The Science Captains and science faculty organised an exciting Science week in Term 3, coinciding with National Science Week and exploring the theme ‘Deep Blue’.
There was a quiz each day of the week which enabled girls to earn points for their house, culminating in a house winner at the end of the week.
The week commenced with the first lot of rubber bands added to our watermelon friends to eventually explode the watermelon on Wednesday at lunch time.
On Tuesday, we observed the strange effects with dry ice and the ocean. Wednesday was an exciting lunch time with the explosion of the watermelon and Thursday rounded out the week with an interactive quiz.
Congratulations to Cavell who took our the inaugural Interhouse Science Week competition, very fitting given the national theme of ‘Deep Blue’!
BRIDGING the Gap

Girls in Engineering

The Year 9 Physical Science class were given a challenge to construct a bridge with limited materials. One of the major limitations being that none of the provided balsa wood was long enough to span the ‘valley’ in the scenario given to them. St Aidan’s entered a national bridge building competition which was unfortunately cancelled, however we continued to run with our internal competition.
We tested 42 bridges to see if they could carry a minimum 3kg load, or an ideal 10kg load. Seven bridges passed the 10kg threshold (this is roughly 100X the bridge weight). The competition final involved destructively testing the bridges to see which bridge can carry the greatest load.

Congratulations to Georgia Feros (Year 9) who won the competition!
