STAFFORDSHIRE GOLFER

Welcome to issue fifteen of The Staffordshire Golfer, and with it, we bring the start of the golfing season!
There has been plenty going on behind the scenes at County HQ as we prepare for the upcoming season. Kevin Beattie has been settling into his role as Head of Elite Golf and has named James O’Keeffe as the new first-team captain. We caught up with James for a new episode of the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs podcast, where he delves into the start of his golfing career and shares his aspirations for his first season as captain. James brings a new approach to the captaincy of the first team and his thoughts on the season ahead make for refreshing reading.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate one of our own, Richard Mansell, on his maiden DP World Tour victory at the Porsche Singapore Classic. If you’re reading this, Richard, everyone at the County is incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved. We all know how hard you’ve worked and the sacrifices you’ve made to reach this point – hopefully the next win follows soon! If you check out the archives of the SUGC podcast you can learn more about Richard’s progression through the ranks of the game and the role that County golf played.
We also spoke with former county player Alexi Glass, who is now studying at the Tournament Golf

Here’s to an exciting 2025 season ahead!
Gareth Shaw County Secretary, Staffordshire Union of Golf
Clubs
One of Staffordshire’s very own, Richard Mansell, has etched his name into DP World Tour history after claiming his maiden victory at the Porsche Singapore Classic.
It’s been quite the journey from learning the ropes as Staffordshire Junior Captain at Oxley Park and Beau Desert to lifting his first DP World Tour trophy at the 104th attempt.
After day one was wiped out following a monsoon in Singapore, Mansell carded a final-round
six-under 66, hitting five consecutive birdies between holes four and eight and making the turn with a two-shot advantage over the chasing pack. His first and only bogey of the round followed on the 10th, before gaining that shot back on the 13th.
He headed to the 18th level on score with clubhouse leader Keita
Nakajima, who had posted a bogey-free seven-under 65. However, the Staffordshire hero stood firm and two-putted from over 100 feet for a closing birdie to secure the title.
Speaking to Sky Sports after his victory, he said: “What a feeling. First week with a new caddie [David
Kenny], so that was a good start, and a couple of times he got me to slow down.
“It makes those near misses and when I’ve got ahead of myself in the past just kind of worth it, and it just means that much more.
“In 2022 I had quite a few close calls and didn’t get it done. Looking back on it, I probably should’ve kept doing what I was doing, and it probably would’ve happened a lot sooner.
“But I went searching, I tried to change, and I became quite good at pointing the finger, blaming other people for why it hadn’t happened. “I started just not enjoying it as much, and I got a little bit lost from where I’d actually come from. Ellie, my wife, has been so supportive. “It’s taken a lot of work these past six months. I’ve just had to stay patient and forget everyone else, and that was my main thing today — to focus on myself.
“Luckily, I had an opportunity on the last hole to hole a putt for the win,
and I managed to do it.
“It’s amazing. I’ve just been on the phone to my mum and dad and Ellie’s parents. So many people have supported me and believed in me when I stopped believing in myself.
“One thing I’d say to people trying to do it as a career — that moment is the most fulfilling thing in the world, and it’s worth it. So stick in, and hopefully, you’ll get rewarded one day like I have today.”
County Secretary Gareth Shaw commented: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see Richard winning his first DP World Tour event in Singapore. He was always a hard worker when he was coming through the County ranks, so we all know how much this means to him. He’s had some close calls over the last couple of years, so it’s great to see him get over the line. Hopefully, this is just the beginning, and his second follows shortly after!
This is also a great reminder to our aspiring professional golfers in the County ranks that if you put the hard work in, the results will come.”
J.O’K: I’m trying to stay away from setting handicap goals — especially with the new system, it’s tough to control. I’d love to win things, but you can play brilliantly and still lose. So I’m focusing on process goals. I want to improve my strokes gained on putting compared to a plus-one or plus-two handicap player — I’m currently about two shots behind that. The same goes for my wedge play. If I improve those areas, the results will come. Mentally, I think I’m strong — so if I approach each county match with the right mindset and stick to my process, I’ve done everything I can.
G.S: That’s such a good outlook. But has it been a journey to get there? Were you once focused on just chasing scratch?
J.O’K: 100%. For years, it was all about the handicap. I’d play every round thinking, “If I miss this putt, my handicap will go up.” It’s not healthy. I had a bit of an epiphany a few years ago. I’ve got a good friend, Liam Hopkins, who’s a psychologist at Salford City. We’ve talked a lot about controlling what you can control. Now, I focus on whether I’ve committed to my process. The outcome will take care of itself.
G.S: Love that. Switching to county golf — we’re so lucky to have you as county captain for 2025. Was that something you ever expected?
J.O’K: Honestly, no. I’d had conversations about second-team captaincy before. But this year, my goal was just to be a consistent member of the first team. So when Kev asked me, it was a huge surprise — but also an honour. I’m buzzing for it. I love leadership and communication, so I think I can do a good job.
G.S: What’s top of your wish list for this year as captain?
J.O’K: I want everyone to feel proud to be part of the county setup. I want it to feel like a privilege. On a match-to-match basis, I’m really focused on the mental side. Are we preparing properly? Are we following logical targets? Are we keeping our heads? If we can do that for 36 holes, we’ll win more often than not.
G.S: And having this home venue approach — what’s your take on that?
J.O’K: Absolutely buzzing! Especially with it being my home course. But more importantly, it gives us consistency. In the past, I’ve turned up to matches — even home ones — without seeing the course or knowing my foursomes partner. Now, we’ll practice in advance, know the course inside out, and that will give us a real advantage. We’ll also be passing on course knowledge — where not to go, how putts break — so everyone feels like it’s their home track.
G.S: How do we make it a fortress, somewhere teams dread coming to?
J.O’K: It starts with preparation. We’ll look at pin positions, tee boxes, course strategy — making sure our lads know exactly what to do. But more than that, I want us to have a reputation for grit and determination. I want other counties to see Staffordshire on the team sheet and think, “Here come the fighters.”
G.S: We’ve also brought in a selection committee and a longer-term planning approach. What are your thoughts on those steps?
J.O’K: Small changes, massive impact. Having a selection committee takes pressure off the captain and adds accountability. Knowing the team three weeks in advance allows players to prepare properly, play practice rounds with their partners, and show up ready. I’ve played about 15 county matches with 13 different foursomes partners — that says it all! This new approach will give us the consistency we need.
G.S: And we’re not afraid to try new things and pivot if needed.
J.O’K: Exactly. It’s trial and error. This year is about laying the foundations and seeing what works. In three to five years, who knows how far we can go?
G.S: And we’ve got so much young talent coming through — how excited are you about integrating them?
J.O’K: It’s amazing. The confidence these young players have is incredible. I didn’t even play golf as a teenager — I’d have been terrified playing county golf at 14! But lads like Lewis Foxall last year just stepped up and smashed it. They’ve got bright futures, and I’m excited to help them mature, build their games, and see how far they can go in the next few years.

Since the start of 2025, the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs has been dedicated to helping local golf clubs thrive through a range of support services, with a focus on course rating, social media strategies, marketing initiatives, and recruitment and retention efforts. Here’s a look at how we’ve been actively working alongside clubs to ensure they continue to grow and succeed in this evolving environment.
One of the key areas of focus for us this year has been course rating. The SUGC has supported clubs in ensuring that their course ratings are accurate and up-to-date, which is vital for players to have a fair and competitive experience. Our team has collaborated with clubs to facilitate the course rating process, providing guidance on the best practices and offering expert insights into how a course’s difficulty can be measured effectively.
By updating and maintaining course ratings, we’ve helped clubs offer the best possible golfing experience, whether players are competing at a high level or simply enjoying a social round. This focus on quality and accuracy contributes significantly to a club’s reputation and member satisfaction.
In today’s digital world, maintaining a strong social media presence is essential for engaging with both current members and potential new recruits. Over the course of 2025, we’ve been assisting clubs with their social media strategies to enhance visibility and communication.
From creating eye-catching graphics to developing tailored content plans, we’ve helped clubs increase their social media reach, fostering a vibrant online community. Through consistent posting, engaging content, and targeted advertising, we’ve seen clubs achieve improved engagement, creating a space for golfers to connect, share experiences, and stay updated on events and offers. This has been key in building a more connected golfing community across the region.
Marketing is another area where we’ve dedicated significant resources this year. The SUGC has supported clubs with promoting their events, services, and memberships through a variety of marketing initiatives.
We’ve helped clubs create compelling promotional materials, offering advice on how to highlight their unique features and attract new members. Whether it’s organising a promotional campaign for a new membership drive or assisting with event promotions, we’ve been there to ensure clubs have the marketing tools they need to succeed. By assisting clubs in building effective marketing strategies, we’ve helped to increase visibility and grow their member base, providing an important boost to club revenues and ensuring a stronger future for Staffordshire golf clubs.
Retention of existing members and recruitment of new ones remain crucial to the success of any golf club, and the SUGC has been at the forefront of efforts to help clubs grow their membership. We’ve worked directly with clubs to develop tailored strategies to recruit new golfers, whether through discounted memberships, open days, or youth development programs.
Additionally, we’ve focused on retention by offering support and advice on member engagement. From creating a welcoming club environment to providing ongoing communication and events that appeal to members, we’ve ensured clubs have the tools to keep their members active and satisfied. This approach has been instrumental in strengthening the long-term sustainability of Staffordshire clubs, ensuring they remain vibrant and engaging communities.
LOOKING AHEAD
As we move forward into 2025, the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs remains committed to supporting all of our affiliated clubs. We’ll continue to provide services that help improve the golfing experience for members, increase club visibility, and drive recruitment and retention. Through innovation, collaboration, and dedication, we’re ensuring that Staffordshire remains a thriving hub for golf, offering support at every step to ensure every club and player achieves their potential.
With the continued commitment of the SUGC and our partner clubs, we look forward to a year filled with growth, success, and, most importantly, a shared love for the game of golf.
The Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs is excited to announce a new collaboration with Shot Scope, a leader in golf technology, to produce a range of custom laser rangefinders tailored for Staffordshire golfers. This partnership presents a fantastic opportunity to offer high-quality, innovative products that enhance the game while promoting the county’s golfing identity.
Shot Scope has recently unveiled its latest laser rangefinder, the PRO X, a cutting-edge device that combines advanced technology with a unique customisation feature. Available in black or white, the PRO X allows golfers, clubs, and events to personalise the side plate with their own design, whether it be a club logo, team emblem, or bespoke artwork.
David Hunter, CEO of Shot Scope, expressed enthusiasm for the new release, stating, “No two golfers have the same swing, and now, with the customisable Shot Scope PRO X, neither will their rangefinders. We designed the PRO X building on the trusted functionality and features of our other innovative rangefinders, with the addition of giving golfers the choice of a design and style.
The PRO X is also a great option for golf clubs and events who want to add their branding to a rangefinder.”
This collaboration will allow SUGC to offer a branded version of the PRO X rangefinder, strengthening its presence on the course and providing Staffordshire golfers with a tool that enhances their game. The PRO X includes advanced features such as slope-adjusted yardages, rapid-fire detection, and target-lock vibration, ensuring precise distance measurement up to 800 yards. Additionally, the anti-slip rubber grip, strong built-in cart magnet, and durable travel case make it a reliable companion in all playing conditions.
By working with Shot Scope, SUGC continues to support player development and offer its members access to top-tier golf technology.
Gareth Shaw, County Secretary commented: “We’re excited about this latest collaboration with Shot Scope. We are really trying to focus on bringing on the best equipment partners to give our players every chance at success this season.
Rangefinders are becoming a key part of a golfer’s set up so to collaborate with one of the best in the business is fantastic for our players and the rest of the county set up.”
