From our Cornwall Councillor Dear Resident, School Parking There is an ongoing issue with parking at St Day and Carharrack Community School; no one should be driving along this narrow road to the school gate or car parking area unless you have been issued with a permit from the school or you are one of the few residents who live down this road. This scheme was introduced for the safety of parents and children and has been working relatively well up until now. The police have recently been to the school to help with the enforcement of this parking restriction and have in some cases been confronted by angry parents who disappointedly refuse to take any notice.

I will be meeting with the Head Teacher and the police to help resolve this problem; the permit system has worked well in the past, what we need to do now is to educate the parents who are causing the problem.

Litter I have received some complaints about litter, especially on the day of the refuse collection.

Some people are putting out their rubbish bags the night before leading to the black bags being ripped open by wildlife. I have made the contractors aware of this and they have had to spend a considerable amount of time clearing up all the mess. They will be monitoring the area and sending enforcement letters to those properties where there is evidence that bags have been attacked by birds or other animals. This will

outline the householders’ responsibilities for protecting waste up until the time it is collected by the Cornwall Council and also the availability of reusable animal proof bags available from Council One Stop Shops for £3.50.

If residents continue to allow their bags to be attacked, then the evidence will be forwarded to the Enforcement Officer, with a view to more formal action being taken and potentially issuing fixed penalties to offenders.

Fly tipping This continues to be a problem and the reported cases on Cornwall Council owned land in the St Day area have increased by over 40% following the new charges that were introduced at the Household Wastes Recycling Centres 12 months ago. There is a mine shaft just outside St Day which is over 600 feet deep and which is now almost full of tyres and other rubbish; it is a real worry that once this is full where will the fly tippers go next.

Events On the 1st of October I was the auctioneer at the Cornish Arms at Frogpool Harvest Festival. The evening raised £730 for the Merlin MS Centre, so thank you to all of you who came along to support such a good charity.

ST DAY CRICKET CLUB REPORT FOR 2015 SEASON

At the start of the season we thought that we would struggle to get a team together but with new players found to help us out and even some of our older players being called out of semi-retirement we managed to get a team out each week.

We started off with a few lost games at the beginning of the season when it is always a struggle because some of the players are still involved in football games until the end of their season. But once we got into the swing of things and had a good established side we managed to win eight games in a row which at that point put us second in our division. By the end of the season however we ended up mid-table which was a good achievement. We won 12 games and lost 8 with only 2 games being rained off so we must have had quite a good summer after all!

I must say a big thank you to all the background team who help so much to keep our cricket club together each year including our groundsmen. Also special thanks must go to Peter and Angela Smith, Peter scores at all the home games and puts the averages together and Angela scores for the away games.

For the home games Angela organises the Cricket Teas along with her band of “happy lady helpers”. You certainly don’t need the British Bake Off with these ladies around they must produce the best Teas in the league!

Well done to all players and helpers and thank you to our committed supporters who cheer us along each week. Below are the averages for this year.

Parish Council News

The Parish Council normally meets on the second Monday of each month, (except in August), at 7:00pm in the Community Room in Mills St. There is car parking available in Barracks Lane.

The meetings are open to the public (unless an item has to be taken in private) and agenda item 3 is always for public participation (limited to 15 minutes). It is sometimes necessary to arrange extra meetings, often concerning planning applications. Notices of all the meetings are displayed on the notice board at least 3 days before a meeting. We welcome local businessman Craig Williams to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Sandy Hatcher. Unlike some local parishes we have sufficient interest from residents to be able to fill all our vacancies and we are grateful to the unsuccessful applicants and hope that they will put their names forward when there is a vacancy in the future.

Remembrance Sunday. The annual service will start with the procession led

by Carharrack and St. Day Silver Band from the Parish Church at 10:45 to the War Memorial. Please come and remember those who gave their lives in two World Wars.

Budget and Paperless Planning The Parish Council has to prepare its annual budget by the end of December to send to Cornwall Council for them to calculate the Council Tax for the financial year starting in April. Our big problem is not knowing which services Cornwall Council may be discontinuing and then having to decide if the parish wishes to take them on when we have not budgeted for them. We have just heard that C.C. may be cutting back on

the amount they give us to maintain footpaths next year.

In July we were told that Cornwall Council would not be sending us paper copies of planning applications after 1st September. A decision, which C.C. made the previous November but which was not communicated to the parishes. Unlike many parishes all our councillors have internet connections so can view applications at home, but in many cases the application will need to be discussed at our meetings and we shall therefore need to project the plans onto a wall or screen. We are fortunate that in the Mills Street Community Room we have access to the internet but will need to at least purchase a projector and possibly a laptop. Those who have viewed planning applications online will realise that the set up is not very user friendly, often text is very small on a monitor screen and it is impossible to view 2 or more plans side by side for comparison. C.C. has also said we should not rely on using it live at a meeting, which will necessitate the Clerk having to download it prior to the (Continued on page 13) 9

After protests by many parishes the implementation has been postponed to 1st January or 1st April and C.C. will contribute £700 to each of the 213 parishes to cover their costs. C.C. claims this change will save them about £100,000 per year (a figure which has not been substantiated and has been disputed) in office time, printing costs and postage as they say most applications are now received in digital form, rather than on paper.

Electricity Supply. We have asked Western Power for reassurance that supplies can be maintained over the winter if the substation in Telegraph St, which has been removed because of subsidence, is not replaced. Western Power says there should be no problems.

Milestones. Residents may have noticed that the two milestones on the B3298, which are ‘listed’ and date from when the road was classified as a main road to Scorrier Station in 1892, have been cleaned and repainted. A volunteer from the Milestones Society did this work. The Parish Council has agreed to give them an annual clean.

Defibrillator. See separate item for the latest news.

Letter Box. The letterbox at Tolgullow is now repaired. Please make use of it.

Chemist’s Shop. There is nothing to report, other than that the doctors are going to appeal the decision to allow the pharmacy.

Housing. We understand from the planning consultants that a planning application is to be submitted for housing and a doctors surgery in Telegraph Hill but the builders want to carry out further exploratory work on the old mine workings.

The Parish Council has been consulted by a firm of builders about a mixed development of affordable and open market housing in Vicarage Hill. The build-

ers have promised to incorporate in their application a number of points put forward by councillors.

An agent came to the October meeting with the outline of a scheme to build 8 houses opposite the football pitch in Tolcarne Road.

We await formal planning applications for all 3 of the schemes Weeding. The Parish Council is expecting to get the services of people on Community Service Orders to clear weeds from pavements etc., next year.

Town Clock. The structure is drying out and the inside will be repointed in the New Year and the clock mechanism and hands replaced.

By the time you read this we will have had the opportunity to see the “Around the Clock” presentation organised by the “Daylight Group” and its many helpers. This event was organised as part of the Heritage Lottery Funding for the renovation of the clock. Our thanks go to all those who have worked so hard on this project. How many other villages could put on such an event?

Hedge Trimming. Residents are reminded of their duty to keep hedges trimmed so they are not impeding pedestrians on pavements or traffic on the roadway.

Rubbish Collection. Residents are reminded that they are responsible for their rubbish until it is collected. If the bags become broken and the contents scattered they are responsible and people in Helston have been fined when bags have been broken open by birds or animals.

Litter Pick, Saturday November 7th.

Volunteers are required for a Litter Pick, meet at the rear of the Community Centre at 10am to tidy up the area around St. Day. Please come along and help and enjoy a cup of tea, a biscuit and a chat afterwards.

Defibrillators – Yes!! More than one!

Hopefully you are aware that St Day Parish Council has been following up a Truro Lions Club initiative to provide as many Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) as possible in Truro and nearby villages. After forging a partnership with the Ronnie Richards Memorial Charity, based in Penzance, the area was extended and this is when we became involved in St Day in February of this year. Since then a total of £1,900 has been raised in 8 short months and we are very grateful to the following bodies and individuals who have donated so generously to the fund: Truro Lions Club Camborne/Redruth Lions Club St Day AFC/Enterprise Centre The Enterprise Indoor Bowls Club Cornwall Councillor’s Community Chest Fund St Day Line Dancers W J Mills Grant Fund And one generous but anonymous private donor It never ceases to amaze us how generous people in St Day can be when they recognise a worthy cause and there is even better news – the enterprising members of St Day AFC, as well as making a donation to our fund, also set about raising funding themselves and secured a grant from the British Heart Foundation which has enabled them to buy another defibrillator!

This has meant that, with the £1,900 we already have, we had sufficient funds to buy a defibrillator and heated cabinet plus another heated cabinet for the defibrillator which St Day AFC has bought – two defibrillators for St Day!!

These defibrillators will shortly be installed (they may even be in place by the time you read this), one on the out-

side wall of the Enterprise Centre at the Vogue Playing Field near to the main door and the other on the outside wall of St Day Inn, again near to the main door. More thanks – Michael Cox, the landlord at the St Day Inn, has very kindly offered to install both of the machines free of charge, meaning that we can do even more with the funds we have raised.

As the PADs are on the outside walls of buildings they can both be accessed 24 hours per day. If you are with someone who suffers a stroke or heart attack the first thing you should do is to call 999. The operator will tell you where the nearest PAD is for you to use while the ambulance is on its way.

The operator will also give you the access code to tap on the pad on the front of the machine to gain access to the PAD and, once you turn on the PAD, it gives you clear, spoken instructions on how to use it. Please don’t hesitate to use the machines, they are there for public use in emergencies and the PAD will always assess whether the patient needs treatment first – it will not work if the patient does not need treatment so you cannot harm the patient. Obviously we hope you will never have to use it but, if you do, at least we are prepared in St Day and it is recognised that these machines can save lives by giving emergency treatment before the emergency services arrive.

One last request – we would like to pay for at least 4 people (more would be even better) to take a short training course (just a couple of hours) on how to use the PAD so that assistance can be available if someone requires it. If you are willing to help out in this and attend the course, especially if you have medical or first aid training, although this is not essential, please contact St Day Parish Council on stdaypc@gmail.com or 01209 821829

Lonely Pawz

has been very busy lately.

We have rehomed several of our older cats to elderly folk who are lonely themselves. A pet goes a long way to keeping someone company ...a little voice asking for food/attention/a walk etc. means ...get up and do something!!!!!!

Our fundraising meeting here at Headquarters have been well attended and lots of new ideas for bringing in much needed funds were the topics of conversation. Lonely Pawz helps lost cats, dogs and other animals throughout Redruth and beyond. With the help of a small team of local volunteers we provide essential medical attention, try to find homes for them and look after them until we do.

Some of you reading this today, will know me well, but I am very conscious that I haven’t yet been around to all the churches in the Eight Saints Cluster, so I will be a stranger to a lot of you!

So let me introduce myself! My name is Steve Fletcher and I was ordained to the priesthood at Truro Cathedral in July and licensed to the cluster as a non-stipendiary assistant curate.

I am a Cornishman, born and raised in Penryn, where many members of my family still live.

I’ve felt a sense of calling from God to the priesthood, since I was five years old, when I went to St. Gluvias Church on my first day of school. That sense of God’s presence in my life remained with me throughout my childhood, even though no other members of my family were church-goers, and has stayed with me through all the ups and downs of life, to the present day.

Three years ago I moved to St. Day, where I live with my seven-year-old

Jackapoo dog, Bailey, who I’ve fostered through the Cinnamon Trust.

My main job, at the present time, is as a registered carer for three elderly and ill members of my family who live close by, helping them with a variety of problems such as their gardens, shopping, trips to clinics and hospitals, medicines and health and nursing issues.

Prior to that I was living in St Just in Penwith, where I was deputy chief reporter of The Cornishman newspaper. I originally did my training as a journalist on the West Briton at Truro and later became Chief Reporter of The Falmouth Packet, helping to train five young journalists.

After a year travelling around Europe in a VW camper, I returned to Cornwall and was put forward by Penwerris Parish Church in Falmouth as an ordinand, going first to Liverpool for two years as a parish assistant at a church on a large city housing estate and then doing my theological training at Cuddesdon, Oxford.

I was ordained Deacon at Truro Cathedral in 1992 and served for a short time at Newquay Parish Church, before returning to work full time in journalism and to my home in St. Just.

Following my move to St Day in order to be closer to the family members I care for, I started going along to the village’s Holy Trinity Church, where I was warmly welcomed and gently encouraged to return to Ministry within the cluster.

I was re-licensed as Deacon by Bishop Tim at Easter and ordained as a non-stipendiary Priest at Petertide. I am now on the cluster’s rota for celebrating Mass each week and am learning how to take Occasional Services. I am also attending post

(Continued from page 34) ordination seminars and meetings, organised by the Diocese, but am having to carefully organise my time as my caring duties to my family take priority.

It was on my pre-ordination retreat that I learnt something special about our Lord and about myself - and that is that no matter what path you take in life, He never lets go of you.

During the retreat, Bishop Tim read from one of the Gospel’s which tells the story of Jesus appearing to his disciples after his crucifixion. Jesus makes a small fire on a beach beside the Sea of Galilee and starts to cook some fish.

The disciples were fishing and saw him from their boat, jumping into the sea and rushing to him.

I’ve read this story many times, but it was only on my retreat that I understood for the first time that after Jesus’ crucifixion, the disciples went back to their former work as fishermen . I’d always assumed they immediately became missionaries, spreading the Good News they had learned from Jesus. But in fact, he had to call them back to the path he had set out for them.

This story has special significance for me, as after my ordination as Deacon in 1992, I went back to my former work as a journalist, and now all these years later, have been called back to ministry within the Church. Like I said earlier, He never lets go of you.

I hope, over the coming weeks and months, to meet more of you as I travel around the parishes and villages within the cluster. And please do not hesitate to invite me (and my little dog) to your homes for a cup of tea and a chat if you feel like it - neither Bailey or I bite..much!

Two and a half years of work have paid off and St Day is to have a whole new play area at the Wheal Jewel Playing Field. The play equipment that is there was well past its sell by date years ago and the Action St Day Group with the help of Scott James, Bryony Nicholls and Mervyn Smallwood of Kerrier District Council Regeneration team have put together £65,474 of funding granted by the Liveability Community Pot, Cornwall County Playing fields Association, Cory Environmental Trust, St Day Parish Council, the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest, Devon & Cornwall Housing, Living Spaces, the Local Network Fund, the Neighbourhood Community Chest Grant Fund, Lt. Comdr. J Mills, the St Day Jubilee Committee and the Action St Day Group. Quite a list but it’s quite a sum of money and it shows that the support is wide based.

The project started with the selection of potential contractors and Rolf Necked of Kerrier DC Engineering Service provided a select list and has kept in touch with the project right through and, since the completed play area is to be maintained by KDC, he will always be involved.

Five contractors were asked to submit a scheme and their designs were exhibited at St Day & Carharrack School to be commented on by the pupils and their parents. As well as being shown at the school a public display was viewed at the Action St Day Group Annual General Meeting and from the comment forms completed one contractor came out on top.

The prices submitted were keen and "best value", other than just price, determined the final choice. The chosen suppliers are Company, who also supplied the play equipment at Tucking Mill. Up until recently Company were part of the Lego Group so we are dealing with people who understand children very well, and adults who like playing, sorry, designing with Lego.

The final design is made up of eleven separate pieces that set out to appeal to young people from two or three up to fifteen or sixteen.

There are two sets of swings, two twizzley sticks, these are real fun, two very modern roundabouts (one you can sit in and the other you can use in all sorts of ways), a rocking ‘wasp’, a spinning bowl, a ‘standup’ seesaw, a play house, come slide , come climbing frame and a monster climbing frame the likes of which you will have never seen before.

It is 18 feet (5.5 metres) across and about 10 feet (3 metres) tall and is certainly the most exciting piece of kit you will have seen in a long time. The whole set up is to provide interesting and challenging and exciting "FUN" and it will belong to the young people of St Day and, please can I have a go sometimes.
