the College, we have built a community where each child is known, respected, and supported from the moment they step into the Green Blazer in Primary 1 to when they are hanging it up at the end of S6. One of the ways we keep our Jesuit mission at the heart of school life is through the inscription AMDG - Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, meaning “For the Greater Glory of God” - on each piece of work. This simple but powerful phrase reminds us that our learning, creativity, and achievements are offered not just for personal success, but in the service of others and the world around us.
Through the lens of our Jesuit Pupil Profile, children are guided not just academically but spiritually and ethically, preparing them to lead lives that are inspired by faith and dedicated to the service of others.

At St Aloysius’ College, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We are fully committed to promoting the wellbeing and protection of all children and young people in our care. We believe it is a shared responsibility - among staff, families, and wider agencies - to ensure that every child feels safe, valued, and supported to grow in confidence, dignity, and personal worth.
Our safeguarding practices are built on the Scottish Government’s Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) framework and the associated Wellbeing Indicators. These principles guide our preventative work, shape the culture of care across the College, and help ensure every pupil has the best possible outcomes.
Child protection is a key part of our safeguarding approach. It refers specifically to the actions we take when we are concerned that a child may be at risk of significant harm. All staff are trained in our Child Protection Guidelines and follow clear procedures to ensure pupils are safe and supported at all times.
Safeguarding is integral to how we recruit, train, and support staff. We follow rigorous Safer Recruitment practices and complete thorough pre-employment checks, including Disclosure Scotland clearance
and references for all staff. Every member of staff - teaching and non-teachingreceives annual safeguarding training, with enhanced training provided to pastoral and safeguarding leads. We also offer tailored training on statutory safeguarding issues and emerging trends.
We believe safeguarding is most effective when pupils and families are informed, involved, and empowered. Our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme covers key areas such as online safety, personal wellbeing, and risk awareness. Senior pupils in leadership roles receive additional safeguarding training, and parents/carers are invited to regular sessions focused on supporting safety and wellbeing at home.
For full safeguarding and child protection policies, please log in to My School Portal: www.myschoolportal.co.uk
Pastoral care is at the heart of all we do in the Junior School. Guided by Cura Personalis - care for the whole person - we strive to know every child as an individual, so we can support, encourage, and challenge them with genuine care and understanding.
All staff contribute to our welcoming, nurturing environment, creating a safe space where pupils can take risks, explore new ideas and grow in confidenceknowing they are supported by the community around them.
The pastoral care and wellbeing of our pupils is overseen by Mrs Emma Doherty, Assistant Head of the Junior School,
who ensures that each child’s social and emotional needs are met. We value the strong partnerships we build with parents and carers, working together to keep our children firmly at the centre of everything we do.
For further information on pastoral care and support services, please log in to My School Portal: www.myschoolportal.co.uk
Our dedicated Additional Support team works closely with class teachers to provide tailored guidance for pupils who may benefit from extra help with their learning. This support may be short or long term, and is always shaped by the needs of the individual child.
Support may include additional time to explore concepts, enhanced learning activities, or pastoral support during challenging periods. Programmes are carefully designed in partnership with teaching staff to ensure every pupil can flourish both in and beyond the classroom.
For more on Additional Support and how it works in the Junior School, please log in to My School Portal: www.myschoolportal.co.uk
We work hard to maintain a safe and secure environment across the College. All entrances are fitted with security systems, and visitors must enter through the main Junior School Reception. Kindergarten access is by adult entry code only.
For safety, children should not use exit buttons or hold doors open for others. Kindergarten families may use the designated playground parking with a valid permit. We ask that this area is used only for drop-off/pick-up and is cleared promptly.
P1-P6 pupils are met at the rear door and escorted to the playground.
P7 pupils are dropped at the Sports Hall.
Playground gates open at 2.40pm for collection.
Please exit by 3.30pm to allow space for after-school activities.
For full safety guidance and drop-off details, please log in to My School Portal: www.myschoolportal.co.uk
On the first day, P1 pupils should arrive at 9.30am and will be met by their teacher in the rear playground. Parents are welcome to accompany children into the classroom, where pegs, seats, and lunch box areas will be clearly labelled. From day two, P1s will be met by Classroom Assistants and taken to the Atrium. P2-P7 pupils should arrive before 8.55am and go directly to the playground.
P1 - P3 finish at 3.15pm. All pupils are dismissed from the rear of the Junior School. Please notify staff if someone else will be collecting your child, and ensure that collectors are aged 16 or over.
Homework begins with short, daily tasks that reinforce class learning - typically 20 minutes for P1 and P2, rising to 30 minutes by P3. It includes reading, spelling, and number or language work. No homework is given at weekends unless extra time is needed to complete unfinished tasks. Parent workshops are offered throughout the year to help support home learning.
We use Seesaw as a digital learning journal for P1-P5. It offers a window into classroom life and allows teachers to share updates, observations, photos, and key dates with families.
In Term 3, we begin the transition to Juniors by introducing elements of the P4 curriculum. P3 pupils take part in Games sessions at Millerston or Glasgow Green and can sign up for optional after-school clubs, including Homework Club. These activities help pupils adjust to a longer school day and working with specialist coaches.
We place great importance on helping children settle quickly and confidently when joining the Junior School. Pupils joining from P4-P7 take part in Taster and Induction Days and are buddied with classmates to help them build friendships from the start.
On the first morning, please bring your child to the Junior School Reception before 8.55am. They’ll be met by their class teacher and reunited with their buddy before beginning their day.
Early in the term, teachers work closely with pupils to build relationships, establish routines, and help them feel at home. We encourage strong links between school and home, and are always happy to hear from parents - no concern is too small. Our team will also check in with your child regularly throughout the year to ensure they feel supported and secure.
For Primary 7 pupils joining from other schools, we offer a dedicated Transition Day in the summer term. This gives new pupils the opportunity to enjoy time together, experience specialist teaching, and begin forming relationships with staff and peers.
All P7 pupils use an iPad in class, giving them access to homework, class resources, and the ability to contact teachers via Schoology when needed.
Our curriculum is designed to bring out the best in every child. It blends the academic excellence of over 500 years of Jesuit educational tradition with a forwardthinking approach that embraces creativity, technology, and personal growth.
Rooted in our Catholic ethos and shaped by the Jesuit Pupil Profile, our teaching aims to form young people who are compassionate and loving, curious and active, and grateful and generous in their relationships and actions. These values are embedded in day-to-day life, through learning, play, and reflection.
Pupil voice is central to the way we work, and we actively listen to children’s views and ideas. Lessons are delivered through a balance of discrete subjects and integrated topic work, guided by the principles of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence: challenge, depth, breadth, personalisation, progression, coherence, and relevance.
We strive to create happy, confident learners who recognise their own potential and are eager to contribute to the world around them. We will share updates with you regularly and work in close partnership to support and challenge your child as needed.
Homework is given Monday-Thursday and is intended to reinforce classwork. In P4-6, it should take around 45 minutes; in P7, up to 60 minutes. Tasks include core subjects and research work, with increasing independence expected as pupils progress.
Homework may be issued through Schoology or via the homework diary, which should be signed by a parent or carer.
We offer parent workshops during the year to support home learning, and always encourage open communication. If your child is struggling, please stop the session and let the class teacher know - homework is designed to consolidate learning, not cause stress.
From Primary 4, pupils take part in weekly Games sessions, with training taking place off-site at Millerston and Glasgow Green. On Games days, pupils should arrive in kit and bring their uniform to change into for lunch.
P6 and P7 pupils are encouraged to attend after-school Hockey and Rugby in Term 1 and 2, supporting their preparation for weekend matches and Saturday morning sport.
A full timetable, including details of specialist teaching and class sessions, will be shared at the start of the school year. Additional enrichment includes Music tuition, Infant and Junior Choirs, Orchestra, and Schola (by audition).
We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are key to a child’s success. You are your child’s first and most important educator, and we welcome the insights you can share about their interests, progress, or any support they may need. This helps us understand and care for each child more fully - in keeping with our Jesuit value of cura personalis.
The Junior School operates an open-door policy. Class teachers are available for informal conversations at the beginning or end of the school day, and we are always happy to meet more formally if required. Please contact the Junior School Reception on 0141 331 9200 or email jsadmin@staloysius.org to arrange an appointment.
From Primary 1 onwards, pupil progress is shared with families through regular assessment, written reports, and conversations with class teachers. Our online Gradebooks are uploaded to My School Portal throughout the year and provide a snapshot of each child’s progress.
In the Infant years, we build strong foundations in core skills. Weekly learning journals and ongoing formative assessments help track individual development. In Term 3, Primary 3 pupils complete online assessments in Language and Mathematics to support their transition into the Junior section.
In the Junior years (P4-P7), pupils are assessed regularly in a broad range of subjects including Mathematics, Language, Humanities, RE, Science, Art, Music, and Modern Languages. These modular assessments are accompanied by effort
grades and help identify strengths, progress, and next steps in learning.
Two formal written reports are shared each year - an Interim Report in December and a full End of Year Report in June. We also hold Parents’ Evenings in Term 1 and Term 2, offering opportunities to meet with class teachers and, where needed, specialist staff.
To access Gradebooks, reports, and Parents’ Evening bookings, please log in to My School Portal: www. myschoolportal.co.uk
Good communication between home and school helps us support every child with care and consistency. If you have a question, update, or concernno matter how small - please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
In the Junior School, your child’s class teacher or key worker is usually the best first point of contact for everyday matters. If you’d like to speak to them in person, please call or email Reception to arrange a suitable time. If the teacher is unavailable, Mrs Doherty, Assistant Head will be able to assist, or an appointment will be arranged for a later date.
For more serious matters or anything requiring further discussion, please contact the Junior School Head Teacher. The most effective way to ensure your query reaches the right person is by directing it through Reception.
We aim to respond promptly - typically within 48 hours - even if it’s just to acknowledge your message and let you know when you’ll hear more.
Email is our primary method of communication with families. Please make sure we have your most up-to-date email address, and check your inbox (and spam folder) regularly to avoid missing key updates. We also send out regular Dates for Diaries to help you stay informed about events, clubs, and calendar changes.
To support a calm and focused learning environment, all mobile phones and smart watches with messaging or calling functions should be switched off during the school day. Pupils who bring phones to school must hand them to their class teacher at registration; they will be returned at home time.
Our Reception team is always happy to pass on any urgent messages during the school day.
We use a range of digital platforms to help families stay connected, informed and involved in school life. Below is a quick guide to the main tools you’ll use as a parent at St Aloysius’ College.
