Hi, Welcome to the stage@leeds spring/summer 2013 brochure. As usual we have a season packed with the best in new work from established artists like Douglas Thorpe (Mad Dogs Dance Theatre - Dogs Land) and Ellie Harrison (Etiquette of Grief) to premieres by emerging artists such as Magpies Three (To Do) and Gavin Leonard (Space: Needed). We are also pleased to welcome back YEP particiapants The Hungry Bitches with a totally reworked version of their modern hipster musical ‘Facehunters’ after its hugely succesful run in Edinburgh.

The PAD (Professional Artist Development) programme provides professional theatre and dance makers with a rehearsal space, technical support and a relaxed environment in which to create work. The programme was established in 2009 and so far we have worked with over a dozen UK and international companies including The Paper Birds, Red Ladder, Art Of Spectra, David Shearing and stage@leeds associate artists The Skeleton Project. PAD is free to invited artists and runs throughout the year. If you are interested in participating in the programme please contact Steve Ansell.

YEP (Young Entrepreneurs’ Programme) provides University of Leeds’ students with professional support and the opportunity to produce shows for performance at stage@leeds. YEP companies and company members have gone on to win critical acclaim and awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the National Student Drama Festival. Artists such as the award winning DugOut Theatre, and The Hungry Bitches have been YEP participants.

Touchingly poignant, yet frighteningly real, this new adaptation will leave you thinking long after you leave the theatre. Directed by NSDF12-ISDF Director’s Guild Award winner Harry Williams.

‘Contractions’ is the first show by Parapet Theatre (a derivative of award winning DugOut Theatre).

The Object Show We like objects, so we decided to make a show about them‌ Investigating elements of theatre, physical movement and scenography, The Object Show looks into our connection with the aesthetics of everyday objects. With an entwined collage-like narrative that explores themes around identity, memory and materialism, this show is based on our daily experiences with objects and the environment.

Following a successful performance installation in Leicester, Cognito Theatre explores the topic of mental health. The stories and thoughts of real people are used to dismiss the myths, challenge the stigma and question why ‘talking about it all’ is still so difficult.

The Smell of Envy

What is the smell of desire?

The smell of death?

The smell of childhood?

What is the smell of a telephone conversation with your dead father?

The Smell of Envy investigates the neuroscience of smell, memory and place in a collaboration between Pigeon Theatre and cognitive neuroscientist Dr Colin Lever. Using a smell-scape of familiar and unfamiliar smells and a company of older actors, this is a show about smell and memory and place and love and death and nostalgia and ageing and desire and loathing and envy.

Classmates Lovers Perpetrators Murderers Based on true events in the small town of Jedwabne, Eastern Poland, Tadeusz Slobodzianek’s play ‘Our Class’ follows the lives of ten classmates as they fall in love, turn against each other and ultimately risk everything. Set against the turbulent background of 20th Century Polish history the play deals with betrayal, love, murder, revenge and secrets.

A new version of Sophocles’ Antigone addressing issues of personal identity, political freedom and three doomed weddings. Set in a wedding shop, this performance of Antigone updates the original text with a vibrant, contemporary physical production.

The curtain is opened to uncover a touching yet tragic story of love, power and emotional attachment between man and wife, when their relationship is at breaking point.

Witness a man’s explosion of unbridled testosterone amidst surprising tenderness following his wife’s deceit.

Douglas Thorpe is tipped to be one of the most important voices in UK dance. In true Mad Dogs style, ‘Dogs Land’ is hard-hitting, highly physical dance theatre at its most fierce, exciting and challenging.

Thousands of people struggle to cope with the deaths of Princess Diana, Jade Goody, Michael Jackson and occasionally their own loved ones. Ellie knows it can be difficult to express feelings of anger, sadness and loss. She would like to provide you with some moral support, dutch courage and perhaps even a musical accompaniment to help you at this testing time. Ellie’s distinctive brand of solo performance is a celebration of our freedom of expression, even in our darkest of moments.
