Alban Pilgrimage
Saturday 25 June, 11am - 5.30pm Join us for this magnificent procession to celebrate St Alban, Britain’s first saint.
Each year, 12ft carnival puppets, portraying characters from the story of St Alban, march through the streets to reenact the historic events leading up to Alban’s execution. The puppets are accompanied by people of all ages, dressed as many characters, creating a spectacular display of colour and celebration.

On the day
11am Join us for the Alban Pilgrimage - a magnificent procession organised by St Albans Cathedral, to celebrate St Alban, Britain’s first saint. Starting from St Peter’s Church. 12noon All are invited to join our choral Eucharist, with preacher Paula Gooder, Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral. 4pm Join us for Evensong, with guest preacher Inderjit Bhogal OBE. This service ends with a procession to the shrine of St Alban, where red roses are placed on the shrine in an act of remembrance.
Pilgrimage Puppets Exhibition
21 May - 24 June, 8.30am - 5.30pm A stunning exhibition of the giant puppets used in the Alban Pilgrimage. As you walk around the Cathedral, see many characters from a remarkable moment in history over 1700 years ago. Free, no booking required.
Pilgrimage Day Tudor Festival
25 June, 12noon - 5pm Continue the Pilgrimage Day celebrations with an afternoon of Tudor-themed fun on the Abbey Orchard. Meet King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and try your hand at playing Tudor games with re-enactment group Tudor Legacies, as well as lots of other activities fit for the whole family. Free, no booking required.

June and July Pilgrimage & Transition Days are a special opportunity for all Year 6 pupils making the transition from Primary to Secondary schools to reflect on their educational journey past, present, and future. Come along for a pilgrim walk, a reflective workshop and a Silent Disco! Tickets available for school bookings on our website.
