In a PGA Tour season full of rising stars and inspiring storylines, few have struck a chord quite like Aaron Rai’s steady rise – and right there with him every step of the way has been his close friend and caddie, Jason Timmis. Together, they’ve built something special: a partnership rooted in loyalty, mutual respect and relentless hard work. And after a standout 2024 season, it’s clear that Team Rai has arrived.
Aaron Rai’s defining moment of 2024 came at the Wyndham Championship, where he claimed his first PGA Tour title in style. With calm, clinical rounds of 65, 65, 68 and 64, he finished 18-under-par to lift the trophy – a huge milestone for the Wolverhampton-born pro.
But that win in North Carolina was just part of the story. Rai also
clocked five top-10 finishes, made 14 straight cuts, and earned a spot at the Tour Championship – all without playing a single Signature Event. Statistically, he was one of the most consistent players on Tour: 4th in strokes gained and 8th in approach. Precision, poise, and preparation – Rai had it all.
Long admired by British golf fans for his composed, no-fuss style, Rai has now made a serious impression on the global stage.
Behind every great player is someone helping to guide the way. For Aaron Rai, that person is Jason Timmis. A former pro himself, with experience on the EuroPro and Challenge Tours, Jason brings a deep understanding of the game – and an easy going, thoughtful presence that perfectly matches Rai’s own measured approach.
Their story together started naturally. They’d played in a few EuroPro events and got along well. One day, Timmis mentioned he might be up for giving caddying a go – and the rest, as they say, is history.
Since then, they’ve tackled the highs and lows of Tour life together. One standout memory came during the 150th Open at St Andrews. Rai, then second reserve, drove through the night and ended up sleeping in Jason’s campervan. The next morning? He was in the field. That kind of story says a lot about the bond between them.
Timmis is known for being meticulous with his prep – yardage books detailed to the inch, strategic planning, calm under pressure. During the Wyndham win, that calmness and clarity helped Rai keep his focus when it mattered most.
But more than just colleagues, they’re close mates too. After the win, Timmis joked they might celebrate with a few beers –knowing full well that Rai doesn’t drink. It’s that kind of light-hearted, honest friendship that keeps things grounded.
On the Biggest Stages
Their hard work paid off again in 2025, with Rai earning spots in all four Majors and every Signature Event – a clear sign of how far they’d come.
At The Masters, Rai showed real grit, finishing tied for 27th with a total of 1-under-par. He hit every fairway –100% driving accuracy – at Augusta, no less. A phenomenal stat.
“Success at Augusta is all about control,” said Timmis. “You’ve got to hit it high, leave yourself uphill putts, and avoid silly mistakes. It’s a place where patience pays.”
Over at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, Rai battled his way to a T39 finish with four solid rounds. It’s a course that tends to favour the big hitters, and Timmis called it “a bit of a bomber’s paradise” –especially the brutal closing stretch known as the Green Mile.
Not everyone’s in love with the layout, though. One caddie quipped that the first should be a par-5, and the fourth is “too penal.” Hunter Mahan even once described the course as being “like a Kardashian – modern, beautiful, well-kept, but lacking character.”
Still, Rai held his own. Big stage, tough course – same steady Aaron.
As 2025 rolls on, Team Rai looks stronger than ever. Their success isn’t just about results or rankings –it’s built on something deeper: trust, loyalty, and total belief in each other.
In a sport where the line between winning and missing the cut is razor-thin, the player-caddie relationship can make all the difference. For Aaron Rai, having Jason Timmis by his side has been a game-changer.
With momentum behind them and the golfing world paying attention, one thing’s for sure – this team’s just getting started.
Staffordshire is home to a diverse range of golf clubs — each with its own history, character, and community. Club 47 celebrates just that: a collection of proud local courses that continue to thrive thanks to their unique charm and dedicated members.
From the heather-lined fairways of Beau Desert to the strategic challenges of Bloxwich, and the friendly, laid-back atmosphere of Blythe Bridge, these clubs represent the heart and soul of grassroots golf in the region. Whether you’re a seasoned player looking for your next challenge or a casual golfer in search of a welcoming atmosphere, there’s a course in Staffordshire for everyone.
Let’s take a closer look at the next three clubs in our list that help to shape the spirit of Staffordshire golf.
Tucked away in the heart of Cannock Chase, Beau Desert is one of Staffordshire’s true golfing treasures. Designed by the legendary Herbert Fowler and established in 1911, this heathland masterpiece is known for its natural beauty, strategic layout, and quietly magical atmosphere. At 6,470 yards, with a par of 70, the course combines undulating fairways, fast greens, and striking heather-lined holes that challenge and delight in equal measure.
Regularly ranked among England’s finest, Beau Desert is as peaceful as it is prestigious—where it’s not uncommon to share your round with a passing stag rather than a crowd. The club blends history with modern comfort, thanks to a welcoming clubhouse (built in 1994) complete with dining spaces, event areas, and a well-stocked pro shop offering equipment and expert tuition. Whether you’re chasing a score or simply soaking in the serenity, Beau Desert delivers a golfing experience to remember.
Set on the northern edge of the Black Country, Bloxwich Golf Club is a hidden gem with nearly a century of golfing heritage. Opened in 1924 and designed by George Coburn—who cut his teeth under Old Tom Morris—this mature parkland layout stretches 6,329 yards and plays to a par of 71. Expect tree-lined fairways, gently rolling terrain, and water hazards that keep even seasoned players on their toes.
Memorable holes include the challenging 12th, with water guarding both the drive and approach, and the 18th—a true test of nerve with a long drive over water and an uphill finish. Off the course, Bloxwich impresses with its range of practice facilities and a welcoming clubhouse offering everything from a relaxed drink at the bar to expert advice in the pro shop.
Easily accessible from Walsall and the M6, Bloxwich Golf Club offers a warm welcome and a course that rewards smart play and confident shot-making.
Small in size but big on charm, Blythe Bridge Golf Club—formerly Creda Golf Club—is a delightful 9-hole course nestled in Stoke-on-Trent. First opened in 1952, the course may be compact at just over 4,300 yards (par 62), but it’s full of character. Tight, tree-lined fairways and clever hazards ensure you’ll need to think your way around each hole, making it ideal for sharpening your game.
With its roots alongside the historic Creda Works on Grindley Lane, the club has a relaxed, community feel that welcomes players of all levels. It’s not flashy—but it doesn’t need to be. Blythe Bridge is the kind of course where friendships form easily, and where the focus is simply on enjoying golf in a peaceful, picturesque setting.
When I first stepped into the role of Under 18 Team Manager for Staffordshire, I knew there was potential. You could feel it at the grassroots level — the quiet determination in the eyes of young players, the growing interest from clubs, and the supportive hum from parents and volunteers behind the scenes. But what’s happened over the past few years has exceeded all my expectations.
Staffordshire junior golf is on the rise, and nowhere is that more evident than in our U18 squad. At the heart of it all has been a shift in mindset. We stopped looking at junior golf as just a stepping stone to adult competitions and started treating it like the foundation of our county’s golfing future. We built a structure around development, opportunity, and pride in representing Staffordshire — and the players responded.
From the winter training sessions at JCB to putting and short game sessions, we’ve given these lads the tools and the confidence to push their limits. We don’t just look at handicaps — we look at attitude, coachability, and how they support each other as teammates. It’s that team spirit that’s made all the difference.
The depth of talent is growing too. The pathway from club golf to county representation has become clearer. Our partnership with the county development squads
ensures that U14 and U16 players are getting ready to step up. When they do, they arrive not just with ability, but with an understanding of what it means to wear the Staffordshire badge.
Off the course, we’ve put a huge emphasis on character. Respect, sportsmanship, and accountability are cornerstones of our programme. We encourage players to take ownership of their development — setting goals, managing their schedules, and learning how to perform under pressure. And thanks to support from the Staffordshire Union and key people behind the scenes, we’ve been able to back that up with resources, equipment, and expert coaching.
This rise isn’t just about competition — it’s about culture. We’ve created an environment where young players want to be part of the Staffordshire setup. They talk about the team with pride. They look forward to matches and squad days. And they support each other — win or lose.
We’re now seeing juniors who began as quiet, shy 13-year-olds becoming confident, articulate 17-year-olds — ready to move into adult teams, county first teams, and in some cases, England Golf squads. That’s the real success story.
Looking ahead, the future is bright. There’s a buzz at junior opens and club events, more clubs are investing in junior sections, and we’re working hard to reach schools and communities that haven’t traditionally been involved in golf. Our goal isn’t just to produce good golfers — it’s to create lifelong ambassadors for the game.
I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved. And if this is just the beginning, then Staffordshire golf has some incredible years ahead.
Craig Johnson Team Manager, Staffordshire U18s Golf Team
Staffordshire’s reputation as growing premier golfing County has been further cemented with three of our golf clubs making the Top 100 English Golf Courses list for 2025. JCB Golf and Country Club ranked 39th, whilst Beau Desert Golf Club and Little Aston were placed at 49th and 60th respectively.
When the courses are ranked, five things are taken into consideration: Golf course architecture; strategic challenge; variety; consistency of calibre and golf course & land management. Top 100 golf courses champions strategic golf, which by their definition is “varied, interesting, engaging golf that asks questions answered by different golfers in different ways”.
JCB Golf and Country club also found themselves named in the top five UK Parkland courses, cementing themselves on both lists after only opening in 2018. Designed by Robin Hiseman of European Golf Design, the course is famous for its elevation changes and water features perfectly captured on their famous 17th hole, a challenging 260 yard par 3, that plays downhill over a vast body of water.
Beau Desert, is a historic heathland golf course, nestled in Cannock Chase. It continues to receive praise from the golfing world for its challenging layout, stunning bunkering and surroundings of Cannock Chase.
Situated in Sutton Coldfield, Little Aston has always been regarded as one of the Midlands’ finest parklands, with a proud tradition of hosting top-level amateur and professional events, including regional qualifying for The Open Championship. With a blend of modern design, tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers it’s certainly a test of your abilities.
County Secretary of the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs, Gareth Shaw, said: “It’s great to see so many of the Staffordshire Golf courses feature in the Top 100 list. We’ve always been banging the drum here at the Union that there are some incredibly underrated golf courses in Staffordshire, so it’s great to see some finally get the recognition they deserve.
“JCB, Beau Desert and Little Aston all have a great team of staff that ensure their courses are in top shape all year round. They all present their own challenges and are quirky in their own ways. I would highly recommend to anyone reading that if you get the chance to play all three, you won’t regret it.”
The recognition of all three clubs further highlights the amount of incredible golf courses in the County, and underlines the fact that Staffordshire is a golfing destination for golfers seeking a challenge and an unforgettable experience.

The 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Coven has beaten off stiff competition from around the country to win the prestigious title of ‘Golf Facility of the Year’ at last night’s England Golf Awards. The award recognises the inclusive, welcoming and diverse nature of the venue, the role it plays in the local community, and its commitment to developing golf and golfers. This is also the second award for the venue in less than a week having won bronze in the new business category at the Staffordshire Tourism Awards.
Over the last 39 years, the 3 Hammers has built a reputation as a pioneering venue and industry leader offering best in class facilities. By offering different golf formats and non-golf activities, it has become an asset to the local community as well as attracting golfers from across the region. The 3 Hammers team is also proactively engaged in community outreach work with schools, underprivileged youngsters and disability groups most recently, developing routes into golf for the National Autistic Society. Over 1,000 children from local schools have enjoyed free sessions at 3 Hammers’ 18-hole Adventure Golf course, Jurassic Creek, in the last 12 months alone.
“I am very proud of the facilities we have at 3 Hammers, but this award goes to our incredible staff who deliver the welcoming, personal, inclusive experience that the judges recognised. The 5 team members at the awards have worked here for 148 years collectively, which shows how much our team love the venue and everything it stands for,” comments owner of 3 Hammers Ian Bonser. “Whilst golf is our business, our open-door policy means everyone is welcome. We are home to regular walking groups, dementia meet-ups and school groups. Our golfers are aged from 18-months to 90 years old, so no day here looks the same here. We don’t care what
you wear or how you play golf, we just want you to have the best time possible while you are with us.”
3 Hammers is made up of Jurassic Creek a dinosaur themed Adventure Golf course, a Par 3 course, Toptracer Driving Range, Bistro, Learn to Play area and Golf Academy - all managed from a central reception desk where everyone receives the same warm welcome. This set-up means that there are multiple entry points into the sport, all of which offer a pathway to learning to play, becoming regular golfers and even taking up careers in the industry. More than 30 people who have started at 3 Hammers now have jobs in golf including Tour players and internationally recognised coaches.
“Accessibility and affordability are the keys to our success,” comments Ian. “I hope more golf facilities see
what we have achieved here and develop their sites to make them more attractive to their local communities. We have players who started their journey with us 3 decades ago, brought their children here and are now bringing their grandchildren. It does not matter to us whether they are playing adventure golf, hitting drivers on the range, playing the short course or practising on our indoor putting green. Golf in all its formats, is still golf and the more participants we have the better.”
Gareth Shaw: I’m going to talk about your journey and what you’re up to now. First off, tell me about your journey into golf — how you got started and your county experience.
Alexei Glass: I started golf at a young age, going to driving range lessons at Branston Golf and Country Club. I started off with Ian Ross, who was the head pro at the time, and then progressed onto the academy course. It was a great development course for juniors at the time. The academy was a short nine-hole golf course with par threes and fours, which was perfect for junior golf development. The longest hole was about 350 yards, so it was great for juniors.
As I progressed, I got into the Staffordshire under-14 team and then continued into the under-16 and under-18 teams. I had some success with the teams, and it was a great camaraderie, which I really enjoyed.
G.S: And now, where are you at in your journey? What are your aspirations in the game?
In the latest issue of the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs podcast, Gareth Shaw chatted with aspiring professional golfer and former county player, Alexei Glass, who is now studying at the Tournament Golf College in St. Mellion.
A.G: A lot of golfers struggle with their direction after 18. Some turn professional, some go to the States, but I was lucky enough to find the Tournament Golf College. It’s based in Cornwall for three months, then three months out in Portugal, so you get a nice warm-weather training just before the season starts. I did my undergraduate degree there, a BSc in Tournament Golf.
After that, I had to take a year out due to spinal surgery. I decided to stay in education a little longer to progress in performance coaching, so when the opportunity came up for the college to develop a master’s degree in golf performance management, I took it. I’m in my second year now and nearly finishing up.
G.S: That’s amazing. Was the Tournament Golf College your first choice when you were looking at options?
A.G: It wasn’t my first choice, to be honest. I looked online at different universities. I’d signed up with an American recruitment college, but that didn’t go down well. I also found a gap year programme in Spain, the University Golf Programme Malaga, which looked amazing. But there’s not much in England for golf or sports development in universities. It’s more of a side hustle for most students.
Luckily, I came across the Tournament Golf College at St Mellion Golf Resort, which is an incredible resort. It’s one of the hardest courses I’ve ever played, and the college is based there, so it seemed like the perfect fit for me.
G.S: How did you find the transition of leaving home? Was it difficult moving away, or did you settle in quite easily?
A.G: It was quite difficult at first. Cornwall is a good 4-5 hours from Staffordshire, so it’s not easy to just pop home. I didn’t have a car in my first year; I only passed my test halfway through the term. So, I relied on the train to get home during half-terms, and I’d hitch a ride with other students who had cars. But it was manageable.
The accommodation at the college is fantastic, too. I’ve heard from other students at traditional universities that student accommodation is pretty basic, but at the Tournament Golf College, we have fantastic holiday homes at Crylla Valley, so it made the transition a lot easier.
G.S: That sounds fantastic. And then there’s the warm-weather training in Portugal. How was that experience?
A.G: Portugal was incredible. We were based about 40 minutes from Faro Airport at Amanduera Golf Resort, which is just beautiful. The resort offers three courses, all of different designs. One is flat but long — one of the longest in the Algarve. Another one is a Faldo-designed course, which is tough with a lot of elevation changes, and the third is a short
par-three course, perfect for improving your wedge play and short game.
We spent 11 weeks there from January to March, so it’s perfect for warm-weather training just before the season kicks off. The weather’s fantastic, usually 15 to 25 degrees, and sunny almost every day. It really gives you an advantage for the upcoming golf season.
G.S: That sounds amazing. I imagine that really helps you get ahead of the competition. With all this golfing experience, do you have any jobs alongside your studies, or is it all focused on your golf?
A.G: At the moment, it’s a mix of studying and playing. I work at Branston Golf and Country Club in the kitchen, behind the bar, and now in the gym, which is the area I want to work in — physical golf performance. My master’s degree has helped me with that, and I’m working with elite golfers at Branston as well, supporting the S&C coaches and helping golfers with their warm-ups and conditioning.
G.S: Have you made any good friends at the college? What’s the atmosphere like there?
A.G: When I first joined, everyone seemed to be aiming for professional tournament golf, but now it’s a mix of people who want to play professionally and those who want to get into the business side of golf. We’ve had some great success stories, like Ben Stowe, who was one of the first graduates and went on to play on the European Tour, and Billy Joe Smith, who got her European Tour card last year. There are a lot of success stories coming out of the college.
G.S: And for you, what’s your ultimate dream in golf? Is it to make it on the DP World or PGA Tour, or is your focus now on the coaching and performance side?
A.G: I would have loved to be a professional golfer, but injuries have put a stop to that for now. I’d love to help golfers at all levels, whether it’s elite players or club golfers. My
goal now is to work in physical golf performance and injury prevention, helping players avoid injuries like low back pain. I’d love to work with European Tour or PGA Tour players and travel the world with them, supporting them on the performance side.
G.S: Traveling with golf sounds like a great lifestyle. Does the experience with the college, having been to places like Portugal, give you a taste for travelling the world in the golf industry?
A.G: I’ve travelled quite a lot in my life. I’ve been to a few countries and taken holidays, but this experience with the Tournament Golf College has definitely made me want to travel more, especially to America. I haven’t travelled that far yet, but I’d love to go there and work with golfers on the PGA Tour or even just travel for the experience.
G.S: For anyone listening today, if they’re interested in the Tournament Golf College, how would you sell it to them? Why should they choose it over other options, like going to America?
A.G: The college has everything you need. The staff are fantastic. Darren Gass, the head coach, has coached
England teams and Tour players, and Tommy Bright, the S&C coach, helps players get stronger and fitter. The warm-weather training in Portugal is second to none—while the weather in England can be tough, we have three months in the sun to prepare. The golf courses are top-tier, and we also get to play in pro events like the Pro Golf Tour in Portugal. It’s a great way to develop your game, whether you want to turn professional or go down the business side of golf. There’s something for everyone at the college.
G.S: It sounds like an amazing opportunity, Alexi. Thank you for sharing your experience today. If anyone wants to find more information about the Tournament Golf College, where can they go?
A.G: You can search for Tournament Golf College or TGC on Instagram (or search engine), and you’ll find us.

The 2025 Staffordshire Amateur Golf Championship is scheduled for Saturday, 14 June, at Sandwell Park Golf Club in West Bromwich. This prestigious event, organised by the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs, brings together the county’s top amateur golfers to compete for one of Staffordshire’s most coveted titles.
Sandwell Park Golf Club, established in 1895 and designed by renowned architect Harry Colt, offers a challenging 18-hole, par-71 course. Recent renovations have aimed to restore its original heathland character, enhancing its status as a championship venue. The course’s strategic bunkering and fast greens provide a rigorous test for competitors.
The championship is a key fixture in the county’s golfing calendar, with past winners often progressing to higher levels of competition. As the event approaches, anticipation is building among players and spectators alike for a day of high-calibre amateur golf.
Gareth Shaw, County Secretary said: “The Staffordshire Amateur is one of the most prestigious events of the County calendar. It’s the one that all Staffordshire golfers should want to win. We’re delighted to head to Sandwell Park for this year’s instalment, which is the home of our County Seniors.
“We can’t wait to see all of you there, in what we hope will be a great day of golf.”
