Can You Rock Band In this issue, we have highlighted a local contest called “Can You Rock?”, in which contestants get to test their vocal skills in a live situation. Providing the backdrop is the Can You Rock? Band. This band is composed of some of the city’s top notch musicians from four of the most demanded groups in the city. These bands are Zannadoo!, The Flying Toasters, Living Proof, and Blonde Sonja.

Orvis Kirkman In his 19th year as an Indianapolis musician, Orvis is going strong. Aside from “can you rock”, some studio work and lessons, he is also involved an plays in the praise band at Heartland church.(Fishers) And he is the guitarist in what some say is Indy’s #1 party band “The Flying Toasters”. Sonja Meyer Sonja has been singing professionally with local area bands since 1992. Currently, she is a lead vocalist for BLONDE SONJA. She has had the honor of performing on local television

shows, Little Nashville Opry, many of Indy’s local hot spots and numerous fairs, festivals and public concerts throughout the community. She has had the privilege of doing studio work for various artists on a European CD. Her vocal range affords her the ability to sing just about every kind of music. But her favorite music to sing is definitely Rock N Roll. Her influences are Heart, Journey and Fleetwood Mac. Sonja is devoted to her family and spends every available minute with her husband and their three children. She also enjoys singing in her church and working on events with the PTA. Zanna Zanna grew up singing with her family, doing concerts all over the world. Then she started a band called the Starlettes, with her two sisters and brother. They played many popular local venues like The Vogue and Patio, and did a small tour of Africa. Zanna decided to pursue a career on her own, and started singing background vocals for Henry Lee Summer, and eventually

joined the Alligator Brothers. Zanna has opened up for Bon Jovi, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, Ray Charles, Joan Rivers, George Clinton, Otis Day and the Nights, and many more. She now has her own bands, Zannadoo! and Ribs-N-Bones. Michael Read Michael Read has been playing in bands since the late sixties. His band ROADMASTER had five albums on Mercury records and toured with ZZTop, Rush, and Blue Oyster Cult to name a few. He then played and toured with Mitch Ryder, the Turtles, and Henry Lee Summer. He played in the original Alligator Brothers until they called it quits and then teamed with Carl Storie for a few years. With the formation of Ribs and Bones, the move to Zannadoo was a natural. Michael has played on, produced, and written for several cds, ads, and videos and continues to enjoy performing and playing live music. Dave Donahoe David Donahoe is a seasoned guitarist, starting his career in church at the young age of 12 years old. His path continued throughout high school where he joined jazz band, often called on as a featured soloist. His senior

Musician of the Month year he also began teaching private guitar lessons, which he continues to do to this day. After graduating, music remained a full-time passion. Dave moved to Arlington, Texas and became a bass player for a working band. From Texas, he migrated to Hollywood, California and graduated (with honors) from The Musicians Institute. There he was chosen by faculty to be one of a few students to be featured on the school’s graduation album project, along with Frank Gambale of Chic Corea Fame. Dave finally made it back to his Indianapolis base and toured with several bands, namely Southwind, a Deer Creek award winning country band who went on to win TNN’s “Road to Nashville” talent series...a show with over a million viewers watching! From country to rock-nroll, Dave joined the ever popular Punch Judy and traveled the Midwest, which he thoroughly enjoyed. In 2005, however, he was smitten by love for Zannadoo! and all of its awesome talent and stage prowess. The opportunity was seized and he continues to amaze his fans and fellow band mates each night, rocking his axe with Zannadoo!

Phillip Powers Phillip Powers is a drummer/ percussionist from the Indianapolis area. He began playing music at the age of 8, starting out on piano, then guitar, and continued to dabble with multiple instruments and styles of music before ending up with drums during his teenage years. Upon graduating from high school, Phillip began teaching drum lessons and building live and studio experience with various bands and music styles from metal to hiphop to folk to rock, and everything in between. Phillip currently plays in Zannadoo! and Ribs-n-Bone.

Noblesville, Indiana. She was a Firebirds cheerleader in 2004, and has her undergraduate in Communication with a minor in Music. Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Anne is the newest member of Zanna-Doo! She enjoys travelling, and has been to Germany, Chez Republic, and Italy. The Can You Rock? Band is performing each Sunday night at the competition at Moon Dog Tavern until March 22nd. For more information on Can You Rock?, visit www.canyourock. com.

The Adventures of Indiana Joni

An Adventure in Shamrocks & Leprechauns “May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow and may trouble avoid you wherever you go!” This is one of my favorite Irish sayings and I can’t wait to toast with friends and celebrate great friendship every St. Patrick’s Day. Whether you speak slang, twang or something in between every March 17th is an opportunity to adopt a wee bit of a brogue and enjoy several great traditions of Ireland! Many traditions and symbols are associated with St. Patty’s Day and Ireland including Four-Leaf Clovers, Leprechauns, and lots o Green. If you find yourself looking over a four leaf clover remember that it’s a beauty rarely found in nature. The folklore of four-leaf clovers differs from that of Shamrocks due to the fact that there are no religious allusions associated with them. It’s believed that each leaf of a fourleaf clover represents something different: first is hope, the second is faith, the third is love, and the fourth is happiness. “For each petal on the shamrock, this brings a wish your way, good health, good luck, and happiness for today and everyday”. Just what does a mythical leprechaun look like and why are they so special? According to the picture on a box of Lucky Charms cereal they’re tricky and aloof. In certain storybooks these wee people tend to be dressed as shoemakers and pass the time mending the shoes of Irish Fairies. According to St. Patrick’s Day Parades, Shamrocks, and Leprechauns by Elaine Landau, the legend is that the fairies pay the leprechauns for their work with golden coins, which the little people collect in large pots of gold. Irish legend has it that if you’re lucky enough to capture a leprechaun, don’t take you’re eyes off him or he will surely vanish and so will your hopes of finding his treasure. “May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light, May good luck pursue you each morning and night”. So why do we all wear green for St. Patrick’s Day? Probably because you’ll be pinched if you don’t! School children actually started this tradition. Green is also the color of Spring, the shamrock, and is connected with hope and nature. Historically, green has been a color used in the flags of several revolutionary groups of Ireland and as a result it appears in the official tri-color country flag adopted in 1919. In addition to that, Ireland is often called the “Emerald Isle” due to the lush natural greenery. Maybe you’re heard the saying that “Ireland has 40 shades of green,” which is remarkable considering that it’s pretty far North.

Indy’s Finest | Jeanette Lee: Beauty, Billiards, and Brawn Jeanette Lee, known throughout the world as “The Black Widow,” has enjoyed one of the most illustrious careers in billiards history. Repeatedly recognized by Billiards Digest as one of the sport’s most powerful people, Lee has claimed more than 30 national and international titles. Formerly ranked as the #1 player in the world, she was named the “WPBA Sportsperson of the Year” in 1998 and has earned Player of the Year honors from both Billiards Digest and Pool & Billiards Magazine. In 2001, Jeanette was the Gold medalist for the United States at the World Games and has also captured Silver twice at the World Championships during her 14-year professional career. In 2004, Jeanette won the World Trick Shot Championships and BCA Open. In 2005 Jeanette won the China Invitational and more recently in 2007 won the World Team Cup, Empress Cup, and the International Skins Billiard Championship with her doubles partner and husband, George Breedlove. Born on July 9, 1971, Jeanette was raised in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of thirteen, Jeanette was diagnosed with scoliosis, a disorder in which there is a curve, often S-shaped or C-shaped, of the spine or backbone. To alleviate the progression of the debilitating condition, Jeanette underwent scoliosis surgery. The surgical procedure involved techniques to fuse or join the vertebrae along the curve of her spine. Metal rods and other instrumentation were attached to her spine in order to hold her vertebrae together during the months after her surgery while the bones in her spine eventually fused together. Such instrumentation was left in her body where they remain today. Scoliosis surgery is one of the longest and most complicated orthopedic surgical procedures performed on children due to the long operation time and hospitalization for recovery. Her surgery at the time was thought to be a success, but Jeanette’s affliction with scoliosis was not yet at an end. As an adolescent, Jeanette Lee excelled in scholastics and was accepted into the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. Jeanette expected to attend college and pursue a more conventional career after graduating high school. She completed two years of college while pursuing a Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Development and Elementary Education. However, around this time period in her young life, Jeanette discovered the game of pool, a discovery that would change the course of her life. Jeanette immersed

Jeanette Lee is currently hosting clinics. The clinics consist of two days for a total of 16 hours of instruction. The clinics are available for both Indiana residences and outof- towners. Clinics will be offered every six weeks. For more information on how to join one of these clinics, and be taught by billiards most recognized figure, call 917-355-9908.

herself in all facets of the game and began to practice pool incessantly; practicing up to ten hours a day. Additionally, Jeanette began studying literature on the game and even befriended “old-time” pool professionals. During this time of her billiards immersion, Jeanette suffered immensely from pain caused by the steel rods implanted in her back. Her intense pursuit to perfect her new passion consequently aggravated her spinal condition. Regardless, Jeanette relentlessly continued to exert herself physically and mentally. According to one account, she played pool consecutively for thirty-seven hours, to the point of unbearable pain, physical exhaustion, and literally had to be lifted and carried back home by her friends. In 1993, Jeanette’s hard work and unrelenting pursuit of excellence in the game of pool resulted in her professional debut at the age of 21. She turned pro as a full-time member of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) only three years after picking up the sport at age18. In only her first year as a pro, Lee rocketed into the ranks of the top ten in the WPBA. Less than two years later, at the age of 23, Lee was ranked the number one women’s professional pool player in the world. Jeanette Lee entered the professional pool world with fury. Her reputation grew to legendary proportions as the world came to know her as “The Black Widow,” a persona Lee acquired through her ability to overwhelm, almost devour, her opponents in combination with exclusively wearing black attire during tournaments. Lee’s first victory came in 1994 at the Baltimore Billiard Classic, the debut event of the WPBA season. Lee followed up her first professional title with another win at the tour’s next event, the Kasson Twin Cities Classic, and went on to claim two more titles at the BCA San Francisco Classic and U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. She capped off

her sophomore season with a win at the Connelly WPBA National Championships in the tour finale for five victories and was named “Player of the Year” by Billiards Digest. Lee’s success continued in 1995 as she captured titles at the Olhausen Los Angeles Classic and the Brunswick New York Classic, and was nominated by the WPBA for the “Sports Person of the Year” award; a nomination she would receive again in 1997, before winning the award in 1998. Jeanette would claim three more tour stops during the next

two seasons, winning the BCA Charlotte Classic in 1996 and posting back-to-back victories at the Hubler Cues Nashville Classic and the Olhausen San Diego Classic in 1997. Lee’s spectacular performance in 1997 earned her “Player of the Year” honors by Pool & Billiards Magazine. In 1998, Jeanette would post three more victories en route to being named the “WPBA Sportsperson of the Year.” She claimed another trio of wins during the 1999 season, including the Tournament of Champions. In 2001, Lee not only won the BCA Open Championship, but also took home the Gold medal for the United States at the 2001 World Games. Lee claimed the Tournament of Champions again in 2003 and added two more titles in 2004, with wins at the Cuetec Cues Florida Classic and the Women’s Trick Shot Magic World Championship. March 2009

Indy’s Finest | Jeanette Lee: Beauty, Billiards, and Brawn Yet, throughout Jeanette’s flourishing career and unprecedented success, she suffered from chronic pain, which stemmed from her scoliosis. By August 2005, Jeanette had undergone a total of nine surgeries to the back, neck, and shoulder. In spite of her medical challenges, Lee continues to achieve in the game of pool and other ventures outside of the pro billiards tour. She is celebrated as an inspiring leader and has served as the National Spokesperson for The Scoliosis Association, Inc. for the last decade. She also serves as a trustee or the Women’s Sports Foundation. Lee’s beautiful and deadly game, underscored through her nickname “The Black Widow,” has attracted attention away from the pool table as well. She has been featured on ESPN’s list of Sexiest Female Athletes in the World, in Esquire’s Ten Women We Love and among Aloette Cosmetics Dozen Most Attractive Women Athletes. Jeanette has made television appearances on Arli$$, Best Damn Sports Show Period, Entertainment Tonight, Extra!, Hard Copy, HBO Real Sports, Late Show with Craig Kilborn, Today, The Late Show with David Letterman and Live with Regis & Kelly. She was also featured in an ESPN SportsCenter commercial and made a cameo appearance in the Walt Disney Picture The Other Sister. The combination of Lee’s pool prowess, engaging personality, beauty and mystique has led to Lee’s renowned reputation as the most famous pool player of her generation. She is unmistakably a fan favorite and continues to dazzles audiences with her pool artistry and arsenal of trick shots. Golf Digest proclaims Lee “an absolute show stopper,” noting that “she was the star at our U.S. Open party filled with Donald Trump, Carson Daly and other celebrities.” Jeanette Lee currently resides in Indianapolis with her husband George Breedlove, a top ranked men’s pro billiards player and owner of Midwest Outdoor Products, their four year-old adopted daughter Cheyenne Lee Breedlove, whom they have had since her birth, and John Kang, a fifteen year-old New York native who they obtained legal guardianship over in February 2007. Midwest Balloon Rides

16

March 2009

Secrets of Indy

Did you know that you can drift the sky of Indianapolis in a hot air balloon? Well, you can. Midwest Balloon Rides started in 1989 by Commercial FFA Certified Lighter Than Air pilot Tony Sandlin. Tony usually flies out of Metro Airport in Fishers, Noblesville Highschool, or Geist Elementry. Because ballooning really depends on the way the wind is blowing, the departure point can change daily. The ballooning season is from June 1st through November 1st. Tony utilizes two different baskets (gondola’s) for rides. One that holds 2 people, and their most recent addition, a basket that holds 4 people. Ballooning is popular for engagements, anniversaries, or just a romantic flight. The flight only lasts one hour, but the who experience can last up to three. Purchased in August 2002, the Aerostar Rx8 hot air balloon was affectionately dubbed “Inflated Ego” in September 2003. Measuring 60 feet high and 56 feet wide, the envelope inflates to 90,000 cubic feet and includes a repeating pattern of seven colors. Corresponding colored pennants flap in the breeze and a blue scoop surrounds the dual burners that power the balloon. From those burners a six foot flame emits 12 million the entire system to BTU of heat causing become buoyant. Even though there are no age restrictions, you need to be tall enough to see over the rim of the basket to fly. The balloon flies anywhere between 2,000-5,000 feet depending on the wind and will travel an average of 8-10 miles per hour. Because technically you are riding on the wind, you travel as fast as the wind is blowing. With a flight, passengers receive a gift certificate (that never expires), a gift box, complete with miniature parachute men that you release at 2,000 feet and watch parachute to the ground, and a wine tote with champagne (to be used on the ground after the flight for the balloon toast). One of the newest rides Tony is offering is the PreDawn flight. This allows passengers to see the sunrise from the sky. For more information or to contact Tony at Midwest Balloon Rides you can contact them at 317-863-0318 or on the web at www.midwestballoonrides.com.

Secrets of Indy

Nestled discreetly in a cove on Geist Reservoir is the Indianapolis Sailing Club. People generally don’t think of Geist Reservoir as a big sailing lake, and boy are they wrong. Founded in 1955, the Indianapolis Sailing Club is situated on 13 acres. It was founded by a group of construction and manufacturing business owners with a passion for sailing. Through their contacts, they received permission to sail on the Reservoir by the water company. From an outsiders perspective, sailing is serene, peaceful, and slow- and it can be if that is what you want, but there is a complete other side to sailing that most outsiders don’t know about. Racing a sailboat inches from another sailboat can make any power boaters heart skip a beat. At the Indianapolis Sailing Club, they typically hold 2 races a week and 4 larger regattas throughout the year. On Wednesday nights during the season, the smaller boats race, and on Sundays, you can see the 80 larger boats compete for glory. The Indianapolis Sailing Club throughout the years has produced 23 national champions, and even 1 International Champion. Some other racers have went on to open ocean racing. The idea is of course to have fun out there racing, but it does get awfully competitive on the water, but after a day of racing it also becomes a social atmosphere. Dinners, concerts, shrimp boils, and other social events are common on the deck of the Sailing Club.

Indianapolis Sailing Club

The Junior Training program is designed for children from 8 to 14 years of age. The children are grouped according to age, weight and experience. They are placed in single- and double-handed craft for lots of on-the-water learning experience. The goal of the course is to develop an appreciation for sailing through rigorous FUN! The camp, for novices to advanced sailors, is designed to teach basic sailing techniques and water safety for the beginners and lead into racing techniques and water safety for the more advanced. The Club currently has Prams, Sunfish, Lasers and Flying Juniors for our aspiring sailors. We are currently expecting to run six one-week basic training courses. The basic training courses will be open to all levels of sailors. All classes will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, rain or shine. One of the most important aspects of the Indianapolis Sailing Club is safety. The club has multiple power boats ready to assist sailors with any problems they might encounter. If you are interested in seeing what it is all about, or just to watch the races from the 13 acre grounds, you can contact Michael Naughton at 317-582-1783 or visit the Indianapolis Sailing Club on the web at www.indianapolissailing.org. Tax Refund Ideas

Q A

What are some ideas on what to do with my 2008 tax refund?

In this market climate, it makes a lot of sense to be as wise as possible and make the decision in favor of what would be best in your current financial situation

There are so many options on what you could do with your 2008 tax refund, both positive and negative. In this market climate, it makes a lot of sense to be as wise as possible and make the decision in favor of what would be best in your current financial situation. Everyone’s situations are different and to make a positive choice for you and yours, please consider all of your options. In general, I recommend these top five: 1. Create or increase your emergency fund. If you do not have three to six months of living expenses in a savings account, your refund could give you a great start. If you already have about three months saved, it will just give you a better safety net and give you peace of mind. 2. Begin investing. Depending on your current goals and financial situation, this could prove an excellent opportunity to begin saving for a goal such as retirement. You could begin funding a vehicle like a Roth or Traditional IRA, or add to your current account. You will want to be sure to consider your own risk tolerance, specific investment goal and time horizon to find an investment that matches appropriately to all three. 3. Pay down current debts. Specifically those with the highest interest rate. In these times of uncertainty, paying down something such as a credit card, can give you financial freedom by giving you one less bill to pay each month. It also gives you some cushion in the unforeseen event that you would need to use the credit line again. Having a credit line to go to, though not ideal, is still better than dipping into retirement or investment savings. 4. Educate yourself. Putting money back into yourself through education is a lifetime investment. Whether it would help to advance your career or allow you to be marketable in a new career, looking into options on advancing your education might prove priceless. 5. Plan a vacation. If you have spent the time to evaluate your current financial situation and feel confident in where you stand with regards to savings and debt, then plan something fun! Spending quality time relaxing and rejuvenating either alone or with those you love can give us just the boost of positive energy we need right now. Also, memories are irreplaceable and unmatchable, so spend some quality time with the ones you love.

with their 840 runs, 200 chairlifts, 40 terrain parks and thousands of kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. From gentle slopes in the southern part of the state to highly rated resorts in the northern Lower Peninsula, and formidable verticals in the rugged Upper Peninsula, Michigan’s reputation as the top ski destination in the Midwest is well deserved. This is home to the U.S. National Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum, founded in 1954 in the Upper Peninsula city of Ishpeming, the “birthplace of organized skiing.” Michigan snowsports aren’t just for the experienced; many resorts and ski areas offer excellent ski and snowboard instruction for all ages. With special packages that include lodging and lift tickets there’s lots of incentive to hit the slopes or the trails before this ski season is just a Pure Michigan memory. Southern Lower Peninsula The state’s closest slopes to Chicago and Indianapolis are at Swiss Valley Ski Area in Jones, 17 miles north of the Indiana border. Northern Lower Peninsula The west/northwest corner of the Mitten is dotted with ski resorts, including Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. It’s Not All Downhill In addition to downhill skiing, many resorts have crosscountry trails (Garland Resort in Lewiston has 40 miles of groomed trails). Nordic skiers can go for a quiet glide along dozens of paths at state parks and forests including the linear, 34-mile Kal-Haven Trail between Kalamazoo and South Haven, and the VASA Pathway in the Pere Marquette State Forest. The 16.7-mile VASA is one of four connected trails in the Grand Traverse area system. The Hiawatha National Forest near Rapid River offers five loops through varied Upper Peninsula terrain, from ridges to low swampland. The scenery is spectacular along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore trails. Fashion Tip

Gas prices are down, airfares are discounted and nothing is stopping you from that ideal Spring Break trip except… what to pack. This spring almost anything goes as seen on the runways at the latest fashion shows. So what is going to make you stand out from the crowd, in a good way, on that crowded beach? We spoke with several future fashionistas at The Art Institute of Indianapolis to discover the must have items for your suitcase. Being students, they understand the need to stretch your dollars. But of course fashion comes first. Flip flops have been the “it” item of the past to cover your souls. This year students said put those in the back of the closet because gladiator sandals will be all the rage. These are a modern take on the sandals seen in the movie Gladiator with rich and elegant updated designs. “These sandals give more of a statement and can add more to a dull outfit, much better than flip flops can,” said Ashley Udell. Udell suggests checking out Bakers at Castleton Square Mall or Circle Center Mall. Amy Ward agrees with Udell’s pick of the sandals but would add wedges as well. “There are so many retailers that are already selling great sandals and wedges for spring. I think we are all ready for a change in the seasons...so let’s start it off right with a great pair of shoes!” Her store of choice would be Bakers (not only because she works there), Urban Outfitters or Aldo. Another hot item this spring is the long sun dress. They are out this year in every popular spring color such as canary yellow and vibrant green, blue and fuchsia. Samantha Zanker believes this is a must have for your spring wardrobe. “This is something I will be going out to get and the good news is I don’t have to break my bank to afford it. Target has them in every color you can imagine.” To further accessorize your outfits, the right shades are necessary. This year the bug-eyed glasses are making a comeback. Experts said this is a win-win for the wearer who besides making a fashion statement, provides extra shade from the UV rays. Macy Night just knows these are her next purchase. “The bug-eyed glasses are essential for your Spring break wardrobe, the final touch accessory and again something that is very affordable.” Night said Target is a great place to find these glasses. It is a great time to be shopping due to the economy. Check websites and flyers for sales. Stores are marking items well below the retail value making you not have to be paying for your spring wardrobe and trip well into the Fall.

The 87th Annual Indianapolis Home Show

As Indianapolis residents are looking for new and exciting ways to enjoy their homes and new backyards, the 2009 Indianapolis Home Show met the demands by offering an expanded show with a host of new features and exhibits, including an additional building in the South Pavillion of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This offered an additional 25,000 square feet devoted to landscaping and gardening, complete with an interactive outdoor stage. The Indianapolis Home show is the nation’s oldest and the Midwest’s largest home-fovued extravaganza, with more than 900 exhibits. Now in it’s 87th year, the Indianapolis Home show offers thousands of products, decorating, construction and modeling ideas for visitors to gather and compare. This year the “Centerpiece Home” was built by CP Morgan. This home was

fully constructed, decorated, and even landscaped inside the exposition hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The home, which consisted of 3,310 square feet and three bedrooms was completely outfitted with details and familyflexability that reflect CP Morgan’s desire to create homes that actually fit the way people live. CP Morgan was founded in 1983 and continues to work to provide more people with more home than they ever dreamed possible. Along with the CP Morgan “Centerpiece Home” there were many appearences by celebreties including Ty Pennington from Trading Spaces, Kate Gosselin, the mother of sextuplets, and Billiards own “Black Widow” Jeanette Lee. After this year’s show, we can not wait to see what the Indianapolis Home Show has in store for indy next year.

History The People’s Burn Foundation (PBF) was established as a nonprofit organization in 1997. The mission of the People’s Burn Foundation is to educate, provide support and advocacy services to those adversely affected by fire and burn injury. Della Hines, a burn survivor, founded PBF after she suffered the loss of two of her three children in a 1991 apartment fire. In memory of Della’s children, Nicholas and Mary, Della founded PBF. Beyond the highly acclaimed To Hell and Back national prevention initiatives for firefighters, PBF works on a grassroots level throughout the Midwest serving burn survivors and victims of fire loss. With a state-ofthe-art burn unit serving three states, PBF works with family members and burn survivors to preserve the emotional and financial integrity of the family during the long burn recovery process. The Foundation also provides emotional support services for burn survivors (adult and children); operates Brave Hearts’ camp, a one-week emotionally rehabilitative camp for burn survivors; and, offers a service known as Extinguish the Need to rehabilitate families following total fire loss, in tandem with service provided by the American Red Cross. Since PBF was founded in 1997, its network of burn survivors has grown from nine to more than 700. The People’s Burn Foundation is governed by a 15 member board of directors. Tony Walker is the current Board President. The People’s Burn Foundation is also experiencing a change in leadership. Erv Picha of Picha Solutions has contracted with PBF and is serving the organization as the interim Executive Director while assisting in the search for our new leader. Those interested in applying can visit our website at www. peoplesburnfoundation.org for a complete job description.

People’s Burn Foundation

Brave Hearts Burn Camp Della’s vision was to create the first burn camp in the state of Indiana, because there was no program that provided emotional healing opportunities for young burn survivors. With a small Board of Directors and a committed group of volunteers, PBF hosted the first burn camp for children in the state of Indiana in 1998. Nine children and 15 volunteers attended the one-week residential camp. Children who had never known other burn survivors, found courage and strength to overcome their scarring and disfigured bodies. Parents of the children all warned that they would not take off their clothes to go swimming. But, on the second day, there wasn’t a t-shirt worn at the lake. The children felt normal and secure. For the first time since their injuries, they were free from embarrassment, humiliation, or fear. They felt and learned unconditional love and acceptance. That one week changed the lives of all who attended and simultaneously encouraged PBF to extend its mission to raise awareness about the life long impact of severe burn injuries to motivate the practices of burn and fire safety --to prevent the injuries. In the time that has passed since that first camp, many of our Brave Heart Campers have grown into young adults who now return to camp as counselors for the younger campers. The counselors consist of adult burn survivors and firefighters from throughout the United States. Brave Hearts Camp will take place once again this year at Happy Hollow Camp in Nashville, IN on June 7 - 12, 2009. Volunteers and supplies are always needed to help make camp a great success. See next page for a list of supplies needed.

Extinguish the Need (ETN) Less than a year after the first Brave Hearts’ camp, a residential fire claimed the life of a 13-year old young girl, Christy Boles, and seriously burned her father. The day after, PBF received a call from the school administration asking that, “Somebody help the students through the tragedy.” The PBF objective was to comfort the students by explaining their help was necessary, but at the time, a person in grief was incapable of understanding the need for help. When they digested the circumstances of a mother grieving the loss of her only daughter, while praying for her husband’s survival, simultaneously planning a funeral, with no place to call home, the students moved to a different level of healing and altered their course to help in a way that would memorialize Christy’s life. With Christy in mind, they thought of offering aid and assistance to all people victimized by fire in her memory, which became a program known as Extinguish the Need (ETN). The objective for ETN was to insure that any family victimized by fire would have a place to go where they could replace all of their possessions free of charge, and simultaneously find the strength to begin the rebuilding process. In less than a month, students devised a plan for a citywide collection drive, identified a location to host the event (Howe High School), secured sponsors, and organized the event. One month later, their event would serve more than 40 fire victims in the city of Indianapolis. On that day, families entered a facility set-up like a department store where students were standing by to help them shop, free of charge, to replace their belongings. One family walked in with three children, none of which had shoes or coats --- their fire had been the night before. The students could still smell the smoke on the family. It was a surreal experience and it brought powerful meaning and even more determination to their mission. For the next three years, students at Broad Ripple High School organized and hosted the event, which lasted for

People’s Burn Foundation only seven days. Inevitably, when the event ended, there was a tragic apartment fire or house fire and, unfortunately, we could do nothing to assist those families. Many sponsors and community leaders recognized the significance of the Extinguish the Need program and encouraged students to nominate it for community service awards to generate public awareness about the needs of fire victims and show how ETN filled a “gap” in the social service arena. In its second year, the students nominated the program and it received 13 first place awards at the Kiwanis International annual convention, which brought the sought after attention and the possibility of creating a long-term program that would be open and operating any time fire struck. In 2003, the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust believed the program to be a necessary component for the community and granted the construction costs. Skinner Broadbent donated the space and the students realized their dream and cemented the life of Christy Boles in her community that would serve families for years to come. Opened in 2004 with the founders from Broad Ripple High School, the program has now served over 1,500 people who have lost their homes to fire and works in direct partnership with the American Red Cross and all Indiana fire departments.

Annual Fundraisers Tee It Up Golf Outing

Each summer the People’s Burn Foundation offers golfers the opportunity to hit the links for a good cause. The “Tee It Up Golf Outing” helps support Brave Hearts Camp. Last year’s outing raised more than $10,000 for camp. The planning committee is currently working out details for this year’s outing and more details will be posted on our website in the near future.

Summer Ice Gala

Each year the People’s Burn Foundation presents Summer Ice as a venue to celebrate firefighters and the work they do in our community and beyond. There is no other public venue other than fire department award ceremonies that publicly acknowledges the firefighters of this city. Proceeds from Summer Ice help offset operating overhead required to continue the nation presence of the Foundation. The evening also honors volunteers within our community who work to champion our mission throughout the year. This annual blacktie gala will take place on Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Silent auction items and corporate partners are always needed and appreciated at this event.

Other Needs PBF is out of space in its current facilities. The new office should allow the Foundation 10,000+ square feet to expand the ETN program, provide sufficient office space for all staff, and will also provide the necessary room for volunteers to provide support and assistance in community service. Our current locations are donated and ideally we are looking for a similar donation of space that would bring both operations under one roof. If you have any ideas in regards to this need, please contact interim PBF Executive Director Erv Picha at epicha@ peoplesburnfoundation.org. We are always looking for corporate sponsors to assist us in furthering our mission. If your company has in interest in one or all of our programs and fundraisers, we want to hear from you!

“People are the key to any company’s success, but I have focused on a couple of key elements to recruit, keep and develop associates.” 1. Recruit the right person for the job, where they can have a great career match, not just a 12 month contract. You need to think of profit last – not first. 2. As you grow bigger, establish key Team Leaders that really care about the associates and help establish a personal relationship for the associate with your company. This opens the door to better feedback and improvements for the company and associate. This also helps the associates maintain the small company feel that they enjoy. “We have spent a lot of time planning our infrastructure for growth and the challenges growth can create.” Establishing the right team leaders early is the first step in the continued growth for a company. You can not do everything yourself and continue to grow. It will take several years to develop your team leaders to reflect a consistent company vision, but the Clients and Associates will notice the results: High Morale, better communication, improved team work and better bottom line results for the Client – which in turn will provide more opportunities in the future. “Having the right support Staff for your Associates and Clients.”

Business Spotlight We have been extremely fortunate to work for clients that are very straight forward, have a clear vision of what they want, understand both sides of issues and help support our efforts in establishing effective teams. CSCI received an overall composite score of 97 out of 100 in a customer satisfaction survey completed by a 3rd party survey group. The toughest part of business is to not pursue work from clients who are not a great match for your company, but I believe this is a huge factor in your company’s efficiency and reputation.

Debra Magnuson has been our HR manager for almost 2 years and I still get compliments every month from our associates on what a wonderful job she does! That kind of support is so key in creating the right atmosphere for our associates. Lori Clyne is our new Operations Manager and has taken the same awesome attitude of supporting associates just as much as we would expect to support our clients. Eric and Brian Detty are the Dynamic Duo for our sales team. I could not think of anyone who has higher ethics when forming the right solutions for the customer. Their ability to develop long term relationships and following through with great solutions for our clients has been another key factor in our fast growth rate.

“The biggest challenge for a small business is to pick the RIGHT business partners.” We have spent a lot of time developing relationships with other companies that have a similar vision, loyalty and ethics. Our key partners are nothing short of phenomenal! Establishing trust and being able to understand each others long term goals is crucial in establishing a working relationship. Michele defines a good business partnership as “each partner is adding value to the relationship which results in mutual growth”. We continue to look for good partners locally for State and commercial opportunities. Being a “Women Owned Small Business” CSCI brings an immediate advantage to any state partner with a 5% price adjustment to their bid! “Another Challenge is to develop a relationship with the RIGHT clients.”

Michele states that positioning her company for the future is another key step that she spends a lot of time on:

Spend time with clients on their issues and develop the technical solutions that will help solve their long term challenges. Be willing to invest in people, certifications and education in order to be prepared for the next step in technology that will help your clients.

Business Spotlight “Understand where your Key growth areas are and start to develop your companies skill sets.” For CSCI the 5 year long term focus will be continued development in leading edge technology in Business Intelligence, E Portal and Security technologies.

Additionally, through KIBI, they have pledged their support to help with urban park rehabilitation, creation of green spaces within the city, and tree plantings. The CSCI associates have given well over $3000 in need gifts and supply to the Adopt a Family program which was lead by two of our Team Leaders, Jennifer Madden and Mary Kate Dohl. In summary, If you have Information Technology needs in your business, or looking for a great IT partnership, CSCI would be a great long term partner to help to meet your needs. They may be a small business, but they are positioned for big opportunities.

“Building the leadership that will assertively take on the clients future challenges and solutions is the final building block for continued growth.” One again we are back to the key effectiveness of Team Leaders that will continue to propel CSCI’s rapid growth.

While CSCI has extensive experience with government agencies, they are also poised to work with private organizations, to provide the same quality of services that the government expects.

CSCI promotes a business culture that encourages a commitment to helping people in need. Whatcha Got Cookin’

WhatchaCookin’ Got We are well into a new year and some important dates have already come and gone. We have seen MLK, Jr.’s day of service, the inauguration of our 44th president and Valentine’s Day to name a few. Although these days have past, I wish to speak, on a culinary basis, about Valentine’s Day. Being in the restaurant business I can safely say that Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days in the biz. Everyone seems to go out at some time around this day. Since this year it fell on a Saturday, the entire weekend was swamped with patrons. No matter what your marriage status is or isn’t, the day of love prompts people to eat out. So many people go out, in fact, that in my business we call it amateur night. This is because people who seldom ever go out to eat do so around this date. This brings me to the purpose of this article. Whether you are male or female, preparing a “special” dinner for two at your home can have lasting memories that far out-weigh booking a reservation at some eating establishment. Preparing this “special” meal can be a lot easier than you think. In months past, I have given tips like making stocks and adding unique ingredients to you recipes. This month I am going to focus my advice on making better the ingredients you already have at home. My favorite and most useful spot for ingredients in my kitchen is right inside my refrigerator door. The inside door of my refrigerator contains many things from the often used to the forgotten about. Small bottles of sauces, preserves, condiments and dressings line the inside of most doors. Many people don’t think of these ingredients until there is a direct need for them. That’s why they’re in the refrigerator door. These items are what I play with in every home-cooked meal. For example, ketchup can be “jazzed” up by adding some pineapple juice and chipotle peppers. Try that combination with grilled swordfish. Mayonnaise can be “doctored” up in just about every way imaginable. Mix it with lemon juice, fresh herbs and cream cheese and see what you get. Most

Condiments

people have honey and mustard to mix together or already buy it mixed. Add balsamic vinegar and apple juice to kick it up a notch. Preserves and jellies can be thinned out with fruit juices to make sweet and savory sauces for everything from lamb to poultry to seafood. I tend to buy many different salad dressings. I end up mixing two or three together to make something unique. Ranch will go with just about everything so I suggest mixing that with sun-dried tomato and Greek dressings, for example. Nowadays almost every variety of dressing can be found on supermarket shelves. I advise buying ones that complement one another. Roasted garlic/feta cheese dressing will mix very well with your basic Italian or French dressings. And I’m not just talking about mixing these items for salads. Add bread crumbs and use to baste foods in the oven like Cornish game hens, hams or roasts. Add to chicken or beef base for sauces. You can thin dressings out with vinegar and

oil and use as marinades. Use your imagination, the possibilities are endless. Another easy thing to have on hand is many different spice blends. Spice blends can be bought ready to use but I always mix my own. I have a spice mix, for example, for potatoes. Whether it’s mashed, roasted, scalloped or baked, I have a spice mix for them. Mixing herbs and spices correctly is based on one third tradition, one third experience and one third sheer luck. I encourage you to play around and find mixes that you like. So all this translates to the simple fact that you don’t have to be a chef to make a gourmet dinner for you and a loved one. Eating out can be done at any time so why not spend a special evening dining in? The thought will definitely be appreciated and long remembered… Maybe all the way to next Valentine’s Day!

Don Stuck

Can You Smell what

By Don Stuck II Don Stuck can be heard weekday mornings On X103 FM as the host of The Stuck In The Morning Program. Email comments or suggestions to donstuck@donstuck.com

I was born in 1963. So I’ve heard the old- “There will never be a black president in this county”- speech a few times. I have never believed it for a minute. Even around 1970 while watching re-runs on TV, Captain Kirk was forced by aliens to kiss LT Uhura. (A black female bridge officer on The Enterprise if you’re not a Star Trek nerd like me). Even people I knew to have no racists tendency’s whatsoever we’re having a fit. They could not believe this disgusting, near pornography was on their television. I guess I’m not racists because I would

46

have had Scotty beam me straight into Kirk’s place given the chance and I was only seven! No, I’ve never been to a Star Trek convention… yet. Never a black President? I have never believed it for a minute. One thing I have believed is everything I’ve heard Barack Obama say publicly. I may be naive because he IS a politician, but I just simply do. I trust him and that’s more than I can say for any other public figure throughout my life. Even more than my favorite all time President Ronald Regan. I trusted Regan but still felt like I was getting the political shell game when it came to some of his answers. I felt like he may not be telling the truth “all the time” but when he wasn’t it was for our own good. I was a bit younger then. I was born and raised in cornfield county Indiana so my neighborhood was not exactly what you would

call racially diverse. Even so, I thought the whole topic of race was blown way out of proportion. My father, Don Stuck SR, owned and operated the third largest independent oil company in the state, and sat on the board as vice president of a minority owned business as well. The owner (a black man) was one of his best friends. He was at our house, we we’re at his. Whites, blacks, hanging, chilling out at each others homes. It all seemed cool to me. I thought anyone complaining about race or being held back by the man was simply not trying hard enough. My eyes we’re not

Never a black President? I have never believed it for a minute.

This Won’t Take Long truly open until one day when I and a group of friends from the hood (the mean streets of Cornfield County) we’re all sitting around watching MTV of all things. It was our first look at cable television! A cool new rock band, In Living Colour, had just put out their first video. We all knew the song from the radio and this was some hard rocking band! These guys must be like us!! They rock hard! But we had yet to actually see the band. When it was reveled on screen before our very eyes that all the members of the band we’re black, you could hear a pin drop. The silence was finally interrupted when one young man said: “They rock pretty good for a bunch of black guys”. That statement was greeted with a chorus of agreements from the room.

That was actually a very forward thinking statement for that particular guy. From him, I would have expected nothing less that the threat of deportation for this rock band full of non whites! It was at that moment that I knew a lot of what I had read and heard about racism was true. Only I believe the deep thinkers of the day had missed the mark. It’s not the guys at the skin head rallies with swastikas on their arms that needed to be “brought around” for lack of a better term. They already have their minds made up. It’s the everyday man who may not realize who and what is around him or what is in his own mind for that matter that must be reached. Hate masked by the appearance of normalcy is well

disguised and in my option, truly the most dangerous form, for I was surrounded by the mixture and was not aware. The guy who made the statement heard around the world… not a bad guy. Probably just like me back then. Kind of young and raised where he was raised. Like a lot of us. The good thing is humans are pretty smart. They grow and learn. Hopefully the election of President Obama will put us on the path of truth, better self awareness and true permanent change. To me, he just seems one of us. As for a female President… well that will NEVER happen. Don’t believe that for a minute.

Pilates can

change your life! By Lindsay Berry, Certified Pilates Instructor & Expert

One of the biggest misconceptions about Pilates is that you have to be flexible and already in immaculate shape to do it. It’s no wonder that the public conceives this to be true because most all Pilates ads show skinny, ballerina-like women and buff, chiseledbodied men – all of whom are posing in some sort of distorted, just-notnormal, pretzel-like body pose. What the public never sees is the 100 pound overweight woman who can now pick herself up from the floor

and climb stairs with ease because she has been practicing Pilates for three months. Nor do they see the mid-to-late 60 year-old man who can now almost touch his toes because he has been doing Pilates twice a week for a month. The point is that Pilates is not just for the elite athlete or Circus Du Soleil protégée that we see in pictures all over the web or on DVD’s – it is for everyone. By no means are 100 percent of my clients doing these upside down/ inside out movements that you may see in pictures. In fact, only about 5 to 10 percent of my Plates clients are actually able to do such movements and, it is in this truth that lays the secret and beauty of the Pilates regime. What is Pilates? Pilates (Pa-lah-teez) is an exercise and body-conditioning program developed and practiced to simultaneously stretch, strengthen, tone and align the body. It is designed for all shapes and sizes, and for all fitness levels. Its sole purpose is to fit the needs of each individual person: “Come One, Come All,” should be the battle

cry for every Pilates studio because each exercise can be modified for the individual client. There is no jarring or weight-bearing movement, and it is gentle on the joints. There is absolutely no one person that is too “out of shape” or “too inflexible” or “to overweight” to perform Pilates. Pilates is actually ideal for someone who is just starting out an exercise program, as it will help build a base of core physical strength, enabling them to keep getting stronger, faster, and without hurting themselves or getting discouraged. Pilates is a very motivating and inspiring form of exercise that most people feel benefits from after just one session. The best piece of advice I can give any person wanting to do Pilates is, “Just try it!” When Joseph Pilates first invented his exercise method called “Contrology” during World War I, he was working as a nurse orderly caring for many war-wounded, bedridden

How Does Pilates Work? By targeting core muscles and building strength in smaller muscle groups than regular exercises alone, such as running and weightlifting. Plus, Pilates also stretches those tired and overused “superficial” muscles (your larger muscle groups). Think of your body as a machine: It cannot run unless well-oiled. Think of the oil as stretching: If you do not stretch properly, the machine cannot run smoothly and efficiently and will therefore be more likely to have kinks along the way. Think of the machine parts as your muscles: If you do not strengthen and build endurance for the parts, the machine cannot run to its full potential and it will “give out” quicker. And, last, but most important of all, think of all the parts that make up this machine: There are literally hundreds. Weightlifting/ running alone will target your largest muscle groups over and over and over again, leaving behind smaller muscle groups (a.k.a. your “core” muscles), meaning your “machine” will only be operating about half to three quarters of its full functioning ability. It is a fact that your body automatically uses larger muscle groups when exercising, so you have to learn to train and incorporate the smaller ones. Imagine if you could have every single part working in unison to run your “machine”. Think about it. And think about how Pilates can help.

patients when he designed extremely clever apparatus that allowed these immobilized servicemen to rehabilitate while lying on their back. The apparatus consisted of rigged springs (actual bed springs) with pulleys connected to plumbing pipe that were placed right above the hospital beds to provide assistance and resistance to patients so they could create “movement”.

Benefits of Pilates The resourcefulness and benefits of Pilates exercise is endless. Not only can Pilates improve the way your body looks and feels, but it can reduce stress, relieve tension, and boost energy. One of the most common reactions I see with all my clients is their look of amazement at how refreshed and revived and flexible they feel after their first session. It also can reduce anxiety and depression and actually help you to sleep better. It is not uncommon for my clients to say, “I slept better than I have in years” after just one session. Other benefits of Pilates are that it

heightens mental and neuromuscular coordination. It also increases range of motion, improves circulation and increases bone density, which is why it is great for aiding Osteoporosis. Pilates will help you create a stronger, more flexible spine while restoring postural alignment, which effectively reduces back, neck, hip, joint, and muscular pain caused by overuse, arthritis, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, and other problems.

Healthy Living | Pilates

Pilates for Pregnancy

Athletes Another popular way Pilates is being used today is for sports enhancement and core-strength and conditioning programs. Marathon Runners, Lacrosse Players, Cyclists…the list goes on. Athletes across the globe are discovering that Pilates is the key to better performance.

Many Pilates exercise can be used to benefit the expectant mother, enabling her to maintain good posture, alleviate some of the recurrent aches and pains, and become more aware of her changing body. It allows the mother to follow a safe and effective exercise program throughout the whole pregnancy – one that can be adapted to meet the current stage of her pregnancy and day to day energy levels for a healthy baby and you. Pilates for Pregnancy takes the original Pilates exercises and movements, and then modifies them as necessary for each stage of pregnancy. The focus is put upon postural changes, muscle training, and physical training in preparation for childbirth. Unlike other types of

exercise, you can start with Pilates at any stage of your pregnancy and still reap tremendous benefits. It also doesn’t matter if you haven’t trained with Pilates before. It is absolutely never too late to learn.

Pilates for Golfers

Yes, it’s true! There is an exercise regime that will actually make your golf game better – and also help you walk the golf course without feeling crippled or with an otherwise aching back. The ideal golf swing requires strength, flexibility, coordination and mental focus, along with core strength and stability. Pilates improves all of these aspects, simultaneously stretching and strengthening your back and waist muscles, loosening up the hips and legs, all the while creating a gird of strength from which your golf stroke generates. Pilates will help you hit the ball consistently farther and straighter, with reduced risk of injury and reduced back pain. In fact, a regular Pilates program has been shown to increase an individual’s golf swing speed by approximately 30 mph – and to remove four to six strokes off one’s handicap in approximately four months.

Healthy Living | Anti-Aging Medicine

Improving energy, mood, reducing body fat, improving muscle strength, and increasing libido are just some of the things we can do by replacing hormone deficiencies.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Separating FACT from FICTION By Dr. Eric Jones, M.D.

We’ve all heard the sayings, “40 is the new 30, or 50 is the new 40, or even 60 is the new 40”. Where have these new revelations come from? Well, there has been a recent movement to restore our hormone and nutritional balance to the levels seen when we were 25-30 years old. This anti-aging approach to medicine has been slowly growing over the past 10 years, and has really picked up steam in the past two to three years. Most believe this is due in part to the baby boomer generation entering the years where we see a decline in hormone levels and our nutritional balance being replaced by our society’s

52

March 2009

fast food , eat on the run, stressed out lifestyle. Celebrities, such as Suzanne Summers and Oprah Winfrey, have brought anti-aging medicine to the forefront for everyone to learn about, debate, and discuss. As a board certified Family Practice Physician and a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, that is exactly what I do on a daily basis – discuss with my patients everything that is associated with Anti-Aging Medicine – from bio-identical hormone testing and replacement, to specific nutritional testing and supplementation.

The biggest obstacle, by far, when discussing anti-aging medicine with a patient, is the belief that at some point during their lifespan they will come to a point where they do not feel as good as they want to because they are just “getting older” or experiencing “natural aging”. Those of us in the medical field who have embraced AntiAging Medicine testing and treatment programs, feel that what most consider “natural aging” is better described as hormone deficiencies and nutritional imbalances. As mentioned briefly on a recent Oprah show, when most doctors tell

you that your hormones are in the normal range, they mean that your hormones are in the normal range for someone YOUR AGE. This is important. Doctors who practice BHRT (Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy) compare your levels to optimal ranges, which is to say that we want to replace your hormones to the levels where they would have been at 25-35 years old before they started to drop and when you felt better than you do now. Studies show that doing this actually improves your quality of life and decreases your risk of disease and prolongs a healthy lifespan. An individual must have their hormones checked by a doctor versed in the field, or they will be led to believe that their hormones are normal when they are not. Additionally, hormones need to be in balance. Most physicians are not taught to balance hormones in their traditional training, so the concept does not even come into play in most physicians’ regular hormone evaluation. All my patients know the importance of balance for their bodies – and, with BHRT, we can replace hormone levels and bring hormones into balance, which is essential for health and wellbeing. There has been a lot of confusion about the safety of hormones over the past five years after the WHI (Women’s Health Initiative) results were published. The WHI study looked ONLY at PREMPRO (artificial

hormones derived from animal hormones) and did not look at BHRT. When hormones have been studied in the past, especially BHRT, they have been shown to be safe and to prevent disease. BHRT molecules have the exact same chemical structure as the hormones in our bodies. This is important because hormones and their receptors must fit together as a lock and a key do. If you do not have this “lock and key” fit, the hormones may cause unwanted effects. There is another confusion to clear up here regarding the word synthetic. BHRT is actually synthetic because all the word “synthetic” means is it is manufactured. BHRT is made from soy or yams and changed in a chemical lab (FDA approved labs) to bioidentical Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone. So instead of the distinction between synthetic and non synthetic, we prefer to use the term “bioidentical” and “non-bioidentical”. Once my patients are educated on hormone replacement and understand the history of animal vs. bioidentical hormones, the potential of what Anti-Aging Medicine can do for these people is almost limitless. Improving energy, mood, reducing body fat, improving muscle strength, and increasing libido are just some of the things we can do by replacing hormone deficiencies. And by testing at the beginning, and then also during treatment, we can follow protocols that keep the patient’s hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, human growth hormone, melatonin) at a level that will consistently keep the patient feeling as they did before their hormones started to decline. As mentioned before, there is a nutritional side to Anti-Aging Medicine as well. The obstacle

here is separating the late night infomercials and their claims, from true nutritional supplementation. To do that, we use one of the most comprehensive tests available that not only tests the end products of what we need for nutritional balance, but also the building blocks for the many enzymes and proteins our bodies use everyday. By approaching nutritional supplements this way, we can be sure to give our patients exactly what they need on a biochemical basis to fight inflammation, free radicals, and various other processes that contribute to “aging”. Overall, there must be an individualized plan to restore vitality. One size never fits all in Anti-Aging Medicine. We go through detailed hormone and nutritional testing, as well as a getting a detailed history from each patient. After that, our compounding pharmacists and nutritional supplement specialists are able to give each patient exactly what they need in their treatment plan. And, as with any Anti-Aging program, lifestyle changes, diet, and stress reduction play a key role in maintaining the program. Our particular program provides access to Pilates, yoga, massage, and nutritional specialists. At Advanced Medical Aesthetics, we believe that we have an Anti-Aging Program that allows us to treat our patients from the inside out – and that compliments the aesthetic procedures done at our MedSpa facility, which are geared to treat from the outside in.

Healthy Living | Fad Diets

Curb those cravings without fad diets and pills by Bryan Bingham, D.C.

For most of us, each day is a battle of wills, yours versus the vending machine. Two o’clock roles around you start to feel a little tired and groggy and then you begin to feel the need for something sweet. It might not be so bad if one small treat would do the trick, but it doesn’t. One leads to two, leads to three, which leads to getting your entire recommended days worth of calories from a vending machine. Does this sound like a typical day at the office? If you experience this rollercoaster of cravings you might be feeling that there is no way to beat the vending machine,

but there is and you can do it without signing up for a fad diet. Lets face it, diets don’t work. Study after study has shown diets to be ineffective in keeping weight off in the long term. They do have success in the short term, but often times they are so regimented that it is difficult to imagine spending the rest of your life adhering to the rules. So, what does work? Lifestyle modification has been shown to be the only effective way to keep weight off in the log term. In this article I am going to discuss one lifestyle modification that you can make which will help curb those 2:00 pm cravings and reach your desired weight. First we need to understand why

we crave sweets in the first place. Cravings are a signal that our body needs something, or thinks that it needs something. Your body is telling you it needs sugar because your blood sugar has dropped to level that is below ideal. You might be wondering how you could have low blood sugar considering that you had a waffle and three cokes for lunch. Shortly after your waffle lunch, your blood sugar was very high and your body knew that it had to act quickly to lower the sugar in your blood. So, it started looking for a place to store all this sugar and what better place than fat cells. The body does such a good job storing the sugar in fat cells that there is a quick drop in blood sugar which

causes your body to once again go on alert and tell your that more sugar is needed and your off to the vending machine. How do we prevent this blood sugar rollercoaster ride before it starts? Eating foods that don’t cause a large spike in blood sugar will subsequently prevent the large dip that sends you looking for treats. To determine which foods will prevent this rollercoaster we can use the Glycemic Index (GI). The Glycemic Index is a measure of how a food will cause your body to react when ingested. Each food is given a score from 0-100 where 0 would be no effect on blood sugar and 100 would be similar to eating straight sugar. Foods at the high end of the scale such at white bread have a score of 95, where foods at the low end of the scale like apples have a

score of 38. You might be wondering how bread can have a larger effect on blood sugar than an apple, which is obviously sweeter. For this article I am not going to go into the details of scoring but suggest that you visit www. glycemicindex.com where you can get a more in depth understand of the system and also enter specific foods into their data base to learn their score. The Glycemic Index is not intended to be a magic bullet, it is intended to help us make better food choices so we can maintain a healthy weight and have sustained energy without the mid-

afternoon sugar crashes. In order to feel our best we need to look at all of our daily activities, but this can be daunting, so take one change at a time. Once you

If you experience this rollercoaster of cravings you might be feeling that there is no way to beat the vending machine, but there is and you can do it without signing up for a fad diet. start feeling better from your lifestyle modification you will become addicted to how good you feel and you will want to improve some of those other areas in no time.

Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show

The Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport, and Travel Show The Ford 55th annual Indianapolis Boat, Sport, and Travel show is the largest indoor event of it’s kind in the nation. This year was bigger and better than ever with over 600 exhibitors, the Sports Show offered outdoor enthusiasts the widest selection of products and services – from canoes to cruisers, tents to RV’s, tourism to hunting and fishing, and much more. If you were in the market for a recreational vehicle, boat, or anything

else that had to do with travel, then the Indiana State Fairground was your place to be between February 20-March 1st.

Vacation Planning:

Vacation destinations from around the state and beyond gathered at the show, as well as tourism associations and convention and visitor bureaus. Over 22 states from Alaska to Florida were represented.

Fishing:

Tackle Town USA was a fisherman’s mecca. Complete with 4000 gallon tank, filled with monster bass, you

could shop for tackle, learn the latest techniques, and see your favorite baits in action in the Bass Tub.

Boating and RV Enthusiasts:

The massive inventory of boats and RV’s was almost overwhelming. The boats filled the Marsh Pavilion and the selection was endless. If you were in the market for a canoe or a luxury cruiser, you could find it there. The RV selection was no different. Everything from pop-up’s to luxury busses were available. There was an overwhelming amount of exhibitors offering every service of product you could think of at the 2009 Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport, and Travel Show. Make sure you plan on attending next year.

At the Indy Boat Show, you could get up close with all sorts of boats and RV’s
