No. 37

27 November 2014

Dear Members of the St. Patrick’s College Community, It is hard to believe that this is the last edition of the Calling for 2014. It is also the final time that I will write my Calling article. The realization is somewhat sobering. It is hard to believe how quickly the last 11 years have gone. Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity on a number of occasions to reflect on my time at St. Patrick’s College and to thank people for the support they have offered to me over the years. I have been humbled by the way people have acknowledged me and thanked me. I wish to thank the St. Patrick’s Community, past and present, for their friendship and support over the years. St. Patricks’ College is an outstanding College with many great assets. However, without a doubt, its greatest asset is the people. I have been privileged to meet staff and students who started Day 1 in 1952 through to newest enrolments and all have displayed that great ‘Paddies ‘ spirit and I have been honoured to be part of this great community. As we journey to the end of the year we say farewell to a number of staff. The staff leaving at the end of the year include: Mr Steve Graham (retiring after 39 years at St. Patrick’s College), Mr Ray Celegato, Mr Lee Dowlng, Mr Charles Brauer, Mr Tim Walker, Mr Luke Donatini, Mr Richard Gradwell, Mrs Sharie Faloon, Mrs Liz Devine, Mr Alan Clark, Ms Rebecca Hewitt and Mrs Jane Collins. I thank these staff for their contributions over the years and wish them all the best with their future journey. On Wednesday I sent an email to all families to inform them of the upcoming property acquisition St. Patrick’s College is about to undertake. Earlier this year the College was approached by representatives of the current owners of the Seaview Hotel identifying the freehold land, buildings and business was for sale. The College was not interested in purchasing the hotel as a going concern and that remains the College's position. Subsequently the College was advised that the hotel was being sold and the owner was going to sell the freehold title. The current owner of the Seaview Hotel has subsequently made a decision to close the Seaview Hotel, this will occur at the end of this month. Edmund Rice Education Australia, the owner and operator of St. Patrick’s College, has since entered a contract to purchase the land and buildings and will take vacant possession of the site at the end of 2014. The College will make use of the existing car parking areas that form part of the site. This impending purchase of the property is an exciting opportunity for the future of St. Patrick’s College. There has been misinformation regarding the Seaview Hotel and St. Patrick’s College in recent times. I can confirm that St. Patrick’s College is not purchasing an operating hotel, that the current owner of the Seaview Hotel is closing the hotel in November, and that St. Patrick’s College has entered negotiations to purchase the freehold property. I trust that these comments give some clarification about this issue. As we journey to the end of the year I take this opportunity to wish all families a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. I hope that families have a restful break and recharge for the opportunities that 2015 will hold. Finally this week, and for the last time I thank everyone for their support over the last 11 years. It has been an honour to journey with you and its been a privilege to be part of this great community. Thank you and God Bless, and remember to always ‘Fight the Good Fight’

College Dean Student Formation With the end of year upon us I would like to sincerely thank all the parents for your wonderful support during the year. The role of parents within the College community and with the support of their son is vital to the success of a school. St. Patrick’s has had a very successful year and one in which growth has continued to occur. This has been enhanced by the positive role played by our parents. The end of the school year brings the holidays upon us and in many cases the question of what to do to keep our sons engaged. Hopefully, the holidays will be a time for families to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. I hope everyone enjoys a safe and joyous Christmas.

START OF SCHOOL YEAR 2015 All Years 5, 7, 8, and 12s and any new student will commence school on Tuesday, 27 January. All other students will attend from Wednesday, 29 January. It is important that for the commencement of the new school year, every student must have his correct College uniform and adhere to the College Hair and Grooming Policy. Issues that must be addressed include correct hair and grooming; correct black leather belt and shiny, black formal school shoes. All students in Years 5 to 12 will be required to have a school back pack or shoulder bag to and from school. The only bags students may carry around during school hours are small draw string bags and their College T.A.N.C laptop bags. It is important that all students meet these requirements for the start of the new school year.

Mr Frank Torrisi I would like to thank and congratulate Mrs Sandra Fowlie and the House Deans for the great support they have provided to me this year, as well as the enormous contribution they have made to the St. Patrick’s community throughout 2015. In particular on behalf of the St. Patrick’s College community a special and heartfelt thank you to Mr Charles Brauer, Mr Tim Walker and Mr Richard Gradwell for the contribution as House Deans in providing support and guidance for the young men at this College over the years. Their commitment, loyalty and leadership of their respected Houses has grounded a positive spirit, recognized by all. After 11 years of dedicated servant leadership, 2014 sees us farewell Dr Michael Carroll who will leave St. Patrick’s College to become the Principal of St. Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace. During his time as the longest serving Principal at St. Patrick’s, Michael demonstrated a genuine commitment to the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, earnestly advocating for proactive support of those at the margins. His contribution to the College over more than a decade has been remarkable. Michael’s resolute faith ensured that the St. Patrick’s College family survived its most challenging period. He has actively sought to develop strong relationships across the community in pursuit of improving the educational journey of the thousands of young men who have passed through the College’s gates during his time. Current students, old boys, parents and staff have all been profoundly influenced by his loyalty, leadership and presence. Under his care and guidance we have prospered. I wish Michael all the very best with his new journey. I hope that he always continues to Certa Bo num Certamen – Fight the Good Fight.

DISCIPLES OF LOVE “I’d like you to have a read of my homily, to see if you think it’s ok,” said Fr. Liam as we sat down to prepare for last week’s Graduation Mass. This frightened the socks off me! As I cautiously accepted Fr. Liam’s offer to read over his homily I quickly discovered that I wasn’t receiving a burden, rather, I was receiving an extraordinary gift. Fr. Liam’s homily at our recent Graduation Mass focused on the idea of our graduating Seniors being disciples of love. In doing so, Fr. Liam has reinforced with our community the aim of education at St. Patrick’s College – forming disciples of love. We are familiar with this. We forever aspire to form young men that “make a differenc e”, that are “men of ac tion”, that “answer the Call”, that are “up-standers”. Through his homily’s theme, Fr. Liam has brought all of these aspirations together and focused our mission of educating young men in the Edmund Rice tradition.

This message can be applied beyond our classrooms and playgrounds. As Christians and as people willing to discover the potential of our humanity, we are all tasked with being disciples of love; as parents, as friends, as first-time strangers, as brothers, as sisters, as sons and as daughters.

As we celebrate the coming of Christmas this weekend with the 1st Sunday of Advent, let us be mindful of the gift that Fr. Liam has given us. We are called to be Disc iples o f Lo ve. I wish you and your family a restful and safe holiday and a very happy Christmas.

Head of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Last week I had the pleasure to visit the remote Northern Territory community of Numbulwar in far eastern Arnhem Land, to visit a new student to the Homestay Program who will be beginning next year. The drive from Darwin enabled an opportunity to visit other communities along the way such as Ngukurr, on the remote Roper River, and to really experience the remoteness of the region. The College is very lucky to have built such solid relationships with the Numbulwar community and Numbulwar School. In speaking to a number of people - teachers and principals, community members, family - it became quite clear that remote communities such as Numbulwar and Ngukurr, are quite receptive to the idea of their young people making the journey to larger cities to experience different world views. What was also made clear by the community was the need for us to maintain our relationships, and to enable their children to successfully transition between the two worlds. It is not an easy task for these young people to undertake, but their families want them to succeed, knowing this can only be done in partnership with each other.

Mr Luke Royes I have had the opportunity to visit a number of communities more than once now. Speaking with community and listening to their wishes is essential to the development of the College Homestay Program. Even when thousands of kilometres away, families feel part of the St. Patrick’s Community. This term we have been highlighting this program through a number of Calling articles as well as the College Facebook page. Once again I repeat the invitation to all to become involved in the program. If you feel you are able to assist in this opportunity for new students to the College or would like more information please feel free to call me at any time 0487319046 or email lroyes@stpatricks.qld.edu.au

SPORTS SUPPORT GROUP Dear St. Patrick’s College Community Thank you to all the good people that I have had the opportunity to work with over the years as part of the SSG. We have had a lot of laughs and raised some good money for something we all hold close to our hearts, our sons and St. Patricks. I will always look back fondly on what we have collectively achieved as a group and the canteen/BBQ facilities we have established for the group moving forward. While the focus is about supporting our young men and the school, if we can have a laugh along the way we know we will always succeed. Please make sure the chips are well cooked next year as it took me many years of hard work to go from onions to senior chip cooker. All the best, see you all for a burger next year.
