Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family

This is my first Calling article following my return from the USA. The program in the USA was a very worthwhile experience however, it is also good to be home. I will provide further information pertaining to my trip over the coming weeks. I would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people who assumed additional responsibilities in order to cover my absence. Firstly, to David Gardiner for assuming the Acting Principal role. David’s professional yet caring approach is reassuring for me and I thank him for taking on the additional responsibilities in my absence. I also thank the CLT, Jan Thompson, Peter Sandaver and the large number of staff who assisted during my absence. My thanks also to Tony Gadsby for the under 15 rugby coaching in my absence.

It is very reassuring to know that in my absence there is such a range of generous and talented people who are willing to accept the additional responsibilities to accommodate my absence and I thank all these people very much. I also wish to acknowledge my wife and daughters for their ability to accommodate my absence. Without this I would have been unable to go.

The end of Term 2 is upon us now with the students finishing tomorrow with a liturgy at 12.45 pm and dismissal at 1.30 pm. Staff return to school next week and complete the reports and participate in a range of PD work. Reports will be posted on 25 June.

Despite the holidays coming up there are a range of activities occurring over the holidays. The most notable is the Confraternity Rugby League tournament which St Patrick’s College is hosting at Curlew Park. This is a significant event and many people have been involved in the planning for many months. The success of the carnival will be very much dependent upon our volunteers.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. If you can assist in any way please contact the College ASAP or view the College website for further information. Any amount of assistance would be greatly appreciated. Other activities over the holidays include the cross country camp and the Open and Under 15 basketball trip to Sydney. I wish all staff, students and parents involved in these activities the very best over the holidays.

Term 3 begins with a number of activities. I draw your attention to the Parent Education Evening on Wednesday 18 July, featuring Celia Lashlie. Celia is a world renowned speaker on boys and I would strongly encourage parents to come along and listen to what Celia has to say. The night is not just limited to St Patrick’s College families. Celia speaks all over the world so if you have friends that would like to come along they are very welcome. I would ask that if you are coming to the night you make a booking. There is a small charge to attend, but I believe that this is minimal compared to the quality and reputation of the speaker. Check the College website for booking details.

Brother Fergus Gagen, past Principal of St Patrick’s College, has just been in hospital and would appreciate our prayers for a full recovery. A reminder to Year 10 students and parents that permission slips and options choice for the Year 10 Retreat program in the Week 1 next term aredue now. We hope that parents have discussed the various options with their sons. Below is the list of options. Please make sure that permission slips are returned to Mrs Righetti at the Students office before Friday. Students that do not return options slips will be placed randomly in any program.

“SLUM SURVIVOR” RETREAT: This is an overnight Retreat experience which is designed to give the boys a glimpse into what it is like to live in poverty for 36 hours. The program is a very physically challenging one with many activities aimed at opening the eyes of the boys to some of the injustices that exist inside and outside of Australia.

“A REFUGEE’S LIFE” RETREAT: Students will learn a little about the life of an asylum seeker and refugee through various activities including practical demonstrations, guest speakers and simulated games. Normal school hours will apply.

We are still collecting blankets and sleeping bags for the homeless. If you can help out please drop items off at the Ministry Office. We wish all students and parents a safe and restful holiday.

Redevelopment Works Notification This year, St Patrick’s celebrated its 60th anniversary and during this time, we have continued to improve facilities to provide positive teaching and learning environments for our students.

With this in mind, I would like to update you on some minor redevelopment works we will be undertaking during the June/July school holidays. As part of the works, buildings at 42 and 46 Pier Avenue will be removed so we can redevelop the site to increase the recreational space available for our students to provide shade, landscaping and green space, as well as additional bike racks.

St Patrick’s College is committed to working with our neighbours and our community as we continue to build for the future of our school. We have owned these buildings for a number of years and their removal is in-line with our longterm master planning goals, and will be undertaken in compliance with relevant legislation. We are confident that the architect-designed landscaping incorporated along the fence line will also boost the visual amenity of Pier Avenue.

We have also been working with the Shorncliffe Newsagency to ensure they are not unduly inconvenienced by the redevelopment works. .

Through the courtesy of the RSL in Sandgate, I was able to invite Mr Barry Bean to come to St Patrick’s College, to speak to the Year 10 SOSE Class on Wednesday, 30 May 2012.

Mr Bean had served in the 161 Reconnaissance Unit in the Australian Army from 1965- 1966. He worked with Huey Choppers (helicopters) to transport troops, medical supplies and war equipment. His talk was most informative and enlightening.

He told us that the international unpopularity of the Vietnam War was caused by the mass media as it was the first ever “TV War.” Divided opinions about the war in Vietnam prevailed in the US and the West as well as in Australia.

Mr Bean’s unit was based in Nui Dat, with other Australian troops. The enemy, the Vietcong, was code-named “Charlie” and was difficult to recognise as they often used children as a front. The fighting occurred in difficult terrain in the environment of swamps, dry dust bowls and lush equatorial jungles.

This made conventional war tactics and equipment difficult to apply.

Mr Bean’s relaxed story-telling style and informative PowerPoint slides (with some relevant first–hand photos included) gave his audience a much deeper insight into the day-to-day routine of a soldier while on active military service at the war front. He described realistically the homesickness felt by the troops. He also discussed the tropical discomforts of rashes and mosquitoes, as well as the high risk of malaria, frequent stomach illnesses, continual sweating in the heat and the incessant tropical rainstorms that fell frequently. Packages from home filled with Vegemite and Billy Tea kept the troops’ morale up while letters from home were most important.

Mr Bean’s frank admission of fear of death in the face of combat and the deep sadness felt at the loss of mates who were casualties of the war (felt on both sides) were very touching and hit home the point that there are no winners in a war.

AP Student Formation I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of the St Patrick’s community all the best for the upcoming Winter break and hope that it is both restful and energizing.

Congratulations to all the boys for a great semester. It certainly has been a very full but positive semester. Enjoy the break – it is well deserved.

Over the winter break you will receive your son’s Semester 1 Report. Please take time to discuss your son’s Semester One report with him and help him set clear goals for the second semester. It is important to acknowledge the good work your son is doing but also take note of the teacher’s comments about areas to work on. Students who are performing well in their classes generally are also showing positive behaviour.

Please also maintain strong communication with the staff, either by writing notes in the Student Diary, email or via the phone.

Term 3.

HAIR: It is important that all students and parents review “The Hair and Grooming Policy” that is located on page 27 and 28 of the Student Diary. The underlying principle “St Patrick’s College requires students in order to maintain a high standard of dress and grooming so as to present an appropriate image of the College to the broader community and to each other, it is an expectation that hair be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times”. I ask that all boys make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of Term 3. Students will be sent home on the first day of Term 3 if they do not meet these College Guidelines.

TERM 3 UNIFORM: Term 3 commences on Monday, 9 July, for all students. All students are to wear the school winter uniform during Term Three. Please ensure your son has his full uniform for the first day of Term 3. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 must wear the College Blazer to and from school each day, as well as during the day if they wish. It is a requirement that all boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 wear long trousers every day. All students in Years 5 to 11 must use a College Bag to and from school every day. Tour fleece’s are not to be worn at school.

Both Adam and Simon have been great supporters of St Patrick’s College since they graduated and often when they are able to (between training and competition demands) both have been seen around the College assisting us and mentoring where possible.

Mr Luke Donatini Confraternity at Curlew We Need You! Well we have only a few weeks left before the annual Confraternity Shield Rugby League Carnival comes to Curlew Park.

This great event boasts some 800 (40 teams) schoolboy players displaying their best and exciting rugby league talent and skills, and it is all on show at Curlew Park. The Confraternity Shield Carnival can lay claims to some of the best NRL players within Australia, some of whom have also played Origin Football as well as represented Australia.

St Patrick’s College is not only honoured to host this event but we are also inspired to make the 2012 Confraternity Shield Carnival the best of all time. This goal cannot be achieved without YOUR SUPPORT. We are still in need of volunteers from our College community to offer up some time to assist us during the week of Confraternity.

So, please put up your hand to volunteer and in doing so be part of, and witness, some of the best senior schoolboy rugby league within Australia all on show at Curlew Park. Guaranteed, you will be watching some of our future NRL stars playing league in Shorncliffe at Curlew Park’s Confraternity Carnival.

CROSS COUNTRY As reigning AIC cross country premiers it is important that SPC ‘X-Men’ remain committed to training over the holidays.

Indeed it is believed that our attendance here has made the difference in our past success.

If training on your own make sure you do a long run as well on Sunday. This should ensure that you are prepared for the AIC championship meet on July 28.

However, the following structure is also offered by coaches for those who prefer to train with like-minded souls. As always, we meet on the back oval.

If in year 4, your son was in the final of the 100m he is needed for the St Patrick’s CIC Athletics Team.

Note: Private transport to Boondall is not required, most boys catch the first available train from Shorncliffe to North Boondall station and it is only a short walk to the sports hall.

SPC Basketball Uniform TRAINING: All boys are required to wear their college P.E. uniform or Basketball uniform, at no stage are boys allowed to wear other club singlet’s, NBA singlet’s, rugby jersey’s etc. If boys are found wearing the incorrect uniform they will be asked to sit out of training which may affect selection chances. If boys are continually found wearing the wrong uniform they may lose the opportunity to represent the college in basketball, I ask for all parents support with this matter.

GAMES: Boys are permitted to wear the college P.E. uniform during the initial trials but all boys are required to have a college basketball singlet by round one. Boys are permitted to wear college P.E. shorts during games so long as all pockets have zips. SPC basketball shorts are available for purchase from the uniform shop if desired.

Parents, Due to a number of events over the holidays (Confraternity Rugby League and EREA Basketball Tour) the gym will be open during the FIRST WEEK ONLY from 7:30am-10:30am on MONDAY, WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY. Numbers in the gym have significantly dropped over the Rugby and Football season along with the cold weather. I ask that all boys who take their commitment to Basketball, Cross Country and Athletics seriously to begin to attend gym sessions on a regular basis. Also, for those boys who wish to improve their Swimming/Volleyball or Rugby/Football; it is not too early to begin preparation for next year.

Boys do not have to commit large amounts of their time initially, begin by attending 1-2 lunch time/morning sessions a week and build up. Ensure that boys see me for a structured, sport specific program. I sincerely hope all boys enjoy the time off away from sports but begin to prepare themselves to commit early into Term 3.

I have attached a copy of the Gym Hours for Term 3, as always if you have any questions or comments regarding the SPC GYM Program don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Thursday 7June 2012 Hi Parents and Players Our commitment to run a clinic for five days in our third week of June/July holidays, Monday 2 July – Friday 6 July has been cancelled due to the paucity of numbers and the fact that coaches need time to change arrangements and courts to be cancelled. I do understand the current financial situation in which most families find themselves but urge all players to continue with their signed-on sport through Term 3 and 4.

May we all have an enjoyable, safe and successful tennis season.

incere thanks to all parents and friends who assisted in the Curlew Park Canteen and BBQ area on our ‘Back to Shorncliffe Day’ Saturday 19 May vs. St Edmund’s, Ipswich. We grossed $10 000 plus which is our highest total for one day. This was especially due to having our new cold room in full operation.

Our Group has contributed $3 000 towards a new ‘tennis ball machine’ requested by Director of Sport, Luke Donatini, and our professional tennis coach, Brad Harbottle. We have also contributed $900 towards our sportsmen who have been selected for Queensland School Sport Representation.

We are assisting the forthcoming Confraternity Shield Carnival, 25 - 29 June. Any parental assistance, especially those associated with the Carnival, will be greatly appreciated. If available, even for a few hours, please contact David Row on mobile phone 0409 531457 or phone 3869 4585.

Our prayerful support is offered for our Chairman, Terry McMahon who is to undergo an operation and will be away for approximately two months.

BIS Competition Our final round of the BIS competition took place on Tuesday night hosting Padua College.

DEBATING The year 7 debaters did exceptionally well and a special mention must go to Sam Essex and Nicholas Harrington. Both debated well after having some initial complications and needing to switch places in the debate. Congratulations to Sam Essex and Joe Grew for receiving speakers of the night in debating.

Well done to all team members for a great BIS debating competition in Term 2.

2012 BIS debating team members are, Ethan Harvey, Max Marson, Sean Lahey, Nicholas Harrington, Joe Grew and Sam Essex.

PUBLIC SPEAKING Our final round of public speaking yielded some great speeches. The boys are getting better with more experience. Great job gentlemen!

CHESS We had a great turn out of boys to play chess in the BIS competition on Tuesday night. All boys played well together and enjoyed themselves. Even though chess can be a serious game there were many smiles and laughs throughout the night.

ART CLUB WRAP UP Another exciting year for both Junior and Senior Art Club!

Interest and participation in the visual arts continues to grow and I am so pleased to see many boys coming back and lots of new faces too.

The theme for 2012 has been ‘back to basics – drawing fundamentals’. As an Art teacher of all levels I have seen many students form bad drawing habits that inhibit them from challenging themselves and producing the drawings that they really want to. My goal has been to break these habits by introducing some basic ‘rules’. These have included: Drawing lightly, sketching to ‘find’ the line, drawing basic shapes, how to approach a drawing and using basic frameworks to create a figure or object.

Students often struggle to start a drawing and this is when art can become a negative experience for them. In Art Club we have learnt to approach a drawing in a very systematic way. This involves learning to ‘see like an artist’. Artists don’t see objects, they see lines. The students have learnt to observe quality of lines, length, angles and how they relate to other lines around them.

A common subject matter students wish to draw is people.

However, they often become frustrated when their poses look static and lifeless. In Junior Art Club we officially ‘killed’ the stick man and I introduced the class to ‘skeleton man’ – an anatomically superior basic figure to draw initial poses with. Students learnt about human proportions and how to draw people in action poses to create interesting and dynamic compositions. A fun activity was our life drawing sessions (fully-clothed and fully-fun!) Students took turns holding action and reclining poses for the class to sketch.

This proved to be a very popular activity as Art Club has uncovered some spectacular show ponies!

In Term 2 in Junior Art Club we focused on painting skills.

Paint is a wonderful, versatile medium but can also prove to be quite daunting and difficult to manipulate. Students are often put off by the messiness of the medium and the struggle to control it. To learn to relax with the medium, students had to first accept the idea that paint is different to pencil and cannot be manipulated the same way. This might sound obvious, but it is a real mindset that needs to be changed.

Students learnt different painting techniques with the focus on planning and patience.

For Term 2 in Senior Art Club I encouraged the students to devise their own projects. Senior students often need to take the time away from regular art class to explore and develop their own signature style. Students worked with oil pastels, paint and collage just to name a few mediums.

It’s been really heartwarming to see the level of interest and care the students have put in their work this year. They continue to amaze me with their creativity and positive attitude to try something new. Art Club boys are truly a remarkable group of go-getters, and I am very proud of their efforts, participation and beautiful work.
