GROWTH AND MARKET SHARE GAINS AHEAD IN 2025?
OVER the page we share stats from the BMBI that show how tools and workwear sales have bucked the general trend over the last year, and seen some growth. Some of that value will no doubt be swallowed up with inflation, but nonetheless it’s a positive when other similar sectors stocked by merchants have contracted.
That growth has come despite sizeable disruption in the last 12 months. Buying group Troy UK went into administration (see page 5) in Feb ’25, just four months after FFX aka Folkestone Fixings went into administration (ITS has since bought the brand and web domain). The more general hardware, DIY and trade retail sector has seen Homebase enter administration in November, with new owner CDS Superstores (parent of The Range and Wilko) saving up to 70 of its stores, the other circa 50 stores being lined up for sale. Construction giant ISG went under in September… So, it’s been a good few months for administrators.
I don’t point all these things out to depress you, only to illustrate that it’s fair to say the tools trade has undergone significant disruption lately and, with those aforementioned exceptions aside, has come through it. There’s a certain resilience there. And, the harsh commercial reality is that these companies going to administration has likely left a few gaps in the market and opportunity for the remainder to gain some share. And, you could argue, the need to stay abreast of the latest developments in the market has rarely been as important. So, what’s in store for the rest of 2025? As I write this, it turns out that the UK economy grew more than predicted in February (by a whopping 0.5%), which is some rare encouragement. And as the dust settles on the disrupted supply chain outlined above, there’ll be more market share gains to be made. And then there are all the infrastructure investments promised of late, with no doubt opportunities to be a part of those positive developments available. Beyond that, I can’t really make too many promises about the rest of the year, but I can pretty much guarantee you there will be our second issue of TOOLS & DIY in time for the autumn season. To find out more about that, turn to page 18. Before you get there, we hope you enjoy the magazine and find some of it useful. Your input and feedback is welcomed – get in touch at the email below.

Tools prove robust in 2024
While 2024 was not a vintage trading year, according the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) tools were one of the few categories that sold more in Q4 2024. Tool sales were up 8.8% in the quarter, contrasting with an overall drop (0.5%) in total builders merchants’ value sales in Q4 2024.
Tools’ positive performance stretched over the entirety of 2024, so said the BMBI, with sales up 6.7% in value (alongside workwear & safetywear, which was up 10.8%).
With a variety of headwinds being endured by the worldwide economy, including tariffs and other political uncertainties that are now stretching well into Q2, expectations for 2025 are cautious, but with hopes tools and workwear can repeat 2024's growth.

Supplier shake up as Troy UK goes into administration
The NMBS reached out to members of Troy (UK) Limited after that buying group fell into administration in early February. Troy, a major UK buying group of 400plus members and organiser of trade show Troy Means Business, appointed joint administrators on 7 Feb 2025.
Following the news, NMBS said it was actively collaborating with Troy members to provide trading stability, guaranteed rebates and payment security. At the time, NMBS CEO Chris Hayward said: “It is critical that Troy’s independent merchant
1 IN 6 REPLACE WORKWEAR ONCE A YEAR + FRESH PRODUCTS
MrWorkwear has surveyed UK professionals about how often they clean and replace workwear items, with the results suggesting there is room for some improvement in the sector (as well as potential for more sales).
When asked how often they replace their workwear, 15% said they replace items once a year, 22% said they replace items once every two months.
Almost a quarter (24%) said they wash overalls one a week, while 10% said they wash them a few times per month.
Over two fifths (41%) said they are happy with their workwear, but 23% said they’d like to change items as they’re too tight fitting, suggesting there is room for wholesalers, brands and retailers to grow sales in the category. 10% said the items don’t suit different heights and body frames.

Bosch poll uncovers skilled trade optimism
Polling 1,008 participants in Germany for their views on the skilled trades, Bosch found that most of the younger generation were confident (40.9%) that the skilled trades sector will be able to attract young talent in the coming years. For older groups, this optimism evaporated, yet two thirds of all respondents advised young people to train in a skilled trade. 61% said better pay and working conditions would make the skilled trades more attractive for young people, 43.3% said improved promotion prospects and training would help, while 39.4% said fostering creativity and innovation would bolster recruitment. 89% of respondents considered skilled trades to be important or very important for society – cutting through age groups and regions. Sadly, the poll didn’t include UKcentric findings.

The latest torque tool from UK manufacturer Norbar aims to overcome some of the typical issues facing users across multiple industries, namely overheating and ensuring the tool is correctly set up in the first place…
The EvoTorque Battery Tool Compact (EBTC) from Norbar has been designed to tackle common challenges faced by torque tool operators, including overheating during operation and accurate setting up.
The compact battery powered torque tool features patented transducer control and ‘intelligent joint sensing’ technology for high accuracy and repeatability. It continually measures the joint during tightening and when necessary, employs dynamic braking to avoid torque overshoot, so it’s ideal for a range of bolting applications across multiple industries.
As aforementioned, a key challenge faced by lithiumpowered torque multipliers is overheating during operation, which can result in the operator temporarily suspending work while the tool cools down – ultimately affecting productivity.
The EBTC is equipped with a patent pending cooling system that significantly improves the thermal durability of the tool during operation, meaning the operator can continue bolt tightening where other tools would overheat.
// The compact battery powered torque tool features patented transducer control and ‘intelligent joint sensing’ technology for high accuracy and repeatability //
EBTC is the latest electronic torque tool developed and manufactured by Norbar. It brings together the company’s 80 years’ experience in producing highly accurate and efficient torque tools. The tool has the highly dependable class leading Norbar gearbox resulting in less downtime and fewer gearbox repairs – again leading to greater dependability and increased productivity. The gearbox is also designed with a ball bearing rotation system that makes it easier for the operator to set up on applications.
The ergonomically designed handle with integrated display screen makes it easier for the user to comfortably view the display whilst operating. This display provides clear, realtime feedback of torque data and allows for easy adjustments of tool settings.
Operator safety is Norbar’s priority with a 'safe to start' button enabled on the tool as factory default, helping to ensure hands are safely positioned at startup.

Each tool is supplied with a robust case designed to allow the tool to be stored with the reaction arm and socket fitted, enabling the end user to grab the tool from its case and apply to the application without the need to attach or remove the reaction every time.
“The new EBTC brings together all of the company’s experience in manufacturing powered tools,” says Ian Hyland, Product Manager at Norbar Torque Tools. “This is a new generation of torque tool that inherits all of the Norbar DNA, benefiting the user with the knowledge gained from decades of power tool evolution. The EBTC is an exceptionally high quality product that the end user can depend on for repeated accuracy and safety.”

“Own branded products can increase margin substantially”
Thanks to its latest investment, made in Q4, A W Tools – specialist in own branding – now has a huge number of ways to offer customers their own ranges of own branded products…
Don’t yet sell own branded products? Well maybe you’re missing a trick. Private labelling is seen as a quick and easy way to increase profit margins for wholesalers and retailers. A W Tools (Europe) Ltd is a specialist in the field and expects its customers to have a gross profit margin of 4050% by selling own branded products.
A W Tools has offered own branded solutions for high quality power tool accessories for many years. Utilising technical expertise gained from almost a century manufacturing circular saw blades in Sheffield it is now able to source and offer high quality products for far less than the main manufacturer brands. Understanding that own branding can only be successful when the product quality is high is central to everything A W Tools do.
Circular saw blades are still at the heart of the business (with one of the largest ranges stocked in the UK) and offer the most customisable options when it comes to own branding.
Previously, A W Tools has used screen printing to enable it to print onto the product itself so that the customer’s logo can still be seen even when all the packaging is thrown away. However, this process has its limitations so at the end of 2024 the firm invested in an industrial Ultra Violet Printer to enhance its offerings.
That investment into new printing technology has opened up a vast array of options which promise to keep the firm at the forefront of own branding, it says.
UV Printing allows A W Tools to now print in full colour and offer far more detailed prints. The firm can now even print pictures & QR codes onto products now – while screen printing is limited by single colour prints with subsequent loss of fine detail, the UV method overcomes those challenges and allows A W Tools the flexibility to supply products that are unique to their customers.
A W Tools can also offer a range of packaging options from free “neutral” packaging right the way through to fully printed own branded packaging, ensuring they have an option for all sizes of business they are supplying.
A W Tools supplies wholesalers and retailers of all sizes across the UK and Europe, offering a friendly and knowledgeable service with competitive prices and short lead times.

Cutting injuries on-site
In the workplace, 122,000 cases of lacerations are reported every year in Great Britain. With over two decades experience of keeping digits safe, Blackrock makes the case for preventative measures to help cut injuries on the site
We at Blackrock have over 20 years’ experience in designing and manufacturing PPE and our products keep hundreds of thousands of people safe every year.
As a longstanding member of the British Safety Industry Federation, we pride ourselves in ensuring that our products perform to the standards people need to help them do their jobs, as well as the service we offer our customers.
The recent suggestion by a leading plastic surgeon that avocados should carry warning labels – following a sizable rise in knife injuries from cutting into one – only underscores the potential, sometimes unobserved vulnerability we put our hands in whilst performing even the most menial of tasks.
It’s also a stark reminder of just how important it is to ensure those allimportant digits remain safe. Keeping hands and fingers out of harm’s way at work and play is critical and is one of our leading principles at Blackrock. Injuries don’t discriminate. No one’s hands are immune from possible hazards.
In a professional workplace, there are 122,000 selfreported cases of lacerations annually in Great Britain, with this figure remaining at that level over the recent years.
Hand injuries also make up a significant portion of everyday DIY mishaps, but it isn’t just the obvious hazards like knife wounds and cuts we need to be cognisant of. Handling even mildly corrosive products can result in skin burns and painful irritation if mismanaged.
Preventative measures can be put into place relatively easy if you’re considering the various factors needed to protect your hands and fingers.
// Injuries don’t discriminate. No one’s hands are immune from possible hazards //
Blackrock has a range of hand protection designed for a variety of industries, applications and hazards, ensuring you can find a glove that's perfectly matched to your needs.
This range of protection straddles both the domestic and professional market, with a prime example being our cut resistant gloves – a great piece of safety kit for those jobs in an industrial setting where the risk of hands receiving any kind lacerations are a potential daily possibility.

GOT IT COVERED?
With so many glove options available, geared up for a variety of different tasks and with different levels of safety and features, buying and stocking decisions are not always as straightforward as they may appear. Ironclad Performance Wear sheds some light on the options and levels to help guide the right purchase decisions…
Choosing hand protection for a workplace or particular task is a critical aspect of every safety professional’s job. It’s extremely important to make sure that the appropriate gloves are being used for the task at hand – for example, a person handling sheet metal will need high cut resistance and some dexterity so should not be using a heavy impact cut and sewn glove.
Your hands are the most valuable tools you have and protective gloves act as barrier against sharp objects, chemicals, abrasions and ensure your hands remain intact. Having the right glove for the job will reduce injuries, while saving time and money in the long run.
When recommending a suitable glove, it can be useful to run through the following principles;
- The task in hand: Is it a heavyduty or lightduty application?
- The types of hazards: Are there risks of cuts, abrasions, tearing, puncture, chemicals, impact?
- The required level of dexterity: Maximum flexibility / Tactility / Grip / Comfort
- The budget: Some materials are more expensive than others and some gloves go through many more processes than others during manufacture.
All gloves are different, some may look very similar but each provides their own benefits and protection for the wearer.
Most are tested in accordance with British Standards, BS EN 388:2016 and have cut, abrasion, tear, puncture ratings. Impact gloves also have an Impact rating, on BS EN 388 it tests the knuckle area only and gives a pass or fail result. The ANSI ISEA 138 Impact test method tests both the knuckles and the fingers; and provides an impact protection level from 13. Ironclad Performance Wear developed their own impact testing which goes above and beyond the standard tests, providing
The most important factor is protection for the wearer
Impact test data for the knuckles, fingers and metacarpal areas. Gloves come in two main forms, cut and sewn or knit. Cut and sewn gloves are made from different swatches of fabric sewn together with thread. Seamless knit gloves are made on a dedicated glove knitting machine using engineered yarns instead of fabrics and sewing thread. These methods result in two very different glove types with different features and benefits.
Cut and sewn gloves are in the most part more expensive to make, can use more technical fabrics, can be labour intensive but allow for specific requirements ie. High abrasion palm or thumb crotch. Knit gloves are lower cost, much easier to make, more comfortable to wear as have no seams and allow for wider variety of yarns/dipped finishes but allow for less specific requirements.
Budget and task in hand are sometimes ultimate deciders for end users, low cost knits can be used as single use (although we discourage this where possible) whereas cut and sewn gloves can be used many times, hand washed and, in some cases, used for several years. Ultimately, the most important factor is protection for the wearer, Ironclad Performance Wear Task Specific Safety Gloves are designed for Safety & Performance helping each wearer get the job done more safely, efficiently and effectively. LOCKED, LOADED AND ROLLING OUT
The tool storage market has exploded in recent years, with increasing awareness of how the right kind of storage and mobile options can make a difference to efficiency and comfort when lugging tools and consumables around…
WIHA’S NEW XL2 TROLLEY TARGETS ELECTRICIANS
A reliable, robust and multipurpose tool case is indispensable for a pro electrician and the new XL2 trolley electric from Wiha offers mobility, a clever conceived layout and comprehensive content all in one.
The XL2 offers flexible organisation with plenty of storage space: A flexible plugin module system allows easy and onehanded removal and return of tools. In addition, a large number of loops and flexible plugin plastic dividers for the individual division of the bottom tray for clearly structured organisation and room for additional equipment.
Rollers and an extralong telescopic handle ensure comfortable transport of up to 35 kg of tools. Wiha has also thought of the valuable digits of electricians, with gasfilled shock absorbers that prevent the lid from suddenly falling shut.
It’s tough as you might expect, with a robust and impactresistant case protecting the contents reliably and securely. The lock and air pressure compensation valve additionally allow the tool case to be safely transported in planes.
“With the XL 2 Trolley electric, we offer electricians a product that significantly facilitates their work processes. It offers the right balance of storage space, mobility and functionality that is required at the construction site,” explains Sven Wilde, Head of Central Marketing at Wiha.

MILWAUKEE’S PUNCHY TOTE PACKOUT RANGE

The PACKOUT 38cm ClosedTote Toolbag offers more protection and organisation with almost double the internal and external pockets (65) along with storage features such as Drings, tape clips, zip pockets and internal and external pockets.
Offering the same robust construction as the PACKOUT ProTote Toolbag, it features layered 1680D and 1800D ballistic materials, an impact resistant moulded base and allmetal hardware for maximum durability, rigidity and protection against jobsite debris. About
The UK power tool market was estimated to be circa £1.59 billion in 2020, rising to £1.9 billion by 2027 (according to Statista). Meanwhile, the hand tools market is expected to increase £254 million between 2023 and 2028 (stats via Technavio). Few are predicting sector contraction and, despite a sub-optimal market backdrop, the tools category has proved to be a consistent performer: As you may have read in the news section of this issue, the tools category was one of the best performers for UK builders merchants in 2024.
With an ongoing trend for onshoring and reshoring – the UK remains one of the world’s top manufacturing nations – a rise in infrastructure projects including Heathrow and an ambitious house building target, not to mention the continuing rise of DIY, the mid-term future of the tools and related markets is, it seems, indisputably bright.
So it makes sense to stay informed. With market disruption seemingly the norm for the past few years, with major players leaving the market and – therefore – opportunities for those that remain to gain market share, having clarity and solid information about the market is a must now more than ever.
…which is where we come in. Published twice a year and providing insights on market sectors, products, brands, businesses and services, TOOLS & DIY is a targeted print publication dedicated exclusively to the latest hand and power tools, alongside key developments across the entire DIY industry.
