Academic medical centers often have three missions — clinical, research, and education — that must seamlessly work together without one taking precedent over the others. The main campuses often present a wide vintage of buildings and infrastructure that can challenge standard design efforts, and growing outpatient networks must be included in the overall planning effort. We are seeing many academic medical centers engaging in updating or replacing their existing facilities, making sure they reflect today’s standards for patient care, family involvement, multidisciplinary care teams, and new teaching methods. We are familiar with efforts to convert shared rooms into private patient rooms with accommodations for family members; conference rooms with technology and space for clinicians, residents, and students to discuss cases; and decentralized nurse stations to allow nurses to more efficiently respond to patient needs. With over 50 years of experience in the healthcare industry, we understand the intrinsic needs, political dynamics, and functional requirements of academic medical centers. We understand the importance of flexibility throughout planning and design in order to balance the clinical, research, and education missions of academic medical centers.
