In 1861, six Christian Brothers arrived in Buffalo to educate young men. From those first days, St. Joe’s, the region’s oldest college prep school for boys and the largest private high school in Western New York, has provided an outstanding education shaped by its Lasallian Catholic heritage to thousands of students.
Lasallians follow the vision of St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and patron saint of teachers. St. La Salle transformed education by prioritizing the student-teacher relationship, care for the whole person, and quality education for all. St. Joe’s Lasallian education focuses on Catholic values, personal relationships, and academic excellence.
What started with six Brothers’ vision in Buffalo has now become the St. Joe’s Community of Excellence: an innovative college-prep school with over 160 years of tradition.
St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute transforms the lives of students from diverse backgrounds through academic excellence and care for the whole person in a respectful, Lasallian Catholic community, developing each student’s unique talents in preparation for college and life.

Instead of traditional study halls, students are encouraged to advocate for their own academic growth and success by receiving extra support during their free periods in Academic Centers. Students are able to elevate their academic success in the subject areas of Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Modern Languages by spending one-on-one time with faculty in a collaborative environment. Beyond Academic Centers, the Academic Enrichment Centers provides students with additional academic assistance and helps students develop metacognitive strategies that will help them succeed in high school, college, and beyond. The 2024-2025 school year at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute will feature a new bell schedule designed to maximize student learning and engagement. This change, developed through extensive research, reflects the innovative spirit of our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle.
In 2019, St. Joe’s shifted from the New York State Regents Program to a new college-prep curriculum, emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, along with performance-based assessments. Building on this, the new schedule will transition the school day from nine 37-minute periods to longer, uninterrupted class periods of five 56-minute periods, reducing classroom transitions and fostering deeper and more meaningful learning. For each course once during the 10-day cycle, students will have an 86 minute class. This extra 30 minutes will allow our faculty to ensure each student has regular access to personalized classroom support.
The new schedule includes a 15-minute all-school break and a rotating class structure, ensuring balanced learning throughout the day. Additionally, community time will be introduced every week for mission-based activities, enhancing the sense of Brotherhood, integrity, and faith among students.

“The culture at St. Joe’s encourages each student to pursue their own path and to respect the path of others. I found myself challenged in the classroom and on the basketball court. This instilled in me the importance of taking pride in your work ethic, perseverance, and being passionate about achieving the goals you have set for yourself. By the time you graduate, you realize the education you received stretched far beyond the classroom. When I left St. Joe’s I was confident I had the foundation to achieve my goals, and I was motivated to make sure those goals would have a positive impact on others.
Now, almost twenty years later, I still reflect on the values I learned at SJCI every day. I have been in many communities throughout my education and training. None have had a greater impact on my character and development than St. Joe’s has. I will always be proud and thankful to be a Marauder!”
