DESCRIPTION As it is analyzed in “form finding” diagram, the model is a “minimal surface”. This term is used because these surfaces originally arose as surfaces that minimized total 戀愀猀椀挀 surface 氀椀渀攀猀 area subject to some constraints.

Rhino and Grasshopper was utilized for the analysis and 䤀倀䔀匀 䤀一 䜀刀䄀匀匀䠀伀倀倀䔀刀 dicomposion of the surfaces into stripes. Additionaly, “ears” were special designed for the connecting holes 䄀一䄀䰀夀娀䤀一䜀 䤀一 匀吀刀䤀倀䔀匀 䤀一 䜀刀䄀匀匀䠀伀倀倀䔀刀 and these were adjusted to each stripe in Grasshopper.

These stripes were used to assemble the model while 戀愀猀椀挀 bolts and screws were used to keep the stripes together. 猀甀爀昀愀挀攀猀

The house is located in a mountainous area, which justifies the need of privacy thus the abundance of openings. The basic synthetic idea is the relationship created between the triangular units.

On the north side, the building is a part of the nature as it takes the form of an underground “cave”, where the entrance is. The wooden part of the building is expanding to the south and the sun light, so the living spaces adopt a cozy atmosphere. The triangular wooden masses of the house indicate a contrast with the sloping rocky terrain and them. However, they are not expanding allover the sloping site, trying to interact with the environment without alienating it, allowing it intact with large green areas.

Interiors are provided by plenty of natural light from the large and multiple openings arranged on two or even three storey-levels. A careful management of the opening design was a try to smoothly light integration into all facades through a material by varying the rhythmic pattern. This creates “camouflaged” openings which creates

interesting lighting games in the interior.

The use of pure concrete and stone surfaces contrasts with the wooden surfaces which creates aesthetic and functional balances as the latter accommodate the living areas while the concrete-stone "cave" accommodates the main corridor.

Interesting still is the underground entrance to the building where it provides an atmosperic cave feeling, while, a framing view appears entering the residence.

The organization of spaces on the ground floor level is pretty clear as each mass accommodates a different use. The main concrete wall-surface is the diversification of public and private spaces. In this axis, the two most common functions (living room - dining room, kitchen and WC) are placed to the west side and the most private areas (bedroom, library, bathroom) to the east.

The interior design creates an interesting feeling, due to the alternative use of nonmonotony materials, as well as the clear handling of movements and functionality.

Shelter / Observatory Delta of Axios river | 2016

The centerpiece of the shelter design is a free-standing roof, expanding horizontally, with no vertical lines, like the creatures of nature. This is a try to fit the building into the tranquil landscape and make it no stranger to the nature at all. However, our goal is not a creation of a building that would subdue the landscape trying to imitate it but a building that would adapt to it while still retaining its architectural identity. Thus dynamic lines, gradients and simillar shapes are chosen. Still, the roof forms the exterior walls of the building, resembling it with a “cloth” that “falls” and accomodates the spaces needed to meet the shelter’s facilities.

Initially, there were three categories covering the needs mentioned above: one contained dining, entertainment, study, storage room (public areas), another for sanitation, rest (private areas) and a last one for an outdoor covered seating area that could be used by passersby as well. However, the separation of the building areas into two different zones was not maintained and thus the two merged into a single one building.

The final roof forms a building hanging from two clear points, which are also highlighted in the plan, open to the south with large openings and closed to the north for protection from the strong winds (a common thing in the area). The auxiliary construction was modified to provide two senarios: the one is a barrier to the north wind as a shelter during the winter months and the other one as an open - air sitting area for the summer months.

The roof is coated with titanium zinc, while the walls and floors are covered by wood as a tranditional technic of the area. The north and east sides of the building covered by gravel, while on the rest of the exteriors there are decks that are used for better defining the exterior gathering spaces. It was prefered to avoid large interventions in the surrounding area (such as plant of tall vegetation) in order to keep the landscape as intact as possible.

south view east view plan The entrance is placed in a covered and well protected (from the north wind) area, in the middle of the building.

So, the zone of day activities (living, dining, work) is clearly separated from the sleeping zone, while this indicates the movement into the spaces. The common areas (living room, dining area, study area) are placed at the south side due to the sun light and the view. In the study area, a large window with vertical blinds is placed to avoid the phenomenon of blurring. In the living room, the roof take a two-storey high, fact that sympolises it the most extravagant part of the synthesis. The kitchen and toilets are placed at the north side with small openings, while the bedroom area at the east side away from daytime activities and close to the entrance. Roof windows serve privacy of this areas. The placement of glass-brick windows and the modification of the deck (gravel) are also taken into account for the privacy again.

International Competition: Office Complex | 2019

This proposal seeks to create an iconic building through its morphological differentiation in relation to the existing buildings of the area. However, it is also attempted to connect it both to the oldest building of the company and to the wider urban environment. For this reason, an elliptical shape is chosen to form a loop.

The loop is reinforced by liftings that are determined by the geometry of the building blocks in proximity to the site, which means they rise according to the height of the latest. This creates a distinct geometry in the area that respects the existing scale of the region and wishes to have a dialogue with it. Furthermore, a large atrium is chosen as a basic element of the composition and central core of the building, a typology that also converses with that of the German building blocks. Meanwhile, the main entrance to the building is on its south side, in order to

create a common square with the existing building of the company and to emphasize the coexistence of these two sites in the area.

As stated, the main objective of the proposal is to create an iconic building that will house the office building of the future. It was therefore necessary to acquire both an overtly local character and open to the local community, forming an integral part of it and encouraging the public accommodation throughout the day. For this reason, it incorporates public and semi-public uses on the ground and first floor, and a large open lobby, promoting the image of the company to the public. In particular, on the ground floor there are shops, as well as an exhibition space and a library that both unfold on the first floor too, which also houses a co-working space, amphitheater and the company’s archive.

The upper floors serve purely office use while on the 5th and 6th floor there are service spaces for the employees of the company, such as a kindergarten, gym, relaxation areas, restaurant and cafĂŠ. Due to the great complexity of the building program, the organization of the floor plans follows a simple and clear logic to allow direct user orientation in the area, enhancing the sense of intimacy and security. Regarding the organization of the workspaces, this is done in bands, from the most formal areas, to informal offices and relaxation areas, with this transition being gradually and radial from the outermost parts of the floor inside the atrium.

The connection of these spaces is fluid and flexible allowing the integration of one space into the other and creating more relaxed boundaries between them. This promotes the sense of community and coexistence in the working environment and encourages the casual and continuous meetings.

Regarding the treatment of the façades, in order to emphasize the special geometry of the building and to preserve it as uniform as possible, more gentle manipulations were chosen, creating a visual correlation with the interior.

Specifically, the most public floors are surrounded by u-glass, while the others use horizontal metal blinds.

Overall, this proposal seeks to satisfy all the needs of a demanding office-building program, by incorporating modern and alternative approaches through both the morphological and functional operations analyzed.

Redifining school environment | 2019

The particular diploma project is based on my diploma thesis “The importance of Physical and Digital Spaces in Educational Environments; Influences from recent educational theories and practices” which tries to redefine the type of school environment, because classrooms cannot cover the new educational needs so this leads to ineffectiveness.

Trying to recall my memories from my school age, I was feeling but I cannot completely understand that the traditional type of school was problematic. Therefore, in combination with the research mentioned above, the primary school in Mesimeri village of Thessaloniki was selected as a case study. The analysis of that school named the problems and the strength of the area, so the project could end up with a proposal of a contemporary school in which practices and technology can meet.

Technology tends to attract users’ attention, by adding an intense lively experience and active learning through interactive systems by improving children’s engagement levels in learning processes using Virtual and Augmented Reality systems. Their implementation requires a specially designed area to support the active spatial experience of the user in conditions and spaces of greater freedom “without limits”.

The design of the redefined classroom begins with the analysis of the classroom in the light of constructivist pedagogy that uses games, movement, freedom and the use of technology. Generally, the educational space is trying to combine mainly the formal educational process with the informal one. The latter includes gaming activities, either conventionally or using systems such as AR and VR. These two types of teaching are integrated into a single spatial context by adding the nature which can be part of the educational process and shape environmental consciousness of the people.

As for the particular site, the main building is maintained but its use is changed.

Specifically, the classrooms, which occupy solely the interior of the building, are moved out of it and formed as independent units, while the interior of the building is designated as a multipurpose space (exhibition, restaurant, stage, etc.). At the same time, the use of the swimming pool is added to the building complex.

The ”Outside the Box” title shows the passion for creative and more imaginative modern classrooms. At the same time, it marks a change in the character of the imposing old school building, moving “out” of the classroom, but maintaining its presence as a reminder of the change. Finally, the school facilities can be used by all residents of the area due to its strategic location. The swimming pool, the old main building as a multipurpose space and the farming “open” the school boundaries to the community.
