Juror’s Statement

Sippel is represented by Gruen Galleries in Chicago and his work is in numerous public and corporate collections on four continents, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Paris, France, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Art, Washington DC.

Leandra Spangler presents ROW, ROW, ROW an installation of 781 paper rowboats hung in columns from the ceiling by MoFA artist Leandra Spangler. Constructed from layers of paper, each boat is unique and individually named. It is a work in progress.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as juror for the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s exhibit entitled Piece of Paper. I have enjoyed seeing the works of so many artists, and thank everyone who entered this artistic forum. It is important for artists to test their works in this way, and to see their art in context to others. It was a challenge to fit together works while considering the parameters of the interesting theme of works on/of/ about paper. Now, we have a truly interesting and beautiful selection of works to compare and consider in this light. I could literally “play with paper” to shape this show, and selected pieces which both honor the material and examine how paper is considered beyond being a neutral carrier of image. Many reflect the empty spaces where paper becomes part of the spatial construct inside the image, or the unusual margins offered. The materialness of paper lends itself to various manipulations. Collage, sewing, folding, and created structures are used. Artists are inherently attracted to the idea of paper’s fragility, it’s translucency, and it’s absorbent nature to capture stains, inks, and wax. They bring ideas that allude to and reverse paper’s tenuous state and the intent of paper, treating it as durable, sculptural, or presenting paper in out-of-context ways. Others work to emphasize this ephemeral nature of paper through its ubiquitous repetitive use and the quantities of sheets generated, reminding us of our own relationship to paper which we daily throw away as part of the detritus of living. Finally, viewers are charged to see the interrelationships between works by different artists where something flows between, as there are commonalities in the air and in our time. The versatility of paper as a medium to affect content surely is the message here. Seeing and speculating on the way and why is the task of the viewers. Karen Kunc UNL Cather Professor of Art
