Atrium Union West Hospital
Stallings, NC

Atrium Union West Hospital + Medical Office Building

The new Atrium Health campus in Stallings, NC includes a 150,000 SF hospital and 65,000 SF medical office building. The hospital offers emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care to better support the needs of the community and ensures residents continue to have local access to world-class patient care. The hospital features 36 licensed acute-care beds; eight labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) rooms; and four intensive care unit (ICU) beds. The emergency department is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week, with an available helipad. There are three operating rooms, plus one gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy suite and one cesarean delivery (C-section) operating room. Imaging, laboratory, and pharmacy services are also available onsite.

Atrium, who had not designed and built a greenfield hospital in over 25 years, engaged SSR to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design services for both the hospital and MOB. The hospital runs on traditional MEP systems. A percentage of the patient rooms were designed to be acuity adaptable to convert from Med Surg to ICU in the future.

2023 AIA Charlotte Top Design Award

Atrium Kenilworth Medical Plaza, MOB I + II

Atrium Health Kenilworth Medical Plaza I and II is a $230 million investment into improved care. The more than 400,000 SF plaza integrates a range of top-rated specialty services across disciplines into one location. Patients will have access to outpatient care across the medical spectrum, including teams from Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute, Atrium Health Pharmacy, Atrium Health Perspective Health & Wellness, gastroenterology, infectious disease, palliative care, pulmonology, and urology.

Kenilworth Medical Plaza I is the new flagship location for Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, bringing many of its outpatient services under one roof. Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute – Kenilworth includes five floors of complex specialty care services.

A nine-story, 1,400-plus-space parking deck accompanies the building. The structure and its neighboring medical office building are connected by a four-level pedestrian bridge.

SSR was selected to perform technology design and consulting services.

Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine

The Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine project is a 608,000 SF expansion that replaced and relocated services of Mission St. Joe Hospital from across Biltmore Avenue onto the main Mission campus in Asheville, NC. The 11-floor tower includes intensive diagnostic and treatment modalities (ED, interventional surgery, cath, and ICU) in addition to multiple nursing unit floors.

The project involved complicated phasing and interconnection with existing utilities that required the combined effort of both designer and builder. SSR and the general contractor engaged the major trade subcontractors in an extensive design-assist program to enable the subs to begin their coordination and fabrication processes early (to meet an aggressive project schedule) and to identify and resolve coordination issues before they hit the field. The project is completed, and the integrated delivery process has been a model for other owners in the region. SSR provided engineering design services including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology.

Spartanburg Regional Union Medical Center

The Spartanburg Regional Health System’s new Union Medical Center officially opened to hospital patients in February of 2025. This 99,600 SF facility centralizes healthcare services under one roof, creating a sustainable model to address rural health needs driving critical access for the future of the community. The $55-million center features the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health, emergency care, Gibbs Cancer Center infusion services, imaging services, inpatient care, lab, primary and pediatric care, and an inpatient pharmacy. To enhance the patient experience, the campus includes a healing garden, a quarter-mile outdoor walking trail with exercise equipment, ample outdoor space, and other ammenities. SSR provided engineering design services including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology.

Prisma Health LexingtonGreenwise

SSR provided engineering design services for the conversion of a former grocery store into a premier Medical Office Building (MOB) for Prisma Health, located in the heart of Lexington. This new facility features over 30 exam rooms and is equipped to support multiple medical practices, including OB/GYN, Cardiology, and Physical Therapy (PT). It also includes full laboratories, office spaces, and conference rooms, ensuring that the space is well-prepared to serve Prisma Health and the surrounding community for years to come. SSR provided engineering design services including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.

Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health Project East

The project involves constructing a new seven-story patient care tower and renovating existing facilities, including the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), Trauma Intensive Care Unit (Trauma ICU), Surgery, Perioperative, Imaging, and Central Sterile departments. The SSR medical equipment planning team is providing essential services such as equipment planning, inventory management, procurement, and move management to ensure the new and renovated spaces are well-equipped and operationally efficient.

Piedmont Medical Center Fort Mill

Tenet Healthcare includes 480 ambulatory surgery centers and surgical hospitals, 61 hospitals, and approximately 110 additional outpatient centers and other sites of care across the country.

Mission Cancer Center

This Asheville, NC project was a 107,000 SF, free standing MOB, including a parking deck, two linear accelerators, cyber knife, and HDR vault. Also included was a CT simulation and PET CT. The building was designed for two future floors which will include comprehensive IT/technology systems planning with structured cabling, nurse call/code blue, televisions and television distribution systems, closed circuit and interactive video systems, security (card access, door monitoring, duress alarm), telephony/ VoIP infrastructure expansion, WAN infrastructure, GPS wireless clock distribution, and physicians dictation. The project consisted of four linear accelerators, a pediatric oncology unit, with infusion and support spaces.

GMH Behavioral Health ED Renovations

This project was the first of several behavioral health related projects for Prisma Health. The scope of this project was 7,000 SF renovation to the emergency department at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, SC to develop a 14-bed Behavioral Health unit. Because this was the first of several Behavioral Health projects within hospitals in this system, we worked at a system level to define the Behavioral Health standards within which to design and then standardized on fixture types across multiple projects. The Owner chose the Patient Safety Standards, Materials, and System Guidelines, recommended by the New York State Office of Mental Health as the design standard.

Prisma Health Centennial ASC

Prisma Health has initiated the construction of a new ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in Greenville, SC aimed at enhancing access to same-day surgical procedures for residents of the Upstate. The two-story, 45,351 SF facility features six fully equipped operating rooms on the upper level, with the lower level reserved for future development. Opened in fall 2024, the center offers efficient and high-quality care for urology, gynecology, and general surgery.

Duke University Medical Pavillion

Duke University Bed Tower Addition

The new Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) Bed Tower

Addition is an important project that will play an integral role in the campus-wide transformation to patient care. The 490,000 SF, 13-story bed tower includes 350 flexible patient rooms to accommodate varying degrees of acuity. In addition to patient rooms, the new facility will house a small pharmacy and building support services on the lower two floors, and a pediatric cath lab on the first floor.
